I realise the platform is going to narrow my options considerably but I keep hearing that things are getting better these days for mac gaming.

The obvious choice is Resident Evil Village and I'm this close to buying it but I'm a bit put off by first having to get it from the Mac App Store, then also the fact that it contains in-app-purchases but most irksome of all, the fact that it requires a network connection to start the game. None of these are dealbreakers, though that 3rd one is as close as it can get to a deal breaker because it's a real turn off. Why should I have a network connection? I'm sure I probably would but if I'm buying it, it's my game and I want to use it how I like.

The main criteria I'm looking for is:

  • M2 Silicone compatible
  • Looking for something with higher end graphics preferably. Haven't been able to do so for so long it'd be nice for a change.
  • preferably native (as opposed to rosetta)
  • has a single player mode
  • preferably is single player focussed
  • as little DRM bullshit as possible (such as completely unnecessary requirements for network connection to play my own game that I've bought)

I've previously enjoyed

  • Dirt Rally (2015)
  • Metro Redux
  • Civ IV and VI

I could list other games but they're pretty much all nearly 20 years old now so they're not so relevant. I particularly like racing but a highly conventional FPS would be fun too, I'm just not really very interested in multiplayer and prefer a storyline.

Follow his page for accessing all the playlists.

Each one is in the 3-4 hour range and they are:

Ambient Retrowave: you just landed at Gliese IV, an apparently abandoned planetoid which was a penal colony. As you explore the place, you feel that you’re being watched by someone… or something.;

Instrumental Retrowave: enemy fighters breached the outer rim, and all fighters from your brigade are launched to battle. Like a menacing swarm approaching, you see bogeys right and left that you have to engage;

Synthwave Selection: you are in the biggest space station in the quadrant, looking for your undercover contact. You have to find them first, searching in luxurious halls, rusty and half lit corridors, crowded gateways and suspect entertainment places. Bring your own oxygen though.

Eerie Sci Fi: your space freighter was boarded by a ship from unknown origin. You hear the hiss from hatches being opened. Will the newcomers see you as allies or foes… or food;

PS: the playlists are in the bottom of the artist page if you use Spotify mobile.

P.P.S.: if you want to go really dark, try this playlist

We are moving this community to https://lemmy.world/c/ps5

Subscribe here: !ps5@lemmy.world

Why?

Reason #1: Inciting Incident
  • As some of you may be aware, the country of Mali is apparently beginning to talk back .ml top level domains. This has already affected other communities and has the potential to affect lemmy.ml (See here for context). This is preemptive act to ensure that what we have build so far is not destroyed.
Reason #2: This community does not align well with lemmy.ml
  • Lemmy.ml is a FOSS focused instance. At the time of the creation of lemmy.ml/c/ps5, lemmy.world was not even on the map. I established this community very early before the reddit migration and wanted to establish it on what I believed at the time was the "flagship" instance for better discoverability. A lot has changed since then, and I believe this change will be in the best interest of this community moving forward. The Admins on lemmy.world have been wonderful and responsive, and I trust lemmy.world will be a great home for us.
  • Other people have personal issues with the lemmy.ml instance and its admins, so while this move will help others who dislike lemmy.ml confidently join our community, it is not the primary reason for migrating.

What will happen to lemmy.ml/c/ps5?

  • Great question. I would love to hear back from other community members on this subject. My initial plans are to pin this thread indefinitely at the top and cease posting news to this community. I will post weekly cross-posts in this community to the discussion threads on lemmy.world/c/ps5, which will have the comments locked, and a comment recommending others subscribe to the new community.
  • For other users posting here, I will still allow posts, but I will comment in each thread with a reminder to post to the new community. I do not intend to lock these posts at this point in time, however if substantial discussion is happening in these threads I may lock them down.

Please let me know your thoughts below!

-Cosmic

P.S. Special thanks to @Hurts@lemmy.world for transfering me the new community!

I was pleasantly surprised by the new Jagged Alliance 3 release last week. It really flew under the radar, but I'm glad I snagged it because it's been really great so far.

I did run out of cash on the first island, so I treated that as a trial run. Every situation feels fresh, and the RPG elements seem more fleshed out than the new XCOM games.

I'm really liking how open-ended it seems; it reminds me a little bit of the original 2 Fallout games. I'm hoping for a PVP dlc or mod in the future, because (perhaps an unpopular opinion) Deadly Games was my favorite entry in the series; I played against my brothers all the time when I was a kid.

I love my PS5 but I haaaate the way it looks so I'd like to be able to take the guts and fan out of it and pop it in to a simple, elegant, 3D printed case...do these exist?

Failing that I would be happy to build one out of wood if there were some kind of template for the ports etc...has anyone done this? Do you have a link to pics of your project?

There must be something that can be done to make the PS5 less offensive to look at, I've tried but even so, my attempts are not enough to make me hate it less, I've attached a pic of what mine looks like now (except I've rounded off the popped colar now, this is an older pic) hope it works.

I've seen the DIY Perks project and that's nice and all but it's a bit 'CEOs office' for my liking.

As for my PS5, I have an orange LED behind the PS logo and I attached EL wire along the sides of the front panel that lights up orange to match the paint job, these were wired to the USB power on the inside so I had to disable USB power in rest mode so that they turn off when not in use.

I'm looking up for communities or scenes whose purpose is making games that you play from bootup. Not necessarily boot sector games (stuff that has to fit in 512 bytes), but things that would behave much like cartridges in old consoles, where the hardware boots straight into the game.

Put another way, games that "are the OS", either for x86 or ARM. My search engine-fu didn't manage to find anything other than boot sector games and several Batocera guides.

With a relentless speed that harks back to Devil Daggers, Hellscreen's heart-thumping pace is a hallmark of its design. Developer Jamie Degen has masterfully crafted a world where death serves as an upgrade, leaving players to face a fiery onslaught of flaming skulls and eldritch horrors. The game's idiosyncratic aesthetic, a dramatic interplay of cyan and red, lends a surreal quality to the eerie maps and comic-book-style gunfire, recalling the disturbing artistry of H.R. Giger. With each inevitable death, players return stronger, ready to brave the uncanny labyrinth that unfurls beneath a blood-red sky.

The game’s first-person perspective is enhanced by an intriguing feature—a rear-view mirror. This novel addition, uncommon in first-person games, elevates the need for environmental awareness. It’s not merely about charging ahead; players must constantly swivel between what lies ahead and the threats creeping up from behind.

Surprisingly, the mirror offers more than just improved situational awareness. Right-clicking allows players to fire backwards, with a small gun and reticle appearing in the mirror view. The game rewards players who master this feature, offering double damage when moving and firing forwards, and quadruple damage when progressing forwards and shooting backwards. Navigating this three-dimensional battlefield feels akin to grappling with a groundbreaking realm of movement. This unique mechanic adds a satisfying layer to the game, calling for well-timed, precision mirror shots.

Over several years of development, Hellscreen has evolved from its initial Kickstarter campaign into a standout shooter. The narrative immerses players into a universe of ancient gods, an afterlife machine, and creatures artificially crafted as part of the mechanism. As one of the machine’s errors, you are thrust into the Hellscreen dimension, caught in a cycle of death and resurrection. It's up to you to destroy this malfunctioning machine, restore the natural order, and perhaps then find everlasting rest.
