Can anyone explain what voodoo magic Bethesda used to make Starfield, a game that usually runs below 30fps on my pc, feel like it's running above that? I mean, not even Nintendo on their own console has achieved this feat.

Hi all My kid will get a gaming pc soon. I can't swallow the cost of a whole setup at the moment. I'm thinking of getting a good motherboard with a decent second hand graphics card (a colleague I trust can find me one). And over time upgrade where needed. For monitor I would be using my TV.

Is this a smart idea? We'd have a wireless mouse/keyboard and some table thing to game from the couch.

At the moment my kid is into Roblox and Minecraft, but I assume once his pc can run more; he'll play 'real' games. We are also looking to learn to program (scratch/python). Would that work on a TV?

The TV is an older model (10 years old).

Edit; Thanks everyone for the ideas and advice. We'll try the TV first. And will also look into a steamdeck. It's nice to get such positive feedback from everyone!

So, uh, Chinese Room. Think they're the walking sim guys. Vibe looks different to the first one, less gothic punk and more succulent goth mommy. Not sure how I feel about it. Guess I'll wait for vertical slices.

TL;DR: Which game you like better, Monster Train or Inscryption?

When I first bought Slay The Spire, I thought I was going to hate it. Never been much into deckbuilding games, roguelites even less. I ended up absolutely loving the game. Building unique fun decks, adapting to the RNG, planning a way to beat the heart. I loved every second of it. I spent 500 hours on the game so far. I beat A20 with every character, completed every achievement.

Recently I bought Wildfrost. At first I found it super hard, but devs seem to be very active and developed some QoL improvements that made the game amazing for me. Managing all the keywords and unit placement was hard but very rewarding. I loved the game and would totally recommend giving the new patch a go, it's much more forgiving. I spent 70 hours on the game so far, beat all difficulties and completed every achievement.

Looking to move on to the next deckbuilding roguelite game. Narrowed it down to Inscryption or Monster Train, both seem really nice.

If you own Monster Train would you recommend getting the DLC (it's at sale now) or just the base game and check the DLC later?

Thanks!

Square Enix has officially announced a PC version of Final Fantasy 16 is in development, in addition to two pieces of paid DLC.

More details will be shared on Square Enix’s plans for Final Fantasy 16 for PC before the end of the year, it said.

Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida shared the news during a PAX West panel on Saturday, along with news that a significant update has released for the PlayStation 5 version.

“It’s been just over two months since Final Fantasy XVI’s release and we’ve received an enormous amount of feedback from players around the world,” Yoshida said via a pre-recorded video.

“The development team and I have also been watching your videos and streams, paying special attention to what everyone thinks of Final Fantasy XVI. We put our all into creating this game, so it’s a real joy to see so many different reactions.

“And so as an expression of our sincerest gratitude, we are releasing a free update available for download today.”

The full patch notes for the new update can be found embedded below. Yoshida highlighted the fact that it’s added new controller layouts, a weapon skin feature allowing players to change the appearance of Clive’s weapon, and alternate outfits for Clive, Jill, Torgal, Ambrosia and Joshua.

“As I mentioned earlier, we’ve seen so many opinions and reactions from our community of Final Fantasy XVI players,” Yoshida continued. “But one thing that came through particularly strongly was how people wanted to see more of Valisthea’s story and spend more time with her inhabitants.

“To accommodate, the development team has started work on two instalments of paid DLC.

“Finally, while Final Fantasy XVI was released as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, we are aware that many of you have been asking for a PC version. So allow me to take this opportunity to officially announce that development on a PC version is currently underway.

“I hope to be able to give you more information on both the DLC and the PC version before the end of this year, so please stay tuned.”

Final Fantasy 16 was released for PS5 in June, and Square Enix claimed that it would remain exclusive to Sony’s console for at least the remainder of the calendar year.

Prior to the game’s release, Yoshida said he’d like to see a PC version of the game released “eventually”.

“First of all, it is true that Final Fantasy 16 is a six-month limited time exclusive on the PS5 platform,” he told the Japanese PlayStation Blog. “However, it is a completely different story that the PC version will be released in half a year. I will make it clear, but the PC version will not come out in half a year.

“This is because we spent a lot of time and money optimizing the PS5 platform to deliver the best gaming experience. Of course, I would like to release a PC version at some point so that everyone can play as many games as possible.

“However, even if we start optimizing the PC version after the PS5 version comes out, we won’t be able to optimize it in half a year, so it won’t come out in a short span of half a year. I would like to release it eventually, and I think I will, but I am not at the stage where I can say when.”

Hey folks, just wondering if any of you out there are playing BFBC2 via the Project Rome servers and are having issues logging in.

I was able to play on the day I installed the feature but ever since I haven't been able to log into Project Rome in-game to play online.

Anyone else having similar issues? I'm wondering if this is just a me thing...

Counter-Strike 2 will give players a rank for each individual map. Players will also receive a single rank based on the Premiere mode (pick-and-ban maps for each match).

For those that didn't catch the last Direct, Super Mario Wonder has announced that it will feature two different kinds of online multiplayer, both very different to local multiplayer - one where you can see "ghosts" of other players currently online on a given level, which can't interact with you directly but can give you specific aids (such as reviving you when you lose a life, setting a checkpoint for you to revive, or handing you an item); and another where you can make rooms with your friends... but still can't interact directly with them, only allowing for speedrun-styled races. Sure it's a letdown to not be able to properly interact with other players online in the same way that you can do offline, but the problem is that the alternative has already been attempted... and the results are catastrophic.

Remember Super Mario Maker 2? It included a mode where players could join an online room, whether with friends or strangers, to play courses among themselves. It's also infamous for the constant slowdowns that players experienced during the courses. Why was this happening, you may wonder? Well, because the players needed to synchronize their state between each other, and since the game was not designed with modern network tools in mind such as rollback (which would probably be too heavy for the Switch), the only way to ensure everyone was on the same lane was to wait for everyone to receive the input data from all other players. And in a game with up to four players at a time, things are absolutely going to get messy.

And that's why the current online implementation of Super Mario Wonder is a decent compromise. If players are ghosts that can't interfere directly in the state of other players, that means that no synchronization of data is required, and a ghost can lag behind real-time as much as the network forces it to without needing to pause the game of all other users of the lobby. Sure, it's a shame that Nintendo still doesn't use rollback in the year of our lord 2023, but let's face it, the Switch was not the best of class back on release date, and nowadays even a smartphone has more memory and processor speed. That means that implementing rollback netcode into the game would require major gameplay sacrifices (such as capping the frame rate and the amount of items on screen, for example) in order to fit the limited capabilities of the Switch. If the choice was between having limited interaction between players and running at half the speed in the worst case scenario, I think Nintendo chose right.
