One thing that I've always liked is the endless scrolling. IDK if there's a way to endlessly scroll through magazines but maybe that would make it more like reddit /r/all ... Because I would almost always go there and scroll for thousands of pages.

Even on sites that I've developed, I've gotten rid of the pagination. Unless it's something completely stupid, I just allow the user to scroll and feed in the results below the fold...

Here is what we know about it so far:

  • It will most likely be called Threads.
  • It is not known what domain it will use for usernames.
  • In mockup screenshots, a user replies to someone using an @mastodon.social handle, it's very likely that they will federate.
  • It will be side app of Instagram. It's not clear how much of the new network will be baked into the main app.
  • Your username and verification status will carry over, so early adopters won't have an advantage for their preferred username.
  • Your followers will not carry over but there will be an easy way to pick and follow people on your Instagram list.

Personal observations:

  • Many people that I talked to about it think that this will be Meta's attempt at an "EEE".
  • Some Mastodon instance admins that I chatted about it say that Meta will "likely attempt to pull their user data", and they "will defederate immediately".

I have created this KBin magazine in light of the recent Reddit API protests; the magazine is essentially a dedicated place in the off chance the Fediverse ever has to mobilize to defend ourselves. Feel free to subscribe if you want to, or don't if you don't. The only point of its existence is essentially to be a reserve force.

Hey everyone, super excited to be exploring the fediverse both here on kbin and elsewhere. Looking for a Mastodon client primarily for iOS, great to see the main app is open-source, but there seems to be quite a few options out there. Feel free to share non-iOS clients for others' benefit as well.

I prefer FOSS apps both because open and because money, but please share any positive experience with whatever you use! Sad to see Metatext seems to have stopped development as that was my first instinct. Thanks!

With Federation on pause for now on kbin.social, I wonder how the fediverse will handle all the outgoing and incoming federation requests then. Reminds me of the Twitter migration and things stalled for a few days.

How does this federation thing works? I have an account here, if I want to follow a magazine on another instance can I do it? Will it show in my "front page"? Could I do it for lemmys instances and "sublemmys"?

I’ve been using fediverse stuff (Mastodon and, most recently, Calckey – I’m just going to use “Mastodon” as shorthand here, purists can bite me) for over a year now, a…

I gotta say, I’m with Louis on this one, at least for subreddits that are more about entertainment than about providing essential services.

This is how I thought it would work / How I think it could/should work.

I thought this would be a super aggregator to federate all content related to a particular interest.

Taking "fediverse" as an example interest:

  • All magazines/communities with the name "fediverse" across all kbin and lemmy servers would be aggregated into a single feed.
  • All microblog posts with the hashtag #fediverse would also land in that same feed.
  • As a user I can subscribe to this feed, create new threads, add comments to existing threads, etc.
  • When I create a new thread it lands in that aggregated feed. The fact that I'm posting from kbin.social is largely irrelevant.

As a reader/consumer: by default when you subscribe to #fediverse it would have everything. Then, for more advanced users, you could configure it to filter out instances, hide/show microblogs, add/remove communities, etc. It would become your personal version of this particular interest. Combining the concepts of multi-reddit and federation.

The aggregated feed would simply be identified by say, #fediverse.
The server-specific community would be #fediverse@kbin.social, and not @fediverse, since that looks like a username.

In this model microblogging basically just becomes a particular way to create threads. All the features of mastodon can be expressed in terms of threads so the two concepts can be merged, this would remove some apparent complexity.

For writing, you wouldn't choose a particular community@instance target, you would just write to #fediverse. The fact that the OP is hosted on @kbin.social is a technical detail.

TL;DR:

  1. All duplicated communities across all servers should be aggregated into a unique feed that you can then personalize. Hide the concept of instances at first.
  2. Microblogging is the same as posting a (lightweight) thread, so there is no need to separate the two concepts, hide the dichotomy. The forum model is a superset of microblogging.

loath it or hate it you can't deny it... Reddit is quite a catchy name.

Even Lemmy is slightly catchy and I think will grow on people over time...

but Kbin... i don't know... i dont like it... remind me of vintage unix distro or something. It sound boring.

just my thought

It's weird that it's so hard to figure out how to donate towards server upkeep costs, I had the same issue with my Mastodon instance.

Is there an about page with a link or is someone hosting this out of their cushion change XD

I know the posts and content are shared between instances, but if an instance is shutting down it would be useful if there was a way to migrate your user data / identity to another instance.

I'd guess you would have to approve the move on both instances, I don't know if this is feasible or not given how the fediverse / ActivityPub is structured.

I'm really excited to jump on the Activitypub/Fediverse train, but I'm still trying to wrap my head around how it works. Kbin is federated (or its supposed to be, apparently DDoS protection is hampering that?), but I'm not sure how I can sign up with my Mastodon account. I already have one, @ArchieBAntlers , and apparently there's some way to post from this account into a kdin magazine, or follow kdin mags from my Mastodon account, but I can't work out how that works.

Can someone help me out? I want to take full advantage of ActivityPub and the fediverse, and if not having to juggle multiple accounts is part of that, then I wanna make sure I'm doing it right.

And yes, I am from the #RedditMigration

It doesn't have much to offer, the code is a mess, but I know some people would really appreciate it!
To use, just download the Stylus extension for your browser (if you don't have it already), open the link and click "Install".
The website also has a "Homepage" button where you can post issues if you have any or ideas on what to add.

I started using mastodon when musk bought twitter and kbin with all the reddit API shitshow. I like the idea of the fediverse but how does it have longevity?

(I wasn't sure if kbinMeta was the right place to post that, so I am posting it here instead)
It's still very early in work and doesn't really support websites outside threads and the homepage. I tried to make it support already existing theme features of kbin, but it still has some issues with light mode (which I am still working on fixing :3c).
Before and after enabling the theme

EDIT: You can now get it here! https://userstyles.world/style/10288/kbin-it

Specifically, communities from lemmy seem to show lower post/subscriber counts here than on lemmy, and don't display all of the posts?
For example:
lemmy.ml/c/anime reports 1.8K subscribers, meanwhile
kbin.social/m/anime@lemmy.ml has a whopping 61.
Does the 61 refer to kbin users subscribed to the community rather than the total amount or something? How exactly does this work? pls explain I'm new to the fediverse

Maybe someone should post this link every day for the foreseeable future because I think it’s gonna be a sleepless week for the Fediverse, but a great one as well.

As the saying sorta goes, if a service is free, then you’re the product. @ernest seems like he’s working his ass off for us, and certainly enough to warrant a few bucks from those who can afford it. Cheers!

Hats off, guys. I can't even imagine how hard it must have been for you guys to keep kbin.social up and running since yesterday.

As a recent refugee from Reddit, I promise to wind down my use of Reddit until such a time as/if when they get rid of their API restrictions. I promise to play my part towards the newly forming community here and create content for the community at large.

iOS App for kbin?

I am using the website as a PWA right now, but there’s some weird quirks, like having to manually log in every time I open it. No indicator if I tap on something, that confirms a tab was registered. Small things that make it tough to use. Any apps, test flight or production out there?
