I can actually feel the lack of bots, AI replies and chatGPT comments in the threads. I cant exactly pin point it to a specific trait or writing style but you can feel the humans behind these comments.

There is no toxicity, no "in conclusion", no stupid summaries.

Amazing. Although I want this to take over Reddit at some point, the small community and lack of publicity we have at the moment is amazing.

So, some part(s) of Freenet has/had (this one has not been there in a while) a "web of trust" system that allowed a user to take part in a sort of graph-based collective filtering framework. It works something like this:

  1. You choose who you trust to produce valid content (not spam or attacks on the network, that sort of thing). Others do the same.
  2. You choose how much you trust others' trust values. This then combines with your own trust values to establish a sort of total trust value. If you don't know Bob but your friend does, you can probably assume Bob isn't going to be a problem with some level of confidence

Seeing the (vastly overblown, considering the nature of federation) controversy involving Beehaw and various comments about moderation tools and users wanting more of less exposure to various kinds of content, this one thought that perhaps a web of trust sort of thing, or some related concepts could be useful. Such a system could possibly be used to allow groups of users with similar preferences to implement their own filtering preferences in a way that moves the effort from moderators making general rules and judgments and users all having to make their own judgments (including vulnerable ones who need to be protected from certain content or they will, at best, leave): Riikka needn't browse m/HatefulPricks (just contriving a mag; maybe that doesn't exist :P ) looking for people to block before they go after her if someone whose judgment she's flagged as trusted has already encountered those people.

[Please pretend there's another interesting idea here. Riikka forgot what else she wanted to say :( ]

Maybe it's useless here, or maybe some components or related ideas could help. Seems like at least it could be worth a try applying to filtering undesirable (or simply harmful, as is/was the intent of Freenet's WoT) content. Even just having a handful of guardians (or maybe some sort of service identity like a "No Bigots" user that some actual user(s) use only to mark bigots, another for cat haters, something like that?) could maybe help. If someone gets hacked or somehow goes bad, just untrust their trust list and bam, fixed. Everything's still there, just hidden. Of course, for it to really reduce mod workload (particularly somewhere like Beehaw) there would have to be some work involved on many sides of the implementation. Maybe some kind of concept of user age or other validating factors, some default configuration (so brand new users aren't exposed to a bunch of garbage no one else sees) or "go subscribe to the 'no garbage' filter list!" as a recommended step in account creation, and of course people would still have to be there to spot and mark unwanted content.

Just an idea (and a crapload of yapping... sorry (sortof)!) Thoughts?

Did you ever wanna have a username but it was taken? Us early adopters to the fediverse can now freely choose nice, untaken usernames!

Let that sink in. We have the luxury and freedom to nearly choose any username we want. without having to add unnecessary underscores or numbers.

Thats nice.

I do love the fediverse but man...what I wouldn't do to live in the fetaverse

Stumbled upon someone who seemed completely opposed to the idea of federation and the fediverse. Like, if you are opposed to federation then why are you on here? They seemed to be pretty confused about what the fediverse is all about and likely joined due to misleading advertisements.

Hey folks, I stumbled upon a big issue with Lemmy and Kbin. You know how we used to search stuff on Google like 'why feet smell site:reddit.com'? Well, turns out I can't do that for Lemmy and Kbin... yet. Maybe the crawlers haven't caught up yet but I have a feeling it's due to the nature of the fediverse. I mean, I'm not even sure which domain to specify. What do you guys think about this?

I recently subscribed to pensandpaper@lemmy.ml on kbin.social. I was the first person to do that as it was clear that the kbin copy was created with me clicking subscribe. It's not a very active community with only two old posts but the only way to see those is by going to the original instance that it's hosted on.

Is there a way to pull those two posts to the kbin version of that community? Or is it inherent to the Fediverse that things only start syncing with the first subscription on an instance and it's not retroactive?

Let me know if there is a better place to ask this question.

Noticing some people levying that against people bringing up complaints about their experience here. It's not the spirit which I hope will prevail. Also, lazy cop out in a discussion.

I still can't log into anything but kbin. Anyone know what is up here? I have accounts on sh.itjust.works, beehaw, and one of the other ones. The accounts were created fine, but when I actually go to login it just sits there on the green login box spinning forever and never completes.

Interesting bit of news for the threadiverse. All three of these are fairly large lemmy instances

Hi everybody,

We Distribute (wedistribute.org) is a ongoing passion project of mine. It's the first news publication of its kind: a journal about free, open, decentralized technologies, that just so happens to also be a federated blog. People from all over the fediverse can like, subscribe, boost, and reply, and their interactions carry over onto the site itself.

This project has existed in one incarnation or another for nearly a decade. It's been dormant for the last year or so due to personal health issues, data loss, and the dissolution of the parent organization overseeing it, FENEAS.org.

After putting a lot of legwork in, I've managed to rebuild it, recovering about 98% of all of the articles written over the years. It's due for official launch in a few weeks, but I want to start off on the right foot this time. The network is growing at an unprecedented rate, and there's a lot of ground to cover.

We Distribute has historically been a one-man operation, but I can't do that anymore. It's a volunteer project, that does not serve ads or paywalls of any kind. I'm looking for writers who are passionate about the fediverse, and interested in an opportunity to be the first to break news to a network consisting of thousands of servers and potentially millions of people.

We cover news, feature updates, opinion pieces, bits of history, culture beats, and interviews with the people who are making this thing happen.

If you're interested in being a part of this project, please DM me here, or at my main: @deadsuperhero@social.treehouse.systems

I'm trying to understand the reason I can follow this account from @bipolaron, but I cannot figure out how to follow it back and it doesn't show up in my list of followers.

I guess give it a few more days... would be cool to know if I'm doing it right with an example though. I noticed that most profiles from other servers seem to have like a "virtual profile" on this server, and noticed that the one for bipolaron is a 404. Federation should in principle be working or how would I have found this profile from mastodon?

But sending messages as private, unlisted, and global with @unblended tagged don't seem to show up anywhere here, and tagging @bipolaron doesn't seem to cause any kind of notification there.

Would be helpful to figure out if I'm doing it wrong or if I just need to wait a while.

So I notice that KBIN and BEEHAW and LEMMY all have duplicate pages dedicated to the same content. Are we as a community going to have to decide which page will be the 'main' page, will we have to subscribe to each magazine for each instance, or will they consolidate eventually?

So like, theres a technology@beehaw, a technology@lemmy, and a tech for kbin. Does it make sense to spend time cultivating one, if another ends up getting more attention?

huh, I followed this account from my mastodon account and sent it a DM but don't see anything.

is this expected?

I am so sorry if this is not the appropriate place to post this here. I have tried the last few days to get kBin to federate the above listed community. If this is the wrong way to go about it, please respectfully let me know and I will promptly fix it. Thank you!

Something here felt different, and I think I realized what.

Content here, at least from my experience so far, is not rage baity. When I go to Reddit it does not take long time until I get to some post that I go into and read because it makes me angry, or people in comments make me angry (and I have a need to engage to bark at the moon).

Here most of content I read because legit interest. Hope it stays this way.

“After weeks of burning through users’ goodwill, Reddit is facing a moderator strike and an exodus of its most important users. It’s the latest example of a social media site making a critical mistake: users aren’t there for the services, they’re there for the community.”

On Reddit, communities could have their own wikis or knowledge base articles in a separate place from where the discussion happened. I don't see that kind of functionality in Kbin, so I'm wondering if there is a federated wiki type of thing somewhere out there.

I have a lemmy.world account but can't login. Just get the endless spinnies. Anyone else? I was able to log in after I confirmed my email.

It seems like the "official" Lemmy instance, lemmy.ml, is currently experiencing some technical difficulties. It's been going up and down all morning and it isn't federating new posts.

Seems like they were right when the warned users to signup on other instances, that's why is important to remind people that you invite or you know are thinking to signup to do so on another instance.

While kbin.social has been the primary choice so far, there are other reliable options out there too. One of this instances is fedia.io, Additionally, you can explore more options on the instance listing at kbin.pub.

By spreading out the load among many instances, we can ensure that we don't face disruptions like the one we're experiencing right now.

I'd also like to know your opinions about this.

I know about PixelFed, but I'm not interested in photo sharing social media style. I just want something that works like Imgur when you upload your images as private. Maybe PixelFed has that option?

I hope this is the correct kind of post and the right place to ask, thanks in advance.
