Just like how every post will include a description of the magazine at the bottom, I think it makes sense to include a description of the instance too.

Not every instance would make a description of course, but it could aid in natural discoverability. If someone finds that they jive with the goals of a specific instance, then they might try to join it directly or hang around there more often.

On the desktop version of the site i can just put the name after m/ in the URL (sans !) and i can sub from there. but how do i do this from the pwa i use on my phone?

everyones migrating out of reddit and twitter and it's great. threads is understandably sucking up a lot of those people and has already been doing damage (18 year old girl and mum caught having at home abortion). I'm a bit confused about if I needed a new account here or I could of used my mastodon account? Can we browse lemmy through mastodon and post? Can we see mastodon posts here?

So I'm definitely missing something with Lemmy...I've tried creating an account on their site, but it's never gone through. I know we get the same stuff on kbin as we do on Lemmy, but I was curious to try both out.

Surely it's not the same account for both, right?

I tried creating my account on Lemmy about a month ago, and it just kept doing the scrolly-wheel of doom and it never appeared to go through. I tried again today to see if it would work now, but, when I try to create the account, it says that it already exists, but trying to log in does nothing.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

The first few times I saw "+18", I didn't even know what it meant because it was backwards and the threads weren't particularly NSFW.

For those who aren't aware, Kbin Cafe is a Kbin instance I run. Cross-posting our stance on Threads for visibility.

As Meta’s new App Threads has now launched, it's important that I definitively state our stance on blocking federation with Meta if they choose to adopt ActivityPub:

Kbin Cafe will not be preemptively fediblocking Meta. However, I'll be keeping a close watch on the situation as it unfolds, with my finger hovering over the block button. My first priority is the integrity and safety of the community, and with this in mind there won't be any second chances given to Meta--their first strike results in a block.

Efforts are being coordinated by @tchambers and others to build out Fediverse test suites to ensure that all new actors (like Threads) that claim ActivityPub compliance have to prove their claims or be shown where they are lacking. That is the one real defense against “Embrace, Extend, Extinguish” plays by any large actor. To join in and help with this, follow this Frendica group here:

Having spent a lot of time on Mastodon... There are tons of people there talking about federated and self-hosted services, software freedom, censorship, encryption, tech regulation... A very narrow range of topics directly surrounding the fediverse get a lot of attention.

But nobody talks about anything else. Nobody goes to Instagram to talk about Instagram, nobody goes to Tiktok to talk about Tiktok, nobody goes to Facebook (at all). People use social media to either talk to their friends or talk about their hobbies and interests.

And if your hobby is tech, that's fine, enjoy. I like tech too. But please, if you have anything else to say, say it. The fediverse will never appeal to the masses if we don't embrace a wide variety of hobbies and interests.

We need people here talking about cooking. We need people here talking about fashion. We need people here talking about immigration policy. We need people here talking about everything people enjoy!

Yes, if you go to /m/fashion right now, it's... barely there. You're not going to get a ton of conversation when you post there. But that's not the point. The point is to build out the community, so that, a year from now, as more and more people attempt to post and engage, there is a conversation. There's a reason to be on the fediverse besides the meta circlejerk over how great the fediverse could be in theory.

This is the "content" people are craving. Find or start a magazine for your city, or your town, or your country. Write a post. Share posts from your favorite blogs. Comment on something, if you have anything to say at all. Share a youtube video—yes, a youtube video, I know, youtube sucks, but at least it gives us a path to a community here.

And why? Whether it's a comment, a post, a specific community/magazine, an instance, a meme -- whatever. What has stuck with you so far?

For example I'm seeing a solarpunk post as #2 on sh.itjust.works but not on any other instance.

Related is also why it seems to differ from client to client? Maybe it's just confirmation bias at this point but for some reason I saw way less posts from shitposting communities than all the other clients? Not sure

Just found out that the Mastodon instance that my favorite artist uses (AFAIK*) defederated Kbin/Lemmy instance that I'm currently using. As a result, I think I can't follow this artist. I kinda understand that defederation is important, but... the problem is I don't think the instances I am using did anything wrong. But then again, even the line of what's considered "doing anything wrong" is really subjective, depends on who you asked.

Also, I now understand even more about the drama few days ago about beehaw
