Hey there!

I have this project "Webmesh" that I've been working on for the last month. It is yet another solution providing a zero-configuration WireGuard mesh/VPN solution. Mostly similar to projects like NetZero or TailScale. More infoz is on the project website https://webmeshproj.github.io/.

The difference with this project is I am building it on top of a distributed architecture where state is maintained on each node via Raft consensus. Requests to mutate network state are automatically fielded to the leader node as necessary - and if that node goes away - the network can continue on without them.

Most recently I released a new feature that allows independent meshes to be bridged with each other. An example of what this looks like can be found here https://github.com/webmeshproj/webmesh/tree/main/examples/mesh-to-mesh. It got me realizing that this is becoming a sort of "federated networking" solution. And that immediately made me want to turn to a Fediverse related community to get some feedback.

Today we added Pixelfed cross-posting to Micro.blog. This joins our existing set of cross-posting services like Mastodon, Tumblr, Flickr, Bluesky, Nostr, and others.

Now you can post photos to your own blog, at your own domain name where you control your identity, and have Micro.blog send a copy elsewhere automatically. When posting, you can optionally select which services you want to include: Screenshot of cross-posting options showing Bluesky, Nostr, and Pixelfed.

Because Micro.blog has built-in support for ActivityPub, your friends on Mastodon can also follow your blog directly without you needing to copy anything, or without you needing an account on any other platforms. There’s a lot of flexibility in how you want to configure this and which services you want to use. Some people even like to create a separate microblog just for photos.

As with all Micro.blog features, we’re looking forward to hearing how people use this. Photos are special, and there’s always more we want to do with them. We’ll continue to tweak the Pixelfed cross-posting based on feedback. Enjoy!

There's still a sizable userbase on #Reddit and many Kbin/Fediverse users still use Reddit. That's fine. You can help in a small way by posting interesting content on both platforms, then mentioning "This post is also available on the Fediverse here:".

This will at the very least begin discussions about alternate platforms and I highly doubt Reddit can find any rule to fault you for doing so. This is also how Digg started leaking users to Reddit, so it works. Exposure is key. You may make a new user, or get a developer interested in contributing who wasn't aware of the Fediverse before, or didn't think it was significant.

An in-depth report reveals an ugly truth about isolated, unmoderated parts of the Fediverse. It's a solvable problem, with challenges.

There are a few fundamentally broken things about how Mastodon posts work that are terrible vectors for abuse, as well as being bad for basic usability. Maybe they are fixable, I don't know. Love Reddit but tired of what's happening to it? We check out Lemmy and Kbin, two open-source fediverse alternatives that are growing fast.

Akkoma is an active fork of Pleroma, which implements ActivityPub protocol underneath and serves an interface similar to microblogging platforms such as Twitter or Tumblr. It implements a complete Mastodon client API, so all Mastodon clients work with it without trouble, even the Mastodon web UI can be installed and used with Akkoma.

Why Akkoma over Mastodon? It's written in Elixir, so it's faster and uses less resources than Mastodon. You can also define a character limit to your posts, use markdown formatting, quote posts and add emoji reactions. Perfect for small personal instances, you can run it super cheap.

Btw, this is me testing the limits of kbin's microblog feature, so the following post will be long. I will post a TLDR at the end.

It has been nearly a month since I've first joined #fediverse. Even before the #reddit exodus, I was already growing tired of the site for the fact that despite how large the communities were, they were very cold and impersonal. There was also the fact that for the #queer community at least, we had been siloed off from the rest of reddit, because nearly every topic involving #LGBTQ issues were very often met with hostility by a good amount of users, often followed by a locked topic. It was even getting to the point where I didn't even feel safe in the some of the more socially liberal spaces.

The fact that mods were being stripped of some of the few tools they had to keep their communities hospitable, I knew the writing was on the wall. I tried many reddit alternatives during the blackout, including #raddle and #tildes. But once I figured out how #kbin, #mastodon, and #lemmy worked, I found myself feeling right at home on the fediverse.

I think the main reason why is because many of the people here are misfits from other platforms. Many of the users on mastodon are former twitter users who were driven off by the corporate culture of twitter, and later by Elon Musk and the poisoning of the platform. Others are former redditors like me who found platforms like lemmy, and are in the midst of trying to rebuild the community they once had on thier former platform.

Fediverse definitely doesn't feel "mainstream" like the sites that many of us come from , but perhaps that is part of the appeal, and why I have taken to it far quicker than any other social platform I have tried in the past. I'm just hoping as the fediverse continues to grow and attract new users, that it doesn't lose it's quirky and experimental spirit.

TLDR: I like fediverse. It's weird, quirky, and I feel more open here than I was ever able to be on reddit. Don't ever change.

Does anyone happen to know how #copyright claims or #DMCA processes are handled with #PeerTube? I'd imagine that each instance must have their own policies, based on the locale they're hosted in, but curious to know if there's any standard in place for this.

I am considering starting my own #kbin instance. I have concerns about escalating costs, moderation and legal liability.

What has been your experience?

Is a #kbin instance disconnected from the greater #fediverse a poor experience?

In the typical web marketing infrastructure, a company signs up for an email account for private messages, Twitter/X account for microblogging, YouTube account for video sharing, and Reddit for forum discussion.

With the Fediverse/ActivityPub model, currently a typical user might register a PeerTube account for video sharing, Mastodon for microblogging, and Lemmy for forum discussion. But the data under all those is the same infrastructure, right?

Facebook as a mature software platform has areas of its app for private messaging, microblogging, and video-specific content, all using one user account.

Is it likely that Fediverse apps will evolve toward a similar structure, where a person or company would only need one account and could push out content of all types there, and interact with others' content with one account?

How comprehensive are #federated searches?

I am primarily interested in #kbin text search. I spent a couple of hours researching and experimenting with kbin. I was a little disappointed.

I would like to create a #kbin Magazine. I wonder how broad the reach would be. I want the search to be effective beyond my local site.
