Hi, I like reading some detailed write-ups on other peoples posts, so from now on I’ve decided to start doing it myself for some of the original content I post on lemmy, maybe as a form of personal art-diary.

I am currently on a quest to consciously develop a visual style for myself, and practice more digital drawing / painting. I have an issue where a lot of the art I produce does not look like it was made by the same person, (not really that noticeable in drawings I’ve posted here before, but it’s an issue, I swear) And while being versatile can have many advantages, I dislike feeling like sometimes I have no agency over my hand. When doing personal work I default to just doing whatever, and then try to fix stuff to make it work…honestly it’s bad praxis consequence of many years of bad habits, I’m tired of working that way, I need a method.

My goal is to make things that are deliberate, recognizable and cleaner. I see it all the time with other folks here an irl that have a very defined style/aesthetic, like… does anyone else struggle with this? It appears to come natural to most! Damn, we’ll see how this effort turns out.

Onto the subject of todays studies: Last week I watched the “K pop demon hunters” movie, it has some amazing animation work, excellent choreography and some cool songs. the story is generic but the climax of the film is mas-ter-ful… Enough to pique my interest as a non K pop consumer, and I decided to check out the real stuff. Anyway I ended up as per the fans recommendation on the music video for the song “obsession”, which is so over the top in every way hahaha.. Instantly this gentleman caught my eye, the way he moves, so energetic! Holy shit, you can see the other guys doing their best to catch up on the live performances of the song, so I just had to draw him. Still unsure if k pop is for me, though, but I love a good dancer.

When studying gesture in the comfort of my home my preference is to work with video rather than still images, so I can select the best action moments and carefully examine the motion. I did some 2 or 3 min gestures, and then I rendered the pose I liked best. I finished the exercise drawing a pose from imagination, and you can instantly see that the result it’s not as good. working without direct reference makes my drawings stiff, since I haven’t practiced figure drawing form imagination in a loooong while, so there’s another thing I need to work on.

Danas (丹娜絲) is a typhoon that formed to the east of Hong Kong and is moving northwards. She pretty much pulled away all the clouds so it's very sunny (and hot) here.

Got inspired by @wedgyblue on Bluesky to make a Kirbubu haha (Kirby -> Labubu). Decided to play a bit with the line thickness and colours, and idk about the lines, but I think it turned out cute! Now, whose Labubu did Kirby eat...

Is this...how lychee fish are born? 🤔 It's a funky mix of lychee fruit and a scorpionfish! I have worked on it through a headache and I really like how the colours turned out! You can watch a quick timelapse of the lychee fish on my BlueSky

Wutip (蝴蝶) formed very close to Hong Kong, within 800km away. She isn't even classified as a "tropical cyclone" because she was not strong enough. She spent most of her lifetime as a "tropical depression".

The Chinese name literally means "butterfly", so that's why she has butterfly wings.

I call this "Typhoon Posting". Basically, I draw tropical cyclones as humans. This is the 1st typhoon this year, and my 3rd typhoon total.

Based on her name "Myst", I decided to take the design a step further by incorporating mist around the character.

I started working on this months ago. It was supposed to be just a little test thing, but I actually ended up finishing it!

Tried to rework a few things as they looked outdated to me after so much time had passed. Her eyes looked too blurry, and her hair was way too saturated pink.

Speaking of pink, I have just learned that her hair is NOT pink, even though I used multiple official resources lol I knew mine looked too pink still compared to them, but I also thought I was just making the whole piece more saturated, so it made sense...

Also not feeling too confident about this piece and drawing humans in general, so I felt like I needed to ramble a bit, but if I don't try I won't grow 🫡 So I shall try again!

Edit: Apparently, anime Mash does indeed have pink hair, so maybe that's where the confusion came from for me haha

I lost the drive on the fourth pic.

i would like to buy a wacom intuos or intuos pro but idk how well they are supported on linux mint. do they have special software that needs to be installed or have a GUI-software too? does inkscape or krita work with them well and with linux, is the performance different on windows. thx.

I tested Procreate for iPad. I have no prior experience in drawing other than art lessons in school, so I was plesently suprised on how well the image turned out. Of course it was inspired by Bob Ross.
