Hey everyone,

I came across a listing for a brand new, unopened Synology DS415+ NAS for sale. It includes:

Synology DiskStation DS415+ (quad-core NAS with 4 bays)

2x Western Digital Red Pro drives (1x 10TB and 1x 4TB), both new in sealed boxes

The total price is around $300 USD (converted from local currency).

I know the DS415+ is a bit of an older model, but for the price — including the 14TB of storage — it seems like a solid value.

What do you all think? Is it worth it at this price, or should I hold out for something newer?

(I'm planning to use it purely as storage for media for PLEX, which i'm running on another pc)

Thanks in advance!

I'm sitting here in bed half asleep with my newborn in my lap while I search endlessly for a solution to photo storage so my wife and I can like...take pictures and not lose them.

Turns out, that goes pretty deep.

I can't really afford to just get a whole Nas/raid setup going though that'd be cool. So I'm at this point where I basically need to get like a 4tb hdd and hope to the gods that it lasts until I can get a backup. So currently I'm looking at the WD Red Plus, looking at the wormhole of specs between CMR and SMR and all the crap that goes along with it. But all these people online saying their drives died in less than 3 years have me pretty worried...

So I guess my question is, if I'm looking for the cheapest way to maximize reliability...what's my best bet? Seems like 4tb is the sweet spot for value, and it gives me plenty of headroom given what I plan to store (photos/videos) so suggestions with that in mind are appreciated.

I have GOT to sleep. Thanks to anyone who takes the time.

So, basically I bought a new SeaGate Hard drive and accidentally formatted the drive before backing up whatever internal files were in the drive when I bought it. My question is, do I need to get those files back? or will my drive function just fine without them.

Recently checked crystaldiskinfo again and within the last 24 hours my 12TB HDD SMART score went from healthy to bad because it’s (apparently?) completely depleted of helium? No issues otherwise.

GoHardDrive says they won’t replace, only refund, as they’re “out of stock for the replacement” (their Amazon listings show otherwise — I imagine they don’t want to replace given the high markup they have right now)

I’m betting it’s just a bad sensor, but if it could go any day I’m not exactly sure what I should do. Should I keep it, and can the sensor be tested somehow? Press them for replacement? Or just give in and take the refund? I still have 3.5years of warranty left so I could always hold onto it until later if prices go down, but that feels really risky.

TLDR; GoHDD won’t replace in-warranty disk, only refund and sell replacement for huge markup. Keep it and risk it or give in?

Hello, there is any way i could get Music Videos but in higher quality than youtube? there are so many that i would love to save on good quality but i cant find them, i find it weird to upload a video that is filmed beautifully on 1080p with that horrible bitrate and the bad audio compression

Hopefully this is allowed.

Might be a weird request but are there any historical or vintage books or reads (articles) about datahoarding?

I'm talking like stoneage, bronze age, iron age, renaissance, early modern age, age of enlightenment type of stuff?

Has there been a reddit that discussed this already? Link it here.

Maybe famous people into these things? Anyone.

Anything you have, just comment below.

hello all!! I am Going Insane, ok so I have been trying to back up my tumblr for months now and have finally been trying the python method and am running into some issues (the website one doesn't work, I've even been in contact with the IT team and it still wont work).

I've been using the sheepykin walkthrough from 2021 as that's the latest I can find and every time I try to enter it, something pops up. The latest issue that I can't figure out is when I enter everything, it pops back up to the tumblr_backup.py file on the utils file thing and it highlights the TAG_ANY = '__all__' which I have no clue what any of this means (I tried entering a tag and doing the command prompt situation yet again to test it but it didn't work either) so does anyone know anything about this or where to direct this question?? I have no clue what I'm doing and just want to back up my tumblr lol

Any advice or help would be appreciated!!

Not a tech-savy guy but I am looking alternative storage options. I use Proton Drive, I also have two Samsung portable, external SSDs. But I'm also looking for a budget-friendly NAS system and saw that Synology has one.

But I also want to know if anyone knows if their BeeDrive is good too? Or should I just stick to what I'm doing with using external SSDs and a cloud service?

A coalition of major record labels has filed a lawsuit against the Internet Archive—demanding $700 million for our work preserving and providing access to historical 78rpm records. These fragile, obsolete discs hold some of the earliest recordings of a vanishing American culture. But this lawsuit goes far beyond old records. It’s an attack on the Internet Archive itself.

This lawsuit is an existential threat to the Internet Archive and everything we preserve—including the Wayback Machine, a cornerstone of memory and preservation on the internet.

At a time when digital information is disappearing, being rewritten, or erased entirely, the tools to preserve history must be defended—not dismantled.

This isn’t just about music. It’s about whether future generations will have access to knowledge, history, and culture.

Sign our open letter and tell the record labels to drop their lawsuit.

I am currently looking for a hard disk dedicated to my server and in particular to plex. I use a mini pc as a server. I was thinking of going for a 3.5 hard disk and an enclosure, which seems to be the most economical option. I also want to be able to download big files directly to the hdd. I actually have a external 2.5 HDD and i'ts a craps when I download big torrent file on it

I'm a bit lost among the different models I've found the one that seems right for the price in refurbished condition, I'd like to find one at about the same price

Thanks for the help.

If you've heard during this time the Internet Archive is in danger due to some stupid record label, this site has been archiving things such as Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, etc. and has storage of hundreds of thousands of millions of things, and I feel we should defend it!

Hello! I am looking to build a new home server (I am currently on a Z240 SFF) and am sold on the N3 case. I had ChatGPT build a part list for me, and it looks decent to me but asking here if anyone with a N3 (or not) can throw some light if this is actually a good list? My primary use case is Plex, running docker containers and I want a NAS to store my photos as well.

| Component | Model | Price (Each) | |

My friend gave me a bunch of old home videos recorded on Sony 1.4gb (30 minute) DVD-Rs and asked if I could help digitize them. He also gave me a Rioddas external drive which device manager tells me is a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT32N. I am using MakeMKV as many folks here recommend but I am finding that the speed is very slow (~1.7x speed) which is making this process quite a chore. The page for the Rioddas says it has 8x speed on DVD-R.

Does anyone know of a way that I can improve the speed on MakeMKV with this drive? I assume I am running into riplock or something and I've heard about alternative firmware you can install but haven't found any for this drive model.

I’ve been using external drives to store and backup my data, want to get more serious but feel lost and overanalysing.

What do I want?

  • at least 16 TB of storage (excl. RAID backups)
  • good connectivity with Apple devices
  • small form factor
  • low maintenance
  • needs to be very secure, primary use is work
  • big bonus if I can easily connect several of my devices without always plugging and unplugging (fine if physical cable needed occasionally)
  • remote media streaming would be nice but not a dealbreaker
  • some form of access or sharing with others would be nice but not a dealbreaker
  • prefer white or silver enclosure
  • budget is up to 2500 USD, but better deals always welcome

Need help 🙏

  • Do I need a NAS?
  • Can Mac mini + DAS work? (Feels most comfortable)
  • SSD or HDD?
  • RAID1 or RAID5/6? Or RAID0 and some form of encryption + Backblaze?

Burning discs can be a hassle, especially if you're making them so they can be played back like a normal disc.

I have some low capacity Hard Drives and SSDs, 250GB and less. I figured a way to use them, not really serious use, just for fun. Use a 2.5 inch drive hot swap dock to load up OSMC and media files and have the ability to store them on a shelf like a DVD or blu-ray. The advantage is that it could take up less physical space than a Blu-ray or DVD set and you can update the contents continuously. Plus if each disk has it's own OSMC install, you could keep the metadata and artwork with the files, just shut down, pull the drive and put in a new one, then boot it back up.

Had this topic come up in a forum thread the other day and there was lots of heated debate over it. Looking for views from users here - it's fully hypothetical because it doesn't matter to anyone but the end user.

I use servers with excess drive bays and can use SAS drives so I'm happy with keeping backups as normal and using cheaper ex-enterprise drives in RAID1/5/6, these also typically have much higher MTBF figures compared to consumer drives which you might buy new plus you can get new drives that are lemons anyway, same as if you buy a used drive from a dodgy source it can also be DOA. I know MTBF isn't the most useful specification when buying drives.

Wondered what others think of this? There probably isn't a single right answer anyway, I'm curious more than anything.

Hi guys,

I'm looking to buy a 4-bay NAS mainly for the following use cases:

  • Plex/Jellyfin media server for 4K documentaries/movies (mostly local streaming, but maybe occasional remote access)
  • Storing personal files, especially large video and photo collections
  • Running Docker apps (Photoprism, Navidrome, maybe more self-hosted tools in the future)
  • Downloading torrents and serving as a general-purpose home server

I’ve narrowed it down to the Synology DS423+ and DS923+, and I’m really struggling to decide. Here’s the dilemma:

  • DS923+
    • Great for Docker (AVX support, Ryzen CPU)
    • Expandable RAM
    • No iGPU, so no Plex hardware transcoding
    • Might struggle with 4K playback on non-compatible clients without transcoding
  • DS423+
    • Intel CPU with iGPU for Plex HW transcoding
    • Enough for light Docker usage
    • Limited to 2GB RAM out of the box, only one upgrade slot
    • No AVX

I’m leaning toward the DS923+ for the better Docker performance and long-term flexibility, but I’m worried I’ll regret missing out on HW transcoding, especially for remote streaming or sharing my Plex library with others who may not have compatible clients.

Also:

  • Is 2GB on the DS423+ really that limiting for Docker apps?
  • If I stick to local streaming, do I really need HW transcoding?
  • Are there other alternatives I might be missing?
  • Any HDD recommendations? I heard about the WD SMR scandal and am leaning toward Seagate IronWolf or Toshiba N300.

Thanks a lot for any input

Anyone else hoards USB drives given out for free at trade shows and other events?

Collected quite a few for using as boot/ troubleshooting drives and noticed that a number of them perform better than the ones I bought from big brands, especially the very compact and thin types that usually come embedded in a "business card". How can generic marketing flash drives work better than well known brands?

Like seriously, I’m 17 now and I keep thinking about all those random YouTube videos I used to love as a kid Minecraft animations, Flash game walkthroughs, Romanian Let’s Plays, meme edits with low effort intros… stuff that probably had 100–300 views max.

Back then in 2012-2013 when i was 4-5 even if i knew about Wayback Machine or how to download files i'd have done it but sadly didn't. I never thought they could disappear. But now I realize so many are gone. Channels deleted, accounts wiped, copyright strikes, or people just nuked everything and dipped. And I didn’t save a single thing. No downloads, no backups, nothing.

I know now there are tools like yt-dlp and the Wayback Machine, but man… some of that content is just gone forever.

Do any of you also regret not hoarding those vids back when you had the chance? And if you did save some, I’d love to hear what kind of stuff you held onto.

For example i regret not saving my favorite romanian minecraft modded series back in 2012, Though the romanian owner deleted his channel around 2015 unfortunately... http://web.archive.org/web/20121005104104/www.youtube.com/user/FreeStyleRO2

Though i have his blogspot site archived on wayback machine with the mods that used in the modpack (multiple modpacks possible).

Hi all,

New here. I'm looking for a recommendation on a M-disc burner that can write to 100GB discs. Seems many can not, and browsing the different models online many of the spec sheets never mention what size M-disc it can handle. They just say something vague like "Supports M-disc" :(

I would also like it to support USB-C if possible (if external). I don't care if the burner is bulky, as long as it works and it's reliable. I'm even open to the idea of using an PC case mounted 3.5 internal burner if that is more reliable.

I'm looking to store some family photos and old home movies

When I scan the photos at max resolution some of the jpg's get pretty big, and I've got a hundred old photo albums to go through. My dad passed away and the old family house has alot of old photo albums, some them belonged to my grandparents even. So there's a lot to go through.

While I'm at it, I'll use the burner to backup other things on my PC's

Thanks

I am kinda new to this so please bear with the novice question.

I want to achieve the video titles of a youtube channel called "British pathe" which currently has more than 100.000 videos.

Ideally I would copy the video titles into a docs document. Frankly speaking I am confused about if there is any tool I could use to do this or if there is some sort of script I could run to achieve complete this?

Hi all,

I made the mistake of not backing up my phone, and now the motherboard is damaged. The phone won’t turn on, and I’ve already taken it to three local repair shops here in Mannheim, Germany, but none of them could fix it.

The phone contains very important data and personal photos, and losing them would be a huge issue for me. I’m open to sending the device to another city in Germany if there’s a trustworthy repair service or data recovery expert who could help.

Has anyone here had a similar experience?

Can you recommend specialized phone data recovery services in Germany — anywhere in Germany or even the EU — who are skilled with this kind of issue?

Any tips, recommendations, or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
