Looking to expand the external storage for backups on my mini PC server, and I'm having trouble deciding between an external HDD enclosure or a NAS. Currently the PC is connected to a single 5TB external HDD, plus an internal 2TB SATA SSD in addition to the OS drive. I'm looking for 4/5 bays minimum. My intent is to continue running everything (Plex, QBittorrent, SMB/SFTP, etc.) on the PC and so the NAS would not need to be a powerful one, pretty much just for managing files over the local network. Would a NAS or HDD enclosure work better for this purpose, and any recommendations?

My dad and I have probably over 150 dvd some blue ray and some not. And also a ton of cds(I will mention that later). I brought an old i3 optiplex to rip them but it is slow and I only ripped one because it took so long. I wonder if I’m just better off downloading on my gaming pc instead of ripping. I have a 1tb hdd from a direct tv dev that I can use. I know this is not ideal but I don’t want to spend too much. If anyone has advice lmk. I get like 200-300 fiber mbps with my eero. I’m pretty sure we pay for 1gbps fios: if needed I can buy a long cable and run it to my pc if it would make it that much faster. Now onto the cds. I don’t think I would download them but I want to know if there is a way to make all the track info automatically pop up so I can use a media player to access and organize the music. If anyone has any tips or affordable things I could buy to help me out lmk.

I've accumulated the parts tobuild a PC but am realizing that I want to get more serious about data backup.

've been pretty mediocre to bad about keeping data backed up, but my kids are growing up fast, I have aging parents (and some very old grandparents) and want to make sure family photos and videos are stored properly.

It seems I need to pay for Backblaze but looking at my hardware for my PC build I think I need to add some storage. What would you all suggest based on my pc build? I have several open slots of different types to add more storage.

I bought a cheap external 4 TB HDD from eBay. It was originally formatted in ExFat, but it didn't show up on Mac, only on Windows. That was the first yellow flag. The second yellow flag was that it was called "SSD" when it was advertised as an HDD.

I wanted to use it on Mac. So in Windows, I erased and reformatted it using Windows Partition Manager to NTFS, and then its name automatically changed to "SSD SSD USB." Now back on Mac, it shows up in Disk Utility. But when I try to reformat it for Mac (APFS), I get the following error:

"Unable to write to the last block of the device.:(-69760)"

I've heard of the USB scam in which the computer is tricked into thinking that there is more space than there actually is. Do you think this is a USB masquerading as an HDD?

The $22 standard version has "Daily status reports" and "Wide range of alerts (e-mail, sound, message, etc.) "

The $33 pro version in addition to the above - "Scheduled hardware disk tests" and "Option to auto-save disk test results/reports"

I'm looking for automating SMART scans every couple of weeks or monthly. Then having those files saved to a shared folder on my LAN or possibly emailed to me.

Does anybody have experience with this software or maybe another that would suit my needs? Thanks.

Hi! First off, ethically if I ever stopped my subscription this could be wrong or stealing but I like to read a lot of my online articles offline - so I’m hoping i’m not crossing a line. Mods please remove if not appropriate.

I have a paid subscription to Kodeco and I read a lot of their articles - sometimes just to learn, sometimes for future reference.

Is there an easy way to or ways on storing these “behind login” sites? At this point I’m kind of just saving to web archive but i was wondering if there was a crawling type so i could keep them without having to see if i’ve saved it or not.

hello,

i asked this question on r/buildapc but was suggested to redirect the question to /r/DataHoarder

for my new pc build, the only thing i haven't buy is hard drive storage for mostly movies or anime or things like that. (Games will be on SSD).

I just learned what CMR and SMR means.

Should I go with 4tb WD Blue or WD Red Plus?

Seagate equivalent is fine too, i'm just more familiar with WD.

I also have an additional question. Does old hard drives from 2012, (both blue and red) CMR or SMR?

thank you in advance!

Hey guys,

I have an oddly specific request. I need a USB drive that can handle read/write of small files, is very fast, and can handle encryption probably via bitlocker.

The only USB drives I've been seeing handle big files with ease, but struggle and slow down with a lot of little files.

Preferably affordable, as we will need several.

And looking in the 128gb or 256gb range as far as capacity.

Thanks

I’ve got some iPhone games that I’m afraid of not being able to play on newer versions of iOS.

I tried searching on the internet and got nowhere.

Is there a way to rip games off my iPhone? I’m not looking to create backups. I’m wanting to play them on windows without things like DRM and account links.

Preface - I do not know as much as you all and I only wanted to use this drive to store movies for Plex. Not in an enclosure (though I want to get one down the line), using as an internal drive for now along with my 8TB Ironwolf and 2TB boot SSD.

Just installed a 20TB Exos. Here's the issues I'm having:

PC takes forever to load now, one time it said it was repairing the disc upon boot up

Failed to format the first time, then I changed the name I wanted the partition to be and it seemed to have been formatted, but upon restart Windows Explorer would show the drive but with no volume. Now it just doesn't show up at all. No data has been put on the drive yet.

Disk Management will now not initialize the drive, says "incorrect function" and says capacity is 0 mb

Now, the drive shows up in BIOS and Disk Management but not Windows Explorer

Issue is not SATA cables or PSU SATA because both were swapped.

Previously, disk would keep making loud noises constantly, like every 10-20 seconds.

I tried to get into diskpart but it won't execute. Crystaldiscmark (as recommended on the sub) does not recognize the drive.

Now, like I said I'm certainly no expert. But this means the drive is DOA right? Or is it a Windows issue? I'll provide additional info as needed. I got this from serverpartdeals, not Newegg.

Thanks in advance for your help.

As the title suggests my ISP recently reached out to me regarding my data usage. They stated that they couldn't see what I was using so much data on but that their system flagged me as a having a high amount of downloadoing that "kind of" breaks their ToS. They told me I have a 2tb limit for downloads per month then they changed their story to 4tb as they progressed in talking to me about lowering my usage. They kept prying as to why my usage was so high. I told them it was from downloading my entire library on Steam (which it was in this case). But I feel like I am now on their watch list as they told me they were going to monitor my usage.

I just recently started a Plex server and I feel like now I won't be able to do it effectively because I am being monitored. I have a VPN so masking my traffic isn't an issue. I just don't know if I should just continue downloading what I want and ignore my ISP or if they will just kick me off or charge me overages. I asked about overage charges (as I did see them in their terms and conditions) but they stated they don't charge overages they just want to get my usage under control. That makes me feel bad in a way, like I kind of owe it to them to monitor my usage.

edit: I would also like to add that they asked me to create an account for a usage monitoring tool on their website to help me keep my usage down. I told them I would later but I'm definitely not going to as I feel that even though they use those same tools, that's basically admitting that I know my usage is high enough to warrant tracking it myself.

Second edit: I am worried that they know what I'm doing by connecting the dots. It's not hard to tell. High download usage (behind VPN) and a lot of uploading to 3-4 IP's (not behind VPN) that never change. Those IPs (my friends and family) are connecting to my server and some are streaming heavily. My speeds are 1000Down/50Up "unlimited" cable internet. Buried in their terms and conditions is a good faith 2tb download/upload limit. That may be imposed at their discretion.

What do you recommend I do?

More specifically, WD140EDGZ. I’ve had 4/25 fail in under 23 power cycles and 2500 hours.

Installed in MD1200 drive shelves in a conditioned room.

Hi. I have a giant library of sound effects with a bit of music as well. However, that library has many wave files in it. I'd like to convert these all to MP3, but there are so many that it would be a very time-consuming process even to go through each folder individually. Is there a program that I can insert this entire folder into that will scan through every file and convert the ones that are wave files into MP3?

I'm new to Snapraid and my first sync is nearing completion in a few hours.

This initial sync was interrupted about 25% through due to me accidentally clicking close on the program window. Since I had autosave enabled it appears to be resuming where it left off, but I want to make 100% sure that it being interrupted didn't cause issues with the sync.

Is there a Snapraid command that I can use after my first sync to verify that the sync operation was successful and my parity was not damaged by the interruption?

I have a few thousand photos I've scanned from the 1990s and earlier. Many of them have the date the photo was taken in the corner (see example here with a photo taken October 4, 1992)

I'd like to create a (presumably Python) script that uses image recognition, sees if a photo has a printed date, extract the date, and edit the EXIF data with that date. Has anyone done this before? Does anyone have any suggestions for what open source tools/libraries could be helpful?

Hello,

i'm looking for the Strategy Guides about Maximo Ghosts to Glory and Maximo Vs Army of Zin.

I know there is a Prima Games Guide existing for Maximo Ghosts to Glory on Archive.org

There should be one from Brady Games, too and also one for Army of Zin, does anyone have those archived as a PDF? I'm not able to find them anywhere.

I would buy them, but have to import them and are looking at 100€+ for a used Guide...

Thank you very much, maybe someone has more experience then i am and is able to track them down on the Internet.

Also if there are any other Guides/Documents related to Maximo, i would also like to find those...

Greetings Datahoarders,

first post !

Actually lurking around for quite some time and due the information i gathered here , i built a nice little "Home Server" on x570 AMD with 128GB ECC DDR4 and 128TB storage on zfs.

You know the pain .. my server is already going towards 90% usage and i am looking to expand.

I have 20 years of photos, a large library of stls and other stuff, that was important to me in the past.

My current Case is a Fractal Node with 8x16TB Toshiba HDDs in it. I could fit one or 2 more drives in it but i was thinking .. why not take it to the next level.

After Careful consideration i got myself a Fractal Define 7 XL with all the needed accessories for full Storage Layout , including multimount brackets :D

I am really exited to expand but in the process of getting all the parts needed to connect all drives i got to a point where i cant wrap my head around as i have no prior experience in this.

My mainboard is an

Asrock Rack X570D4U-2L2T/BCM

CPU is an AMD Ryzen Pro 5750G

The Sata Ports are all in use, the CPU had no issues with anything i threw at it yet, including game servers and plex streaming. I usee Unraid (but zfs). I want to add at least 16 20tb+ , optimally 22tb+ HDDs.

I already searched and read numerous threads and articles about HBA and Raid Cards for my future needs, but there are too many options.

The only real plug and play option , without any hassle and able to order from a normal seller would be the Broadcom BCM HBA 9600-24i , but i think there are other solutions for my issue , which i don´t know of yet. (Located in EU)

I also want to install a GPU later on , for some Ai stuff i want to try out locally. Just in case the information would be viable.

Please swarm intelligence of you Datahoarders, what would you suggest me to do ?

Thank you in advance for your answers and also thank you for all you helped with already in the past :D

I'm looking for a case that would fit an ATX motherboard, ideally has some room for a tall CPU tower cooler, and most importantly support for 10+ 2.5' bays (15mm thick ones) with airflow over the drives. Most cases in the market are oriented around 3.5' bays unfortunately and are too large and not suited for a large number of U.2 drives, and often have backplanes that just get in the way because my drives aren't SATA and needs to be individually cabled.

Would appreciate it if anyone has a recommendation.

Original Title: I want to archive 45 GB of approx. 1600 files to internet archive but both the script and the html uploader are slowing me down too much. My solution was no compression zipping them because IA can display the contents and allow individual downloads but I want to still get recommendations from you.

Hello. As the title says, I want to preserve approx. 1600 files totaling about 45 GB. The amount of files is the problem. The html uploader is slow and likes to fail very often. I kept pushing it a few months ago and when I decided it was not fun anymore, I gave up and decided to start over by deleting all files. I kept retrying with a macro btw, and it was still unbearable.

Deleting files was infinitely worse. IA python script always got ratelimited. Eventually I knew it wasn't gonna do it in time and I decided to delete all the files one by one (using macro because I wanted to stay sane).

I also deleted the derived files and metadata files, hope they regenerate in the end.

Eventually, I realized archive.org probably hates small files and there is no sane way to upload them? I don't know. I knew archive.org can display contents of a zip file and I decided to upload my files as zip with no compression. But before I do that, I want to make sure if I am doing it right.

1 - Did I come up with the best solution? If possible, I still don't want to go with zip. I want to upload all files by themselves even though archive.org hates me for that. But I don't want to spend 19238120 hours macroing a retry button or getting ratelimited.

2 - I plan to zip using 7zip with no compression. Any computer (windows 7, 8, 10, linux, mac) can extract without 7zip or external tools right? Since zip is like, the ultra most known format ever.

Does anyone have a hard drive scanning tool they can suggest? I currently have my drives set up with drivepool and I have stablebit scanner up and running. But I don’t know how to fix the 2000+ bad sectors that come up. It’s a total of like 3mb across one drive. Thanks!
