I have been recording live streams of my favorite sport for my personal consumption. I use avidemux to shorten and remove the unwanted part (basically just removing the interview at the end) and store them in mp4 format. I feel like storing them in mp4 is the wrong way to go and I should use something else which is more opensource friendly.

Is this silly? Is this something which you guys pay attention to? What format would you use if you were me? Any recommendations?

Lets say I have a pdf I want to get printed because the real book costs hundreds of dollars. Is there any kind of automated tool that could fix these kind of distortions in the old scanned book?

Official closure notice on blend.io website

Music collaboration website Blend.io is sunsetting June 26th, 2024 According to the official announcement, all content hosted will be deleted. They already extended the deadline from early this June.

Blend.io was founded in 2013 by Alex Kolundzija while working at venture capital startup Betaworks. blend.io was soon after acquired by ROLI (makers of the Seaboard MIDI controller) back in late 2015, ROLI seems to be cleaning up many of their less-profitable loose ends.

Over a decade worth of music and related audio content, a lot of which is historically relevant to many artist's music careers. I noticed many of the projects are either early versions or remixes of songs that don't appear anywhere else. A lot of artists made one-off content in the hopes of boosting their profile views. Niche as it is, a small part of music making culture will be wiped away.

Unfortunately, blend as a service just wasn't very good, it had its perks, and it facilitated a community around art that wasn't like other social media. Anyone could hop in and find music that interested them, and instantly get to work in creating new ideas. However, blend used a clunky dropbox integration at launch, which proved difficult to use. Even after moving to their own file hosting, users complained that it was slow to sync (which is the reason my own archival attempt was made in vain), fraught with software glitches and the site eventually being taken over by spam and bot comments in its later years. Blend.io was a great idea, but the execution was just not reliable or convenient enough to make it a popular tool. Related services like Splice, com and wavo.me also provided cloud backup of musical projects and online collaboration, but were also shuttered in recent years. I guess running a service that holds petabytes worth of content just isn't feasible when it's completely free and not supported by ads lol. …go figure.

Maybe not content of interest to many of you here, but I'm a music producer and I actually got my start on this very site. Joining projects and collaborating on this site was how I cut my teeth and made my first few connections, some of which I still talk to today. It's a shame to see it go.

I tried in vain to make a personal archive of this but failed due to slow sync. Furthermore, the site being hammered by users pulling their projects last minute made the site throw constant Bad Gateway 502 errors.

If anyone has any idea on how to archive this, let me know. I'm really just curious if there was something else I could have tried instead. Also discuss what you thought about the site if you had used it. Leaving this post here as a sort of footnote, it seems there's not a whole lot written about blend.io.

my failed attempt at archiving the site, at least to small degree.

Above: I devised a method of bulk converting the download (Pull) button into bookmark compatible html, and by opening the links in any browser, it was possible to link over 4000 tracks to my profile. Sadly, due to server overload and the slow sync app, i could not copy more than around 200 projects. i gave up after several weeks because the connection speed was simply too little.

Hello my fellow data hoarders,

Still a beginner hoarder here, but I began my quest motivated and determined to put some order my chaotic 30+ hdds/SSDs acquired in the last 15 years.

I recently used Czkawka on 3 external drives (1 WD Mybook 14 TB; 1 WD Elements Desktop hard drive 20 TB, 1 Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD 2 TB), to look for duplicates.

The Sandisk was connected (USB-A) to a Lenovo 40AF0135EU hub, itself connected to the computer (USB-C); the 2 WD were connected (USB-A) to a caldigit hub, connected (USB-C) to the Lenovo 40AF0135EU hub, itself connected to the computer (USB-C).

It took more than 2 days and a half to scan everything, with a fairly recent laptop (HP OMEN 17-cb1011nb).

So I wondered about several things:

  • First of all, would you know if there are Windows settings I can change to speed up the indexing/scanning process? Regarding cable management, are there things I should change regarding how I plug the drives? For example, should I connect them all to the caldigit hub?
  • Second of all, if I were to change laptops/PC, are there computer specs that would allow me to speed up the indexing/scanning process?
  • Third of all, if my main focus is the ability to quickly index/scan files, what kind of HDD/SSD specs should I look for? Highest reading/writing speeds and that's it?
  • Finally, what software would you recommend, and why ? In the past, I used to use Alldup, but I wanted to have a look at Czkawka. However, I don't really know which is the best. I plan on doing the same task with Alldup to compare the processing speed of both software.

I wish you all a great day!

2.5 years ago I backed up ~12TB data from HDD1 to HDD2 using robocopy. Over the 2.5 years, there were minor changes made in 1, which I mirrored to 2 with robocopy again.

Recently I ditched robocopy in favor of FreeFileSync. FreeFileSync has an option to compare bit for bit (very slow, not the default setting). I tested it once, it took 2 days, and it didn't find a single bit of difference between the two copies.

I guess that means no bit rot has occurred in the ~12 x 2 TB in 2.5 years?

(In default mode, FreeFileSync determines whether 2 files are identical by comparing name + size + modification date, if all three are equal, then it's a pass. I believe robocopy and rsync are similar in that)

I think for 90% people, 90% of the data are videos, music, images, and texts. These things don't really care about bit rot. From now on I'll just stop worrying about it 😊

Maybe a silly question but I got these rubber stoppers for my external drives to keep on them while boxed up and stored and to have while they are on my desk to prevent them from sliding off. Are they fine to go there or does the tension risk damage to the drive?

Ive had a drive dropped in the past that stopped working so now I’m ultra careful about preventing that

Hi.

I'm wanting to build a NAS/server to serve media. I plan to run Jellyfin or Plex on the device. I like to think eventually 20TB of storage space would be good. It would be nice to be able to run docker with a few other things on it as well, e.g. pihole.

Requirements:

  • Low power usage
  • ~20TB Storage, less is fine for the time being
  • Quiet

I'm thinking of buying one of:

TerraMaster F4-434 - N95

https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/nas/1-4-bays/109311-f4-424

Synology DS923+ Ryzen R1600 Dual Core

https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/nas/1-4-bays/100888-ds923plus

The reason I haven't so far is because I'm torn. I really don't want to run their custom OSs. While I've heard I can install my own OS on a QNAP, that kind of sounds like a shit show waiting to happen.

I am leaning towards buying a mini PC with a detectable HDD bay.

Trigkey N100 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD. https://www.amazon.com.au/Alder-Lake-N100-TRIGKEY-G4-Computer/dp/B0CLL1JT4V/

and then buying this to go with it. DAS - QNAP TR-004 4 Bad Enclosure USB 3 with built in RAID:

https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/nas/expanders/76213-tr-004

On the mini PC I'd probably run a headless Ubuntu.

This is probably not the way to go right?

Anything you'd advise?

Greetings, everyone. I am uncertain if this is the appropriate forum for my inquiry. I operate an independent thrift store under a company's hosting. Regrettably, I have encountered a setback where I have lost all the images of the clothing items stored on my local machine. I am seeking recommendations for a tool that can efficiently scrape images from my website, as manual downloading would be a time-consuming process for me.

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

At the moment the cheapest 20 TB drives in the UK are about £16.30-£19.00/TB. I'm aware that there are vendors in EU countries where the price is closer to €15/TB which is about £12.60/TB i.e. a 25%+ discount.

I will be spending a few weeks in France and Spain (but not Germany or northern Europe in summer). Can anyone recommend the best local online stores for hard drives that will ship to France or Spain so I can stock up while I'm there?

I have a spare z690 mobo with cpu and memory and I saw this Supermicro 2U 12 Bay Caddy case on ebay. It states a standard ATX would fit in there. Is there any reasons you can think of that a z690 wouldnt fit in there and/or be compatible with the backplane?

Only thing I can think of that would be an issue is the back IO panel. Looks like there will be a large gap there but I'm sure I can cut down to size the IO panel for this z690 to fit.

Looking to change out my existing 2.5 bay NAS server solution with a server with more bays and using 3.5 drives as they are easier to find drivers for.

My iPhone storage is full and most of it is photos, in my iCloud I have around 600 GB of photos and I think that the best option for me is to put these photos onto an external hard drive? So if I do this which external hard drive should I buy? Or do any of you guys have any better ideas for how I can store these photos, I already bought an iCloud subscription thinking that it would give me more storage, but I realized that it won’t.

I’ve got around 5 hard-drives that I’ve wanted to use, to hoard data, but I don’t have a drive bay.

What are some recommendations from you fellow people? I live in Australia, so I’d prefer if someone could point me to a good brand with a good reputation, that sells drive-bay’s around the $100-$200 mark.

Thanks.

I'm trying to rip an older anime dvd according to the scene rules:

https://scenerules.org/html/2013_SDX264v1.1.html

I'm used to just using makemkv to rip the video files and then sometimes using handbrake to compress with some of its presets. Scene rules are a bit trickier. I can figure out most of what to do in handbrake, but one hold up is that the rules don't allow the aac audio codec to use ffmpeg, which handbrake does. They recommend apple or nero codecs. So I'm guessing I have to rip audio from source first? I haven't demuxed audio from a dvd before to encode to a certain format and remux back with video (apparently many do this in mkvmerge), so this is new for me.

Would anyone want to walk me through what programs they'd use to rip a sd quality dvd with according to the scene rules for this? GUI apps would be most helpful. I know I could just use command line stuff, but I prefer seeing all the settings laid out. Thank you!

I have the YT link to a song from a very unknown artist, and I have scoured the internet to no avail of finding it anywhere else.

Upon opening the link, it just states:

"Video unavailable

This video is not available"

Is there any way I can download this as an MP3/4 or anything?

Hello everyone,

I developed this tool called UFC Ripper a while ago to download videos from UFC Fight Pass in a very organized manner. I created this for myself but decided to share it with the world.

Recently did a huge refactoring of the project (v3.0.0) by completely rewriting the backend portion of it in Rust. Writing this so more people will benefit from my hard work. The tool can run on both the desktop and the cloud.

It was recently published on TorrentFreak as well: https://torrentfreak.com/ufc-ripper-tool-can-download-ufc-fight-pass-streams-240524

This tool requires a PAID Fight Pass subscription. So the legality should not be a concern. but still can be.

Find UFC Ripper here: https://github.com/m4heshd/ufc-ripper

What's the best case scenario for average lifespan of a hard drive as in which hard drive capacity or model has the best life span

What's the best $/TB right now in AUD if possible

I was reading latest back blaze and the charts read that the drives only last maybe 4 on average before failing

Do SSD's have better life span for just simple cold storage.. I only plan to download large media files to my personal computer every now and then and so am looking for a large capacity cold storage drive that will really only get minimal usage so I am trying to find something long term

Will a ssd be better for this or a mechanical hard drive in the long run.. Think maybe 10 years

Right now my pc only has m.2 and sata SSD's for gaming and cold storage media files

I'm trying to figure out what to buy next for cold storage media files only aka just simple data

Looking for best bang for buck and if that means I have to keep it under 8TB for longevity so be it

Just looking for 1-2 drives max most likely just one drive so I can get some more sata ssd drives to max out my motherboard

Currently I have 2 nvme drives and 2 sata SSD's

Here’s a question for the experts! I need a storage solution for about 3000 films and tv series episodes - about 25-30TB in all, but could grow. We distribute to streaming platforms, so don’t need regular access, but upload speed is important, and we need storage solution and probably some redundancy. Right now we are using multiple 5TB drives (mostly LaCie) but this is not a great solution as titles are spread across too many drives.

I’d been looking at the G-Raid Mirror 48TB drive but have read some horror stories about it failing on too many people, including in this forum.

I’m not very knowledgeable about data storage or IT solutions, so plug and play for Mac is ideal, but willing to learn for the right solution!

Cost is a factor but we don’t want to be penny wise and data foolish.

Any guidance deeply appreciated! Thank you 🙏

I want to replace a bunch of hard drives that are part of my 3-2-1 backup strategy with a single Synology NAS.

But I want to keep the NAS powered off when not backing up as a means of preventing ransomware infections. I also have no desire to run other stuff on the NAS, or make files available remotely; I just want a single device that can sync select folders on my PC and run drive diagnostics when I turn it on.

The reason why I want a Synology is because it seems to have the most robust software for NAS, and because of RAID1 (in before “RAID is not a backup.” I am aware of that). I like the idea of minimizing downtime in case for some freak reason, one of my backups got corrupted when I need it.

Is there a better tool suited for what I want? Or would I be just fine with a Synology?
