Ultra high resolution is good for text and UI rendering, and (dubiously) good for gaming. Movies though? What an incredible waste of space! 98% of old movies shot on film look great at 720p. 1080p if you really want the crispest experience. New, digitally shot movies look better at 1080p, but that's because they are compensating for bad lighting and other modern issues with intense detail. If a movie requires resolution above 1080p to be properly enjoyed, then I'm not going to be properly enjoying it in my home in the first place. That's for a dang IMAX theater.

Most people's 4K televisions look like ass. They have really obvious frame consistency issues, and don't get me started on HDR. That being said, theoretically, the higher resolution the screen, the better the scaling will be from a low resolution. That's just not what I see in practice.

4K video is a huge waste of space. This is a tangent, but I have a videographer friend, and she has untold terabytes of unedited (barely compressed) 4k video just sitting around. You want to talk about data hoarding, video editors are in deep. It's a huge issue for her. The stranglehold these higher resolutions have over that industry is downright silly. I get that having more resolution to work with at the editing stage is theoretically better no matter the final resolution, but still. For a small time videographer, there is almost zero benefit. Most video editors have to edit with a crappy low-res proxy footage because they don't have $3000 computers, when they could just be editing natively in 1080p through the whole process on nearly any halfway decent computer.

TLDR: have 2 functioning drives with unknown parameters that I want to relink to recover data from.

when I was young and dumb I used 2 1tb drives to make a raid 0 array with macOS disk utility. I ended up somehow breaking the link but the drives are still physically in tact and have not been wiped. I made images of both drives and have been able to use DMDE to recover some of the files but the parameters were off and my photos had black chunks in them. Is there a reliable software that I could use to simply relink them? If not, what is the best way to find the parameters so I could more effectively use DMDE to recover everything? Most of the files I have on there are videos and .cr2 raw photos. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I don't know what to do. I have a Terramaster D5-300 with five 4TB HDD in RAID-5. I only get 40mb/s read and write. Is this normal? I'm so close to just buying a couple of 16TB HDD and running them in RAID-1.

EDIT: it was the cable, it was USB 2.0, using a USB 3.0 cable is giving me much faster speeds

I recall seeing someone post about burnable cds that can store 100gb or more on it.

Where do I buy those?

TIA.

So I'm looking for an external SSD to backup my files. Options are Sandisk, Samsung T7 or T9, Crucial X9 pro, Silicon Power X10. Which one among them has the best reliability record? And which one is the cooling running SSD under load?

I have read that Sandisk external ssds have high failure rate. And even Samsung T7 and T9 suffers from unexpected failures in just 2-3 years?

I'm wanting to have some form of backup for my nas but having a Second nas, cloud or tape isn't really feasible given internet speeds amd cost. But using bluray discs is relatively cheap and easy. But for the higher capacity discs it's nearly £100 for around 5 discs. So I was wondering if its possible to use the likes of Second hand ps4/5 and movie blurays, and rip over them. I don't know how mass produced blurays are written to so I don't know if it's possible to write over the data. But if it's possible buying a handful of old ps4/5 games would be cheaper than buying new discs and there all 50gb+ discs

I have external drives that are 99% full. I use them as read only but every now and then I correct an organizational error or delete a movie and insert a higher quality version or change the metadata, etc. Being 99% full means there is basically no room for wear leveling. Is this dangerous? To be going in and fucking with a full drive? My understanding is that the drive will flip to read only before it is too damaged. Is that anyone's real world experience?

I had an idea that I posted on the VLC subreddit, which was for VLC to be able to tag video files as watched with a % completed statistic. Then maybe a program like Filebot could easily move all the files tagged close to 100% to a watched folder. That would help the user keep files organized and sorted

But since I doubt that is happening anytime soon, how do you all automatically/easily separate watched media files from unwatched?

Thank you.

I am a bit of a distrohopping addict / Linux hoarder and want to find a way to keep my ISOs up to date on my NAS. Is there anything that exists (preferably a docker container) that watches for updated magnet/http links and automatically downloads the most up to date ISO?

I made savesoundcloud.app. It allows you to convert MP3 Audio, convert entire playlist to ZIP, download album cover, profile picture. For playlists, it is also possible to save just one track. Hope you guys enjoy it.

For example:

Hey Hoarders,

I recently saw a video on LTT where linus showed off a new AI software that indexes video content and tags files according to actual content. It is using ai to basically crawl through frames in the video, detect the content and tag it. I am looking for exactly that but preferably selfhosted and open source. I wouldnt mind if it used a gpt license key. It should not be amovie meta tagger, as there are many of those. Unfortionately they are all using the file name to search for meta data which is not a help to me.

What i try to achieve is tag, rename and sort my huge video library. It is a random collection of youtube videos, arte documentations, personal footage and more.

Something like replay.io or cloudinary by google but selfhosted and open source would be amazing.

Last straw would be a paid service which must not cost me a liver as my left has already been given to afford my last electricity bill.

Mich love

And before asking, yes I have tried archive.is, archive.ph, archive.vn, etc. And the site isn't down for me, it just will not archive Instagram links anymore. It has within the past few days, but today for some reason it keeps giving me a "Not Found Yet?" error despite the link still being entirely valid.

I heard that it was due to the account, so I've tried copying the link on private and public accounts and neither worked. I've also tried mobile links, PC links, and any other link types that Instagram will provide.

I've heard people have issues with the DNS but I'm not sure if that's the issue-- The site is still up, and still seemingly archives things, but just will no longer archive valid Instagram links for me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :]

Sorry if I’m posting this in the wrong sub, but this seems to be an appropriate sub to ask this question.

For context, I’ve been watching the old school PCs video on YouTube on how to convert VHS videotape to 60p digital video using OBS.

While watching the video, I was hit with a big problem, all the USB video capture devices that the oldschool PC showed in his video only worked for PCs, not Macs. This is a problem as I only have a Mac.

So far, I have yet to find any information at all on any USB video capture devices that work on Mac and can successfully capture both fields of interlaced video so it can capture and convert it at 59.94fps for NTSC or 50fps for PAL for OBS. (Preferably 50fps as I am from the UK.)

Does anyone have any idea on which USB video capture devices that can work on Mac which can do the exact same thing as the old school PCs devices did in his video, please?

https://youtu.be/tk-n7IlrXI4?si=pNVnRaaEiVn5zW7r

Please note: I have no interest of buying a PC to fix this problem (as I just don’t have the room and I’m more used to operating Macs) or emulating a PC on a Mac.

Thank you for reading.

HI! i will soon obtain an old "Nas LACIE Ethernet Disk 2T ECS PATA" just like this one:

Ebay / Specs

The unit is equipped with an old boad with a weak processor and IDE ONLY interface, i could use a PCIE to sata adapter, but i think that a refit a much better idea, i found a motherboard on Aliexpress that shoud fit (some case modifications are required) (Even comes with an NVME slot that i could use with an optane module as a cache)

Cheap aliexpress board

It's a barebone system with a built in Intel Celeron N5105 i noticed that many other commercial NAS protucts use similiar CPUs.

I'm looking foward using this with 4x 4TB drives in RAID 5, with true nas scale, i will also run some containers (NextCloud) and a VM (homeassistant), will the CPU be strong enough? Are there any other options? Also nose that this is my very fist "real nas" (right now, i just have a simple 2tb 3.0 usb drive with a samba share) so. any other suggestions are well accepted!

Looking for a low-profile GPU to handle video encoding on a home nas. I'm mostly interested in the A380 because it's much better priced compared to an RTX-4060 or 3050, with AV1 support in the box.

I'd like to do hardware GPU encoding with Jellyfin, and would prefer to run it in Docker either on the Proxmox host, or inside a VM. Has anyone done this with an A380, how was your configuration? How was the support aspect?

I don't have an iGPU or separate GPU planned currently. Below are the parts I've picked out so far.

PCPartPicker Part List

| Type | Item | Price | |

| | CPU | AMD Ryzen 5 5600 3.5 GHz 6-Core Processor | $116.98 @ Amazon | | Motherboard | MSI PRO B550M-VC WIFI Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard | $119.99 @ Amazon | | Memory | Corsair Vengeance LPX 64 GB (2 x 32 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory | $114.99 @ Amazon | | Storage | TEAMGROUP MP33 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive | already have it | | Storage | Seagate IronWolf Pro NAS 12 TB 3.5" 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive | 4x already have | | Video Card | ASRock Low Profile Arc A380 6 GB Video Card | $119.99 @ Amazon | | Case | Jonsbo N4 MicroATX Desktop Case | - |

I'm aware of automatic ripping machines and I am not interested with this option.

I have about 50 CDs that I would like to rip to FLAC format. I want to automate this process as much as possible.

some features I definitely want would be to start the ripping process as soon as an audio CD is inserted, I want the tracks to be automatically named, and tagged.

I want to do this with my existing Windows computer. thank you to anyone who could provide suggestions.

Original Title: Can someone recommend a Micro-B USB 3.0 to USB-C cable? I’ve tried three with my Elements 16tb and had problems with all of them. I’ve never had a problem with a Micro-B USB 3.0 to USB-A cable on the drive.

I've tried CableCreation, UGREEN, and don't know the third (can't find email receipt).

I understand these kinds of cable seem to be particularly finicky and what worked for you may or may not work for me, but I'd still like some options.

It's crazy that an HD I bought in 2023 even has a Micro-B USB, but that's WD for you!

Due to money constraint, I can't be using a NAS with 10 X 24TB drive. what I have ended up is 6 NAS, what's the best way to use this from your experience?

I normally only run one of them for my plex server due to energy costs (these things are like 70W when the drives are running, and electricity is just unusually expensive where I live). The rest just sits around and act as cold storage which kindda sucks. The other problem I'm facing is that the 6X12TB are going to be filled up and my Plex media are scatter on the other NAS (very annoying). The only solution for me is to spend even more money and buy higher capacity drives...

What's the most economical way of approaching this?

this is my layout:

Xpenology (6 X 4TB)

Xpenology (6 X 4TB)

Xpenology (10 X 8TB)

Xpenology (10 X 8TB)

Qnap (6 X12 TB)

Synology (8 X 12TB)
