I’m backing up my data to external hard drives and don’t really care about speed because I won’t be accessing the data.

I’ve heard the general rule to only use about 75% of a hard drive but that is advice for an active hard drive in a system.

Is it recommended to not fill up an external hard drive to say 95% with data?

Besides speed, is it better to not fill the drive up?

Is kiwix now paid? I’m trying to download the full wiki on my raspberry pi but I’m hitting a paid tier system for the full wiki. The free version only has 50k articles. Am I doing this wrong?

I have a SuperMicro SC864 and was wondering if you can upgrade the backplane to the 12Gb version. Are they all the same bolt up?

So I recently purchased a Synology DS923+ and 2x 12 TB WD Red Plus drives, and Synolgoy can't recognize the drives. Their support page suggests that I plug the drives into a Windows machine and manually format the disks, however I don't have any remaining SATA slots in my main PC.

So now I am searching for the best hard drive dock/enclosure that won't hurt my drives. I've heard a lot about how cheap enclosures can really mess with your data, and I don't want to run into that ever. I'm looking for 2-4 slots, USB 3.1 would be fantastic, and I'd want one that can do 2.5 and 3.5 drives. What would be really badass would be to have one with an M.2 slot built-in as well, but that may not exist.

I use Bulk Podcast Downloader to download the mp3s from a podcast RSS feed, but I'm looking for an app (preferably with a GUI) that can copy the descriptions for each episode and put them all in one text file. Any help?

There's a 4 nVMe enclosure that has a 60mm 2,800RPM cooling fan from OWC.

It comes with no storage. I want to put storage in - but large sticks that I'm worried will overheat.

Any great DIY hacks to cool it down? Or swap out the fan? OR add fans?

There are only 2-3 other enclosures on the market

*Nestore NA622TB3 - super thin - * StarTech M2E4BTB3 - Small form factor, seems to have adequate cooling * Areca 6 - I think they make a 4 nVMe one as well.

Thoughts?

Needs to be DAS and thunderbolt 3/4

I'm sure we've all come across really cool things. Is there anything that you really wanted that you just couldn't get? Something that comes to mind for me, I saw that somebody upscaled the entirety of Star Trek The Next Generation tv series in 4k at 60fps. Wow, that would have been cool. It was long dead and that's a shame. You got anything good?

it can't literally do anything, it's supposed to be a 3.2 gen 1 drive. It takes two minutes to copy a 8 mb file, if everything goes well, otherwise it freezes.

Honestly, would've been happier if I could've used it as a 2.0 drive, at least it would've been usable for something.

The 64gb model of the data traveler should have a blue ring, but this one is white. And you can see that the logo is clearly off (the K and the G). And the color coding of the usb a bus isn't even blue (like a 3.2) but gray (2.0).

And I think something is off with the PCB, but I don't know a lot about this, does anyone see anything more?

Anyway, got this on Amazon, seller refunded me immediately.

The packaging was exactly what you would expect from a genuine Kingston product.

Quick question if anyone knows .. I have 2 failed click of death drives, from moving. I listed them below and want to reuse the external enclosures. Is there a drive size limit on these? I've looked everywhere the only thing i've found was a generic part place reselling the board that said for use with 3-4tb versions. Just want to swap in the largest drives possible. Thanks for any help in advance!!

Hi all, currently running an Unraid server with about 7TB total in data.

All my vital data (family pictures) are backed up onto cloud storage (iCloud, simplest with all the Apple devices in my house) the rest of the data most Linux ISOs.

I'm looking suggestions on how to have a second copy the bulk data at a decent price. I'm not really financially able to do a second NAS, just wondering what people do for this kind of thing! Thanks much.

So I already have two 4 terabyte drives, and I just bought four more 12 terabyte drives, two of them are refurbished. Their factory refurbished, but it was the only way to fit my budget. Is there an ideal way to set these up to minimize failure risk? Would it be better to have both of the refurbished drives either parity or data drives? Or maybe better to have one of them is parity and one of them data?

Or does it really matter at all? Just looking for some guidance before I get them all set up. They are Seagate Iron Wolf Pros.

Edit: to clarify I am going to be using dual parity.

As per my last, slightly unpopular post, I am trying to get large amounts of usb sticks into a raid array for a nas. The stick size is 128gb. I am unsure what raid to choose, they are obviously fundamentally different from hard drives, but still lag behind in terms of speed compared to sata or pcie ssds. I will most likely end up using between 16-21 drives for now. What do you guys think would be best to optimize performance?? I am aiming for 75-85% usable storage. I'm guessing usb faliure rates are higher than typical ssds, but still lower than spinning discs. I'm open to suggestions :)

edit: I'll use 3 or 4 pcie usb cards (that I can also get cheap) to have a total of 4/5 usb 3.0 controllers and avoid some of the bottlenecks

Hey all! I plan to get a 2-bay DAS to plug into my rpi running pihole, just to turn it into a network drive for backups/timemachine of every other device. Speed won't be an important factor, since it will be a mirrored 10TB drive and so the bottle neck will be the drives themselves (and just in case, the 1gbe connection).

I'm looking for personal anecdotes regarding reliability, be it good or bad, in order to get a device that hopefully won't be the weak link in the chain.

I just finished transferring 4.22 TB of footage from one drive to another but when I look at the info for each drive they are less than/about 1 Gigabyte off. Is this normal? One is 4.224 and one is 4.223

Hey all, I’m working on a MacBook Pro with a G-Drive 18tb and after bringing my equipment to work from home today, I can’t get my Mac to recognize my drive. It turns on, the cable is the same - it was working fine yesterday and it lived backpack until I plugged it in today and it won’t show up as a drive. One odd thing is my Mac saying to plug my drive into a usb-c lightning port. I’m a little stumped, drive turns on. But nothing.

I’ve read some other posts but am still kind of confused on the 3pin connector on HDD’s and PSUs…. Some clarification or help to better understand or just an answer would be great.

I’m building an unRAID server for Plex and am using the Seasonic FOCUS GX-750 full modular PSU. My intent is to purchase 1 or 2 18TB Ultrastar DC HC550 WUH721818ALE6L4 SATA 7.2K 3.5HDD’s from serverpartdeals to complete the build (like this one: https://serverpartdeals.com/products/western-digital-ultrastar-dc-hc550-wuh721818ale6l4-0f38459-18tb-7-2k-rpm-sata-6gb-s-512e-512mb-3-5-se-manufacturer-recertified-hdd)

Do I need to worry about the 3pin power issues at all or is that just for old PSU’s?

Thanks

I'm looking for an ssd to store pretty important footage, Is the Samsung 990 that much more reliable than the Teamgroup MP44?

The TeamGroup ssd also has double the storage at around the same price point.

I have a small collection of files (~1 TB) stored on an external hard drive and backed up to a second external hard drive. The contents do not change regularly, so monthly incremental backups have been working fine. The size of the collection has been stable for several years, so I don't expect to it exceed 2 TBs in the next 5 years.

I'd like to add a system of monthly rotating off-site backups to offer additional protection against natural disasters. Some of the options I'm considering include:

  1. Buying two SSDs like the Samsung T7 Shield portables (I don't need the speed but thought they might be more resilient to transport than HDs)
  2. Buying two 2.5" portable external HDs like the WD My Passport Ulta
  3. Buying a toaster-style external HD docking station for 2.5/3.5 drives, two small external drives, and two protective cases

I'm leaning toward option #3 because it seems like it could scale well. If I wanted to add off-site backups of a different data drive, I could pick up a pair of 4-8 TB external HDs and use them with the docking station too.

Any suggestions before I go shopping?

I have the option of getting 50 verbatim 25gb BD-Rs for £37 or 50 Mediarange 25GB disks for £24. Is there much difference in these or do they all come from the same factory nowadays?

I'm looking for a system with 3 - 4 drive bays for use as a low utilization NAS device.

I currently have an Optiplex 3070 that I use for Emby Server and .arr suite, so this device would exist purely for storage purposes - It will not be running any demanding or ongoing softwares.

The system could be an old Dell, HP, Lenovo or whatever - it just needs to be able to reliably accomodate 3-4 8tb HDD's, even if I have to rig something together to fit them.

The only catches are that I'd prefer something low power, smaller form factor (I only have so much space for the system), and in a lower price range.
