I see that this has been asked quite a bit, but I've never really seen a real answer that actually works.

WinHTTrack has been great for Web 1.0 stuff, but anything newer it just goes crazy and ends up downloading the entire WWW, but still ends up missing stuff from the original webpage, because of all the js and other app BS they do these days.

Are we just stuck with doing the 'ol "ctrl+s single file" for each individual page without being to truly navigate it locally without any local resource downloads?

One of my WD 10TB Reds in my TrueNAS Scale/Plex server died recently. So on June 20 of this year, I requested an RMA for the drive. It was well within warranty - has two years left. I was granted an RMA and started the process. Since this is a server I use quite often, I opted for the advanced exchange which cost me a 25 bucks, and next day air delivery which cost me a few more. Of course they put a hold on my credit card for "market value" of the drive until they receive the old one. Fair enough.

The next day is where things start getting fucky, when I received no drive. I contact support and I'm told that the UPS Next Day Air for which I have paid is for RETURNING the drive. Can someone please tell me who in their right god damn mind would next day air a dead drive for an advanced exchange RMA? Yes, this is my fault for not reading everything in detail but in my defense I have never come across this before. Okay so I screwed myself there, but talking to support I asked them why if everything was paid for, and I have a tracking number, that the drive shows as "Tracking created, package not picked up yet". I was told that it was indeed picked up and I just needed to be patient. Two days later and still no drive and tracking status shows it's still waiting for pickup. I contact support via chat again and funny enough while I was on the chat with tech support I received an email from UPS stating the drive was just picked up. What kind of game are we playing here, WD? on 6/27 I get a notification that my drive has shipped? What the hell? The damn drive shows up on July 3rd. I'm completely floored by all of this. Is WD going downhill? I love their drives and always have. They've always been good to me, but this is completely ridiculous. I wouldn't be surprised if at this point I didn't get my money back once the old drive is returned. Also, they charged me about 112 dollars as fair market value for the drive. 112? Hell, I'd buy 10 of them at that price if they were truly only 112 bucks.

In the interim, I picked up a "renewed" HGST drive from Amazon for 78 bucks. That's right. 10 Terabyte HGST for 78 bucks. Tested it when it arrived and no issues found. It's been in the server for about a week and zero problems thus far.

I'm quite bitter about the whole thing.

Hi,

Can anyone help me with how I go about transferring VHS tapes to Digital please?

Open to suggestions of places that can do this for me or how I can do it myself at home.

  • I don’t currently own a VHS player.

I want to build/get a computer or laptop with the objective to save not only in hard drives, but in almost any other external media like Blu-Ray or Floppy mainly (if it's possible, I want to add more, like the media dashboard )

The idea is so the computer can read or write media but also being backward compatible

Also it's need to be low power, enough to make the battery last long, but being able to charge it using, like to say, a solar panel or hand crank

I was thinking in use a Thinkpad and the docking station so i can grab and go or expand in need

I'm open to suggestions

Question: What can I do to maximise the lifetime of my shiny new Exos X18 HDD? Are there any settings I should know about, usage patterns to avoid, or warranty technicalities to navigate?

Context: I've been running a shucked WD180EDGZ as my primary storage for a while now, with another as backup. I recently changed my backup strategy to one that needs three drives*, and purchased a ST18000NM000J for my new primary drive. This is my first time buying a new large-capacity enterprise HDD with warranty support, so I want to take care of it.

*I'm planning to use Drive 1 (the new one) as my primary working and storage drive (OS and programs excepted - those live on an SSD), Drive 2 as a local backup (lives in my PC, regular mirrors with FreeFileSync), and Drive 3 as an off-site mirror of the same. I'll swap out Drives 2 and 3 on a schedule so they both stay up to date.

Was looking into one of those buffalo ssd usb type drives and the price history on keepa and they all jumped up a lot around april. This seem to reflect on other similar products too. Has something happened to cause this?

I just have my 4TB WD external HDD that I carry around and hook up to the TVs when going away.

I created folders such as Action, Comedy, Crime etc.

Then my partner said she was struggling to find stuff so for years I've not just stuck in folders called July 2023, June 2023 and so on for several years as I couln't find an easier way for her to find what she wanted.

Now I'm away and sitting through it trying to sort it, looking up the movies to see if they are action etc, but come across quite a look that are both Action and Crime. So how do you sort those?

Hello everyone. I'm completely unskilled in the area of programming and that's why I'm turning to you. I would like to download all the pictures of two subreddits. The first is rimesegate, a page of Italian memes, the second would be the posts under gtlivery category of granturismo How can I do this? Any good soul to explain me step by step or even write me the code to copy?

I have a 18TB Exos that has a bunch of media files that need to be replaced / moved. Probably 5-10TB is going to be moved, deleted, redownloaded... . I could delete everything that needs to be deleted, then move everything around, then do a defrag, then redownload everything, but that's too much planning and it "ties" me down to my final order.

If i were to move a bunch of files around, cause a bunch of fragmentation, then use a cloning dock to clone the 18TB drive to a new 20TB, would the 20TB also be severely fragmented? The cloning dock i have copies over entire sectors, so there's that. Oh and the file system is NTFS and everything would be done under Windows.

I was in the market for a long term cold storage device. Traditionally I've always gone with HDD but since SSD prices have dropped significantly, I'm wondering if it is worth going for a SSD now?

Storage and price are 2 really important factors but I'm more interested to understand the difference in longevity of SSD vs HDD. If I keep my data on it for long time without using it, which lasts longer and how much longer approximately?

Hey guys, I have a good local deal on some WD40EZAZ's and I'm tempted to get a few for storing photos. No editing, no reorganizing, I'll just be adding new ones to the pile in batches from time to time. And also I will be scrubbing through them to find the one I need at the moment, but that's the extent of their use once they're on the drive. The average size per photo is around 15MB, tens of thousands of them like that. From my understanding it's a near perfect use case for SMR, but maybe I'm mistaken, so I came for advice.

Hey everyone, I'm following a dude that lives in a too far away time zone from me that doesn't save his vods (even for subs) and was wondering if there was some good tooling that'd allow me to record his lives to watch them later. (it'd be even better if it works on linux, or doesn't need my computer to be on).

I'm a programmer so I could implement something myself if there is nothing interesting

Do you have any suggestions ?

Thanks in advance !

Hello fellow hoarders. I finished my backup assembly from leftovers. What I have got is: 10x10TB 3x16TB 3x18TB

It should be solely for backup purposes and maximize space while having decent failover and if possible high dataintegrity.

What OS/Software and what config would be good. I am at the moment looking at unraid or mergerfs/drivepool with snapraid.

My main system is a 164TB (net capacity) truenas.

Hi,

I'm looking to mirror this website with this kind of tree/files : https://maps.refuges.info/hiking/{$z}/{$x}/{$y}.png

It fails frequently to answer the network requests so I should be able to skip / pause when 'down' or 'at capacity'.

I wish to recreate the same directory structure and files locally.

I don't want to overload the server so I should throttle my speed too.

Best tool to do so ? Simple wget ( can it handle resumes without download what's already done ? ) ?

Thanks !

Edit : just realized the website doesn't permit listing files under the folders to avoid crawling, I have to find a way to enumerate all the structures / files before being able to download then.. no trick to list them ?

I need to offload few HDD (3,5 inch) from my main PC to recently purchased OptiPlex 3050. Most of data are movies as I use it (main PC) also as plex server but it’s time to give this task to Dell machine.

And now questions: Best way to transfer files between 2 in future, FileZilla maybe something else?

Best way to increase amount of Sata ports, adapter from M.2 (2242,2280) to sata or Pcie to Sata?

Is running windows 10 is still good alternative? NGL I prefer not to make “full blown server” but if there be more pros than cons I would consider it.

I own 3d printer so I can jerryrig some additional adapters for HDD and eventual power supply.

Hi all

Kinda at my wits end - can't figure out what's going on but have a suspicion.

I got a bunch of refurbished hdd's from disk prices.com

I checked them out on a USB sabrent cloner/adapter to make sure they work

Now when I install them internally, they don't show up.

Is it because I formatted them via the USB drive they won't show up??

I've checked the power, replaced the cables - im kinda lost here

Any ideas?

I already uploaded everything onto Drive, and there are copies ok two external hard disks and 3 pen drives.

I was thinking of buying some CDs and putting everything on there as well just for a peace of mind.

Is there anything else I can do? I am petrified of losing those images and video!

Also, is there a website where I can upload the video to share with family? I tried YouTube but it got copyrighted unfortunately.

Hello all,

I am new in data back up and cloning field.

I want to back up/clone my personal computer. It is new and I finished setting everything up to make it ready to use. I want to copy this exact “ready-to-go” state to restore in the future if it will be needed.

I was searchig for a great software for this job and I found three: Macrium Reflect, Clonezilla, Veeam.

Since I do not want to pay, Macrium Reflect is not an option. So I have left with the two other options.

What I do not understand and can’t info about it is do I need an empty dedicated for cloning/backing up storage device? Can’t I make a clone/back up as a file/folder? What could both option say regarding to this question?

I saw that in Veeam you can make only one copy/backup. Is it true? Cuz I don’t think that I understand it correctly.

Thanjs for the answersnin advance.

I have a video stream which I've demuxed with 3 different demux tools. All are different sizes (17,676,020 KB) (17,675,917 KB) (17,675,923 KB)

May I ask why all three are different sizes as all of the video streams are lossless? I was thinking they would all be the same. Mediainfo reports the exact same info for all so don't know where the extra KB are going?

Hi, first time posting here, I hope it’s the right subreddit to ask, sorry if it’s not.

I currently have all of my PC drives full or almost full. I also have a 2tb external drive with around 600gb free and that’s it.

  1. Most of that space are videos recorded with my camera from travel. I expect to record some more tb in the future(maybe around 500-1000gb a year.
  2. I also make music so I need internal space for virtual instrument libraries(an HDD would do in this case). Maybe freeing up space with a personal cloud storage would let me regain space from my main HDDs. Even with that I would need maybe another 2tb to be safe.

3.To add to that I would like to start doing some backups of my files since I don’t want to lose important files personal or from work.

  1. If possible, progressively, I would like to have a personal cloud media server so I can stream and upload/download files wherever I go and to my other devices like TV and so.

I was thinking maybe about a NAS but maybe there are some better options. I don’t know.

As a side note I have an old pc that has good performance and I can add HDD to it but it is very noisy and I fear it has a high power consumption.

So here’s my question. What would be the best and most affordable option? I’m looking for something under 300€ if possible and maybe in the future I can go for some upgrade to it. Any idea?
