Hey everyone. Just pulled the trigger on a CWWK based build for my NAS/Plexbox, Specs are below

  • CWWK N100 Board
  • Fractal Design ARC Mini R2
  • CoolerMaster 650W Gold V2
  • Crucial DDR5 SODIMM 16GB 4800MHz
  • Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC530 14TB (x7)
  • Samsung PM981 256GB NVME

Other than the N100, drives and RAM, most of the hardware choices came down to free or cheap.

My plan is to build a single array of 6 drives (5+1) with one cold spare. I'm fine with single redundancy as they are not critical files, but it would be a pain to source some of the media. What I want to know is as someone who is relatively techminded (built my own PCs, know enough) but never dabbled with NAS software/linux/dockers, what's my best software solution?

I don't think Windows is a good option as Intel quicksync doesn't work on Plex on windows. So should I use TrueNAS, Unraid, something else? I run 2/3 4K TVs and will mostly just serve media from this with it serving a secondary backup for some personal files.

This is a huge step up from my current 8TBx3 drives so I have no real expansion plans for the next 5-10 years. Just want some advice on setup since I mainly just use Plex.

I have about half a dozen 1TB and 2TB hard drives (WD Reds and Blues) laying around that got replaced over the years by larger hard drives, and I'm not sure what to do with them at this point.

I would secure wipe and block test them before doing anything with them, of course, but assuming they're still perfectly functional, what could I do with these? The first thing to come to mind is building a NAS, but I feel like with not even 10TB spread across so many drives, it wouldn't be worth the power consumption.

Thoughts?

I'm replacing a pair of 8 tb drives in my Synology DS920+ with 18tb drives, leaving me with an unused pair of 8tb disks.

I was considering putting those in the cheapest double disk enclosure i could find that could raid them together in Raid 0, so I could add 16 tb of missable materials like media server content.

Is this a bad idea, or do you have reccommendations on how to do this?

I'm planning to build a nas and want to use 2.5 inch drives. After searching around, I've decided to shuck the Seagate OneTouch 5tb drives as they don't use that weird direct SATA to USB PCBs.

I just wanted to know from the ppl that have shucked it previously what's the thickness of the bare drive after shuckig so that I can confirm if it will fit the case I'm planning for my nas.

My GF found an old SD card collection from her childhood. She wants me to upload all of them to her Drive (she has enough storage). Most of the SD cards are half corrupt and some of them even have malware. I'm looking for software that lets me go through them fast because windows file explorer is legit taking forever to copy even a few GBs because of the both the health of the SD cards and the numerous tiny files. Would appreciate any help with setting up a sandbox to fix & test them for PUPs as well.

Hi everyone, Issue: My original PS4 isn't working. When I try to turn it on, the blue light comes on for a second and then it immediately turns off. Objective: I need to recover my game save data from the PS4 hard drive and transfer it to my PS5. What I've Tried: Removed the PS4 hard drive and connected it to my PC using a hard drive enclosure. Used EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard and Disk Drill, but had issues with both (only finding PC files, not PS4 files). Current Status: The PS4 hard drive shows as "not partitioned" in Disk Drill. I cannot locate any PS4 save data files, only generic system files from the scan. Help Needed: Advice on correctly recovering PS4 save data from the hard drive. Recommendations for other software/tools that might work. Any other suggestions or steps I might have missed. Additional Info: I have a PS5 and a hard drive enclosure. If there are any methods that involve using the PS5, I'm open to that too.

There seems to be about a 50/50 split on people saying one is clearly louder than the other. I have also heard that the hardware is identical, so their noise levels should be the same.

I've seen a few reports of people who've had their accounts deleted because they had some copyrighted material - even something like an mp3 of a song.

Concerning because if I'm uploading a lot of files, there could be an ebook or song or whatever somewhere in there, and then the whole account is seized...

But a larger issue: How did they know?

If it's encrypted end-to-end, there should have been no way for them to see what the hell these people were storing... right?

Just got a refurbed IronWolf 18TB and installed it in my O11D's hard drive cage, but whenever the system boots, I've noticed it seems to do a Power On Self Test of sorts. Its the only HDD in the PC. It vibrates the whole cage before spinning up. The vibration strength is surprisingly strong, on par with the vibration of my Xbox controller on my desk, but it's in the case. Do I have a bad refurb? Or is that normal for high capacity hard disk drives? I know in general HDDs don't like vibrations, but I've never heard of them intentionally vibrating.

EDIT: During an overnight transfer, it vibrated once again waking me up, this time while it was having data written to it.

I’ve done some research and many aren’t working right (they’re several years old).

I’m trying to save some videos and pictures from telegram but they’re set as copy and forward proof. I’m on iOS and macOS.

Is this possible?

There is SO MUCH info out there that I’m just overwhelmed.

What I would like to do is have a plex server that I can use on our home network as well as accessing when we travel. I might even share plex with parents and some friends.

I want to start hoarding data (movies, tv shows, & music)

I currently have:

  • 16TB (almost full now) WD easystore
  • Real debrid
  • GMKtec Mini PC N100, Preinstalled Windows 11 Pro (3.4GHz), 16GB DDR4 RAM 1TB PCIe M.2 SSD, Desktop Computer 4K Dual HDMI Display/4x USB3.2/WiFi 6/BT5.2/RJ45 Ethernet G (this is my PLEX SERVER)
  • Jdownloader
  • Qbitorrent
  • Proton VPN (bound to qbitorrent)
  • Plex pass

I need more drives but what do I do with them? A synology NAS? A 5 bay DAS? Ubuntu? Unraid?

I am overwhelmed with all the information out there. What do you advise?

I've just started doing this. It started because my daughter wanted us to play Grounded together and she's starting to explore video editing and wants to put those edits up on a YouTube channel. So, step 1: Record all of the playthroughs.

Now, even on my solo gaming time, I figured I wanted to record my own playthroughs as well. For editing purposes of my own? Probably. Just for general archiving and looking back at my gaming time? Maybe. In any case, I'm pretty sure I want to do this.

My chosen method of recording is via OBS and the size of the files comes around to something like ~10GB per hour of gameplay. So just imagine a game like Elden Ring for example where it's quite easy to have 100-hour playthroughs. That's potentially 1TB just for one game.

All things considered, what would be the best way to store and archive these videos of gameplay?

I'm looking to store about ~100 KB in the form of .txt files, and I will be pretty frequently accessing and adding media to this storage (about once a week). What forms of storage would you guys recommend for this, and what backup methods should I use?

I have a lot of long .ts video files but only need like 1/8 of each video, I tried lossless cut but it doesn't take .ts which first requires a conversion, then it has to re render the entire video before it can save the small part I need. so whats the best option to quickly and smoothly cut a large amount of long .ts files?

Hey y'all. So I have about 700 movies on my server and several hundred CDs.

Is there any program or any easy way to catalog and export a list of whatever I have to text or pdf for review?

I want to know if there's possibly a way to download videos but already trimmed. It's more convenient that way, than opposed to downloading then trimming with an editor.

Like let's say you wanna download an mp4 file, but you want to trim it bc it the full thing takes up maybe 300MB or something.

I know there are video editors, but some don't take video links. I was also wondering if it's possible to do so with an inspect element tool, maybe by editing some code or something.

I would like some advice with picking a das to use with my MiniPC, i'm looking for something with 4 bays that doesn't make crazy amount of noise (fan noise) I won't be using raid, so that doesn't matter. I have a few drives some of them are 22TB.

Hi all, I'm sort of a newbie data horder and I am looking at some refurbished drives to use in my plex server. Can anybody tell me if these drives from goharddrive are a good pick up? Also do you guys have any experience with goharddrives and if there is anything else I should be aware of when purchasing these ultrastars particularky refurbished versions.

Thanks in advance

I recently set up jellyfin with open subtitles. I guess I can download 20 a day. I have a few more than that I need and I have used opensubtitles with jelly before but haven't had the best luck. Timing has been off numerous times.

I'm wondering if there is a way I could just like upload, or sync?, my current list of needs and just have a software or something just batch mass download the lot and I can go through them from there?

  • I've been doing the open VLC, open subtitles, go through, find a good match and move on to the next one... for my needs that would take way to long...

Suggestions?

Has anyone saved a bunch of Blue Apron recipes? Whether it's as PDFs, HTMLs, or imported into a recipe manager like Paprika or Mealie, I'm interested in what you've done.

My issues so far:

I have a bunch of paper recipes from as far back as ten years ago, probably ~150 of them. I could scan and save as PDF, but that seems unnecessary as every recipe is still on BA's website, thus already digitized. So I have tried to save them that way.

Mealie cannot import from BA's URLs because it needs to log in. Paprika can because they have a built in browser so I can log into BA, but they export quite poorly to Mealie and the desktop app for Paprika cuts me off at 50 recipes.

After importing from Paprika to Mealie, the recipes get pretty messed up. Every ingredient shows as one item, such as "(1) 3 Tbsp oregano", and the mass parser struggles with this. At this rate it would be faster to just manually copy and paste every single recipe, but I have better things to do with my time.

BA recipes have titles for their steps, like "1 Prepare ingredients and make the base", "2 Bake the tray", followed by a detailed paragraph of the steps. Paprika to Mealie turns the title into step 1, the paragraph into step 2, then the real step 2 ends up as step 3. More manual tweaking is needed on EVERY RECIPE so again, scraping through Paprika, exporting to Mealie just doesn't seem like the right idea.

BA's website also hides the nutrition facts in a popup as an image, so scraping this is quite difficult.

Then I have to manually upload the image because Paprika exports some artifacted, low quality garbage. So yeah, Paprika no good.

I feel like at this point I could write my own damn scraper, if I could figure out a good way to optimize the data to be perfectly imported by Mealie.

Or I could just scan the damn papers, export to PDF, upload the PDF as a book and not use a recipe manager program at all. old man grumblings
