I have a lot of houses that had very interesting discussions over the last two years, and the app is going downhill it might shut down soon. Is there any way I can download the replays from houses where I'm not the mod and I didn't start the discussions?

Does anyone know if there are any civic movements to help archive and/or preserve data for governmental organizations such as NOAA and/or NASA or other agencies that might fall "out of favor" with a given administrator - are there such organizations internationally when things like this happen in other countries?

Just spotted a deal for a 16tb X18 Seagate enterprise for $390AUD/$262USD ($24AUD/$17USD per tb). Worth it at that price?

Heey guys,

Quick question related to SSD Vs nvme and PCI adapter use

My 2tb sata harddrive died I wanna replace it with a sata sandisk SSD 2tb.

But I heard and read about a option to install a PCI adapter to expand nvme SSD my slots are full on the mainboard

I read that these PCI adapter required PCI split and PCI raid function on the mainboard?

My mainboard does not have this .

Also I read if I use my 2x PCI e x16 with 1videocard. The second pic will run at x8 not x16 anymore?

So what will happen or what is smart todi if I buy a pci e adapter with max x8 speed and put in a nvme 2tb of Samsung Evo or Lexar 2tb?

Will it works and what are the advantages and disadvantages of doing this?

I read that Sata ssd is serial working and nvme is parrarell and that nvme always faster then normal SSD?

Is that true? Or will PCI e adapter make it slow and bad?

Like nvme slots internal on mainboard can talk directly to cpu while nvme using PCI talks to chipset not CPU directly.

So I'm confused?

and that's why people shuck it. I'm not going to shuck it, but my question is - which is the largest capacity sweet spot if I'm going for value?

On a separate note, What is the biggest TB I can go "external" without the need for additional power outlet? Ideally powered by USB-C only.

Lastly, either WD or Seagate is ok for external drives yes? I'm going purely for reliability here and will only touch the drive once a year for backups. no constant writes.

I just acquired the intertech 4724 storage chassis. I’ve set up everything and the last thing I need is to connect the backplane with the SAS expander

The chassis is this:

https://www.inter-tech.de/productdetails-142/4U-4724_EN.html

However I cannot figure out where to connect the sas cables There’s nothing that looks remotely like sa place to connect Dara cables

There are 6 molex connectors and some fan 4 pin connectors .

I must be ignorant or blind

Does anyone else own this chassis or know what I apparently cannot see?

I have a home server that runs Proxmox. It has six ~12TB HDDs, which are all in a single ZFS node called "hoard". This node has a size of 71.98 TB. Proxmox storage node

This node has a single zpool using RAIDz2, which is also called "hoard". This pool has a size of 47.80 TB. ZFS zpool

In Proxmox, I allocated 22TB to one of my virtual machines. This virtual disk is called "vm-100-disk-1", and it has a size of 21.99 TB. I have not allocated any more of this zpool to any other virtual machines. Virtual machine disk

My Primary Question & Goal: Can you DataHoarders help me understand why my zpool reports that it's 90.95% full if only 22TB of 47.80TB are allocated to virtual machines? I want to allocate a new 10TB chunk of my zpool to another virtual machine; how do I recover/delete/peruse the data in my zpool that isn't my 22TB virtual disk?

Here are the outputs from some commands I've run on my Proxmox server. I hope these provide enough context.

zpool list -v results in this output:

Questions:

  1. Why does my zpool report that it's 90.95% full if only 22TB of 47.80TB are allocated to a virtual machine?
  2. Similarly, why is my zpool's used 39.5T when its logicalused is only 19.9T?
  3. What can I do to free up space in my zpool outside my 22TB virtual disk (i.e. vm-100-disk-1)?
  4. Will the zfs scrub affect any of this when it completes?
  5. Is the issue of my zpool reporting 19 phantom TB related to the issue of my Proxmox storage node reporting 65TB of 72 TB allocated?

Thank you so much in advance for all the help!

Hi everyone!

Im starting my first NAS build and I wanted to stay away from Synology and other cases because they seemed too expensive and had little upgradeability.

I got an old PC base, upgraded to an 9th gen intel procesor, 16gb RAM, cooling up the wazoo and 16TB total storage.

I want to make this NAS compatible with Mac. Im not sure ZFS is the right choice for this (I am considering running TrueNas [not sure if Scale or Core]). Would this be the right choice?

Any recomendations in setting up a NAS for Mac that could also work for Windows?

Thanks!

I found this this morning Seagate BarraCuda Pro 12TB Internal Hard Drive Performance HDD – 3.5 Inch SATA 6 Gb/s 7200 RPM 256MB Cache for Computer Desktop PC Laptop – Frustration Free Packaging (ST12000DM0007) (Renewed) https://a.co/d/20XaIRk and was wondering if it's worth it. I know it's not sold by Amazon and instead from Tech on Tech. Would you still but it?

Hey, i do want to host a small nass with a couple of tb to store regular life things.

I do not want the NAS to be exposed outside of my network.

I do have a unraid license for 6 disks - never used it yet - and i got enough stuff to build me a computer with a Xeon x5675 (will order some new storage disks)

What would you recommend, should i build it by myself or just by one - which one would you prefer?

Thank you in advance

I tired going to r/techsupport and r/iCloud for this problem but did not get much help so I thought I'd try asking here as this seems like the sort of thing other data hoarders would have run into at some point.

I have collected a huge number of photos and videos over the years and so have finally begun the process of clearing out my iCloud. I began by downloading photos and videos off from iCloud.com and then used Exiftool to find the date and time the files were created. I then put this in the file name so my photos and videos could be sorted by date in my external hard drive. For many photos and videos this process is shorter as I simply can put them into Advanced Renamer and have the creation date put in the file name automatically in batches. This has worked fine up until I got to images downloaded off of Discord or Safari rather than taken by my phone. On iCloud.com it shows what date these images were downloaded but when downloading them to my PC it does not retain this metadata. I have tried downloading both the unmodified originals and highest resolution versions with edits. Neither work. I called Apple Support and they suggested downloading the iCloud for Windows app. Here I can see the images with their proper metadata however they can not be moved to any other part of my PC. I get an error each time I attempt to directly move the file to my external hard drive or another part of my PC. Copying the image to another part of my PC works but it makes the image loose that metadata I need. I then tried plugging my phone into my PC directly and downloading the photos but this too would loose the metadata. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? If this is an issue with my PC itself I may have to resort to borrowing a Mac from a friend.

Basically, I want to be able to get all my photos with their metadata. This works fine for most but not for photos downloaded to the gallery from somewhere else like Discord or Safari. I can see the metadata is there on both iCloud.com and the iCloud For Windows app but can not download them from the browser with their metadata or copy them to another folder on my PC with their metadata. If you know how to fix this help would be appreciated. Even more so if you can suggest a way to make this whole process faster as I have a huge number of photos left to sort through and iCloud.com only lets you download 1,000 photos at a time.

Hello,

we have a lot of images currently on our own little local server, they are splitt into folders and thats ok, but its still a pain to find stuff. i was looking into cloud solutions that could work but cant seem to find the right one.

Google Photos does not keep the folder structure, Amazon Photos does keep the folder structur and would also be pretty much perfect otherwise (unlimited image storage if you have prime is awesome) but you cant search by meta tags and i didnt find any other way to tag the images for search other then the automated tagging by amazon.

i would need atleast 5tb of storage and it shouldnt cost an arm and a leg. would love some suggestions.

Recently I’ve noticed that none of my video downloaders (RealPlayer, JDownloader, etc.) work on age-restricted videos anymore, & I have no idea how to get yt-dlp to work, and I’ve basically become stumped as to how to download these videos in 720p.

Any help, please? Thank you in advance.

Okay, so i have no fucking clue what any of this is, my dad always does this shit but he's around right now. When i say no clue, i mean i don't know what an ssd is, i don't know what the difference between a hard drive disk and floppy disk is, so act like I'm a fifth grader.

I'm doing this thing where I'm going down a dumbphone or something LIKE that, and cutting off from the internet except for a day a week. That day of ehich I'll download whatever media i fancy for that week, amd i meed somewhere to store it. I don't really rewatch stuff, so i don't need like a terabyte or whatever of storage space, just something that can comnect through phone or a usb to phone adaptor and my computer, and can hold mp3/4 and text files for show's, audio books, and fanfiction.

I have a decent budget so don't worry too much about cost, i can spend a few hundreds. Just anything you can tell me or recommend to me would be great. Thank you.

I'm not sure if this is allowed here, but it is related.

I've playing with a HP / Quantum FiberChannel(FC) LTO6 tape drive that has an ethernet connection. I think it was normal used in a scalar i500 tape changer.

The drive works with all of the normal linux commands over FC.

Does anyone know about the ethernet port? It gets an IP from DHCP.

I ran an NMAP port scan and found some open ports. The short version of the output:

Any ideas? There is nothing other than it can be used for encryption key mgmt on the quantum/hp about how to use the ethernet port on the back of these drives. I'm assuming that I can get diag and status info somehow.

Soon to be sharing a living space and I keep my two 1 TB external HDs out in the open next to my desk.

What would you do to prevent like grabbing of them when unsupervised. I was just gonna put a chicken cage with a lock attached to desk but wondering if there's more elegant solutions.

They're just all my vacation photos and videos and tons of catalogued things I download

The website truthsocial.com is of interest (one way or another) to everyone, but as far as I can tell it is not being archived by Archive.org. Is there some other service that can archive this site? It would be useful (for countless reasons) to have it archived, by a trusted third-party, so there is a historical record of all posts, and trust that posts have not been modified or deleted (likely for partisan reasons).

If an individual, a news organization on some other social media, etc. published a screenshot of a post, but some day in the future the original post itself was modified, the person who made and modified the post could claim that the modified post is the original, and the screenshot of what was in fact the original post is 'fake news'.

(I believe this falls under sub rule 9: "Requested projects should be meaningful to others, not just yourself" and also "large possibility of becoming lost/destroyed", and by that I take it to mean 'modified' as I outlined above.)

Possible issue with Rule 2, so let me know if this bit is not acceptable...

A certain person created a post on truthsocial claiming that he would release a report proving the 2020 election was rigged, but he never did release that report (most likely because there is no such report). Others have posted screenshots of this post, and links to it, but it is certainly possible that this person could modify or delete this post, and since it is not saved by archive.org*, the person who made the post could claim those screenshots are 'fake news'. Having not only this one post, but all posts on this site archived by a trusted third party, would remedy this issue, and be useful to everyone, no matter any partisan affiliation.

* It is possible this post is archived by Archive.org, but maybe I'm doing it wrong... I've checked many links and I only ever get an error as seen in the screenshot.

So, as I've been around this DataHoarding area of reddit for a bit now and realise I'm not weird and the only one. I, due to limited funds, look for the odd deal on Amazon now and then with drives. It being Prime Day I thought I'd look. I know their Prime Day is generally shit but you never know.

So I spot a WD Black SN850X 2TB for £132 RRP is £402. I thought "Yeah I call bullshit on that". Quick search on Ebuyer and I was right. Their RRP is £184 and currently on sale for £124 so actually cheaper than Amazon. I still, sadly can't afford it but just found it funny as a great illustration of how shit Amazon's pricing and Prime Day is.

Hi,

Today, i bought a new Sandisk Cruzer blade 128 GB Flash Drive on my Macbook air. I copied some data and it was successful. However since then, the disk is not getting recognized and I'm repeatedly getting message "Disk not ejected properly"/ Eject before disconnecting or turning it off.

I tried Disk repair but none of the option including Repair/Erase have worked. They all failed, it's brand new. Now, it's not even showing up in Disk Utility.

I had formatted it in EXFAT format, so i tried using it on windows machine but it's also not getting recognized there also.

I don't wish to return it since some of my personal data got copied and i don't want to take the risk of returning it and that data ending up in someone's else desktop.

What are my options? Please share your thoughts.

Hello, I have a two disk mirror RAID plus 6 other drives (JBOD) that hold media for my Plex server. I also have one big drive with enough capacity to back up all my media. I currently have it all copied onto this one big BU drive, but now I’d like an app that will keep it up-to-date automatically… say every night. It’s a Windows 10 machine.

Can anyone please give me recommendations?

TLDR: Win10, looking for software that can compare different drive folders with one big BU drive’s folders, and update automatically… all on a local network, within one machine.

Hey guys!

Just a quick question, for those that use ups to keep your servers running so that you can properly shutdown, how do you get alerts from the ups? What do you connect to the ups? Because for instance, my modem and server, even though ethernet connected, are in different rooms. How do you deal with that? Like, if the power went down, how would you know?

Because in my case, if I use a ups for my server, if the power goes down, I would get an alert (since I get healthcheck.io) that there is no internet/power, but I would not be able to access my server remotely since it is not reachable.

Thanks!
