So I just got an orico metacube mini because I want to setup a home cloud solution for my pictures. I want to offload all my pictures into it so that I can clear my phone and access them through the NAS cloud.

After my setup I went through the privacy policy on my iphone. I read that they will monitor your web browsing activity through a vpn certificate you have to install on your device or else you cannot use the app or the NAS. There is no way to opt out of this. The privacy policy also states that all data is kept in servers in china.

“In order to improve our Services and provide you with services that can better satisfy your personalized needs, we will extract your preferences, behavioral habits and other characteristics based on your browsing history, device information, location information, etc., to make portrait of the crowds based on feature tags so as to provide more accurate and personalized services and contents, as well as display and push information and possible commercial advertisements. “

Original Title: I'm wanting to store a lot of images online but I am very worried about the names being too long and getting cut. Is this a reasonable fear? Some of them hit the max of what Windows allows. If anyone has advice or could ease my worry on this, or at least help me be more informed, I'd be thankful!

Title says it all. I have about 4k images I need to store and I want to do so online, but the titles are very long, I like to have very thorough names so I can easily search, but I am fearful the long name will be cut short if a format doesn't support it. Is this something I should be worried about, or should it be fine?

I am looking for a direct attached storage solution (DAS) for my Mac, which should fulfil the following requirements: -High reliability (e.g. RAID 1) -Bitrot-resistant (e.g. ZFS, BTRFS) -Super-fast (e.g. SSDs) -TimeMachine compatible -Mac security remains intact, i.e. no software with kernel extensions ->All in all, fairly widespread requirements

At first I searched for commercial solutions and was surprised to find none. My second idea was to connect 2 SSDs (Samsung T9) to the Mac via USB 3.2, install OpenZFS on the Mac and create a RAID 1. Unfortunately, OpenZFS uses kernel extensions, which means that the Mac can only be operated in reduced security mode, which I don't want. My third idea was to use a smaller computer (e.g. ASUS NUC) with Linux with ZFS, which manages a RAID 1 pool with the two external SSDs and which can be used directly as an external storage medium. directly connected to the Mac as an external storage medium via Thunderbolt or USB 3.2. This solution would fulfil all the necessary requirements at a modest additional cost. I would therefore be very interested to hear whether anyone has successfully implemented such a solution or knows of an even better solution to my problem. Many thanks in advance!

I found these Certified Refurbished Seagate Exos drives for a really good price. Are these drives any good for server operations? What are the dangers of buying such drives? Link: https://a.co/d/16gGFdb

I’m currently using a Jonsbo N1 case and I’ve stretched it to its limit with 4x 3.5” 20TB HDDs, 2x 2.5” 4TB SSDs, a half-height dual 2.5GbE PCIE card, 2x 32GB RAM sticks, a moderately large CPU cooler and a built-on NVME cooler (2TB) on my mini ITX mobo.

It’s also loud as heck and the thermal performance isn’t great.

In the near term I’m looking to add another 2TB NVME SSD, in a few months a 4090 RTX and 2 more 32GB RAM sticks, and in the long term likely another two 20TB HDDs and two higher capacity NVMEs.

Because my existing mobo doesn’t support more than one NVME I’m looking at ATX options now, and therefore also my options for a new case in the near term.

Are there any good options given these parameters? I was eyeing the recently announced Jonsbo N5 but I’m not sure I can wait until they begin shipping it. I would consider getting a compact rack, but really I’d prefer a form factor more similar to the N5.

Accommodating the listing components is mandatory, being silent and having decent thermals are top priorities, and being relatively compact, aesthetically appealing (minimalist, sturdy metal construction, little or no RGB), and having hotswappable drives are strong preferences. But I know I can’t have it all…

Hi, looking to get a 10+ bay for HDD for home streaming, but not trying to break the bank... I see a bunch of different ones available on Amazon, but unsure if there is a reputable source I should be looking at.

Looking for large enclosures, as we expand, so considering a 16-bay solution.

One recommendation that I keep hearing is Fractal Define 7 XL.

Bought 2 drives from Server Part Deals, 16TB Toshiba enterprise. Listed and priced as new. The manufacturing dates were both 2021. I haven’t powered them up yet, but am curious if this even makes sense. I’ve never gotten new drives with date codes older than 6-9 months. I’ll load them and check if they show any hours on before adding then to my NAS pool.

Hi,

I am trying to come up with a clever strategy regarding my personal files.

I have more or less :

  • 6 TB of data which doesn't change often (photos)
  • 1 Tb of data which needs regular backup (weekly or at least monthly)

Right now I'm working with external hard drives & stuffs, which is not convenient.

I've started looking at Backblaze and Amazon S3 Glacier.

I've used S3 in the past for my own website, only for a few files.

There are a few things I don't understand (I'm really a noob about all of this), so maybe you can help me :

  1. How to put the files in Glacier : I only know S3. How am I going to put the Terabytes of data in there ? Do I need to put them first in S3 (in which case I guess I pay 1 month of data in S3 as well ?)
  2. How can I manage incremental updates ? Let's say I have a few more photos to add : how to know which one I've uploaded before ? Is there a clever way to do that ?
  3. Princing : I tried the AWS calculator, but I don't understand half of the fields : https://calculator.aws/#/createCalculator/S3

I chose :

  • 7 TB of storage per month (Glacier Deep Archive)
  • 500k PUT request (I will probably upload archived files though to reduce that number)
  • average object size of 20 MB

Are there other fields I should fill to get a good understanding of the costs ?

Thanks,

AJRP

Anyone know of a PCI Express x1 eSata Card (Port Multiplier) supported under linux? The only ones I can find are the Starlink Ones and they only officially support windows, though some Amazon reviews say they work under linux.

Have a 4 Bay Icy Box JBOD enclosure connected via USB 3.0, but I would prefer to do it via eSata.

Environment is Proxmox (Debian), kernel 6.8.8-2

I want to create an active windows backup with file history as well as a backup for my samsung s22 ultra using my 2tb Samsung t7. How can I make the backups secure (encypted) for both? I dont think I can use bitlocker to encrypt the entire t7 because then android wont recognize it. Using the samsing magician software, the encryption can be used/recognized by PC and android but will the PC recognize the backup in case I need to boot from external drive?

Another question: Can the backups of the phone and PC be on the same SSD or do I need to partition it?

Was wondering the best way of downloading and saving skillshare courses for later in offline view mode as I don't know if I'll be able to learn everything I want in the pace I want. For extra information it can be any file type so long as it works although the regular type of file it is saved in there as is m3u8 if what I'm gathering is correct.

I recently purchased an 8tb external hard drive because games are getting too big and I like having more than 2 options on my pc. when I plug it in and power it up I can hear the little sound that its connected but I can only see it under disk management, there's no options to do anything with it there and I cant access it through my file explorer. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

This one is short and sweet.

What is everyone doing about the summer heat and your servers?

I have a 4-bay and a 5-bay sabrent each being run by Ali express cubes (which cool better than expect, which is that they even actively cool at all). 2xraid1, 4xraid6, and 3xraid5.

My HSGT drives are running between 40-45c. A little warmer than I'd like.

I know I've made my bed with my budget and my choices.

Anyone have any suggestions for upgrade time in terms if preserving my setup (more or less)?

What are you guys running - would love to know!?

Hey guys, I recently lost about half a year worth of photo editing projects when my nvme drive suddenly died. I've backed up my RAWs/source so it's not the end of the world. Now I've got a new replacement nvme drive, but I'm considering adding a simple RAID1 with 2xHDD on the side since HDD are more reliable in terms of longevity. So 4TB nvme + 2x2TB HDD.

Would it make sense to mix SSD and HDD for a RAID1? If I setup a RAID1 with 2 nvme drives they could die without any warning at any time so I wasn't sure if there was a point. At least with HDD there would be signs before it died. I'm just gonna be using the Disk Management in Win11.

I need an affordable (100 EUR or less?) HBA SATA controller on PCI with 8 sata connections, available in EU. Recomendations required.

I'm building a DYI NAS for my lifetime collection.

The purpose is simple - SMB share over the network, and direct HDMI connection to a TV for playing movies.

No VMs, no computing. Just Jellyfin on Debian (?), running a client on startup for direct play on TV and torrent client in the background. Administrative access through SSH or web apps. One streaming client tops.

Currently 5 JBOD HDD drives. In future, when I'll be able to afford it, I plan to migrate to RAID6 with 7 disks (2 for parity) plus (optionally) one extra for utilizing old drives as a temporary storage for active torrents.

I'm aiming for small factor and decent power usage.

I opted for ASRock N100M motherboard in Jonsbo N3 with Samsung PM9A1 512Gb SSD, Samsung M378A2G43CB3 16Gb RAM, and a solid Seasonic SGX 650W PSU.

Since N100M has only 2 native SATA ports, and I want to future proof this build, I need extra SATA connections.

I'm aware of the limitions of this mobo, but performance is not an issue here.

I've spent last week reading about JSM and ASM controllers (mostly postmortems), and LSI HBA SAS controllers. From what I've gathered most (if not all?) JSM/ASM controllers are ticking bombs, probably due to overheating. I can utilize PCI slot for an HBA SAS controller with 8i, but I'm completly lost with options.

New controllers cost an arm and a leg, and all available 2nd hand (local ebay clone, amazon) are obvious chinese dropships from aliexpress.

I'm halfway through doing a PhD on this topic, but with my OCD I fell like my head is about to explode any minute now. Save me.

For reference, if anyone is interested in this build, current prices are as follows (exchange rate is: EUR 0.23, USD 0.25):

  • Jonsbo N3: 700 PLN
  • ASRock N100M: 600 PLN
  • Samsung PM9A1: 300 PLN
  • Samsung M378A2G43CB3: 200 PLN
  • Seasonic SGX 650W: 630 PLN

Looking for archival storage of family photos and videos.

Had a fire at our storage facility a couple years back while we were in the middle of moving to a new house, we had all of our family pictures in there, burned to a crisp... we only had the unit for 3 days before this happened... so now I'm super paranoid. Bought a fireproof, waterproof, everything proof giant gun safe basically that I want to put all of our precious stuff into, included what we have digitally.

I have probably 100gigs of pictures and videos from the last 15 years stored on an external HDD that I'm afraid will go corrupt. A friend of mine suggested M-Discs?

Money and writing speed and storage space aside.... who makes the best most reliable M-Discs (or other long term photo/video storage)?

Hey, I have a question. My PC, which had basically all the pictures from my life, along with my backup (an external hard drive), was stolen by a burglar. Sucks. Now I want to download all the photos I have from Facebook messages and Snapchat memories. I tried doing it from the download center on each platform, but they are all marked with the download date instead of the original date. This sucks because I would like to know when I posted the photo.

Is there a way to download all your photos with the actual creation date rather than the download date?

Any help is appreciated!!

Looking at getting a NAS for Plex and just generic data backup. I’ve been bouncing between buying a NAS, building a standalone computer, using free smaller footprint computer (not sure of the hardware specs yet), and building one using a case and M-ATX board. I have a Synology right now, but it’s an older one and can’t transcode. So, that would continue to store my media, while either computer would do my server hosting.

I do like the idea of having it in one enclosure and being done, but also don’t really care if it’s not.

What would you guys do? I’m not looking for a massive setup, but 20TB~ would do me fine. Probably a 4 bay setup.
