Many of you are probably familiar with goo[.]gl, Google's URL shortener, which stopped accepting new links in April 2018. Google has now announced that the service will cease to support existing links starting on August 25th, 2025.

This raises the question: Is it possible to archive the goo[.]gl service before it shuts down, and provide a platform where these links can be looked up long after the service ends? I am concerned that many links on the internet, especially in old forums where short links were very popular, will break.

The main challenge lies in the sheer number of possible links. The links follow a format with lengths ranging from 5 to 7 characters, comprising alphabetic symbols and numbers. This results in a potential number of links as follows:

  • 62^5=916,132,832
  • 62^6=56,800,235,584
  • 62^7=3,521,614,606,208

This means there are approximately 3.58 trillion possible URLs, although not all of them were used.

I have crawled around 4,800 of these links, which combined take up 1.7 MB of space, averaging around 350 bytes per suffix and resulting URL. Most of the length 7 suffixes appear to be unused

Is it worth archiving this service and making it available to the public, or would this be a waste of time, resources, and money? If it is worthwhile, I need to start soon, as crawling through all these possible URLs will be a time-consuming task and google will likely not provide a download for archiving purposes.

hello, we (i hope) have 500-600gb of data on memory cards sitting on a shelf, and 2 months ago it dawned on me that i really really need to back these up on a 2TB WD drive. but i am unsure of which WD drives to use for backing them up.

so the external drives, passport and elements there all SMR, now that should be compleatly fine, because i have no intention of deleting ANYTHING on those drives, and SMR (from what i have read, please correct me if i am wrong) doesn't start becoming a problem unless you start deleting files and reusing the same pace. theres also the fact that (from what i have read) external drives get hotter than an internal drive inside an enclosure. and externals dont have a sata connection, so i the usb goes, im going to have another problem. they are a bit cheaper to buy

internals, they seem like a better bet, more expensive though, but at least i could buy a CMR drive, sata, and a ventilated case, or a docking station.

it would be cheaper to buy a docking station for 2-3 drives, since i could buy one station instead of 3 enclosures, but im a bit concerned by the static discharge risk when handling these bare drives, or are internal drives protected from anti static? or maybe i should just spend more money and buy 3 anti static cases for the drives. what enclosures/docking stations would you recommend for a 3.5" drives.

now the 2 drives, wd blue 3.5" CMR 2tb (WD20EARZ) or the wd gold 3.5" 2tb (WD2005FBYZ) should work fine,

the blue seems pretty clear on the data sheet provided, its cmr, and meant for pc's, seems fine. not sure if its a helium drive or not, if anyone knows.......

the gold on the other hand, has a 5 year warranty, 2 million MTBF. but there are a few things im not sure about.

1: is the gold CMR? the data sheet doesnt seems to specify if it is or isnt. it briefly mentions that the 24tb version is cmr, but it seems very vague. so i guess it must mean the rest are smr?

2: is it a good idea to be using an enterprise drive as a home back up. do i need a special type of software to use this drive, and if so where do i download this. and since its an enterprise drive doesnt that mean its meant to be running 24/7 in a climate controlled environment, will sitting on a shelf in a normal home environment be ok?

i kind of rambled on a bit there, sorry.

thanks in advance.

This is the link: Amazon.com: ACASIS 500GB USB3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive for Desktop Laptop HDD Hard Disk (500GB, Black)

My school is decreasing onedrive storage from an amount i would never reach to only 5 gb. i currently have 15 gb of stuff saved, so i am trying to find something (quick - we only got 2 weeks notice) to offload my files to. i don't like google drive and don't want to pay more for my monthly cloud subscription. i may just start paying for microsoft cloud but i realized i don't want/need to have everything stored on the cloud.

I'm working on archiving my media, first my various Box Sets, then my Games and Web Content. And that got me thinking...

What if I could scrape not just the videos, but the comment, descriptions, channel pages, thumbnails, and PfPs from my favorite channels and plug them into a program that Simulated the YouTube frontend or a more classic variant using all that data?

I could have a classic YT Browsing experience without anything close to an internet connection.

Is this feasible, and if so, does it exist?

I know YT-DLP can download comments and descriptions, though I'm not yet familiar with using it.

Please excuse me, for I am dumb.

I'm also fairly certain I know what the anwser to this is, but I have anxiety and not knowing 100% for sure has been like a pebble I can't get out of my shoe.

JPG compresses and TIFF is lossless.

What does JPG being compressed... mean?

If I copy a backed up photo and paste it somewhere else, does that damage the new JPG?

If I open the backup photo, edit it, and save a copy, does that damage the original JPG? (I don't know why it would, but as I already said, I'm dumb and anxious.)

But the copy is a lower quality than the original?

If I'm going to have a digital photo album, that I'm only going to look at and not edit, do I need to convert my JPGs to TIFFs for 'long term storage'?

I interpret this as good results, but the red and warning give me pause. It says the card is like defective, but if I’m reading this right, it was able to test all but 2mb out of 500gb.

Hello, I'd like to buy a new external drive as the one I currently have is almost full. I planned to get the same one, WD Elements Portable 1TB (HDD) and use it as a backup for some photos, videos and other things. However, I've also thought of trying to install some games on it (such as Hogwarts Legacy, TS4, etc) and found another drive - SureFire GX3 Gaming SSD USB 3.2 Gen 1 1TB, which is suitable for gaming. And so I have a dilemma and don't know which one to choose. They cost about the same, but WD has more reviews at the store I'd get it from (2,228) while SureFire only has 48 reviews. I've also noticed that some other SureFire model just stopped working all of sudden and the plastic is very light, so I worry about it not lasting long. Which do you think would be better? Thank you for any advice

I have tested several tools recommended in this sub, and I've been using FastCopy for a few months now. Today, I had some time to look up new comparisons, experience reports, and recommendations, and I came across the FastCopy Pro License and its features. The most interesting features for me are the shell extension in Windows 11 and "even faster speeds." Does anyone have experience with the Pro License and can tell me if the purchase is worth it? Thanks, everyone!

Does anyone know how can I get this 3d model from the emersya online viewer ? I am struggling as the 3d file appears in the network tab as a bin file that is transferred via xhr. I tried to reverse engineer the bin file with no success. Maybe the solution is to intercept the decoded data in the js but the code is 50000 lines long. I would appreciate any help.

Price, capacity, and form factor check off all my needs, but there aren’t many reviews of it. Wondering if it’s a rebadge of something else.

I’m currently using a Fractal Design tower but have maxed out at 11 drives.

Basically looking for - <24” depth, ATX PSU compatibility, and expand ability. This almost looks like the Silverstone cases but significantly cheaper.

I'm looking to add 4 HDD's to an external enclosure, was thinking of the Syba SY-ENC50104 Enclosure, I'm having a hard time determining if an esata PCIe card would be able to handle the speeds. is an Esata card the best option? are there any better enclosures? I'm mainly planning on using them for a media center, where I have a few people who will be streaming at the same time

Hey guys,

I'm from Eastern Europe and I'll be going to Boston in the beginning of September for work purposes for about a week.

I want to buy some used drives from SPD for the first time and I have some questions:

  1. How fast do SPD deliver the drives after the online purchase?
  2. Is the delivery done in some secure matter (I'll have them delivered to the US office of my company)?
  3. Is their packaging secure enough for international travel or should I bring my enclosures?
  4. I guess I should pay VAT after reaching Europe?

I'll appreciate any tips that you have when buying from them and if any one of you have experience traveling with refurbished drives.

I'll try to test the drives when I get them using external sata cables and power through my Steam Deck in order to return any problem drives.

Thanks in advance!

I've got a very janky but working setup (tested on 2.5" ssd)

M93p tiny (my server):

mPCIE > mPCIE to 2x SATA 3.0 > external disk

USB 2.0 (3W power but it's connected to usb 3.0 so technically 5W) + USB 3.0 (5W power + data) > sata power extender to seperate it from sata data > external disk

I can either get a 2TB ssd (crucial mx500) or 12TB hdd (forgot name but it's on serverpartdeals refurbished for same price as the ssd)

My issue is that the hdd consumes way more than 8W and won't work in my janky setup (too little power output), any tips on how to power the hdd if I we're to get it?

I'm making a very compact archive of books, software, os, movies, and it would be nice to have 12TB for theese.

I can technically get my old desktop computer that is like 15 years old back to life, but I'd have to figure out how to showe Ubuntu 22.04LTS on it (I'm getting errors that the intall medium is corrupted, but actually the mobo is too old for it. (No setting in rufus changes the outcome).

External psu for the hdd is ok, I just coudn't find any.

Hello. I've long been looking for a way to download medium articles (there is a series I love to read but I want to read it offline as well).

The most common method I've seen recommended is to click the "print option" on the article, which allows you to download it as a PDF. This however leaves the ugly medium header on the top, which I would love to avoid.

the "sign in and open in app and whatnot" part is what I want to avoid, plus all the "follow and share" stuff under the headline too

When looking for a way/addon to download medium articles as a pure text+image PDF, the recommended ways either screw something up (like for example not having images), have the same problem as just clicking "print" or they are not something I wanted (many tutorials are about viewing paywalled articles).

Does anyone have a way to download these articles?

I have a few movies that are like 2-4 gb on my computer. I want to add then to a flash drive and store them there but there isnt enough space. What is the best way to compress movie files (.mp4 and .mkv) to save the max space and retain quality.

Also is the so called quality loss when compressing really noticable after decompression?
