Hello new here, I currently have another drive on the way and will be using windows storage pool since I just want "one" drive. Not looking to have the most insane performance but would like to know if there's anything to change from default.

For reference, I will be using 2, 2tb pcie 4.0 nvme in a "raid 0" config for mass storage of games and other non vital data. I'm mainly just looking to see if stripe size should be altered or if it could be, or if there's any other advice to make sure it works optimally. Thanks

Podcasts, unfortunately, disappear off the Internet quite often. The smaller the podcast, the more likely this is. Fortunately, we can do something to prevent this.

I have a very simple system for archiving podcasts that anyone can easily replicate:

  1. Search on archive.org to see if the podcast has already been saved there.
  2. Paste the podcast’s RSS feed into the free, open source Windows app Podcast Bulk Downloader: https://github.com/cnovel/PodcastBulkDownloader/releases (For Mac and Linux, you can use gPodder: https://gpodder.github.io/)
  3. Make sure to select “Date prefix” in Podcast Bulk Downloader before downloading. This puts the episode release date in YYYY-MM-DD format at the beginning of the file name, which is important if you want to listen to the episodes in chronological order. Then hit “Download”. (In gPodder, go to Preferences → Extensions → check “Rename episodes after download” → Click “Edit config” → Check “extensions.rename_download.add_sortdate”.)
  4. Create an account on archive.org with an email address you don’t care about and upload the files there. (It’s bewildering, but your email address is publicly revealed when you upload any file to archive.org and they do not ever warn you about this. Firefox Relay is a good tool for this: https://relay.firefox.com/) Include a jpeg or png file (preferably, jpeg because it displays better on archive.org) of the album art in your upload and it will automatically become the thumbnail for your upload.

That’s it! You’re done!

Edit: in the title, I meant 4.0

I know the memory and speed won't be overly impressive, but does anyone know of a USB type C flashdrive that fits flush against the side of a laptop (think of a wireless mouse receiver).

I have a USB 3.0 256Gb one from Samsung that pertudes about 1/4 inch that I've used for additional storage for quite some time now. I just leave it plugged in and forget it's there. But I will be getting a new laptop soon and all the models I'm looking at only have USB C ports.

Please let me know if you have any recommendations, and all advice is welcome. I'm terribly knowledgeable in this area.

Hi everyone,

I am in the process of trying to sort my data out and get organised. I was thinking of building a combined NAS/Plex server but I don't have the $$$ for that right now (I will build Intel 12th gen next year). However I need some advice on HDD's that i'm getting now as a 'stage 1' before building server next year.

Now - Stage 1

  • get a 2TB WD Blue for personal docs/photos
    • back up to Ext HDD
    • back up to cloud (still looking for provider, any recommendations?)
  • get a 4TB or 8TB for Plex media
    • run plex from main pc
    • back up to cloud if i can find a provider that allows me enough space

I don't know whether to get WD Blue for Plex Media or WD Red Plus - I have read that WD Red Plus doesn't like running as a single drive? and should only be in a RAID? That is why I am thinking Blue - but if Red can run as a single drive then it's 1 less drive to buy down the line for the NAS/Media server?

Help! lol....my brain feels like its about to explode with opinions on HDD's !

Also down the line do I really need to run RAID or can I just use a simple 'backup' software to another drive (like windows mirror backup?) I'm just getting my head around this bit.

Thank you!

So I am looking for some drives for my R730. After spending a lot of time down the rabbit hole I concluded I should probably empty my pockets and go for SSD's, but I just want to confirm that isn't a very stupid choice.

regarding SSD specifically, WD RED or Ironwolf?

thank you very much!

edit: I have a PERC H730 mini installed

I have recently bought a Android TV Boxy 4k media device because I’ve heard that it can play ISO files from a connected USB hard drive.

However, even when downloading Kodi to the device, none of the ISO files from the USB drive would show up. I am able to convert the video on the DVDs to an MP4 file format, however, I am wanting to be able to play the DVDs with their original menus, pretty much being able to digitize and save my DVDs on a USB drive and using the USB drive as a player on my tv.

So I’m wondering, is there a way to convert the DVDs to digital with their menus and watch them on a TV (without streaming them via Bluetooth) and have it be like playing them in a DVD player?

Recently aquired several 3.5" & 2.5" SAS HDD's and been looking for a way to read and reformat them to hoard more data. None of the converter cords I've got off Amazon/ eBay have worked and the docking station I see online are all $100+. Does anyone know of a cheaper way to convert an SAS connection to SATA or USB? Looking for any way for my computer to recognize it.

I have been using a 3.5" HDD SATA 3.0 docking station that uses a 12V - 5A wall plugged connection. Thank you for any advice on this!

There is a website that is closing in a very short time and it has free pictures. I want to download them all. Because manually it takes forever. A zip or any other way so i can just get those images on harddrive(s). There's so much to download, it wont be possible to do it by hand.

I just want it to be done easy and preferably as zip archive or something. Because getting images manually is gonna crash my pc and it's also gonna take forever to ever reach the bottom.. it won't be possible. So in order to get as much as I can, preferably everything, with minimal losses (because every second new ones are uploaded).

This is free stuff. I have no idea where else to look for an answer. I need the solution and i need it now, please.

Im not programmer.

Hiya,

maybe i'm wrong, but for some reason, i think solidigm SSD (the cheap ones) are RAM less, and they make it up in excellent firmware and using the system memory.

if that is the case, what happens to the usability of the SSD when i put it in a m.2 to usb box and use it as a storage backup? but then again, most of it will be 4k serial I/O. But i do need it to work as fast as a hard disk if i want to occasionally edit a file.

i'm asking cuz solidigm SSD are much much cheaper per GB than any other solution.

Hey all,

I'm starting to get into data hoarding. It started with YouTube, then music, then other media, and I've filled up 2 computers, a 256GB USB drive, and I have to fish out my other 1TB external drive. I don't like how spread out all of my media is right now.

I'm typically broke, so I'm looking for some budget setups for data hoarding. My ISP has an uncapped amount of bandwidth, so I make sure to take advantage of ~1TB in downloads every month :p. I need to stop deleting videos/music I don't listen to though, as I feel like I put all this work into building up this amazing library, then have to delete it.

I'm considering, due to a sale at a local Best Buy, creating a RAID array of 128GB USB drives. They were on sale for $11 (with USB 3 and good read speeds, I have the 256GB version and it's good), so I feel like this could be a good start. I'm not crazy over speed, so that's not a concern.

Any suggestions/tips for a decent setup for less?

Hey fellow hoarders, I have about 50 VHS tapes with many family memories that I want to convert. I bought a Nero Recode stick to do so. The main problem is, I connect everything, play the tape, and record via Windows Camera, but I don't get any sound. The video recording function works great, and I'm using the red, yellow, and white RCA cables for left sound, right sound, and video signal, which confuses me because it should have sound.Does anyone have tips to make it work? I'm doing this on a Windows 10 machine, which should be plug-and-play if you trust Nero's advertising. I'd be very thankful if anyone can help me.

Currently looking into setting up a NAS-based backup (as a secondary backup to an existing setup) and I figured I'd ask about decent solutions which this sub relies on for automatic/scheduled backups.

Free programs would be nice, but I'm not opposed to paid options (if they're not too expensive). I am running a windows host.

When downloading a file, say an image, the only configurable options are the download location, the file name, and the file type. Is there a way or a software that lets you add other properties like windows comments without having to add them after?

I currently have a 3x8TB mdadm raid5 setup, and after checking the array (echo check > /sys/block/md127/md/sync_action) I got the following messages in dmesg:

[122522.233018] md: md127: data-check done.

[122523.551399] md127: mismatch sector in range 15627583560-15627583568

I found the following post on how to figure out which files are affected: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/730307/find-files-contained-in-sector-of-a-raid-array

I don't have LVM, but I think I got it right by just dividing all numbers by 8 and looking for inodes in the corresponding blocks (i.e. for 15627583488 I would do icheck 1953447936 in debugfs). All those ranges return the same inode, affecting one file (presumably, if I have done it correctly).

For reference:

# fdisk -u -l /dev/md127
Disk /dev/md127: 14.55 TiB, 16002645753856 bytes, 31255167488 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 4096 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 65536 bytes / 131072 bytes

# tune2fs -l /dev/md127 | grep Block
Block count: 3906895872
Block size: 4096
Blocks per group: 32768

Now I'm left with 2 questions:

  • How can I validate that I followed the process correctly? Just to try, I read out the whole file (cat file > /dev/null), but that didn't cause any additional similar messages in mdadm (I guess it doesn't check for mismatches when just reading the file).
  • If I run the repair action, what will happen exactly? Will it just choose any of 2 possible blocks and correct the other (and/or correct the parity block)?

PS. IF my process above is correct, it only affects one (movie) file that I don't care much about. I can just delete it and re-acquire it. But that's why I want to know if my validation steps are correct. If it turns out some important document is affected, I need to restore it from backup...

Hi Everyone,

I am evaluating Idrive using one of their free 10 gig accounts. I installed the Idrive program and set up a local folder with a bunch of files totalling 3 gig to test drive using Idrive in my day to day work.

2 weeks into what was smooth sailing I found out that my computer was suddenly uploading data constantly. Usual internet surfing slowed down considerbly.

I have limited expertise so can only tell that idwutil_600.exe is sending this data, and cannot tell what is being sent or where it is being sent. Killing this process stops the uploading. I monitor this with a generic bandwith meter for looking at upload and download speeds- my usual use has very small amounts of upload, and when I found out this uploading problem it will be max speed upload constantly while Idrive is run.

The uploaded amount of data (from the generic bandwith meter) shows an amount larger than the 3 gig local folder when left alone.

Aside from updating antimalware, I have not added any files to my test folder when this behaviour started.

I have not scheduled any backups, and several of the backup options are not available in the free version anyway. My test folder shows that every file is synced when the uploading occurs, and on the status window for Idrive program also displays files as synced, while I see the data being uploaded.

From a practical standpoint usual internet use has slowed down to a standstill in e.g. loading pages.

This goes back to normal when I kill the process idwutil_600.exe. It restarts when I restart the idrive program.

I have reinstalled Idrive and this behaviour continues.

As my account is a free one I submitted a help ticket but to be honest being a bit disappointed with most calls for help to vendors I am not sure if I will get anything aside from asking me to update windows, reinstall the program, check my firewall etc.

Has anyone seen this type of behaviour with their IDrive or cloud storage service? It would be a shame to discount/ replace a service and blame one on an issue that could be potentially fixed.

As an aside I use onedrive and have not had such issues. I tested sync (from sync.com) and also have not seen this problem several months into a trial.

Thank you!

So I recently got myself a personal dietician who is sending me all 3 meals every day that I want to eat on Whatsapp in different formats like images & text. I want to save all these in a proper format (preferably datewise) so that I can refer to them once my 6-month diet is over.

What will be the best way to store them? Should I create a document or how should I do it?

I'm looking to replace one of my external HDD (2TB) with an SSD (4TB), and there are two choices for me (technically there's Sandisk too but everybody recommended against it. My experience with it wasn't great.)

The choices are between MY PASSPORT SSD (WDBAGF0040BGY) and SAMSUNG T9 (MU-PG4T0B/WW)

Samsung is almost double the price to WD, but when it comes to NVME drive, people are praising Samsung.

Question is, how's their external SSD compared to WD?
