I recently purchased a Western Digital hard drive, specifically model WD10SPZX (WD Blue 2.5'' SATA 1 TB) through Amazon. I wasn't looking for anything special, just another drive to copy some data to, so SMR was just acceptable to me.

For obvious reasons, I checked the S.M.A.R.T. data to see if it was indeed a new disk. According to this data, it had only been on for 3 hours. I didn't think much of it, as I found that this may be normal for some manufacturers who perform quality tests on their disks.

However, I was not entirely convinced and decided to go further and used some tools to recover disk data. My surprise was huge when I found that the disk had at least two partitions with data: a first VFAT partition with what seems to be FreeDOS and another one with software that I haven't had time to check yet, but that seems to be related to Lenovo recovery partitions (still digging into this.)

These are the contents of the first partition:

$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sdc

Disk /dev/sdc: 931.51 GiB, 1000204886016 bytes, 1953525168 sectors

The disk was advertised as new and was sold directly by Western Digital in Europe (labeled as coming from Germany.)

Have you come across similar cases with Western Digital disks or other manufacturers?

I am still investigating the contents of the disk with forensic tools looking for more data. Am I being overly paranoid and this is content that may be there due to the quality testing they put the disks through?

Thanks in advance!

I'm new to data hoarding and i was wondering how i should store the checksums securely so it is protected against bad actors and also safely in case my backup drives get corrupted.

I want to first compress my data and then encrypt it.

Should i also keep checksums of the encrypted file or the compressed file?

I'm on linux but i wouldn't mind using windows programs in wine or in a vm but i would prefer to only use linux.

Mostly bc i would like to automate the process on linux. (but i could probably automate it on windows too if i have to use windows programs)

Btw i want to backup my data to ssd's hdd's and bluray discs.

Should i still use btrfs on something like inside an img file inside the encrypted file on bluray discs?

Since i see btrfs being recommended here.

Edit: I don't want to use zfs cause i want to easily implement multiple encryptions in layers like in veracrypt.

My seagate is making clicking (park) sound every 30-60 seconds when on idle, sometimes even when i open folders on it it park head, or some program running in background that is installed on HDD. I think this used to happen before but i didn't noticed because my fans were spinning harder.

I tried to make it sleep with APM controls in Crystaldisk, but it was spinning up randomly after few sec of sleep, so idea of it being silent and not clicking is not gonna work.

Is it safe to turn off apm so i dont hear head parking every minute or is it better to just leave it on and live with the constant head parking? Longevity > noise.

I currently have a 2018 Mac Pro with 1TB of storage, however it is my dads old computer and he has ~750GB taken up. I am looking at external drives for storage. I really have no idea if I should get a HDD or SSD. Probably looking at 2Tb or 4TB. Most of the stuff being stored would be, movies, large datasets, photos and textbooks. The photos and textbooks would not get read a lot. I don’t think I would be doing anything that requires editing straight on the drive. I would most likely copy to my computer and edit on there if I need to. There will be times where I probably won’t access it for a month at a time. I do have a 1TB ssd right now but that is filling up.

From the research I’ve done I have a few options, I would like to spend less than $100

Stand alone ssd - expensive for 2TB or more

HDD - I didn’t look that hard but seagate ones are ~60 for 2TB. Are there better options?

Internal SSD with a casing - is this the best option. Could get a used ssd and case, total seems like ~100

I really have no idea what to look for and what would be best.

If I do want to browse images and photos on a hdd drive, is it slow?

Organizing your data in a central (online) library is useful. Data nowadays is on hdd’s, memory cards, cloud services etc. Is there easy to use catalogue software to store the location of the data and the type of data in a nice graphical way? (Documents, plain text, music, movies, ebooks etc). It would be nice when you can catalogue it and it can save you a lot of valuable time searching. And I think it would be nice when this database is also accessible via mobile, tablet etc, not only desktop driven. I wonder if something like this exists.

Have a Dell R720 with 8x 3.5” 4TB drives. I’ve filled up my pool, and looking to expand. Do I buy another server with more storage / split my storage, get a disk shelf, or just swap out drives one at a time with a bigger cap drive and rebuild?

Heya! I'm a professional nerd a.k.a. scientist who works with confocal microscopy: a big ass microscope making some big ass images of stuff that's really tiny.

I have to transfer these images from the microscope to my PC. Could you recommend some USB sticks with 1TB capacity that are really fast and can conveniently be stored in my jeans pockets? (Need to be USB-A, the microscope doesn't have USB-C)

I've found some conflicting results on the interwebs, so was hoping you could help me out.

There's this video of a band I like and me and someone else have been trying to find, but the only progress made was finding the thumbnail. The video was archived on 2021, in which the video was already deleted (the earliest data i found was from september 2008 in a forum). I'm really determined to find it, heres the link of the archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20210216052702/https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=WsfyqkFxxuY Thank you to whoever contributes!

So I've had this dvd of Ice Age for a bit, I haven't really used it or anything but I recently tried to use it on my computer to watch it and nothing happened so I was like ok probably just a problem with the drive so I tried watching it on a regular old dvd player and this time the trailers played and the legal screens but then the screen went green. Then about 25 minutes later a scene from the movie played but was kind of distorted with the green and then it went to black. Other dvds work on this and my pcs drive(ASUS DRW-24B1ST j) and I've checked the disk for any scratches or noticeable smudges. The weird thing is on my pc it's not like the thing just won't play, it won't even show up on the drive and when I try to open the drive my file explorer crashes. VLC won't read it, PowerDVD won't read it, Handbrake, DVD Decrypter, MakeMKV and all the other recommended readers and rippers don't pick it up. I saw someone else post about the same disc I think 8 months ago and I tried the methods recommended there and they didn't work. I have really no idea what it could be encrypted with.

I need help with my Synology 918+ 4-bay NAS, and I hope the Reddit community can provide some guidance.

Over the years, I’ve been upgrading my NAS drives one by one for more space. As of April 2024, I had four WD white label NAS drives (shucked from Easystore shells). In April, Drive #2 (14TB) crashed. I powered down the system but didn’t have the funds for a replacement right away, so I waited. On Prime Day, I bought a 16TB Seagate Ironwolf Pro to replace the crashed drive.

I installed the new 16TB drive and did a quick rebuild to get it online fast since my storage volume only has 1-drive fault protection. The rebuild seemed successful, so I continued with my day. However, later that evening, the volume crashed again. This time, both the new Drive #2 (Seagate 16TB) and Drive #4 crashed. The volume became read-only, and I started backing up what I could until the copying process stopped altogether.

I’ve been searching for solutions online, but the information I’ve found is confusing and mostly addresses issues with just one crashed drive. Should I consider involving a data recovery service at this point? I’m cautious about making things worse. I have also opened a ticket with Synology.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Here are some of the sites I have found for the issue:

Noob here, I want to use a 2tb drive inside my PC to keep a copy of my entire system on it (I already have a small nas for data storage, this is not for that, but to have a copy of my system in case one of my internal drives fail).

My system would automatically back up every 30 minutes while it's in use, so I have an almost live copy at all times.

I'd like to use an ssd but it's double the price of an hdd, so what good reasons would I have in this situation to go for the ssd? Or is the hdd fine?

Noise wouldn't be an issue since I use my PC from another room. Speed shouldn't be an issue either, since I never have to use the data and other than the first full upload, it'll always be small transfers, right? Am I missing something?

I successfully copied a large website for offline use using wget. The WordPress site has a very large "wp-json" directory, and when I remove it the website still renders successfully offline. Is it safe to delete this directory entirely? I haven't been able to figure out if it's essential.

I'm looking into that upcoming N5 case from jonsbo. I think it uses the same backplate design as the N4. I have WD ultrastars from goharddrive that require one of those 3.3v adapters to power on. Are these (or taping the pins) still required with the Jonsbo cases?

Hello! I am looking to purchase a Samsung T7 Shield, with a capacity of 2TB. I am in Canada, and was looking at these 4 products (EDIT: sorry, made a typo in the title and said 2 models instead of 4) , all considered T7 Shield models:

  1. ‎MU-PE2T0S/AM - $ 389 Link: https://shorturl.at/FmaMe
  2. MU-PE2T0S/WW - $ 291 Link: https://shorturl.at/buAw4
  3. MU-PE2T0S/EU - $ 289 Link: https://shorturl.at/jts6t
  4. MU-PE2T0K/WW - $ 289 Link: https://shorturl.at/sY9iM

Per my research, even on the official Samsung website: https://semiconductor.samsung.com/consumer-storage/portable-ssd/t7-shield/

The model codes are all listed as being "T7 Shield 2TB": https://imgur.com/a/8PXTzgd

Can anyone help me understand what the difference is between these models, and why specifically the "AM" variant is almost $ 100 more expensive?

Thank you!

Hi everyone! Newbie here:

I am currently starting my first NAS server. I am running an old PC with TrueNas. Everything is setup, I have an SMB file sharing system and can access files alright through ethernet. My questions are:

  1. At the moment my PC is connected to my router through ethernet and I connect my PC through ethernet to the same router to access the files and server. Is this the correct procedure?
  2. Does this leave me vulnerable to internet attacks or malware? Is my server technically connected to the internet or is it local?
  3. Would the system work/work better if I connect my PC directly to a Gigabit Switch and my pc to the Switch?
  4. Does my wifi speed matter when transfering the files through ethernet? For example, am I transferring at the speed of the cable rating and HDD read/write (~200mb/s w/CAT7) or at the speed of my wifi (50Mb/s)?

Any recommendation in setup is appreciated. Thanks in advance to everyone.

  • it can be any form factor but I prefer m.2
  • dont mind if its using SATA protocol instead of nvme PCIe
  • 1000 TBW write endurance or higher
  • with DRAM cache
  • least expensive

Ive been using gallery-dl long enough as the cli version, and been playing around with web development a bit recently. Thought it could be nice to have a bit of a command builder and then a list of all the task you would want to run. Its working as of now but still some kinks to iron out so not ready to abandon my batch files just yet but wanted to share.

I didn't find a better place to ask, and since Uranium seems to be quite used here... well, a simple question: every time the backup starts, the little "notification" pop-up on the lower right corner of the screen becomes the foreground window, and if I was using a fullscreen application Uranium switches it to windowed.

Is there a way to avoid that and keep Uranium in the back?

It's particularly annoying because each time it does that repeatedly, since there are multiple separate backups from different disks starting one after the other.

I've used a Synology NAS for a few years now. But I am finding that I don't use the network abilities of it very much and am getting tired of the high annual costs of a cloud backup. I'm considering if there is a way to convert it from being a standalone NAS to being a computer connected hard drive. I could then use something like Backblaze for much cheaper backups. Is this even possible? Could I do it without wiping the drives? I've tried to research it, but am struggling to wrap my head around it. Thanks.

Oh, and I have a DS1821+

Hello all, I planned on running RAID 5 or 6 on a windows Plex environment, but the truth is setting in that this is an idea that will not help in the slightest to make sure my data is okay. I have looked up ways to run UNRAID in windows 11 Pro VM, but it just doesn’t seem like it will work. I want some sort of soft storage security without having to have an equal backup of every drive, but I’m unsure what to do. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you! :)
