I see lots of people talk about RMA'ing drives but I would never do that with an unencrypted drive which may have held personal/sensitive data. So, from that standpoint, encryption makes sense.

I will be replacing my drives soon and wondering if I should encrypt the drives. I plan to use Win11 + snapRAID + Drivepool and probably NTFS + Bitlocker encryption. Would encryption reduce the likelihood of salvaging data on a failing drive? I suppose I'm wondering if the Bitlocker encryption depends on the drive in any way other than for reading the data (which is then decrypted by the OS).

I tried doing a conversion using vlc and also tried ripping it using makemkv with no luck. Somebody recommended me to use hanbrake but I'm not sure how it works and have also read that if I rip through there the quality will not be as good. Any recommendations for the best way to go about doing this are appreciated. Willing to pay for a software if necessary and not too expensive

Hey ive been wanting to save these sites here https://porterrobinson.com/ and https://virtualself.co/ so that they are completely duplicated to my computer and are able to be run locally for archival purposes.

Ive tried using SingleFileZ to rip these with all their assets but It never works. Does anyone know a method for saving these types of sites?

Hello,

Looking for some advice from seasoned experts.

Here is setup:

  • 2023 MacOs M2 Mac Mini (Please forgive me)
  • Orico 5-Bay Hard Drive Docking 6558US3-C
  • Drive 1 - Seagate Iron Wolf 8TB ST8000VNZ04 - 2 Months in use - no issues until today
  • *New* - Drive 2 - Seagate Barracuda 8TB ST8000DMZ04 - 24 Hours in possession

After moving data from Drive 1 to Drive 2 (took 12 hours) and having no issues, I moved a small file and then checked on it 5 mins later, both drives had disconnected.

Same thing happened again this afternoon and evening, both after logging in from sleep. Never had had an issue with drive disconnecting until second drive was attached.

Upon suggestion from another thread, downloaded DriveDX. Has health of second drive as Poor, but short test returned no warnings. Seek Error Rate at 35%. Power Cycle 3 Times in 24 Hours

Health of First Drive is great. Power Cycle 6 times in 2 months (believe 3 of those are from Drive 2, but may be misreading this)

Currently moving data back to Drive 1 and then will return Drive.

Questions:

  1. Could this be an Orico Bay issue, now that two drives are attached. Could they each be getting asked for data and are disconnecting?
  2. Could this be a MacOs issue driven by going to sleep? Would be odd as has not happened for last 2 months. I did set setting (today) to not turn hard drives off when sleeping, but again not sure why it would suddenly be an issue and haven't had an issue since, but haven't let it go to sleep.
  3. Is this just a poor drive?

It's a 12TB Seagate Ironwolf from 2021, warranty expired in April 2024. Cosmetically it's fine apart from a few bronze coloured spots on it which just kinda look like a liquid splashed on it and dried up. I got it from Cex in the UK and they're hit and miss with testing, but great with returns, so I have confidence in buying from them.

Anyway, put it in my Synology DS120J and it has 0 hours on it. Ran a quick SMART test and it came back fine, waited for the Ironwolf test to become available which is also fine. I transferred 5TB to it with no issues and now running the extended SMART test which will take 18+ hours.

So far everything seems fine but seems really odd that you'd erase SMART data for a secondhand drive? I could understand someone trying to fool an eBay buyer, but odd that you'd do it for Cex of all places because everything at Cex is secondhand and everyone who buys there knows they're not getting the best condition items.

Cex has a 2 year warranty anyway and I'm not expecting to use this for more than a year so I'm not that bothered, just wondering if I should be concerned.

I run in my homelab a storage server based on windows server 2022, leveraging windows storage spaces.

Currently I'm running 10 disks in a main pool with mixed resiliency levels for volumes, of course dual-parity volumes for the more critical. Now my question is, my rack case has 24 disk bays, planning future expansions what is the safe limit in number of disk for a RAID6 (dual-parity) pool?

should I go with 2 different storage pools made of 12 disks each or one large one on all 24drives?

searching online I didn't find any guideline specific for WSS

Just bought one for all my lovely data. Though everytime it is plugged into my computer, i can feel the heat coming from it, even when its not exactly in use, just connected. Will it shorten its lifespan? Should I connect it only when i write on it/read from it? Its a kioxia 128gb one.

Thanks for your opinions?

So I made a mistake. I bought Seagate Exos X20 20TB drives. Two to be exact, they work great but cost quite a bit more than the 18TB X20's. Currently I have my main NAS setup with two of these and two backup NAS' that only backup my important data. I currently do not backup my media. I currently run TrueNAS with the two in a mirror.

The plan is to expand my main NAS storage as well as expand my backup NAS' to be able to store my media as well. The issue I run into is because I bought the 20TB drives, when I expand the storage with another mirror pair, no matter what I do my spare will always need to be another 20TB. I realize if I expand with two 18TB drives, those technically could be replaced with a 18TB drive if one failed. But I don't know which drive would be the first to have issues. Let alone it could be a long time before it even happens.

So while this sounds like a dumb idea on paper, it could lead to money savings, but my thought was to rebuild the main NAS after I get the two backups fully set up. Instead of having the 20TB in a mirror pair, I would get two X20 18TB drives and pair one 18TB per one 20TB. I would lose the extra little bit from the 20TB but be able to reduce the cost of future drive purchases. At least they could still be X20's and be fairly identical aside from the size.

Thoughts? I know in the long run it isn't super pricey but I hate knowing, (at least currently) that my spare always has to be a $300 drive. I could get two refurbished 18TB drives for the price of one 20TB. While I am planning on spending a chunk of change on expansion, I do still have limitations.

My failure was buying the 20TB drives on a super deal brand new for $220, not realizing they normally were a lot more.

New here, and looking for input on upgrading from consumer-level DAS drives to enterprise-level drives and enclosures after losing data when a Seagate consumer drive failed.

I have about 25TB of data, always growing (enthusiast photography, large Photoshop files, giant music library, home videos, legal work documents) in an environment of two Mac computers and about a dozen desktop external drives, mostly 8TB Seagate Backup Plus Hubs drives (some for redundant backups) (plus a few small portable drives that go in a safe deposit box). I use SuperDuper! to run regular backups.

Looking at enterprise-level drives for the first time for their reliability and 5-year warranty (Seagate consumer drives in U.S. have only 1-year warranties!)

Thinking of getting several Seagate Exos X18 14TB drives in sets of 3 (working drive and two backups; backups don’t need to be up and running all the time). (Also considering Ironwolf Pro.) Plus a Sabrent docking station of some sort or perhaps individual plug-in enclosures. Will also add cloud storage like Backblaze or similar.

Does this make sense for my needs? Are Exos drives too noisy for a home and/or studio environment? Open to any suggestions.

Thanks in advance for helping!

Hello everyone I hate to bother anyone but I am really out of my element here and could use some tips to see if I am headed in the right direction.

For some context I was gifted 5x10TB drives and was so happy and excited to create a media server box for my house until I saw that they were 12gbs SAS and seem to require more work and know-how to set up.

So far, from what I was able to look up both on this sub and elsewhere, all I would need is a junker PC with enough space to fit 5 drives and a SAS compatible HBA card.

I have three questions:

  1. Is it true that all the hardware I need is a pc that can fit an hba card (and the card itself) to utilize SAS on a desktop PC?
  2. What is the cheapest viable HBA card for my build? I was looking at this LSI clone https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BY8TF8YJ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A1XC5IBX3KGXP5&psc=1 but I suspect I should pay extra for something that's better. (note: I know this one says 6gb but I don't care that much if it bottlenecks. As long as it is compatible with my drives 6gb/s is enough for my purposes)
  3. Is there a cheaper/simpler way to make an enclosure for 5 SAS drives? (minimal size also preferred)

I've recently learned the "Date" column in a Windows Explorer folder is a calculated field dependent on the type of file that is in a given directory. This is outlined in this article:

https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20230921-00/?p=108808

I'd like to understand how I can export a listing of the files and their respective "Date" data to an exportable file (preferably Excel, but if not, TXT is fine). To be clear, it's not the "Date created" or "Date modified" columns, I'm looking for the "Date" column. The exported file should have two columns; one column that lists the files and another column that lists the files' respective "Date" data. It's a calculated field, so I don't even know if the Date column is considered a piece of metadata or extended file attribute. There MUST be a way to get this output to a file because Windows shows it.

Forgive my lack of experience, but if PowerShell is the way to get it, can you provide the code/instructions on exactly how to do it and how I can modify it for any given folder and any given column (like "Media Created Date" column), that would be much appreciated!! If there's a program to get this, that would be awesome too!

SOLVED: looking at other media from QNAP, the RAIL-B02 also is compatible and are fairly available.

I just picked up a QNAP TS-431XeU-2G-US rack mount NAS quickly since I'm having a bit of an emergency. However now that I got it I don't know how I'm supposed to mount it in my rack.

The ears it comes with only have one cent post hole instead of two per side for my rack studs. It looks like it has some sort of easy mount for rails but the ones linked on the QNAP site don't seem to exist anymore.

Does anyone know how I'm supposed to rack mount this? So far it seems like a nice NAS other than this issue.

I'm into buying additional HDD for my desktop. As I work with audio I'm not really into clickety enterprise/7200 stuff and if I'm going to spend more than 15$/TB on CRM drive I'll rather save for few smaller solid state drives at this point. From time to time I see people selling WD drives (mostly purple) packed in antistatic bags advertised as new. Only way to check them before buying are serial numbers, but when I type those in, regardless of production date, they can only be found as sold in Thailand where they are made and in Out of Region status. Is it possible WD is trying to push refurbished drives without labeling them as such?

I have an ever growing "trashfolder" of images and all the images in there are not named in a meaningful way. For the most part its memes, artworks or basically any nice picture that i stumbled upon. Over the years it has become almost impossible to find specific pictures and you end up scrolling through the folder for 10 minutes. Now and i was wondering:

Stable Diffusion afaik is able to do img2text. It would output a text promt in the style of an text2img input prompt. You could basically do a img2text run on all your pictures, and save the filenames with the corresponding textprompts in a csv file. Then your search only becomes a matter of parsing that file.

I think its not that hard to hack something like this together, but maybe someone already did the work. Anyone knows if a software like that exists?

It would be even better if some AI model existed which could actually extract text from an image and make the image searchable by that text. So for example if you would search for "billions must die" you would get all images containing the text "billions must die"

Does something like this exist?

I have various Linux distros i want to play on my nVidia shield pro in addition to my .flac piano recordings that are all accessible locally over my intranet.

Currently I am plugging in a USB 3.0 16tb external drive to my nVidia pro to do this. The problem is as soon as the power from the nVidia is off it places the external drive in a weird state. I have to unplug the drive and reconnect it every time I want to play something if it’s been sitting a while.

I have a rack mounted UniFi setup and I’m looking at getting a Synology RS422+

Is this going to do what I want it to?

I just got a Pioneer BDR-209DBK Blue Ray drive gifted from a neighbor. I'm new to data hoarding. I want to digitalize my private movie BD collection and store them in 4K on my home NAS.

I've heard the biggest problem with Blue Ray drives is the firmware blocking people from ripping movies.

Does this affect my drive? What would I've to do to be able to digitalize my movies?

Hey guys,

I’m looking for a way to automatically download and save new content (like media files) from a Public Telegram channel because I'm pretty tired of saving the new content manually a few times a day. I know that Telegram automatically downloads the content but it does not save them and they are not accessible files. I'm using a Wİndows 10 PC.

I’d really appreciate your help!

Thanks!

I want to sync a directory on my GCP VM instance, which I access via SSH, with my local machine.

Here’s the catch: the directory contains multiple projects, each with its own virtual environment ("venv"). I do not want to sync these virtual environments to my local machine. I only want to download/revise any other files/directories I change on the VM.

My samsung t7 1tb stopped getting detected , tried everything i could find on youtube but i saw a few users here saying they use free disk scanning/partitioning software to restore ssds which randomly stop working. Was wondering if anyone can drop names and give hints on how do i go about doing the same thing to get my data back?
