I have come across these 2 choices for purchasing a hdd for daily use that can be later added to a NAS setup.

I am a bit unsure regarding the exos since its 6 tb for the same price as 4 tb ironwolf. Links below:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09FH7D83W/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=A10XTVRAJRWPGO&th=1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09NHV3CK9/ref=ewc_pr_img_3?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1

Which would be the safest choice?

I bought a film negative scanner for about $100. I’m pretty happy with it except in one area: for some, but not all of my negatives, the scanner crops a hit from the top and bottom of the image.

If I hold the negatives up to the light, I can see that for the cropped negatives, the image on the negative strip itself is slightly larger than the images on the “non cropped” negatives, even though both negatives have the same width.

I don’t know anything about the specific type of negatives/film I’m working with, or even where I would look if that info is somehow printed on the negatives in tiny print or whatever.

I’m assuming that this economical scanner perhaps isn’t as capable as a pricey scanner that would capture the whole image on my “cropped negatives”, but I don’t know what design feature I should be looking for if I get another scanner so I can avoid this problem, as opposed to just ordering several and trying them til I find one that seems to work ok.

Does anyone have advice on what I should be looking for, or specific scanners to recommend, or if at my $100 price point, this is the best I can hope for. So far I am fully satisfied with everything except the cropping issue. Thanks!

Hello all,

I bought two 4tb SATA Red SSDs in April of 2024. One failed withing 12 days. I naturally started an RMA. These are $400 CAD at the time so not exactly throw away. I waited weeks. Nothing.

Followed up. Out of stock (despite being able to order new online). Okay... Offered to replace with red 4th NVME. I asked for them to provide the sata adapter since my servers are sas/sata. Nope. So now I could pay for an adaptor after already paying for the drives AND the shipping costs for the RMA after 12 days of ownership... Gaaahhh.. no no thanks. Ship me the correct SATA drive.

Well. It's August. Still nothing. No input no response just "very sorry, we are investigating" over and over..

Wtf else can I do?! It's been four months!..

Would it be possible to create a legally Gray, peer to peer sharing network for Internet archive data? Similar to how Torrents are seeded?

I’ve been to the archive and they have the tools to digitize old media, but the storage itself and the legal issues surrounding the content could spell the end of the IA.

How can we prevent IA being lost?

Like how is this setup even legal? Like most returns it seems like the only real handling they get is put them right back into a box and see if the next customer complains the same.... The "recertified" sticker is a total joke. You can probably guess I had a bad experience with a drive recently, luckily I was already cautious and didn't put anything on it that I didn't have stored elsewhere... But it was always a little strange noise-wise but after a week I checked the data and found many files showing 0kb. I would be partly tempted to blame MacOS since I move this drive between Windows and Mac, and sometimes Mac refuses to read it at which point Windows will report "the drive has errors, click here to fix them", which I'm also not sure is not contributing to the data loss also. This drive cost around 75% of the 'new' cost and the only other time I've bought a refurbished drive I paid literally only 40% the new cost and wasn't surprised when that one died after a month. For certain I will never buy a refurbished drive again unless they're both super cheap (>50% off) and I can test them thoroughly beforehand. 🙄

I have a bunch of 4tb external drives, every one almost full, encrypted with bitlocker. Since I'm switching to linux and bitlocker support is poor, I want unencrypt the bitlocker drives then encrypt it again using veracrypt.

Is there any safe way to do this without the risk of loosing files on the process?

Not to dangle a mutton slab above a pack of velociraptors but imagine if you had one of these Gigabyte S183s, 1U high with 32 E1.S drive bays, and you had a whole rack you could fill with them, what would you do? https://www.gigabyte.com/Enterprise/Rack-Server/S183-SH0-AAV1?lan=en

What should I do.

New to 321 (don’t shame me)…

  • iPhone 11 64gb, MB Air 2022 M2 245gb, & 200gb iCloud plan all almost full.
  • iCloud plan says 152gb of photos/vids in there. Mac Photos library says 75gb. iPhone storage says 11gb.

I do not care to have all my photos/vids on my iphone and MacBook, at hand all the time…

I recently got 2 external SSDs.

I also have 1TB Onedrive as I have Microsoft office (but I only just today started uploading photos to it). I know I need to clean up some shit. And maybe i don’t understand iCloud fully but onedrive seems more what I prefer.

It’s photos that take up my storage in iCloud/devices, plus WhatsApp/iMessage, & Applications (less of the long term issue for me though).

hello! i'm very new to all of this and want to be able to store my photos and videos and move away from icloud. i'm looking to get a 2TB SSD but not sure if a specific brand matters? i didn't know that i would need to move my photos to a new device often, is that common?

i did do some initial searching here but i'm really new to storage and got a little overwhelmed :(

I'm considering building my own NAS. On one hand I'll be using it to store movies, photos and miscellaneous files and on the other hand as a plex server on my local network and probably to build one or two virtual machines (home assistant for example).

Anyway, what's the difference between a standard HDD and a NAS specific drive of the same brand? Do I really have to pay an extra cost for specific NAS drives? I don't really understand why standard drives couldn't be used...

I'll probably start with 6 HDD of 2TB or 4 HDD of 4TB, what type of RAID should I use? As I'll need at least 7-8TB of space, probably a RAID5 or 6 should be good. What do you think?

Thanks

I have been ripping my blu-ray collection recently, in the collection i had The Walking Dead and Supernatural, I ripped the entire series of both and the file size was at the time 2tb ish for both, Now I checked again today and the file size appears to be 1.80tb and 1.83tb for BOTH the entirity of the shows.

Now i have heard of Drives rapidly growing in size for no reason but i have never heard of files suddenly giving you space back, I have done nothing with the files other than when i Initially renamed them and checking the folders and how many individual files it still has every single episode so what gives?
