I'm watching this video here on a NAS computer:

https://youtu.be/pvsg86HGcbQ?si=gBALZnEx66UhFQIx&t=5m2s

He says that only having one NVMe socket "really hurts its ability to operated as an UnRAID machine, for example, because you can't make a mirrored cache pool... running a system like this can lead to data loss having only one drive."

I've never used a NAS before and I don't quite understand this.

  • How does losing a cache lead to data loss? The permanent data is still on the two SATA HDDs in RAID 1. Cache is temporary?
  • Why is having a mirrored cache so important?
  • Besides in UnRAID, what other problems can result from having only one NVMe drive?

So in my upgrade plans over the next year, I intend to drop in an LSI HBA 9600 24i to operate the internal drives of a Rosewill ‎RSV-L4412 and link it to a Netapp disk shelf. I figured the 9600 24i since it's PCIE 4 and also only around CAD$300 on eBay. (Some internal connectors will be adapted to external via a bracket)

But I was thinking, since the 9600 24i also supports NVME and the various Rosewill cases mostly all have 5.25" bays in the front just with hot swap cages mounted there. Then you could remove those cages and drop in off the shelf standard U.2/U.3 cages and voila, you have an NVME capable server? I'm just musing this because it seems I'm 'accidently' walking into a fairly future proof upgrade path?

My requirements are simple and outlined here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/1ela72q/comment/lgshimk/?context=3

So here's what I'm thinking:

$250 - Aoostar R1 N100, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD

$150 x 2 16TB Recertified Drives from ServerPartDeals

$550 total for a 16TB RAID 1 NAS.

Anything I'm missing? Which of these drives would be best (I know they're all slow).

Toshiba MD08 MD08ACA16TR 16TB

Seagate Exos X18 ST16000NM000J 16TB

Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC550 WUH721816ALE6L0 0F38460 16TB

I just bought and old riverbed steelhead 5050L, it opteron cpu not sure which but it has 16 hotswappble 3.5 inch bays now the backplane has this weird air max connector definitely not sas havent really found an alternative now there are three options i can do ( currently using unraid)

Option 1: use it for just a network share and use all my services on my other server

Option 2: remove the backplane, psu and add a sas expander for and use it as a jbod

Option 3: or is there a compatible way to get a backplane on it so that its still hot swappable

Note: got it for 60 bucks worth it for the case alone

I know that the best video downloaders are yt-dlp and 4K Video Downloader. That's what I previously used. However, something happened to my computer and I'm now unable to use either of them. Can someone recommend a reliable web-based video downloader?

Anyone know if im using a data set that is raid5 das enclosure on usb.. and i add a 1tb nvme drive on the main machine, if im to create a storage spaces tiered setup, where it utilizes the existing data + nvme for speed on new writes, if that means the existing raid5 data must be wiped before creating?

Also, would this tiered + storage config be accessible by one single drive letter after being configured (seemless)?

havent used storage spaces yet, so a little bit of a newb on this one

EDIT: so it sounds like storage spaces might be too unreliable, however, i've yet to find a solution that can tier an NVME with another set of 7200 rpm drives and protect the data and gain native nvme speed for fresh writes.

Howdy! Im a photographer, and I take a lot of photos, and I'd like to be able to store them for extremely long periods of time. I would be perfectly fine with a cloud based solution, or just getting a bunch of HDDs together and making a file server, but I'm incredibly concerned about my photos being used to train AI, especially with companies like Microsoft adding in clauses in their TOS that basically say that they can use whatever you have to throw into an algorithm as training data.

As such I don't feel comfortable with using something that can be subject to changing TOS to store my art, so I'm willing to invest in something that will be completely secure.

I want to have a computer that has no networking capabilities whatsoever running Linux attached to an LTO drive.

I want to plug my SD card into the machine, have it dump everythg to the tape, and then wipe my SD card.

I want zero data compression, which is why I want LTO instead of HDD. I created about 3tb of raw data per year with my photos, so it ends up being really expensive to use HDD drives.

How hard would this be to do? And/or what software do I need? I'd love any sort of advice you can give me.

Hi I jusy wanted to ask where do you get all your drives from? Any good shops or ebay or any else? I'm based in Poland (YUROP - EU if yer nae from EaStErN block) and I'm wondering where could I get my drives cheaper.

EDIT (after your comments i am adding bit more context to my question since im no longer on a bus xD):

ive recently found this shop on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/204564598293 but thats all refubrished/recertified or whatever they call them - so the risk is that it wont be running so good and not long, limited warranty, its based in china - so probaly tax will come up to their price. and most of them are seagate - a brand i dont trust so i am looking fo cheap alternatives now.

E2: im mostly looking for big drives 20TB+ cause my number of bays are quite limited and i dont want to get another box of drives standing outside my laptop xD

Hi guys,

For a while now I've been looking to buy a DAS enclosure to backup my data (photos, movies, documents, etc.). So it would be powered on only a few hours a month. There is a lot of trash-looking cheap stuff available to buy, making it hard for me to find a good one. I read many bad reviews (about specific DAS devices and DAS in general) and only a few positive ones.

I've come across the TerraMaster D5-300C. Only a very few reviews but they are quite positive, so I'd like to hear what you think about it. I don't really care about its RAID capabilities (hence the 300C model) since I'll be using a software RAID-5. My fears are: reliability over time, speed (150+ MB/s is good for me) and heat dissipation (I've read a lot that those kind of enclosures are quite bad at it, often requiring to replace the fan by a better one).

Thank you!

From what I've read, this thing only supports a single cable? No way to get the full 48Gbps bandwidth?

I’m a photographer that has a few hard drives that I use, an SSD and a couple of HDDs. They’re all formatted ExFat and I sometimes swap between my MacBook laptop and Windows laptop. Primarily I use my MacBook. I keep having issues with BackBlaze Personal Backup not backing up my HDDs and now I can’t seem to get them to backup on my MacBook, almost been 30 days. They work fine on my windows. They show up without any issues on both computers. I’m kind of tired of getting nowhere with BackBlaze customer service. Anyone recommend a more reliable backup or even cloud service where I don’t have to worry about telling it to backup and it actually automatically does so without me having to constantly worry?

Are files stored in zip more/less prone to get bit rot?

Bit rot is the slow deterioration in the performance and integrity of data stored on storage media. It is also known by the names bit decay, data rot, data decay and silent corruption. When bit rot occurs, it causes the corruption of data, which can adversely affect its accessibility or usefulness.

Hi,

I've been using Robocopy to clone a Source folder on one device to a Destination on another using /mir for a while now, and I was wondering if it was possible to move any Extra files as opposed to deleting them.

Specifically, I'm imagining using two commands: One to first scan the two folders, identify any Extra files in the log and list them, without altering any of the files.

Second, my usual string, which would clone my Source to my Destination.

My question is: is it possible to write a Robocopy command that will check for Extra files that exist in the Destination folder but aren't in the Source folder, and move just those files to another folder elsewhere on the computer, effectively backing them up so when I run the second command those files will still exist on the PC, just not where they originally were?

Thank you

I want to replace my 5yr old 2TB HDD that I use inside my PC. I also want to increase its size to avoid using external drives. I was thinking something along the lines of 14 to 16TB SATA drives

Most I see in that range are enterprise drives, and I'm not entirely sure what is the exact difference between them and normal consumer drives.

I've read some posts saying that they tend to be louder and hotter than normal drives, others saying that they have weird sleep routines so they accumulate hours of use quite quickly.

Are these true? is there a good quality drive I could use inside my PC?

And of course I need s SATA connection since I don't have any way to connect a SAS drive.

I am gonna create a backup to my backup's backup and I am doing it with an older PC with a bunch of 8TB drives in it.

What's the easiest free NAS solution that allows for simple iSCSI connection to a LUN?

OMV? TruNAS? XigmaNAS? SnapRAID? EasyNAS? Other?
