I want to pull data from some really old IDE hard drives and CDs and save them onto new 18TB SATA drives.

Many of these SATA / IDE to USB 3.0 adapters say they have a max supported drive size of 12TB, 16TB, etc. but not 18TB.

Is there a physical reason why an adapter spec'd at 12TB max wouldn't be able to function with an 18TB drive?

I'm trying to figure out if this limit is due to some real reason or if the item description is just out of date (ie. they made the item description for this adapter when 18TB drives didn't even exist).

Hi everyone,

I'm in the market for a 2TB external hard drive primarily to store my photos. I constantly run into storage issues across my devices, so I’m looking for something that’s reliable and will last a long time, almost a lifetime. This drive will be used as my main backup for photos, so durability and reliability are key.

I’d also love to have the option to transfer photos directly from my phone (Android) if possible. If anyone has recommendations for something that ticks these boxes, I’d really appreciate your advice!

Thanks in advance!

I want to archive to 100GB M-Disk media, but am unsure which BluRay drive to purchase? I have a laptop, so looking to source a USB BluRay drive.

Not sure if this reddit covers M-Disk? Any suggestions appreciated.

I’m looking for a 4(or more) bay DAS that hooks up via usb-c gen 2 / 10gbps (or I guess 20/40 as I do have usb4 on my setup). I see a lot of older 5gbps boxes from Terramaster and others.

Any recommendations?

I want to be able to access the files too on the eternal hard drive on windows. Will the copy to USB function allow for this ?

Shucking them from Costco was my prior source, but they seem to only carry SSDs now (at least online) and I prefer HDDs the lifespan, unless SSDs have improved on that.

I'm fine with it being internal or external, though I prefer external bc it makes migrations easier- I mostly use SMB on Windows to make "NAS"es that I remote access over Tailscale.

I was hoping there was some pipeline of corporate refurbs like there are with Thinkpads, but I'm not seeing any

I have some basic knowledge but am curious to learn more about deciding when it’s time to replace drives. 1/ What are the most important parameters you consider in assessing general drive health and 2/ which software, outside of windows diagnostics, would you recommend, if any? My setup is a windows workstation with 4 Seagate 5 TB portable drives, each filled around 80%. Off-site backups of the same type. Not planning to move to a NAS-environment. Thanks!

I'm in an area where electricity is expensive, but I want a bulk storage option. SD cards use less power then a HDD, so I figured I'd use those but I'm not sure about the bulk price to proformance... this would be used for music, shows, and light games. So while speed is nice it's not a absolute top priority

Im seeing theres 2 different sku's for the same type of drive.

Does anyone know whats the difference?

Im thinking 201 refers to 2021 and 202 is for 2022? I could be wrong...

Hi all, this is just a call out to see if anyone has managed to mirror and use the AcoustId database from https://acoustid.org/

I know that the database is dumped here https://data.acoustid.org/ but I've not managed to really "do" anything with that as there are no clear instructions.

I've seen their blog post here but I'm pretty sure that's a Music Brainz mirror that it sets up, and there are many of those.

It's such a huge source of music fingerprints it would be tragic if it went away, however having the data is only half the battle.

Hi all! Its been a while since upgraded my storage so I would like to ask how to do it correctly in 2024. I will use SSD for OS/soft and this HDD (WD red plus) will be mainly foe media. So the questions are:

Is there any reason to partition it? Should I format it? If yes, is NTFS still the best choice? Maybe there is something else I need to do before using it?

Apologize for the request but I’m lost despite reading all the threads. I have a four bay NAS and want to add 2 drives. This is already quite a budget…. like 2x12TB means $400. I have already 2x8TB. Then should I backup all of this to say 20 TB therefore do I need to buy additional drives (I assume 2x10 TB) using a DAS but which software should I use to mount as a raid ? I’m quite lost on backup technology and cost. Thanks.

Hey guys. I recently moved from MacOS to Windows and looking for software to replace Carbon Copy Cloner. I have pretty basic set up - I keep my photos on my laptop and I have two external HDs that I use as a back up (main one and a back up of a back up if you will). I had CCC set up that if I plugged both drives, it was comparing the data on both to make sure they are the same and if there were any changes it was dealing with it automatically. Is there any program on Windows that would work in the same fashion? Price is irrelevant as long as its not a subscription based.

Thank you.

I got shipped a WD Gold 8TB from half way around the world from amazon(not my idea) and its not starting up. Not even spinning. I read something about the 3.3v pin thing and am gonna try that fix but was wondering what are the odds that the drive just fucking died in shipping.

Got a bunch of unbranded Chinese manufacturered SD cards for free and want to use them as backups. I don’t care what sizes or speeds they truly are but want to know for sure that windows is reporting the correct sizes. Most are 64 gb micro sdxc cards. Person I got them from ordered them from Temu for way cheaper than a regular 64 gig card should cost so I am proceeding with caution.

My only idea is dumping a load of files to fill up them up to their stated sizes and see what gets lost. But that sounds like it’s more of a hassle (and less reliable) than getting a third party software to verify since that’s kinda what they do anyways but more in-depth.

I’m not worried about their reliability since I have so many and going to put the same files on all that 10 would have to fail before I would need to worry.

Any recommendations for either ways to verify or software to check the sizes?

A symantec ftp server mirrored pre 2006-2007 which should have all the patches and updates to most symantec software from the early 90s onwards. The only mirror I can find is on the Internet Archive archived in 2014 but all the software updates and patches are long gone leaving only the directories. Trying to find any files from this ftp server that weren't already picked up by the Internet Archive itself or magazine disks or cds is impossible. If this is the wrong place to post I'll post in r/DHExchange.

Hello,

I am planning to purchase 4TB+ storage device to be used alongside my laptop. Primary usecase is Media storage (Photos+Movies). Won't be going for a NAS solution as of now.

Possibilities:

  1. External HDD 2.5" - Seagate OneTouch was on my mind, but regarding SMR issues I am on the edge.
  2. External HDD 3.5" or Internal with enclosure - Just wanted to know from a laptop user, how much it hampers the portability? This is my only concern.
  3. Internal SSD - Have an extra slot, PCIe3. But a 4TB drive in my country costs 1.5x the price of 8TB 3.5 HDD.

Help me guys!!

i currently have been using xethub to store and preserve assets/data from a abandoned game. my team and i are preserving/restoring said game.

however, xethub is now going away so... is there anything on this godforsaken planet that will let me store a public repo 2-3TB of data for free? if not, should i spend my entire life savings for a hosting server?

github has too many limitations and it isn't so easy to git upload a massive amount of data.

my repo is currently at 160GB. https://xethub.com/pebxcvi/PSHomeCacheDepot.

Hi.

I don't have a NAS or anything like that, just a computer.

I have ended up with a new computer, that only have one 3.5" inch bay, so I need a big drive to put in that one slot. The bigger the better, as long as the price per TB makes sense.

I will only read from it and write to it on occasion, so I would like it to be as quiet as possible, when it's not beeing accessed.

I mostly read about the Seagate exos disks, is this the way to go or are there better options out there?

Hi!

I've been trying to download images from a website in full resolution, and the method I have found works for SOME of the URLs but not all, and I am struggling to figure out why, I guess it's something regarding encryption, but I'm not sure. The parts in bold are the key differences between the working and non-working URLs.

Site with example links:

https://heartbreakmanagement.com/curve/maria-k-66468

Here's a link where simplifying works:

https://bucket-prod-01.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/content/cfc8c15223fb5c0b1132a49fa31fecf6/talent/image/06f449d4fbcbff3c235d6dafc970b2b2**/4/5/**4592741-big.jpeg?X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Credential=AKIAY55CGH2VECWAZGTW%2F20240805%2Feu-west-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20240805T222257Z&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&X-Amz-Expires=259200&X-Amz-Signature=38d58544e4de38476118b80922dee7069b7fb0b867838bf031fba6bd4b59464a

You can simplify this link by removing the encryption part of it.

https://bucket-prod-01.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/content/cfc8c15223fb5c0b1132a49fa31fecf6/talent/image/06f449d4fbcbff3c235d6dafc970b2b2/4/5/4592741-big.jpeg

Further, you can change the file name from "big" to "original" in order to get the full sized image.

https://bucket-prod-01.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/content/cfc8c15223fb5c0b1132a49fa31fecf6/talent/image/06f449d4fbcbff3c235d6dafc970b2b2/4/5/4592741-original.jpeg

Here's a link where simplifying doesn't work:

For URLs with the variation /5/3/ and above the method used above doesn't work. I get an access denied error once I remove the encryption.

https://bucket-prod-01.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/content/cfc8c15223fb5c0b1132a49fa31fecf6/talent/image/06f449d4fbcbff3c235d6dafc970b2b2**/5/7/**5713802-big.jpeg?X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Credential=AKIAY55CGH2VECWAZGTW%2F20240805%2Feu-west-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20240805T222257Z&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&X-Amz-Expires=259200&X-Amz-Signature=9270a5fbb3ab98ef26899c3154305ddb4254fd9a1875e5343d9418e984793e13

Non working simplified link:

https://bucket-prod-01.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/content/cfc8c15223fb5c0b1132a49fa31fecf6/talent/image/06f449d4fbcbff3c235d6dafc970b2b2/5/7/5713802-big.jpeg

Does anybody know a method on how to work around this?

Thanks in advance!

So.. I hoard for years, it occurs.. For decades I did it with CDs, DVDs and tapes (music, came that way and I still prefer cassette player over other ways).. My first storage drive was 1Tb and has like 7 years next one was purchased year ago (16Tb) and recently bought duplicate for that bigger (which now I see as kinda bad decision, because I could have same size storage much cheaper, but in multiple drives 🤣).. Anyway, thing is.. Despite cleaning and sorting stuff, I barely ever touch it.. Tho, most of stuff is important to me for some reason.. But do you also have same set of data that you just have no reason to use, but want to have?

Also, I'm planning to move software i don't use to cold storage that will be cheaper and in multiple stuff, these externals will be used for something (maybe storage for consoles or easily accessible videos I sometimes use).. Idk.. Just came to ask about above 🤣
