I have an old mid tower coolermaster CM 690 III advanced case with 7 3.5" bays and could easily fit another if desired but I was thinking of just getting 4 ironwolf drives in raid.

I also have an i7 6700k cpu and z170 pro gaming aura motherboard sitting in a cupboard that I could repurpose for it and a 550w non-modular power supply (but may actually get a new one for it).

Should I build a NAS out of this or just get a typical NAS?

What would be the best OS to install onto it for that purpose?

Would it use up a lot more power than a typical NAS would? I would try to keep it as low power as possible. Don't need a graphics card as it has an integrated one in the cpu.

Otherwise I will try to sell of the old parts but doubt they will sell or for much.

Thanks!

Hi,

I'm searching for a 1-2TB portable (and somewhat cold storage, look at the data every 6-12 months or so) and I'm doubtful about which route is better.

On one hand, an external SSD like the Samsung T7 Shield is well-known and and ready to go. A lot of people is using it as is and we know how it goes. I think the SSD/NAND isn't anything special (DRAM-less 3D TLC) but it's affordable and you get the complete package (SSD+Controller+USB Bridge+IP65 protection enclosure) - $92 1TB or 150$ 2TB

On the other hand, an SSD+Enclosure seem to have the potential of giving you better for the buck. For example, a Samsung 980PRO + ASUS TUF A1 would give you a better SSD on a similar IP65 strong case, for a similar price (at least where I'm based, give or take 15$) - Samsung 980PRO 1TB $95, ASUS Enclosure $45

My doubt arises with the controller and other parts that are not the SSD/NAND itself. When reasearching which SSD Enclosure to use, I've find the market is full of crap.

I could find a lot of comments about how the ASUS TUF A1 have random disconnections on some setups (and even incompatibility with some SSDs), mainly because the Realtek RTL9210B. Sabrent enclosure and others use the same chip.

Then, it seems there is another popular chip, JMS583, but only A3 revision is somewhat "good" and the rest is garbage, so it's a lottery to find and try to get the good version.

Then you have apparently good ones (chipset ASM2464PD) but then the enclosure ends up costing between x2 and x4 times the price.

So at the end, even if the SSD+Enclosure allows you to choose a better "SSD/NAND", would be better to just buy the complete package (External SSD like the T7 Shield) so you're assured you are getting a good controller chipset?

What would/did you do?

Thanks,

Hi, there is a lyric database I’d like to backup located at https://www.eurobeat-prime.com/lyrics.php

Is there software / a method I can use to archive each specific lyric page in as Artist - Track.txt or even as one large txt file?

So some background, I’m trying to deduplicate and merge around 40k photo/video files. Currently looking at using Duplicate File Detective but I cannot for the life of me find anything that tells me what it does with exif data. Like if I have duplicate photos but one of them has tags, is it going to merge the data or just randomly choose one and maybe wipe my tags?

I was running stressdisk on a new HDD, using the program to fill it with files. It seems the program stopped at some point overnight to state that two files are different sizes. After checking, it seems the last file it wrote wasn't a full 1GB in contrast to every other tst file so far - it only reached 648MB. Should I resume the test, or is a sign that something is wrong with the drive?

Aside form the crap I decide to horde from the outside world, I've horded every single line of code I ever wrote in my professional life. This is a shot in the dark void of the cosmos, but here goes. . . .

I'm a former engineer (mainly automation). A system I once spent a chunk of my life on was Siemens Simadyn-D and the software ran on SCO Openserver 3.2 (I think) as this was a few moons ago. It's called P32.Struc. One of the last things I did before leaving that project was to image the HDD of the 386 machine that ran the software we used to modify/program the SimD PLCs (this is in addition to all the actual code). I have a need to virtualize this image, but I can't find anything capable of understanding this backup and I can't recall what it was that I used to image the drive in this machine, but it could have been the DOS program Ghost or perhaps even a commercial program called Drive Image (4 or 5) that I would have bought during the project.

At some point in the past, I purchased and tried VMware, but it failed to see the ghost/DI image as a valid HDD image file and/or the virtualized image would not boot. The free conversion tool that was offered by VMware did not work. I recall that I went on a rampage getting all the various versions of SCO Openserver that I could find, but I was never successful in getting them to install. I do have the drive image ISOs, the backup file, code files, P32Struc installer, drivers - basically, every damn thing I should need to create a fully functional Struc Programing Station (sans some HW such as the P16/P32 programmer and the magneto optical backup drive) - but I couldn't get it to work on my last attempt.

For those that know SCO, it's a massive PIA and it's very sensitive to the HW. I really don't want to de-evolve down to searching eBay for a functional 386 machine with a SCSI HDD just to fail again. I'm hoping, perhaps beyond hope, that one of you has experience with virtualizing very old HDD images and, dare I hope, someone who has experience with SCO Openserver. I think my best chance is to get SCO running virtually and then fight my best fight to get Siemens' software to install and run on it.

Thanks in advance and thanks to the non-automation people who suffered thru my dribble in a concerted effort to understand what I need.

Just wondering if anyone have any experience with Internxt? I have a pCloud account and have been ok with them so far. But the new upload feature is not like before. Before If I want to upload a folder with multiple sub-folders and files inside, it would check through the directories and upload whatever is new. But now they do not do that anymore. Making it difficult for me to use the upload feature. Anyway, it seems there is only one other lifetime cloud plan provider, Internxt.

Just wondering if anyone have an account with them and can share some experience.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi, everyone needs to find a new place on the cloud to back up all my stuff after I ran out of space at Acronis (who thinks that 5TB is enough today for anything at all, but that's a rant for another place) and after (and after years) that I was able to back up double storage I paid for, they probably finally And fixed that bug....

So you need to find a new place at a reasonable price...

I am still going to use Acronis software as a backup software because they are simply one of the best.

But I have to find a place in the cloud and I always somehow find myself returning to idrive. From what I understood, taking their basic plans is the mistake that everyone makes and you have to take their e2 and then everything is excellent, reliable and works as you expect.

Is this true?

I am currently planning to buy the 20TB

But I heard so many horror stories about them and I wanted to ask myself the answer, can they be trusted with the data?

Everything will be encrypted (this is one of the reasons I use acronis software)

If there are other software that are open source and are good, I would love to hear them.

Thank you in advance and look forward to hearing from you

not sure if this the right place to ask this question but since u like mooving a lot of data it might be usefull to some specially since they propose a guest account solution ( no id, no mail only based on your cookie )

Does anyone know if this is secure or reliable ? it remind me a lot of anonshare but that was too good to be true and hey eventually shut down. It seem they offer the same service

Hello! I am blind and use a screen reader.

I am Brazilian.

I rely on digital formats for reading books.

Telegram has a channel with many, many digital books.

I would like to download all of these books to my computer.

I know I can download them one by one, but there are thousands!

I would like to download them all at once.

It is very important for me to have all these books.

I tried some solutions to download them all, but I couldn't get anything to work.

Telegram's accessibility for screen readers is quite poor.

For blind users, Telegram is awful!

I would like to ask: does anyone know a way to download the entire collection from a public Telegram channel to a computer?

If there's a way, please let me know.

I use a screen reader, Windows, and Android.

Thank you very much.

I'm trying to build a Network storage system for ..... things.

I currently have 2 rPi 4s, a AMD ryzen 5 2600 with motherboard, RAM, GPU and PSU.

2 - WD Blue 1TB SATA HDDs 7200 (2013, 2018) 1 - Seagate HDD 500GB 7200 (2012) 1 - HGST 1TB HDD 5400 (2017) 1 - Toshiba 1TB SHDD 5400 (2017)

1- San Disk SSD plus 120 GB (?)

1 - Crucial M.2 1TB (?) 1 - random m.2 128 GB (2018)

My fisrst question is should I ditch the HDDs and start fresh with newer gen models? If I get new HDDs would I be able to combine them with the M.2s and SSDs for one volume? How would I even do this? Whats the best solution for housing all these things? and lastly what system should I attach them to and how would I attach them? Any Recommendations would be great. I have a gigabit router/switch also if that helps.

Hey guys, I’m interested in starting a cloud storage Service. I want to know a phew things.

  1. Is this a pipe dream which is impossible to achieve, a specially sincei can’t code other than simple html.
    1. What money is required to start or get the middle ground set, I have $360
    1. What storage solution should I use? Like I just found out hdd racks are a thing and I can’t find drives bigger than 20 tb. Which is ok because I think I’ll start by renting 10 gb on the website.

Hey guys. A friend and I built Surfer, a desktop app that allows you to export your digital footprint and reclaim your data from Big Tech. All data is stored locally. It currently supports GitHub, Notion, LinkedIn, Gmail, and Twitter with more integrations coming soon. Would appreciate a star on the repo and some honest feedback!

My CentOS backup server failed. . . probably the PSU. Anyways, I'm now down to my Synology NAS for my backups along with Backblaze for my offsites. Not quite desperate (yet), but I may need to replace the CentOS server . . . with my 4770K based desktop computer and see about something more recent for gaming, etc.

Turning 70 this year, so I'm not looking too long term here. :D

Just ordered two 24 tb wd red pros as my seagate exos drive was just too loud to operate. I have one 20 tb wd red pro drive and it is so much quieter than the seagate exos drive. I've heard stories about wd drives making clicking sound once few seconds, haven't noticed that in my wd red pro 20 tb drive. Is the issue fixed or did I got lucky somehow? My question is - are 24 tb wd red pro drives loud? I'm fine with regular hdd whoooming sounds but the seagate clanking sounds were just too much for me. As the 24tb wd drives are new there isn't much information available online, so that's why I'm asking :). Can somebody tell me if 24 tb wd red pros have noise problems (like really loud clacking and clicking sounds). I'm running them on my PC which sometimes runs at night and seagate drives drove me nuts - thought it was my AIO cooling malfunctioning. 20 tb wd drive was like two times quieter, my concern is that the 24 tb wd red pro drive will be loud and will make random unwanted noise. If anyone owns it please tell me your experience with them. Thanks

Does anybody know who makes these hotswap cages? I've seen them sold all over the place by several different companies, but I've been unable to find the original vendor. It seems rather unlikely that such a huge number of companies are producing the exact same product. Norco used to sell them under the model number SS-500, but as far as I know they are defunct so I assume they couldn't have been the ones producing them unless all the new ones are clones.

Hey all, new to backups. If this shouldn't be here, let me know and I'll delete the post. Put simply, I am coming here for some opinions. I want to start backing my stuff up and I have some questions for how to go about it. For context, we're talking about 1TB of data - puny for you all I am sure but it's everything to me. Backups will be monthly or so. I keep a bare minimum backup of critical files and game saves, etc on a flash drive, which clearly needs a bit of an upgrade.

  • Cloud Backup: I searched the internet for a bit and heard Backblaze B2 come up a lot. Pricing seems manageable. Also heard Storj come up a few times - any reason to choose Storj over Backblaze?
  • Onsite backup: Looking at Seagate ST2000DM008/ST2000DMZ08 and this enclosure. I've heard good things about Seagate and Western Digital, as well as HDDs being better for long term infrequent-write storage. However, I am very inexperienced with backups so if there's something wrong here I'd love to know ahead of time.
    • How could I automate this similar to Apple's Time Machine so that only the data that has changed is transferred?
    • Should I upgrade the Barracuda model to IronWolf for an extra $30?
    • Is that enclosure any good? My SATA situation isn't great with my desktop so I was looking for something to make use of my USB3 ports.
  • Offsite Backup: Would a bank's safe deposit box with the second HDD in a protected case/box/whatever be a good idea? Or even necessary?

I am a college student, so saving money would be great. That said, saving my data would be even greater, so I'm prepared to pay as long as it's a good deal.

I went and got myself a Proavio DS316 from my workplace not too long ago. Missing two trays out of the sixteen but the unit powers up and seems to work. I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with these as I can't really find anything about them online besides sales related stuff. I figure I'm going to need to get a SAS card to connect to it, or maybe I can use the network port for something. Not sure if it'll show up as a local disk to the system it's connected to or not. This will be my first time dealing with something using SAS.

Please and thank you!

A website I use regularly for soap opera recaps was just sold and there’s rumors the recaps pages are going to be going away. I literally use those pages weekly and really don’t want to lose that.

I really only hoard videos so trying to get all these recaps is daunting and I don’t know where to start. Can anyone point me in the right direction or give me some advice?

It seems much harder to lookup options for rack based hardware… or at least I am having trouble.

I am not even sure what the terms/technology that I may be wanting…

Here is what I am trying to aim for:

  • rackmount
  • storage capability - let’s say 2-4 hdd (3.5), 2 ssd (2.5)
  • probably room for a reasonably powerful gpu
  • room for dual 10g sfp+
  • standard motherboard/power? ATX likely?
  • at least 2 nvme/m2 on motherboard (I assume I can just pick any ATX motherboard but what should I be careful of in a rackmount case?)
  • latest gen usb3 port externally (perhaps motherboard would have this covered?)

… now for some conflicting ideas…

Should I be looking to have storage by itself? Are there ways I can connect multiple computers to share a mass storage device that isn’t nas? What are SAS controllers? ISCSI? I assume there are faster options than USB or network?

I really have no idea what exists to weigh options.

Thanks

Hi! I recently had two SanDisk Professional G-Raid Mirrors fail and am now looking to replace them. I'm currently deciding between the Glyph Blackbox PRO RAID Desktop 40TB and the LaCie 2big 40TB, but it's hard to decide because they are so similar. I don't have experience with either brand, so any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! :)
