I'm an amateur historian with an interest in newspaper comics, and have been paying attention to, through not necessarily participating in, the Usenet newsgroup rec.arts.comics.strips for a while now. From what I've been able to see, the group dates back to around 1992. I would love to be able to somehow download all the messages from the group and read them offline at my leisure, but I'm not sure how to do that.

I can find mbox archives at archive.org, but they only date back to the early 2000s. The Usenet archive Narkive only goes back that far as well (though that site has no built in search function and is horrible for trying to browse to find anything older than about a month, so it's not even a good option for online reading). Google Groups appears to have the whole thing, but none of the solutions for downloading messages seem to work anymore after it changed to using Javascript. There's also UsenetArchives.com which goes all the way back, but I haven't found a way to download messages from there either.

Is there either a current, up to date way to download a newsgroup from Google Groups, or a way to download from UsenetArchives.com that anyone knows of? Or perhaps a better place to look for a more complete archive?

Looking for a 4 or 5 bay (3.5” drives) external (USB 3 or eSATA) enclosure and need to keep the price down. I’m considering the Mediasonic HF2-SU3S3 ($99 on Amazon https://a.co/d/gMKWhLn) but I have concerns about airflow/keeping the drives cool. What’s the least amount of money one can spend to get an enclosure that won’t toast my data drives?

hi! i've looked up some similar questions on this subreddit, but i saw people also needing some sort of streaming or sharing from the software: i don't need it. basically, i would like to find a desktop app (preferably for both linux and windows, but only windows would go as well) where i can simply manage media (for example, movies or series). the thing is, most apps are using local files, i don't need it, i just want to manage my library of, for example, movies i've watched, movies i plan to watch, etc (with pulling from some movies database, of course).

it may have some ability to connect local files to library entries, but it is not necessary. overall, something like playnite, but for movies / series / books, etc. (may be different apps or single one, it doesn't matter). preferably opensource and with local database, but any good one would go. i tried tinymediamanager, but it is just too clunky.

so, basically it is some sort of metadata manager that may have ability to play or show media if it is present on device. is it even possible? or maybe there is a hidden option in something like jellyfin/kodi/plex and similar apps? i cannot afford to store all the media i want at once, at least for now.

thank you all in advance!

Im trying to scan a book using my printer's built in scanner and naps2, but near the middle of the book, text gets a bit blurry near the spine cuz its further up instead of being pressed on to the scanner. How do i deal with this?

Hi all,

I put together a first home storage setup on a relatively tighter budget: ~$150 for 12TB, (4x3TB raidz2 = 6TB effective). Parts list is below, prices including shipping:

| Part | Qty | Price per qty | Price | |

|

|

|

| | Dell Optiplex 760 SFF: Core 2 Duo E8400, 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM | 1 | $23.93 | $23.93 | | HGST HUS724030ALS640 3TB 7.2k 3.5" SAS Drive | 4 | ~$10 | $39.99 | | SFF-8088 to 4x SFF-8482 SAS cable | 1 | $14.87 | $14.87 | | LSI 9200-8e SAS card with external port | 1 | $23.93 | $23.93 | | 700W ATX power supply | 1 | $29.99 | $29.99 | | 10-layer acrylic hard drive rack | 1 | $16.99 | $16.99 |

I think I got a real good deal on those drives. I've got the server up and running with EndeavorOS and ZFS. The CPU's less powerful than I would like, but it seems to run my FileBrowser and Jellyfin instances just fine. I'm pretty happy with it so far, but I'd love to hear the community's thoughts. I should probably put a fan on the hard drives, but my temps seem to be hovering around 40-50C so it seems okay for now.

Hi everyone. My question is in the topic in tl;dr.

As much as I understand after reading about the benefits of a DRAM chip in an SSD, it helps to provide a map to the SSD of where some recent information is located for the SSD to quickly identify that file location and immediately get to it saving time and effort to search for that file. This not only helps the user to save his time but also stresses the SSD less and so the longevity of the SSD can be prolonged/maintained.

Does the HMB in SSDs help in the same way?

Because the DRAM chip adds to the SSD's manufacturing cost, many companies right now in the budget segment have implemented an HMB technology in which the micro controller of an SSD directs the RAM of the entire computer to store some of the recent most read data on it which would otherwise have been kept in a DRAM chip on the SSD (DRAM is not present in HMB powered SSDs). How much of the desktop RAM is allocated for the HMB caching? Does anybody know? Also, because this also keeps the recent most read data on another storage device (RAM) to be accessed/mapped quickly without too much SSD searching, shouldn't an HMB technology also save the SSD time and stress when the user asks for the same files? In theory, it seems it does, but can anybody who knows this confirm this issue? SSD durability/longevity is extremely important to me is why I ask this question. Please correct me if I am wrong anywhere. I really want to know so that I can decide on my next SSD.

Have a Qnap TVS 671 that runs my Plex server I have 16gb ram and i7 intel.. running JBOD with 21.46 actual space and wanting to upgrade to all 22 tb drives.. however I was wondering since l'm just running JBOD can I run each of the 6 bays individually? Reason in my head is if a drive goes bad then I only loose the movies/TV shows on that drive and the Plex server still says working.. put what I don't know is how this affects the server negatively? Could you lovely people help a newbie understand?

As the title asks, is that unit so far out of date that it wouldn't be safe to have hooked to a network? I stumbled across it at work, it still has the circular circle on the bottom, it's never been opened. I just can't imagine how it could be brought up to standards so it isn't a massive safety risk though. Does anyone have any thoughts on it?

Hi all,

Daughter is looking for a couple of ~6TB Ext USB3 desktop backup drives and from my previous experience of such things, am aware that not all externals are shuckable.

Could anyone confirm if the current WD (WDBWLG0060HBK-EESN) / Seagate (EAN: 3660619040414) external drives are please? (UK)

I use Windows primarily so my RAID was formatted in NTFS. We just bought a Macbook and immediately had to take everything on a trip, so I tried my hand at Paragon (that NTFS for Mac program). The install went fine but it caused my drive to split as mentioned above. I uninstalled Paragon and now I just want it to function as a RAID again.

Is there a way I can do this without formatting or rebuilding the drives?

Is there any way to set up a script for Instaloader to download instagram stories from specific users?

For example, I would like the script to download the desired users stories every 4th hour or so every day.

Does somebody know a solution for this on Windows?

And if so, can you make it ”skip” the already downloaded stories so it doesn’t download the same story multiple times when running this script?

I'm looking to get a couple of 1 or 2TB external drives to back up some bulky video files I've used for editing in the past, don't really plan to reuse but would like to keep stashed in drawers and maybe booted up once every six months at the most. I've heard about SSDs being less reliable if not booted up every now and then, but not seen much within the last year or so.

Should I still stick with HDDs if I'm not expecting them to get bashed around and might even forget to boot them up for a year or so? Or do SSDs at that volume look better than they did a couple of years ago?

I've already got multiple kinds of backup for all the files I really care to hang on to, this is just about deciding the best way to back stuff up and take my mind off it as much as possible.

I've been slowly getting into saving data - mostly books, at this point, with about a terabyte of movies too. One big section I'm neglecting is music - I save data so that I can use it later if I don't have internet access, and I'd go nuts without my music.

At the moment, I use Spotify because it works well. I've got a ton of playlists, ton of different genres I like, but there's one big issue being that I don't actually own the music, it's just getting streamed to me.

What I'd like to do is download the music of all my favorite artists - if I had to guess, around two thousand songs - and then store it in a way that lets me easily play what I want (ie not just playing a single MP3 at a time, being able to set up playlists and such).

One problem: I don't have the foggiest fucking clue how to do that! I've hardly even used CDs in my life, never owned an Ipod or anything - yes, I'm an adult, just a young one - so I don't really know what my options are. I've downloaded a few albums and they can play on my macbook through iMusic, but again - reliant on Apple staying functional and having internet.

Is there some sort of homebrew music player I could build? Should I be looking at an iPod? Portability isn't a massive deal - maybe a bunch of CDs and a player?

TLDR: want to have all my favorite songs available totally offline, help a dude out.

Hey all, not sure this is best group to post but im sure a few fellow ocd hoarders here have an answer/experience.

I've been trying out slowly every once in awhile a new outlook tool, specifically looking for a few features.

I'm using office 2021 outlook desktop for windows using offline pst/ost files

  1. duplicate sorter: being able to not only delete exact duplicates but to also recognize duplicates with the exception of receiving email address line or forwards. Similar to some video/picture duplicate finders to refine a list showing anything below %100 and above %90 as duplicate so I can manually sort through and decide on the less than complete duplicates.

  2. email analytics Metadata export, I want to be able to export a list of every single email address I've sent and received emails as well as the date of 1st, date of last and numbers in between maybe even each year has its own column so it breaks out 20 sent 23 received in 2019 etc.

Any suggestions or help is appreciated. Thanks!

Not sure if this is the right place to ask.

Have old obscure ios games backed up from 2010s that I want to play again. Is there a way to emulate them?

I have a macbook with xcode but you need a developer accounter in order to run them.

Seems like the only way is to buy an old iphone or ipad. (which i know it's cheap but I rather look for a free alternative first)

So I am trying to figure out an easy way or if it's even possible to get my old windows installation from my old NMVE drive to be put inside of my new mobo,I do understand that it needs new drivers and such. I'm hearing yes and no from multiple different sources. So if I can't do that is it at least possible to put all of those programs and such on an External hard drive and then transfer it after a fresh windows installation. TLDR: I have a new CPU and Mobo, don't want to loose/ reinstall stuff, can I backup or put the old drive inside the new mobo?

I have a total of 12 harddrives varying in size from 3TB to 14TB and as you can see adding up to about 65TB when pooled. The mini pc I have been using to manage this is in need of replacement and I am wondering if anyone has any better advice? I have 3 USB harddrive enclosures that hold 4 drives each. I liked Drivepool because there was some redundancy even if it wasn't a true backup.

H drive is family photos and videos as well as a small Plex library and O drive is my business files (mostly video production)

Should I just get a new mini pc and keep going, or switch to a NAS?

Advice appreciated.

Hi there, I'm trying to extract a 3D model from a website on this page www.beatsbydre.com/speakers/beats-pill

I've been all over the web looking for easier methods rather than the "Ninja" App.

After many years of hoarding hardware I decided to build myself a NAS. My setup will be 3x10TB in RAID5, that is clear for me. Case will be Jonsbo N2. But now I am trying to decide on the other hardware.

I have bought a set for a good price (200€). Specs:

Motherboard: Gigabyte B550I Aorus PRO AX

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600X

RAM: 16GB Kingston Fury 3200MT/s

But now I am trying to decide if this set isn't a huge overkill. R5 3600X is kinda hungry so I would try to buy some cheaper and less power consuming APU with monolitic core like 4650G.

On the other hand - my workhorse ITX setup has these specs:

Motherboard: ASRock H370M-ITX/ac

CPU: Intel Core i5-9500

RAM: 32GB Kingston Fury 2666MT/s

I was considering if this route would be better for the NAS. But this board has its problems - couple of CPU legs are missing in the socket and due to that integrated GPU is not working. Also the NIC is sometimes behaving strangely and I am not sure what is going on.

Please, help me decide what would be the best route to take. Thank you!

I got a few of these guys in (nameplate says 8460 but internal data says they are 8462) and am trying to configure them. I've seen posts from several folks talking about changing fan settings and such. I have connected via Telnet and can view things like fan settings and Platform Configuration but do not see a way to make changes. Anyone out there that can advise on how to change fan settings and Zoning Configuration? I'd be happy to pay someone a fair rate for their time if they could provide some guidance here. Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I just lost everything to a house fire. I lost my 32TB rig that was basically a file server. Was going to set up VPN and some solution to get lossless audio streaming to my phone once I was ready to pay for a good data plan on my mobile...

I was able to get an 8TB backup of my "Other Media" containing music, software, porn, and some other stuff. I realized that I was so grateful for this... I didn't really and don't really care about my movies and shows. I can get those again easy. My music collection it turns out, is my most precious to me.

My music archive is around 1.2 TB and will probably grow to 4TB over the next 3 years. I will then refine it and reduce it unless storage capacities just get insane soon.

I want simplicity now, not complicated infrastructure and solutions. What should I do to get the following

  1. Be able to backup my 2-5 TB of music so that if every physical item I own is destroyed, I can still access it.

a. I'm not ready to mirror. I don't want extreme. Cloud storage would be fine with me.

  1. Be able to access the media remotely.
  2. This one might be a stretch, but if I go cloud, which is what it sounds like I should do, are there are cloud storage solutions that will enable me to play .wav, .flac, .mp3, and other file types on my phone's apps?

a. I presume the web browser and web app of the storage service won't let me play .flac files much like google drive doesn't.

b. Any 5TB cloud storage options that let you stream from? Any android apps that can peruse and play files from a 5TB cloud storage solution?

Any suggestions to help me secure and grow my music archive again would be lovely and I love you all in advance for the advice.

I built a NAS (currently running NixOS, Mergerfs, Snapraid, Samba, Nextcloud..) for my dad and he wants to back up stuff from it to an external hard drive. I'd do it from the command line but I need a GUI tool for him to do it. Is there a NAS OS (like Truenas, Xigmanas, OMV...) that let's you connect an external hard drive to your NAS, have it mounted and then let's you do incremental backups to that drive?

Recently I've been mostly listening on Youtube Music which is fine for now. But things I like, I want to add to my offline archive, which means owning in some legit way.

I can use Amazon, buy albums and download. For some more obscure things, I've used Bandcamp. Am I missing anything? Is there anything that competes with Amazon digital music with ability to buy and download? I'd prefer lossless but I'm not super picky.

I found a similar question about a year ago, but things change and a different audience might have different knowledge.

https://www.reddit.com/r/AppleMusic/comments/169o68i/where_does_someone_buy_music_these_days/

Qobuz Is currently passing for my weird check. (The Sounds, Rasputina). They don't have the album A Dark Cabaret, but nothing does (which is why it is something I check for to see if a collection has good coverage).
