I've a couple of EXOS X18 16TB and I'm very satisfied. I decided to buy and try a refurb X18 16TB and after a bit of load, I got SMART errors/warnings (Offline_Uncorrectable/Current_Pending_Sector):

So I took it out from my ZPOOL and earsed it, so I can send it back... for testing reasons, I added it back to the pool and resilvered it (just to see resilvering the first time).

But now, I don't see any SMART errors/warning anymore... so what happend and should I stay with the drive now or send it back to the dealer?

Exactly what the title says.

If I have to I’ll just move them back into a case, but I’d rather have a more complete solution. I really like the STL3, but it’s too loud to sit next to anymore.

So I am currently on ubuntu and i have a media library with some files in a folder named something like this: Episode 1 - random text here Episode 2 - random text here

I was wondering if there is any way to change the names of all the files in the folder to where their names look like this: Episode 1 This way the random text after is removed. Now the problem is that there is over 400 files so i dont want to do it manually. Is there any program or command that can do this?

Original Title: MiniDV camcorder capturing at 4:2:2? Converting Laserdiscs to MP4 and noticed in TMPGEnc that the color format of the AVI was 4:2:2. I thought MiniDV captured at 4:1:1? Or is this due to the AVI container that the file is held in? (recorded from MiniDV camcorder via firewire to WinDV software)

Just found out my H200 is flashed to IT Mode which I don't want to use in my ESXi based server/fileserver. So I want to flash it back to stock, does anyone know if this is possible and if so, how?

I found a guide for another Dell card and someone got it worked out for their H200, but I would like to know if there is more information available on this.

I’m looking for some general advice regarding storage in the setup I am making - if you can give any advice on any part of this, I would love to hear it!

I am setting up a small home server/minilab, primarily using a Lenovo ThinkCentre M720Q with an i5-8500T and 16GB of RAM (which I will upgrade if needed/wanted later), and supplemented by some Pis that can run independently for some redundancy on important services like Pi-hole & Unbound, for simple always-on tasks, and for location-specific implementations (e.g. one connected to a servo motor).

I am new to Proxmox, and am running it on the M720Q, within which I intend to run (amongst other things) Jellyfin, a NAS solution such as TrueNAS/OMV - I have yet to choose (please feel free to make suggestions based on the rest of the post), and Home Assistant.

I have Proxmox installed on a 256GB SATA SSD and I intend to add a 2TB NVMe SSD for running the VMs/containers. I also have a healthy but not new 5TB external (USB) HDD that I can devote to it. I am looking for advice about a few main things, both to do with storage media:

  1. For running a NAS, for now I intend to use my 5TB USB HDD, but I intend to eventually get some high-capacity 3.5in HDDs and a multi-drive enclosure for them. I have a good idea of what drives to get, but am less informed about the enclosures. What should I look for, and are there any specific models/brands you would suggest when on a budget? I understand that USB-connected enclosures are not ideal - what other options would work well here?
  2. How useful would it be in the long run to spend the extra money for a dedicated NAS enclosure or otherwise to offload the data processing, compared to running the NAS within Proxmox with the drives in a basic enclosure as I currently intend?

Please feel free to add any other suggestions too!

I've been using the Sabrent with USB 3.0 but it's so damn slow for file transfers from computer to internal drive. Are you guys using any thunderbolt docking stations that you'd recommend?

Hello everyone. I'm setting up a plex server and I need advice for long term hard drive use.

I'm working with a 1tb ssd that runs windows 11 pro edition, and a 14tb hdd on an HP Z2 G5 tower workstation. Don't worry about the other specs. I can add or remove components like RAM or graphics cards at user suggestion.

My issue is that the hdd is great for long term storage, especially cold storage, but I'm worried about its failure rate for longterm active use. Is that a valid concern? And if so, what is your expert opinion on ways I can make my storage system sustainable and usable?

We all know the importance of having a offsite backup, but how have you solved where to have your offsite?

Bank safe deposit boxes are being phased out, and at least here where I live a storage unit is quite expensive. For about the same money I could rent a same size or bigger 1-bedroom apartment a little further away.

I am contemplating buying a cheap property from the countryside, maybe it could double as a non-data related hoard site also. Has someone else gone this route?

I recently had a near-death experience (don't worry I'm safe, but some of my data nearly died) with 2-2-1 backups. My largest data HDD suffered partition table corruption (user error) during an upgrade, and all I had was cloud backups.

I quickly learned a few things,

  1. cloud backups run with a time delay and prioritize small files first, so newer large files were missing from the cloud backup,
  2. some tiny percentage of my oldest files suffered a persistent failure to restore: after working with Tech Support of the cloud backup provider who were unable to resolve the failure, the best explanation is that they suffered bit rot in the cloud
  3. crash recovery software can be effective but can also be "too effective": it recovered 3x the amount of data on the crashed drive, most of it duplicates, corrupt duplicates, and duplicate contents with Lost File Name. This was a massive time-consuming pain to cleanup, even after arming myself with deduplication software.

I've now instituted an emergency 3-2-1 configuration, using ROBOCOPY to make a local backup to an external HDD, while keeping the same cloud provider for now (they gave me a refund and a free renewal to keep me around). I'll eventually replace the could provider, but for now I'm focusing on improving the local component.

I'd like to improve this a bit without making things too complicated. A couple of things bother me about ROBOCOPY:

  • The external HDD has no mechanism to detect bit rot (not until you try to retrieve a rotten sector years later). There are no visible checksums anywhere. And as I learned earlier, neither has my cloud provider. So I'd like to incorporate some sort of checksum (MD5, SHA1, etc) integrity check into this whole system.
  • The files on the external HDD are not discoverable and not tamper-proof. It's not like you can look at the contents of an old drive and know "oh, this is a full backup from such and such date, and here's a checksum to verify that the entire back-up is intact". There is no way to detect missing files.
  • I feel the files are too "exposed" and can be easily tampered with, accidentally or maliciously.

What are y'all using for you local copy in your 3-2-1 setup?

I saw an old post about high speed scanners. The poster suggested that scanners work too slowly to warrant USB3 connectivity. I was thinking about this today as I scanned 50 or so old family photos.

The actual scanning process took about 19 seconds but the progress bar continued on for another 23 seconds. (It took the same amount of time whether I was storing the photos on an external HDD or SSD.)

I’m not sure if the extra 23 seconds was the scanning program processing the image or the USB2 connection slowing everything down…

Hello all,

First time posting here and I am just a little stuck on a situation I have.

The previous IT Head set up these 16 Bay Netstor SAS to backup and also work on certain data. He passed away and left no documentation so I have had to pickup the pieces. He originally had this set up on a Mac OS but we've migrated to Windows based systems. With that the case and the chance of mixed systems I figured it would be best to reformat the drives to exFAT, so I backed up all the information on different drives.

I have it connected via SAS cable to an ATTO r680 pcie card, and what's happening is the raid group is failing to initialize the disks in Atto Configuration Tool. Which I know if I attempt to transfer the data it'll just crash. The drives are all 3TB drives that were originally in the system.

Is there something simple I am missing on the configuration?

I tried searching online and finding videos but I am not sure what I am missing.

Thanks all for your help.

Hello hoarders!

I have some hardware laying around and I would like to build a small NAS out of it (TrueNAS probably).

(I will not store anything important in it)

I'm not sure... how many 2.5" hard disk drives can I connect to the single SATA power port this PC have?

The hardware:

  • DELL OptiPlex 3040 (D11S001)
  • 180W DELL HU180ES PSU (check photos for details)
  • PCIe (x4) card to x10 SATA data ports
  • A lot of SATA power splitters (18 AWG)
  • A dozen of 2.5" hard drives (from 500GB to 1TB)
  • 2.5" drive cages

The issue:

Technically I have enough splitters and SATA data ports to connect most of them but that single 6 pin cable how much power can sustain?

The cable (0HG2F3) is 22 AWG

6 pin cable

PSU

Thanks!

Hello!

I need a way for my father in law to keep his family photos safe.

His PC knowledge is on "i can burn MP3 CD, but definately cant reinstall windows drivers" level.

I wanted to get him a good external drive, and buy him subscription for some cloud that is easy to use, like google drive. He could look at and show people photos from cloud from his laptop, and keep a safe copy on external hard drive.

So, for external harddrive (1TB will be enough, its just already sorted through photos that are "presentable", not photo dump with everything, so not that many) - is it HDD or SSD? Speed doesnt matter, it will only be for writing new photos into it, and to get them back if cloud fails.

And which cloud? Is google drive safe? I remember i had problems with it, not all the photos that were in folders were showing and some stuff, is it still like this? If not google drive, what would be best?

Thanks!

Helo all, lately sometimes my hdd(s) fail and wont show in windows explorer, so I was thinking its a good time to somehow back them up. My pc has following: **ssd 128gb for windows **hdd 1tb for data **hdd 1tb for data

I was thinking the following new setup Internal: *m2 ssd 256gb for cloning my ssd * 2tb to have all my data from the two harddisks **8tb to there do at least two full backups

External: **8tb to clone the internal 8tb hdd

Is it good plan or not, what do you think?

Hey,

I'm brand new to the home server community and want to have a NAS for cloud storage for me and my family.

My idea initially was to use the old small pc as a NAS by using 2 USB hard drives as storage or a USB connected storage unit. However I saw a lot of people discouraging that approach due to slow speeds.

Now I'm thinking to use that old PC just for a home server running Casa OS where I can run my NextCloud instance and use another NAS connected to my network for the storage.

I want to ask you if that is even possible and in that case where I should look for information on how to set it up?

I looked through a lot of NAS boxes and they all seem to be standalone machines with CPUs and RAM and everything. In that case do I need that small pc as a home server running?

Thanks in advance!

On the market for a UPS for my Unraid server but I'm not too knowledgeable about them. I narrowed it down to two models:

CyberPower CP1500AVRLCD3

CyberPower CST150UC-FC

For some reason, every time I create the post with links to the products, Reddit removes my post. Not sure why but you can find the first model on the Amazon Canada website, while the second is on the Costco Canada website. Both are 1500VA / 900W. Why the 45$ CAD difference between the two and which is the better one?

I just don’t know what to do with these files. It’s hundreds of design files for concert graphics for skrillex in 2011 - 2012. I got this drive from someone who got this drive from someone else. I don’t like skrillex much but I understand the importance of this era of dubstep and feel weird about deleting the data. Anyone know of anyone archiving this type of data or know anyone interested in these types of file. Thanks!

Hello fellow DataHoarders, I’d like to expand my space because the available space on my pc of 1.5TB is getting pretty full. I have a collection of game install files, series and movies and other stuff that I’d like to put on an external or additional internal drive. I’d prefer an external solution with an SATA SSD with 1 TB as the folder I want to keep on it is currently about 700-800GB in size. As I already have an 2.5 inch HardDrive/SSD to usb enclosure I’d thought that an ssd would be the best option to keep transfer times low in case of need. I recently bought a Kingston A400 and tested it by using the full 960gb but the transfer speeds are pretty bad so I am going to return it. In my pc I already use an 5-6 year old Crucial MX500 and thought if this would be an good alternative. But after a little bit of research I read that it got a downgrade in DRAM size in recent revisions so i thought I’d ask for advice here. What are your recommendations on SSD‘s for my purposes? Would you keep the cheap kingstons as the transfer speeds don’t matter that much once it’s loaded or do you know a reliable alternative? I also want to add that i already saw a few posts about SSD‘s on this subreddit but they were already pretty old and it seems like manufacturers like to alter the SSD‘s whilst doing everything to not let the costumers know about it so it’s hard to refer to some reviews that are already a few years old.
