Hi all,

Im new here and im complete newbie on this topic.

Im bulding a NAS and bought some IronWolf Pro 12TB disks.

I was reading some guides and they recomend to scan the drivers although are new. I start scaning with Victoria HDD and on this moment it has a percentage of 20%, but im concerned about the called "slow sectors", how many is bad? Please check the attached image, should i continue the test?

I bought the units from Amazon, if you clarify me that it is bad, how i should proceed with Amazon for Warranty?

Thanks a lot!

I've got a 1tb Sandisk SSD and a 2tb WD HDD, along with possibly a 128gb Sandisk USB and same size/make SD, that I'd like to encrypt and password protect. That forms the majority of my data backup system.

My research into securing drives like this indicates that Veracrypt is just about the best possible option. From what I've seen, I would tend to agree with that.

I have a Macbook Pro as my computer that I'd be using to encrypt everything, pretty sure that'll work well. I just have some questions before I get started:

  • Is Veracrypt still the best option for encryption and password protection of a portable drive?
  • Has Veracrypt been compromised by any of the three-letter agencies? I ain't doing anything illegal, but I'm just curious.
  • When I downloaded the VC installer, the download page also mentioned something called Macfuse - linked there that I've downloaded as well - that's needed to use Veracrypt. What's this doing, exactly?
  • Is VC particularly difficult to use for someone not very technically minded?

I'm open to any and all advice.

Title.

Headed on a trip in a little over a week and Im wondering if I can expect a replacement drive to arrive on time?

Those of you who have had a bad drive arrive from SPD, can I expect a timely resolution?

Basically the title is a minus r and plus r the same for burning videos onto a disc nowadays all players seem to support both but + r discs seem to be harder to find in my area. Thanks!

New version released! YT Channel Downloader is a cross-platform (Windows, Mac, Linux) open-source desktop application built to simplify the process of downloading YouTube content. It utilizes yt-dlp, scrapetube, and pytube under the hood, paired with an easy-to-use graphical interface. This tool aims to offer you a seamless experience to get your favorite video and audio content offline (i.e., back it up). You can selectively or fully download channels, playlists, or individual videos, opt for audio-only tracks, and customize the quality of your video or audio. The new version offers the ability to download age-restricted and premium content using your YouTube account [optional], as well as bug fixes and small improvements.

Please refer to the installation instructions in the Readme. On Windows, you also have the option to download the pre-made installer available from SourceForge or from Github Releases.

Suggestions for new features, bug reports, and ideas for improvements are quite welcome!

I'd like an SSD that has encryption but is also able to be used with a PC and Samsung phone (so I think that automatically rules out windows bitlocker as I dont think that will work with android). Does Samsung's default encryption (via Samsung Magician software setup) work with PC and android or does only the Samsung Touch have that capability?

Heyo,

I have 5 external HDDs connected to my plex / plexamp / audiobook server, which is about the same physical size and shape as those HDDs. They are currently in a little drawer with added ventilation but are starting to overflow and I'm concerned about heat build up.

How do you guys store your ever growing stack of external HDDs? Do you use a computer case with fans? And how would you suggest making it look non-industrial in a living space? (I'd be fine with a random computer case looking thing but my family would not!)

So I have a ZFS2 pool with n-2 of 8 disks. I logged in to see a bad disk. Pulled what I believe to be said bad disk. And started the resilver without looking. Then noticed it was the wrong disk. So I pulled that one and put the other one back. Everything was fine. Then to put the disk in the case proper I shut down to pull a stat cable. When I booted back up it did not resume the resilver but said the pool has zero disks. But I do see the 8 disks as available. And in pool as exported but it was not an option to import. So I detached the bad version of the pool. I now had an import option but it failed. I/O error. Put the bad disk back and the new one unplugged. Rebooted same issue. Try to go back to a backup of the OS. Same issue went back to my current build. Added the 9th disk via usb as I don't have anymore sata ports and all 9 show they belong to this pool. Tried to import. Still failed. Not sure where to go from here. At the end of the day any way to get the data off them to something I will take it would be nice if I could get the pool back as it was but If I need to put the disks on another machine and copy to another device I will.

Error I am getting during import. Hi! I am building my personal NAS and I'd like some ideas (or confirm mine) on how to setup my backups. I have 2 WD RED 6GB and 2 1GB old samsung enterprice HD and one 12TB. Actually I am using the 12TB on my PC to store all my data and I'd like to use the two WD RED in Raid 1 in the new NAS to store the most important data and maybe use the two 1TB Samsung for another pool in Raid 1 for some extra space (just to use them). I am thinking also to buy another 12TB to put in the NAS without a pool just to have a snapshot of the 12 TB in my PC. In the end, the 12TB will have all my data all togheter in different places (PC-NAS), the most important data in a RAID 1 on the NAS, what do you think?

I am going with this because the other day my old NAS (a simple synology 2 bays) died and I had to boot on a linux machine to recover them, not an easy task, so maybe add a big HD for snapshots on different machines could be safer. One problem I should face is synchronize all this stuff, I should need a program or maybe an app on the NAS OS (truenas scale) that do all this stuff at least once per day.

Thank you for your comments!

Like the title says, I’m finally moving out of my parents place into my own condo and need help building an ultimate setup. Not sure if this is the right subreddit but any help is appreciated.

Here is what I currently have (can upgrade/buy additional equipment as needed):

  • (3) 14TB External hard drives
  • Simple Gaming PC (Ryzen 3700x, Nvidia 3070 graphics, 2TB SSD)

Not much, just essentially building up from scratch as I only recently bought the above.

Here’s the setup I’d like to have:

-movies/tv show storage so I can watch my favorite past/upcoming media on a living room tv. I would also like to be able to stream for the occasions I don’t feel like waiting for tv shows to download. I read up on Plex/Jellyfin servers but my main concern is media playback. If I have my own server aren’t I still “streaming” it through WiFi? I have lots of frustrating experience with choppy movie streaming due to bad WiFi connection, and I’d rather skip that and play downloaded content directly to the screen without lagging or freezing.

  • Ultimate gaming setup (roms/emulators/batocera) - For this, I might be overcomplicating it but the goal is to be able to play off my gaming pc and desktop, but have to ability to switch over to the tv screen while still playing off the gaming pc. I’m trying to avoid getting a separate MiniPC for the tv since the gaming computer already has decent specs.
  • Lastly, storage for personal media so I can finally offload photos from my phone and Google drive and reliably save old media offline. Already lost old photos on my iPhone due to running out of storage and not syncing with iCloud.

Again, not sure if this would be the right subreddit to post in but any help is much appreciated. In terms of budget, I’m open to all ideas and may save up for any higher end setups suggested, but I’m mostly likely going for upper middle end setup.

I use this HDD as an External Backup HDD, and I copy over a lot of data to it (it is 4tb)

I realized it can get pretty hot, up to 51-52 C.

My other HDDs, don't get this hot, even in an external enclosure.

Is this because this HDD is an Enterprise HDD? People say it should be safe up until 60C?

Hey!

I have a very specific use case:

I need a software that, whenever I connect my external USB Drive to my PC, only Syncs a specific folder or range of folders to the drive with data that is missing on the drive.

Any suggestions?

I just recently got 1gbps internet and its insane to me how I can download a 100gb game in under 30 minutes now which before I use to have to wait 2+ hours for it.

It got me wondering, if I should get a couple 12tb hard drives since they're so cheap now and just download as much anime/tv as I can that would last a life time.

The fact i can get a 12tb for $200 is insane to me when barely a few years ago a 5tb would have been $250ish

Hey everyone! I'm strongly considering starting my own personal cloud so I can access my movies and data anywhere. My use case is that I'd like to be able to store and acess all my pictures and personal files from anywhere and also access a PleX server from outside my local network while I'm away from home. At most I'd have 1 to 2 users at any given time streaming up to 4k movies.

My friend is saying that I should just use an Nvidia shield with a hard drive connected to it for remotely accessing my plex but I can't seem to find much info on whether this is a suitable setup for also accessing my other files remotely. From what I've seen online a NAS seems to be a better fit for my use case but my friend is insisting that thats expensive and unecessary. I'm a very big beginner with regards to NAS's and Plex servers so I'd really appreciate some advice on getting started on my data hoarding journey, thanks everyone!

tl'dr

I need a recommendation for a relatively low power CPU capable of streaming and some basic lightweight gaming (no AAA, think CaveStory).

Unit will be placed in Jonsbo N3, hosting Windows and connected to a TV for convenience of family members. I don't need computing, no proxmox, just Jellyfin and some older games.

I am leaning towards AM4 platform on B550 board, but I'm really confused about AMD lineup, and I'm not sure about iGPU capabilities compared to 13th gen Intel.

I don't care about upgradability and the price gap between AM5 platform is not worth it, definitely not in this case.

Been using Telegram for a while now, besides the unlimited storage it just feels better for forwarding stuff from other chats, everything in one giant pile n all that

What's a better app? My current storage in Telegram is predominantly links, texts, pictures, a decent few GBs of files of files, and the odd video here n there

Specifically regarding links, if there's any cloud storage app that works well for organising text the way messaging apps do. Like one where you can clump a group of links in one message, reply to messages to connect them, searches are thorough, you can see relations between different messages from the fact that they were sent at roughly the same time, you can add a comment to a link, file or picture you send, you can search for text within the preview of the link in case there's a keyword that the link doesn't have in it

I don't mind paying, though if I can outright buy access to the service instead of subscribe, it'd be nice

Looking for something to update my ancient software... I have been using this software called Thumbsplus for ages, but now it is old and the company died; so I am looking for something else that does the same basically.

The main thing is that I don't want subscription based stuff or cloud based stuff; it needs to be running on my computer offline and I want to buy it and be done with it; until I need a new version.

What I use it the most is for 4 different tasks

  1. catalog and view images and videos (not to watch movies or as media viewers, but to get an idea of what a videos is all about for example). So something like acdsee or FSViewer works too for that, although it should support almost all file formats and codecs either directly in the app or should be able to launch those files in the appropriate player on my computer.

  2. run a search to find duplicates and mange large sets. I take a ton of photos and many times it end up with hundreds of images that I need to review, so I open them side by side to review and delete what I don't want to keep; but then I stop mid-way and start all over after months and have to reconcile what I already checked and what I didn't; so I need to de-dupe each set. So far beside Ligthroom I didn't find many apps that are able to find duplicates or similar images with a good degree of accuracy.

  3. decent minimalist editing features, in particular denoise and zoom/resize. As new apps use AI filters, would be nice to get an app that does resize and renoise of images that are small for today standards (like pictures I took with my 5MP camera 20 years ago); and scale them up and clean them up.

  4. able to create things like web catalogues in html from a folder; so I can export that as stand alone for a slideshow or portfolio for example.

Any photographer or similar that use these kind of software, that could suggest something that is fitting in these parameters?

Only for quick captures, does anybody know if the cheapo AV2HDMI boxes like this are made in separate 25 fps and 30 fps versions or do they all accept either? I just get that feeling they might be even if the seller descriptions say they do both PAL and NTSC etc. Does 25 in get converted to 50 as it should? I can't really find any comments on Amazon etc. from people trying to use something from a different region to the one they're in.

(I would need a 25 to 50 fps PAL one but I wonder if they even exist if they don't all do both)
