Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my dual-boot setup, which I'm trying to resolve. Here’s the situation:

I used to have a dual-boot setup with Linux and Windows. I had a partition on my computer’s disk dedicated to Linux, and when the computer started, it would run through GRUB, allowing me to select either Windows or Linux.

Recently, I deleted the Linux partition from my computer while I was on Windows. I went to Disk Management and deleted the Linux partition. However, when I restarted my computer, GRUB still appeared, but this time, it generated a "GRUB rescue" error and couldn’t boot into Windows.

My Questions:

  1. Why is GRUB Still Appearing? Even though I deleted the Linux partition, GRUB still appears when I start the computer. Why is this happening? Shouldn’t GRUB be gone along with the Linux partition? Here is an image of my boot order:
  2. BIOS Boot Order Seems Correct, So Why GRUB? I’ve already checked the BIOS and set the boot order to prioritize the OS Boot Manager (Windows Boot Manager) first, followed by USB devices, etc. There’s no mention of Linux in the boot order, so why does GRUB keep coming back? Here is an image of the boot order: Boot Order Image
  3. Why Does Secure Boot Fix the Issue? As a workaround, I enabled Secure Boot in the BIOS, and now the computer boots into Windows normally. But as soon as I disable Secure Boot, GRUB comes back. Why does enabling Secure Boot allow Windows to boot normally, and what’s the core issue here? Here is an image of the Secure Boot setting: Secure Boot Image
  4. What Are These Other Partitions in Disk Management? In Disk Management, I see several partitions: a small 250MB "EFI System Partition," the main Windows C: partition, a 1GB "Healthy (Primary Partition)," another 1GB "Healthy (Recovery Partition)," and a 500MB unallocated partition. What are these partitions for, and could they be causing the boot issues? Also, why can’t I allocate the 500MB unallocated space to anything? Here is an image of the partitions: Partition Image

I’m trying to understand this once and for all, so I’d really grateful if someone could help me understand and solve this issues.

Thanks

Does the Seagate Toolkit detect internal Seagate HDDs for backup? I only have experience with it for external drives, not internal. I know the Kingston Manager is able to detect internal Kingston SSDs and make backups of that SSD to put on another connected drive, but I don't know if I can put have a Seagate HDD in an enclosure and back up to that.

ORICO M.2 3.5/2.5" Dual HDD/SSD Enclosure USB C HUB 10 in 1 Multifunction Docking Station with PD100W Type C USB A HDMI RJ45 SD/TF NVME SATA Port for Professional Designer (D35M2) | Shopee Philippines

I was thinking of buying that dock because I need a new desktop docking station, and I wondered if I put a Seagate drive there, I can make it another offline backup, I am currently using an external Seagate OneTouch as a local backup for my work laptop, and it backups everytime I'm home when I dock, but I was wondering if I use this dock and put a Seagate HDD inside it, I can move the external drive to my work quarters and have that be the local backup there, then have this dock serve as the local backup at home.

If not, is buying a onetime license of something like Macrium Reflect worth it and I'd just use that to replace Seagate Toolkit?

Thanks for suggestions!

Hello,

I am looking at the Synology DS223j and the DS423. Seems like the DS423 is faster and has two extra bays? Synology’s website doesn’t make it easy.

Some questions:

  • my father has an 18TB Exos HDD in his desktop that he uses for mass storage. Can I take that HDD and plug it into the Synology NAS?
  • apart from the DS423 or DS223J are there any other options?

Use case is going to be running a Plex server, sharing files, etc.

Thank you

I am trying to RMA a drive and I go to register my drive but after I fill out the form and hit submit it just goes to a text page that shows all the fields and my entries versus actually registering it.

I have tried the page in FF, Chrome and Edge, all with the same result.

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a couple of USB drives from Amazon Mexico and I'm a bit concerned about their authenticity and potential security risks. Here are the details:

  • Kingston USB Drive: 128 GB for $10 (purchased directly from Amazon Mexico)
  • Kingston USB Drive: 64 GB for $6 (purchased directly from Amazon Mexico)
  • SanDisk USB Drive: 64 GB for $9 each (bought from a third-party seller on Amazon Mexico with 95% positive feedback, a 4.8/5 rating, and around 30k reviews)

I know it might sound paranoid, but I'm planning to store sensitive data on these drives and want to make sure they're not counterfeit or infected with malware. The drives look legit, but I’m still concerned.

Is there a way to check if these USB drives are genuine and free from malware before connecting them to my MacBook Air? Should I be worried, or is there a way to test them safely?

You can see the sticks here: https://imgur.com/a/XSkKwjC

Any advice or reassurances would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

X, before and/or known by many as Twitter, is closing in Brasil and I do not want to risk my collection of articles saved, are there any recommended scrapers to store locally the contents and links of my saved items?

Howdy.

Setting up a backup-to-disk scenario for airgapping backups of our Synology NAS.

We're looking for an enclosure that's something like this:

TERRAMASTER D4-320 External Hard Drive Enclosure - 4bay USB 3.2 Gen2 10Gbps Type-C USB Storage Hot Swappable Plug and Play (Diskless) - Newegg.com

Only with 1-2 drives, and something that we can pull a lever, or push a button, or something frictionless to enable rapid removal and replacement.

Ideally a single 22TB drive.

Has anyone seen anything like this?

Hello folks,

I want some advice on my backup strategy. My goal is simple: if my computer ever breaks or gets lost, I want to be able to restore everything exactly as it was without having to reinstall anything.

Here’s what I’ve done so far:

  • My Setup: My computer’s internal drive is an SSD, which holds everything, including Windows and all my files.
  • The Backup Drive: I bought a portable 2.5" HDD and created two partitions on it. The first partition is for storing independent files unrelated to my system/computer. The second partition is where I want to back up my entire Windows machine.
  • The Backup Process: I installed Macrium Reflect Home, and I cloned all the partitions from my SSD (Disk 1) to the second partition on the external HDD. The cloning process completed successfully, and now the second partition on the external drive looks similar to my internal SSD.

Questions:

  1. Is this the right way to go about backing up my system? My main concern is whether this method will let me restore everything exactly as it was if something happens to my computer.
  2. How do I handle future backups? If I add more data to my computer in the future, will I need to re-clone everything, or can I just add the new stuff to the existing clone?
  3. If my computer breaks and I get a new one, how do I restore this backup to the new machine? Is it as simple as copying everything over, or is there a specific process I need to follow?

So I was wondering it is worth it some amazon refurbished from spain or deuch? Or they are a good option or can be fake or white branded??

There a 10tb SEAGATE HD 3.5" 10TB Barracuda Pro SATA III for around 135€ and a Seagate IronWolf NAS 12 TB for 120 refurbished so I think they have 1 year warranty. Is this fine for hdds? at least better than from ebay? Thanks.

I’m getting a new external SSD delivered tomorrow from Amazon and I’m curious to know if there is anything I need to check right off the bat? I just want to make sure they I’m not getting a lemon.

The drive is:

Sold by: Amazon.com Services, Inc

Supplied by: Other

Edit- Apologies for not including this info earlier.

I’m getting a Samsung T7 touch. 2TB version.

I want to make sure I’m getting a genuine product and not falling for some scam.

Basically its vital experimental data which needs to be backed up for long term storage and occasionally access. What is the best cloud backup option with the ability to stream portions of the data once in a while?

Hello, I'm new to photo management software. I want to use it to:

  • Organize my photo library to seperate folders
  • Edit metadata.
  • Convert file formats

That's all at the moment. I've narrowed my search to these 2. I've read that both the programs have other features besides this. I'm ok with a learning curve as long the management workflow is faster.

  1. Which one shoud i use?
  2. What about in case I need more photo management features in the future?

I have a server which backs up every day and the back up takes 3GB (growing slowly). I want to upload these by s3 (and preferably also accessible with scp) to an offsite storage. Maintaining only the last 10 days of backups (so 30GB).

Glacier has minimum 180 day storage and others (rsync.net) have minimum volume (800GB).

Is there a recommended provider when amount to be stored is small and rarely accessed, so that egress fees are not an issue?

Right now, I'm looking at AWS (but scared about making mistakes as I've seen horror stories of huge bills) and Oracle.

My dad recently brought home his old camera which still uses tapes, and I'd like to get the footage onto my computer so that it isn't lost. It's a DCR-TRV255E PAL and I'm using a Mini-USB to USB-A cable to connect the two. I've also got a FireWire cable if needed, but I need an adapter to connect it to my PC (newer motherboard, no FireWire port). When I connect it, it says in the Windows devices that I "don't ahve the proper drivers installed". Are there any drivers or apps to save the footage?

Hey there,

So I have read through several NAS vs DAS threads in this subreddit to try and understand things a bit more, but none of them quite have the same kind of setup or needs so it unfortunately hasn't helped me much.I'm hoping someone can maybe help me pinpoint which one of these I need to be able to consolidate everything?

My current network situation:

  • Router downstairs beside my TV
  • Don't want to drill holes through ceiling to ethernet up my upstairs
  • Rely on WiFi upstairs which typically provides stable 800mbit, 35ms, 0 packet loss (never had an issue)

My current hardware and streaming setup:

  • An 8TB external USB 3 drive connected to a basic spec low power consumption 'mini PC' - Intel J4105 & 12GB RAM, running Windows 10 powered on 24/7
  • This HDD contains 7K & 8K VR content only I access, via my Meta Quest 2 - Windows library sharing settings are setup to exclude all devices in the home besides the VR headset
  • This setup currently works fine for streaming, despite the resolution and bandwidth of these videos and the low power PC that's streaming it to my headset
  • 2 x 14TB external USB 3 drives with 4K movies and TV shows I play via the mini PC to my bedroom TV
  • 1 x 10TB external USB 3 drive for general data storage and archiving (no personal data)

I'd like to consolidate all this together and:

  • Be able to access the 2 x 14TB HDD's from either of my DLNA TV's (one upstairs, one downstairs)
  • Access the 8TB HDD only from my Quest 2
  • Access the 10TB HDD from wherever, but mostly from my laptop
  • I want to consolidate it into one enclosure (NAS or DAS) for a smaller footprint and to move from 4 x power plugs to just 1
  • The data isn't valuable so I don't need any kind of backup or redundancies... If an HDD fails, I can just replace it and re-download what I lost
  • Everything will be streamed from inside the home only - no need to access anything while away or on the move

So the question is, would I be better served with a NAS connected to my downstairs router, or a DAS connected via USB 3 to my mini PC?

So I got one and installed it in my PlayStation few days ago. Yesterday my PlayStation was in rest mode and something happened that let the ps to force shut down it self.

After booting it up again a message occurred telling me that ssd wasn’t removed safely and It should he removed and put back in the ps.

I did that multiple times and still didn’t work. Did anyone face a Problem like this before.

Also can it be corrupted ? If yes, can a corrupted ssd get fixed ?

Hello everyone. I am completely lost on best practices for PC and handling files. I see all the issues I faced on writing speed for moving bunch of files was due to writing speed of SMR drive.

I would like to ask following question :

  • what type of drive should I use for data editing (encoding videos and pictures). I guess SSD but SSD drives are so expensive with low capacity within budget.
  • what type of drive should I use for storing finalized data ?
  • same question for backup.
  • what type of drive for gaming ?

Thank you.
