I have 1x large HDD installed in my rig which is screwed flat on the bottom of the case. The screw holes are padded with rubber, so neither the HDD nor screws touch the case directly and are supposed to dampen the tremble, i guess. I can still sense my desk vibrating slightly when the PC is running (it didnt before installing the HDD). So i've put the PC on 4 packs of tissues (one for each feet) as a test and the vibrating stopped, also the PC is considerably less noisy now. However, the PC is somewhat vibrating even more now as it can't pass on the movement. It sounds like such a stupid question while i'm typing this, but genuinely wondered if tremble affects the lifespan of HDDs or hardware in general. This PC is supposed to run 24/7. Is it in theory better for HDDs to operate secured as firmly as possible (what would happen if you screwed/glued one to the table?) or are the dampening rubbers supposed to also be protecting/absorbing the vibrations caused by the HDD (and not make it just more bearable for the user)?

CROSSPOST FROM r/datarecovery

so, I have 2 old discs that have been laying there for a while and when I tried to copy from them they were behaving weirdly, some folders couldn"t get access and so on, so I"d like to simply run some free tool to scan them and recover the weak sectors. I found Victoria, but I am not sure about some of the settings, can someone please tell me how to set it up?

https://i.imgur.com/UWB3oPq.png

I am not sure if I should use remap first and then refresh just to make sure, or the other way around. This is what I found:

  • Remap – the damaged sectors will be replaced with backup ones.
  • Restore – the program will restore the performed sectors.

also what"s the difference between Verify and Read (default one). what about the other settings?

11 years ago I built a Synology-based array of Western Digital Red 3TB drives.

Today I was looking to expand that array (either by adding more drives or replacing drives).

In 2013 I paid about $125 per drive for a 3TB Western Digital Red.

Almost 12 years later I see a 4TB Western Digital Red selling for about the same price.

Am I taking crazy pills?

Hello Hoarders!

Im looking to pick up a couple of 12TB NAS drives, but Im not looking for the cheapest drives available, Im looking for the most reputable UK seller which is not a marketplace like ebay, amazon etc. I dont want to be factoring in shipping costs at purchase or return shipping costs overseas if I end up with issues during warranty etc.

Which UK companies do you guys deal with and have had no fuss when needing support from?

So, as a lot of people here, I download a lot of movies and TV shows. And none of them have a clear name, for example instead of a folder, and the video file being named as "Despicable Me 2" or "Despicable Me 2 [2013] [2160p]", its name is "Despicable.Me.2.2013.2160p.4K.BluRay.x265.10bit.AAC5.1-[YTS.MX]". Because each movie is named differently, I can't just easily make a universal RegEx to rename all of them. So I'm searching for some program that'd prompt a LLM to ask for a clearer name.

If there are no programs like this, I might create a simple python script to prompt some free LLM API.

Thank you

My friend's SSD suddenly stopped working for him, at first it would error in windows saying files/folders are missing, and then stopped working completely in his PC, wouldn't even boot when its connected, sometimes would show "unallocated", its a generic SSD although it has DRAM (Silicon Power A55 1TB), it was used just as a game SSD, no OS or anything, just installed games.

When I put it in my PC it worked just fine, I just hotswapped it for one of mine, didn't even have to reboot, made some problems later but now works fine, the stats are attached here, total NAND writes number looks insane compared to r/W, I work in IT but dont have deep knowledge about storage, so any help to understand whats going on is much appreciated, and also to know if the disk is dying and shouldn't be used or its still usable, and what procedure should I take if its still fine to use and just needs fixing.

The P1600X 118GB is such a rare drive, I've been searching stores for hours. I've sent mail to stores and even wholesalers.. I am out of options. Should've bought them when they were still in production :(.

There is the actual scam: A site selling them for $35

There is AliExpress for €300?

What else is there.. :(

I can't find any 2nd hand listings in NL or neighbouring countries, am I fucked?

Why do I want it? I want to create a dedicated cache for write confirmations. For those familiar with TrueNAS: SLOG. This will become part of a testing server and if that goes well, apply it in the company.

From my understanding there is the DC 4511 and 905P but they are on the 22100 m.e form factor and also extremely expensive if new.

Does anyone have advice or suggestions that are in the 2280 m.2 form factor? Or maybe even stores that still have them(lol who am I kidding)?

Hello! I am really not tech-savvy and I haven't been able to find a resource to help. As a matter of fact I am so tech-unsavvy that I'm not even quite sure how to phrase this question (so pls be nice)

I like to backup all my iPhone photos as well as other stuff (ex. school slides) onto a 1 TB spinny hard drive. Within my hard drive I organize things in folders (which have subfolders) etc...

I recently purchased a non-spinny hard drive given that the other one is old (and I just thought it would be good to have everything saved onto two hard drives). I just copy pasted everything on my old hard drive on the new one (took about an hour).

As I have started to add new things to my new hard drive, I realized I have no clue how to keep the old one up to date without having to re-copy and paste everything from my new hard drive back onto my old hard drive. I feel like as I accumulate more and more stuff, it will take longer and be harder to do.

TLDR; Is there a way to just download the difference between two hard drives onto a new hard drive? Any help (esp in a "for dummies" way, with detailed steps) would be greatly appreciated

I am unsure if this is expected, but CyrstalDisk Info does not detect any SMART data from my Samsung 870 EVO drive while it can still be detected using CyrstalDisk Mark. I updated the Firmware, BIOS, and PSoC to the latest version in hopes that it would minimize these types of issues.

Is it normal for newer Broadcom HBA cards to not share SMART data about their drives? I have a separate system that uses a 9305-24i that at least shared SMART data.

For those who own a 9500-8i or similar PCIe4.0 HBA card, what software do you use to measure SMART data of individual drives? I decided to switch from my current 9305 due to power consumption and planning to hook the 9500-16i to a PCIe4.0/x4 slot.

Hello fellow data hoarders.

I have inherited my late dads DVD / Blu-Ray movie collection. The issue is, most of it is burnt (pirated) movies on DVD-R/DVD+R. I know I will be ripping the legit boxed ones to my NAS setup when I build it but should I worry about the other ones or toss them? Who knows if he even encoded them right and aren't poor quality.

I got into home labbing a year ago and I need a storage server for my projects, as well as an arr stack. Any advice for Nas cases that preferably fit within a $200 budget? I am planning to use sas drives (hot swappable?) and have a controller as well as all of the parts for the system, I just need a case. I don’t have any space constraints, as far as how many units it can take. Thx for any help!

Hey everyone,

First time Unraid and NAS user here. I had an older PC that I was not using and decided to build my first system in here.

My config is as follows

ryzen 3900x

32gb ddr4 3200mhz

evga rtx 2070 super water cooled

5 * Seagate Exos 16tb for the Array

1 * 860 evo 2tb SSD as a cache drive

Accessing through my m3 max MacBook

Home internet connected to Google nest wifi -> TP link 5 port gigabit Switch -> To Unraid Tower

The first week I copied a bunch of photos into the share via Finder as usual (Copy paste) and it worked fine for my needs.

As of yesterday, everytime I try and copy anything into the Share, my internet crashes and no web pages load. The copy gets stuck at estimated time remaining and never moves. It gives an error at the end. I have to restart my router and MacBook for it to work again.

I made sure SMD is set to Yes(workgroup) in Unraid settings and that I am logging into the share as a user with read/write permissions.

I am not sure what is happening, Google has not been much help. Any help would be appreciated. The current workaround I am doing is copying everything to an external SSD, then plugging in that SSD to the tower and copying via Krusader.

Hello, I've been trying to use WD's chat since 8:30AM PST (CHAT NOW-North America) and keep getting "Agents are only available during business hours for this region. Please try again later." The site clearly says "Online Store Support: Monday — Friday, 8am — 5pm PST" and I'm starting to doubt reality and time. Can someone, please, check? Thank you.

I regularly backup my WhatsApp to my Google Drive, and when I go on Google Drive to find the backup its there and it says the usual "If you change devices u can use this to restore everything etc".However, there is no way\ to actually open the backup and see the contents from google drive. Does anyone know any other way to look into the contents?

I am looking to digitally preserve family photos and documents for my extensive family. I am concerned about quality preservation when purchasing a scanner, but I don’t have a lot of money to put into it. Probably around the $300 range plus or minus based on what is the best choice. The reason I don’t want to use a service is because I know I don’t have all the photos across my extended family and I want to be able to either have them send me their photos or take the scanner to where they live to preserve the photos and documents they possess. Until I can convince them all to dig up all their saved photos and documents, I’d have to pay for many sessions of preservation with a service company.

I have delayed this decision for a couple of years now out of analysis paralysis of which scanner to buy and ultimately I end up backing out of decision and holding this project off longer because of some review that brings up a concern over quality.

I want to be my family’s advocate / historian to preserve all our history and make it available to them online, but I need guidance on this first step.

Any advice?

I am looking to consolidate some of my storage as I have movies spread over several hard drives (I previous bought as I needed, so these range from 500GB to to 1.5 TB) and have had my eye on a T7 for a bit.

I understand the Amazon listing says 42% off, but I'm skeptical if this is actually a good price? (I'd be going for the 4TB)

I've been using wasabi for years now. I have about 20tb of data stored there and add about a tb every couple of months.

For the last month or two, I've noticed uploading data is getting more and more error prone.

I've tried different servers, different accounts and etc. I still get issues with timeouts or no route to host.

I've troubleshot everything I can think of and still run in to issues.

Meanwhile, I've started using vultr for storage and it works flawlessly everytime. It's not a feature packed but it's cheaper and works well.

Anyone else having issues with Wasabi lately?

I primarily use it with s3cmd but will be switching to rclone shortly to start migrating data out to my other backup host.
