I have a bunch of magazines some are large, like A3 sized and I'm looking to scan them and hopefully upload them to Archive.

What's the best Scanner for such a job? Or the best way generally scan larger magazines?

Preferably without having to take the staples out, if It can be avoided.

Does anyone have any experience with https://neology.com.au ?

Seems like a carbon copy of serverpartsdeals, but for Australia.

This is probably not the most fitting subreddit, but you guys are savvy about data storing methods. I have an upcoming outdoorsy trip where I'll only have access to a camera that exclusively requires 2gb cards (it's on the older side). The only problem is that the prices seem steep and I don't plan on limiting myself to that itty bit of content with a single card. So I'm wondering if any of you guys have a good resource to help me out?

Hi guys, looking for a reliable 8TB external drive since SSD is very expensive at 8TB I'll settle for HD, I'm looking for a brand that offers decent speed to playback 4k without issue and reliability, running cool is a plus but not a must. All advice will be considered thanx.

Currently, I have my entire PC backed up with an encrypted cloud provider.

I also have a Cryptomator drive mounted in the cloud which contains sensitive documents (passwords, 2FA recovery codes, financial documents, etc...).

I also have a 2nd Cryptomator encrypted external hard drive with a duplicate of the first vaults data which I keep offline.

Is it wise to keep my external drive encrypted or would it be better to keep it unencrypted, even though it contains sensitive information? I'm mostly worried about encryption corruption in the event I need to use the offline backup. Leaving it unencrypted would make it more of a risk in the case of theft.

I have been able to download many flash games recently, but there's a few websites that I can't get swf from. I read on r/flash that on windows, you can click inspect element and search .swf in the html parser to find the file itself. I tried that and nothing has worked in that regard. I don't want to have to pay for an addon to firefox to download the content, so can someone please give me advice as to how to continue?

Hey guys, I’m relatively new to the more in-depth side of data hoarding and need some advice.

After some research, I feel an off the shelf NAS isn’t quite what I need as they’re expensive and the files that will be stored will only really be accessed by me on my PC or Plex clients on the home network with all the heavy lifting done by my PC.

The QNAP TR-004 looks like a solid option for the price but I have heard some negative comments about it surrounding wake time.

My use case is I’m a photographer so I intend to store RAW images, some games and my Plex library.

Apologies if this bit of a lame question - but I’m looking to scan an old 4x6 photo. I’ve tried the usual suspects at Walgreens, FedEx, and Office Max but the scan quality to my email isn’t great. Does anyone have a recommendation where to get the highest quality for something like this?

If so, it's sad news...

That lawyer tried to argue for IA... but I felt back then this was a lost case.

I'm planning a trip, 1 to 2 years. I'm planning to sell or give away all my furniture and things I don't really cherish. That leaves me with a few personal mementos, my computer and my NAS. My local storage facility only offers a 5x5 unit that seems far excessive in size for these few things. And it's not climate controlled. Anyone have any suggestions on where I could store these for a year or two?

Some more detail. I know how to package everything to ensure they are safe from the elements. I thought about family and friends. There's not really anyone that would be willing to store my stuff for an indefinite amount of time. Not even my parents, I asked. My closest friend, 20+ years, who would have happily done it, recently passed away.

If anyone has any suggestions I would be very appreciative.

Probably get these questions alot, but we currently have an old ReadyNAS Ultra 4 at work that I want to replace with a newer one.

Ideally I want to have two of the same NAS. One at work and one at home and where I can schedule a weekly FTP backup of new/modified files from the work drive to the home drive. This is preferably to buying cloudstorage because that is expensive when youre talking terabytes.

Our old Ultra 4 does have support for the FTP backups so I reckon newer Netgear NAS has the same, are they any good?

so I'm waiting for two 18TB recertified drives to arrive soon which I want to check for badblocks before using them. I would like to speed things up and test both drives simultaneously.

today I started a testrun with 2 older 500GB drives I still have

Internal - WD Green 3.5" 500 GB 5400/min SATA 3Gb/s @ SATA2 3GB/s

External -WD Elements 2.5" 500 GB 5400/min USB 2.0 @ USB 3.0

both drives are neither empty nor full. The WD Green is NTFS formatted, while the Elements is ext4.

I booted up a linux live distro, checked GParted to check which dev/sd* to choose so I know I am selecting the correct drives.

then I started 2 terminal windows and started

sudo badblocks -s -v -n -f /dev/sdX

with the X standing for the corresponding drive. both jobs started approximately just seconds from one another and are currently running.

what is interesting is, that the external WD Elements USB2.0 seems to be double as fast as the WD Green SATA2. Is that normal? Has this something to do with the filesystem?

when I'm reading the specs correctly, SATA2 should be faster than USB2.0 no?

I will connect my new recertified drives to two SATA3 6Gb/s and will use badblocks -w (for destructive read/write) but can I expect same speeds on both drives?

Or am I doing something wrong here entirely and Linux cannot divide CPU/RAM and other resources evenly between two terminal instances by default? I maybe one badblocks process slowing the other one down?

Is that a thing? Can't find reference to it. Bought some used WD HC530 14TB drives and a couple had large values for this SMART parameter (as viewed in 2 separate utilities). Ran a short self-test on them and suddenly error rate shows 0 in all utilities....

I need upwards of 60tb of storage. I don't use a desktop I use a laptop instead. I hate using cloud storage as I like to access it whenever wherever and don't like to rely on internet.

I currently have a couple of portable hard drives with up to 16tb. But it's super noisy in my bedroom

Please someone help me out here. Was thinking of getting the 40tb Lacie 2big raid but it's really expensive and I'm not sure if it's really noisy? And also how it works. Do I just plug it in to my laptop and it's ready to go?

Any other recommendations? What is Nas storage? And how does it work? Would it be suitable for me?

I've been using WD My Passport external hard drives for years without any issues. I'm looking to buy several more for robust data storage. I noticed that both Sam’s Club and Best Buy offer the WD My Passport 5TB external hard drive. Sam’s Club's version is white.  Best Buy's version is black. However, the price difference is substantial:

Best Buy: WDBPKJ0050BBK-WESN (SKU: 6380848) - $130-145 USD

Sam's Club: WDBPKJ0050BWT-WESB (Item #990316310) - $90-100 USD

Sam’s Club’s best price is $40 less than Best Buy’s. Is there any difference in speed or throughput between these two? Are they exactly the same other than color, or am I missing something?

So I basically came to know I need to use a NAS for my purposes.

The ones I found on on newegg are this ssd one ASUSTOR FLASHSTOR 6 and this Synology 4 bay DS423+ . I am not confident on my choice. My intended use is a local file server (mostly small files, no media,~4TB max). However, I need backups/snapshots/incremental backups (honestly I am still confused how these work) at least twice a day, and keep these backups for about a week (If any small changes need to be done or accidental delete). Do any of these NAS offer such feature? Did I need to look for any different vendor? How much storage I need for backing up 4TB? Any suggestion is appreciated since I do not have any experience on NAS systems. Thanks
