Today I took note of the existence of the site serverpartdeals where they sell refurbished stuff with some good lineage. So, I'm thinking of importing 2x12TB+ NAS oriented HDDs like these: Seagate Exos 14TB ($129.99, Manufacturer Recertified) or Ultrastar 12TB ($109.99, Manufacturer Recertified).

One similar option from here brand-new - 14tb Seagate Exos. 2 of these is 80% more expensive than importing 2x12TB ultrastar $219.98 + shippment $60 + taxes $260 = $537 or R$2990. So, yeah…

My build is running with some cheap 480GB SSD that I have for months now because I can't convince myself of spending more than R$4000 (~$720) just on 2 HDDs...

The more affordable option considering GB/$ from here would be something like HD WD Red Plus, 8TB, 3.5", SATA - WD80EFPX (~$110) or HD WD Red Plus, 4TB, 5400 RPM, 3.5', SATA - WD40EFPX WD (14) (~$192). Which it's not cheap (considering these 2 options as mid-tierish), but a lot more affordable than the HDDs of 10TB+ from here.

What do you guys think, go to the more lower-end 4TB-8TB that I can encounter from here (without losing a leg)? Or, try to import a higher tier refurbished one paying less than a brand-new equivalent from Brazil?

The bulk of my storage usage will be for movies and musics (~3.5TB now) that I have sitting on my computer. In the future, I pretend to use the NAS to storage photos and videos too. So I'm thinking that ~8TB of available storage is a good start.

Hi all, hope you can help. I have about 700GB of photos and files on a Seagate external drive. I only use it a few times a year to back up my photos and files from my laptop. It still works after 10 years but I am worried it may start loosing data as it's been a long time. I'm trying to copy it all onto my Google Drive, but it's taking hours, it's extremely slow. I'm trying to do the transfer folder by folder instead of everything in one go. Does anyone know if there's any way of transferring it faster? Would it be more beneficial or faster to buy a new external drive and transfer the files onto it first? Thanks in advance.

So I have this issue were my client wants to be able to save his shorts with his iPhone.

Somehow when exporting to H264 it doesn’t work, I’ve done plenty of tests, there’s two ways it’s working.

Exporting H265

Or

Exporting ProRes full quality then compressing it to h264 with handbrake.

What would be the ideal regarding the quality/ file size if the clients wants to post mostly (ig, tiktok, fb)?

So, there are a few dead sites I read on IA semi-regularly. The original's been dead over a decade. With the Internet Archive's loss, I have obvious concerns.

How would I scrape that site from the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, for a local copy? I've used HTTrack before, but it fails when I try it on an Wayback Machine backup.

Any tips?

I'm interested in creating local backups of my cloud storage, in case something happens to my cloud account. However, when I try to search about this, all that comes up are posts about people backing up to the cloud, which is not what I want.

Does anyone have any advice or a good working model? I'm thinking of just setting up a mini PC that is logged into my cloud storage, that has a scheduled task that copies files to a external hard drive, which I periodically swap out.

Edited to add:

I’m using OneDrive as my cloud provider.

Hope this fits within the rules/intent of DataHoarder, though it's a bit different than the normal hoarding efforts I see here. Basically, a website I've been a member of for twenty years is in danger of shutting down. The current person who runs it can no longer do so, so we are in search of a new owner. The website is compliant with any takedowns it receives and respects artists' wishes in that respect. It focuses on the sharing of commercially unavailable musical performances.

I asked on the site their thoughts on reaching out here, I'm trying to be a bit discreet, but can share more info on anyone interested.

C++, PHP, and vBulletin seem to be the top technologies used for the site.

So basically, with BID queue manager, you can batch download images from urls. However, what I'm trying to do is go through these urls but instead of downloading the images, I want to simply download or save the direct url links to these images to a text file because I'll need to modify the urls in order to get these images in the original size. If I simply batch download the images as is, they aren't as large as I'd like them to be. Has anyone else attempted this using BID or another software?

Basically I have one page and each page has about 4 images per page and I just want to mass grab the direct image url links instead because there are a lot of these pages and it be a pain to go through each one manually.

I'm also open to suggestions to other methods

It seems there's no single source of info for the DS4246 disk shelves, mine just got delivered with two PSUs and two IOM6's but it's not deployed yet as I'm waiting on other cables and a bracket first.

However since then I've read that NetApp suggests all four PSUs present, just for the fans and airflow, when 24 drive trays are loaded?

Also, with only two PSUs, would modding the PSUs to 1800rpm Noctua fans be unwise?

Hello all, I am extremely fresh to this world so I really have no clue what I’m talking about.

That being said, I want to create an archive of news stories off of a search result page. I work as a reporter now and would like to archive every story that I wrote before I leave, and before I lose access to the (paywalled) news site.

Since I don’t know where to start I’d love any pointers (big or small) on this kind of archiving.

Hey all, I am using a 5-bay enclosure as a DAS and mirroring it to a NAS. I would like to build a RAID 5 volume on the DAS with three 14TB disks, but I would like to add two additional 14 TB disks when money allows. Is this possible, similar to what I can do with the Synology NAS in adding drives? Or am I locked into what volume I can build now?

Hi all, I just installed Czkawka  and it will find dups if based on size, but nothing else. I've tried Hash and the 3 settings for it but it doesn't find dups. If I run free Duplicate photo cleaner, it finds 2k of dups. Not sure if I;m missing anything, seemed pretty straight forward. Any help would be great.

Thanks

Pretty much the title.

Did you start just with small backups to be safer from driver failures? Did you just wanna keep all your data yourself? Or was it for another reason?

Just wondering how people got started, especially people with 100s of TBs of data now.

Hi, Datahoards. Long time lurker first time posted.

As the title states I have an HDD that keeps connecting and disconnecting.

The trouble started two days ago when an HDD hooked up to my USB drive dock (Sabrent) just up and died on me and I smelled smoke coming from the power port of it as it died while trying to make a backup of new data to it.

One failed replacement dock that was DOA later and get another one that works and when I try to connect to it the drive keeps connecting and disconnecting repeatedly to the point where sometimes I can see the drive show up and then just blip out of existence.

Before anyone asks, I have three drives so this one being beyond recovery is more of an annoyance rather than a tragedy (and I know it’s the drive, not the new dock because the other two remaining drives work just fine). I just wanted to know if there’s something I could possibly do to attempt to make the drive workable again or if I should just destroy it and try to get a new one ASAP to replace the non functional third one.

In case it is of any consequence, my system is Windows 10 and I use an MSI GP66 Leopard laptop.

EDIT: I'm a little stretched at the moment so I'm getting a replacement drive that's factory refurbished. Though I'd still like to know if making this one operational is possible.

I have recently purchase 2 Seagate drives from different places. One arrived with the front stick as a NAS Drive. The other doesn't indicate NAS.

However both have the same model # of ST12000VN0008

But different Firmware #: SC60 vs SC61

I am unable to find any information on the difference between these 2.. or even if there is.. other than the firmware. Reaching out to see if anyone has experience or insight on this...

I come from r/Piracy . Everyone there always complains that many sites are being taken down by big corps that want their last nickel. Now they are going after something that both communities value a lot, TIA. We are witnessing the burning of Alexandria's library on a much MUCH bigger scale.

So much knowledge, for free, for absolutely everyone with internet access.

The best libraries in history pale in comparison. There is SO much potential...

This is a fucking crime.

But I don't see people brainstorming ideas to try and do something about it.

As I understand there's around 212pb of data in TIA.

I'm not a tech guy, so forgive me if this proposition or idea sounds stupid.

We are 1.8M users in the Piracy sub, you have 772K, and I assume many more outside of it that value the internet archive.

Would it be possible that each user downloads a small portion of it, and then uploads it as a torrent in a P2P way, or maybe distribute it among lets say, 3000 different sites, each one with a name that references it's position, like TIAsiteone.com for the first 1000 tera or whatever. Just throwing numbers randomly. It would be difficult to organize. I think thats the main problem. But if we just keep throwing and refining ideas we may be capable of doing something.

I ask here because I assume there's a crossover.. I took the shot.

You have the storage capacity, we users and I suppose the hosting side of it.

Hey folks,

Just wanting to dip into the swarm wisdom here on which of the option is better:

My Current Setup & use case: 15 year old Qnap 4bay NAS 8tbx5 with raid5, plus a 5 year old thinkpad laptop, both hardwired into the router. My primary use cases are simply Plex, local and remote streaming, all the relevant arrs and backups for photos (I do photography). the space is running low at the moment plus i want to expand

Upgrade Option 1: Build a N100 based dedicated 8 bay NAS. move everything from windows to TrueNAS Scale. chuck in 4x20tb in addition to the 4x8tb i have, so should work for a while.

Upside being the new intel chipset graphic part can handle transcoding better, so the remote streaming is easier. Current set up choke on pretty much any transcoding on 4k level. I get to learn thing by moving to a docker/plug-in world from windows, and the setup seems to have upgrade flexibility. Downside being it is pretty expensive, these cases, if you want it to look half-decent only takes SFX power supplier, which is very expensive for some reason in Europe where I live.

Upgrade option 2: buy a beelink n100 mini PC, plug a 10gb USBC DAS with 8 bays in it and run software raid through TureNAS Scale. the tradeoffs compares to option 1 is really just its much easier to setup, cheaper but you give up upgradability because you have a miniPC and that's about it.

Would any of you folks have a view on how I should think about these two options in terms of pros and cons, is my approach logical and sensible?

PS. I am a bit confused about the the throughput on various components here. so we have 2.5g lan ports, PCIE 3 x4 and x1 slots of NVME in the option 1 for both cache for TrueNAS and another one for sata expander which i would need to attach 8 drives, all drives will be spinning disks with parity 1 setup (pls tell me if this is silly and parity 2 is a much), and then you have the 10gb USB 3 gen 2 on the DAS. Is the bottle neck here the spinning disks read and write? Speed is not that important just want to understand, since I only need it to do PLEX and that at most is still less than gigabit lan.

Much appreciated in advance for any thoughts and inputs from you folks.

I have some footage recorded by a JVC GR-FXM170A which I am trying to convert to digital by using OBS. I used this capture card to connect the camera to the PC but nothing showed up in OBS. I don't know where the original cable is but I used a cable like this. Then I connected the camera to a TV using the same cable and the footage played without a problem on the TV. I thought maybe the capture card was broken so I used both the same cable and a cable like this to connect a satellite receiver to the PC and the footage played in OBS both times. Does anybody knows where the problem is and how I can fix it?
