Hello everyone.

Please be so kind and help me in the following matter, given the following:

  • I am currently looking for a RELIABLE 2.5 drive for general-archiving purposes. .. i.e., from time to time, when the local (laptop) drive is full, than I'd like to archive is some data from it (pictures, docs, etc) to that HDD. The rest of the time, the respective drive would be kept in a safe storage.
  • I am considering both an external drive or a "barebones" drive that I would keep in an aluminum hdd rack
  • I am willing to consider allocating an extra budget for the drive itself, but stuff like NAS and RAID and etc are out of the question for me.
  • Also, as I am based in the EU, and here (at lease in my country) prices for "more modern storage" solutions such as larger-size SSDs or NVMEs etc. are a bit prohibitive, so I have to narrow down my choices between options such as (an these are ONLY some examples I am giving you to see the choices I am faced with): Seagate Expansion Portable, HDD WD Red Plus, HDD WD purple, Seagate exapansion desktop, hdd seagate iron wolf pro, toshipa P300 hdd etc etc etc.
  • I specifically mentioned the 4TB capacity because this would be the ideal size. for me...meaning it will probably be more than enough for ALL future data-storing needs. 4TB is ideal for me as a less capacity would not fit my use case while a larger one would be an overkill.

I know that especially older-type drives are more inclined to having issues compared to modern SSDs/NVMEs etc, but I was hoping maybe you guys can recommend a decent enough solution for my use case.

THANK YOU!

I've got a few multi-drive towers with only eSATA interfaces. I'd like to connect them to a NAS that has USB 3.0 interfaces. I know eSATA has fallen out of favor these days. Are there any USB to SATA/eSATA interfaces that support the SATA multipliers built into these towers? So far I've only found PCIe cards that will do it.

Looking to set up a drive off site in climate controlled area should the drive be bagged with desiccant?

So with Redbox's parent company filing for bankruptcy, what are the odds we could pick up one of their kiosk machines to have a disk changer at home? Would be interesting to see how much of one of those was actual storage.

Just thinking out loud since I just saw one.

I've been thinking about buying a NAS for a long time. My requirements are that I will be streaming on three different devices simultaneously and also want to use it as storage for my files and may be two VM's. So today, to make this happen, I started researching NAS and everything related to them. I found out that Synology is one of the major players in the NAS market. However, when I checked the specs, I was surprised to see that it was still using a Zen 1 processor (AMD Ryzen V1500B) for a price of $3000. The more I researched, the more I realized that I can build my own custom NAS.

What would be the better decision for me: a prebuilt NAS or a DIY build? I also found out that the latest AMD V3000 processors (7000 series) are cutting-edge. I was considering using an AMD Ryzen gaming CPU like the 7900. What are the drawbacks of using a gaming CPU and motherboard over the traditional CPU/motherboard setup?

Please provide suggestions for both budget and high-end system.

I have a lot of questions, and I'd be grateful if you could help me narrow down my choices.

Thank you

Hey all,

I've always been aware that external drives can fail, but I always thought it would be due to overuse, or poor storage, or something. But apparently no, even if you haven't touched an external drive and kept it safe in its original box for years, it could still just... fail, and lose all its data. That's a terrifying thought, as I have a bunch of old backup drives from school where I've been storing irreplaceable data from my family and my childhood and now I'm afraid to even check them. Not to mention, my current machine has paltry internal storage and I've been running off an external drive for years, and already feeling the need to go larger than the 4 TB I currently use.

What are the best ways to have a solid, trustworthy backup of old data that aren't cloud based? And considering SSDs are still very expensive and don't reach the storage heights of disk based drives, what's the best option?

EDIT: What are the rates at which external drives fail? Should I get one mega drive to consolidate all my old drives, and replace it every 5 years or something?

What are the chances they still work? They were originally in a static proof bag but fell out and were just loose in the box. They are 1tb drives so I would love to put them to use but don’t want to mess with it (because I’ll get stuck troubleshooting for who knows how long) if there’s not a decent chance they will still work.

What you guys think?

I found a game I used to play when I was younger (in Flash Player).

Now this game has been converted to an HTML5 game, but I'm not able to save it in any way. Saving the page won't load the game properly. Does anyone know a way to actually "store" the game on my hard drive and let it work without Internet connection?

For anyone wondering, this is the game in question: https://cdn2.addictinggames.com/addictinggames-content/ag-assets/content-items/html5-games/tailspin/index.html

I took a risk and bought a Seagate 16tb Exos for £150 for CEX. Did a health scan and it's only got 48 lifetime hours on it and everything else looks good.

Worth noting that all items from CEX have a 2 year warranty, so think that's a pretty good deal and must have got lucky.

Urgent: How do I backup a large bulk of data files from a mapped Network drive (SharePoint) in a short amount of time? I have about one day to copy all of my work I did in past 2 years prior to leaving the job, since my manager wouldn’t allow me to do that next week. This is close to 1TB of data located on a local network drive.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I've just found out that you can "backup" Bitlocker metadata https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/windows-commands/manage-bde-keypackage

Do you backup your partition tables like http://mbrwizard.com/?

What else do you do?

Is this the way to verify an HD? I have 3x drives I bought from goharddrive I need to test. They are

Ultrastar DC HC520 12TB SATA 6Gb 256MB 3.5"

I watched some videos on CrystalDiskInfo and it only displays info. What tools are best for doing a full read/write/verify and Fill drive? I am using vmware to run Windows 10 and I was going to install Ubuntu or linux.

  • Run CrystalDiskInfo
  • Full format in Windows
  • Run CrystalDiskInfo
  • Do a full read/write/verify (badblocks -wsv -b 4096 /dev/sda)?
  • Run CrystalDiskInfo
  • Quick format in Windows
  • Run CrystalDiskInfo
  • Fill drive (cat /dev/zero > /dev/device)?

I am planning to test the hard drives using vmware since I have a macbook. Would there be significant difference in using a USB C or a USB B connection? I figure 12TB is going to take a long time so I am planning on buying a 2 bay SATA enclosure which provides power to test these drive with so I can test two drives at the same time. I only have USB C on my laptop.

Hi,

A few months ago I was planning to buy a MD1200 and connect it to a PC with a LSI SAS9200-8e type card (I understand that it would need additional cooling in a PC case).

Since I last looked, the reputable seller that I was going to buy from (at about £120 with 3 year warranty) no longer stocks them, and I'm struggling to find a reputable seller for less than £300, so I would like to have another look at possibilities.

I had intended to use SATA drives, but now think that I might just go with second hand 10TB SAS drives.

I see SA120s mentioned a lot, and wondered if they would work in the same way as I planned to use the MD1200.

The seller I mentioned, also sells HP D2700 for about £100, and D3700 for about £300. Are they workable and any good (and how would a D3700 compare to a MD1200).

I'm only planning to use it for backups, and maybe only running for a short period each day, but also potentially 24/7 depending upon power usage.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Hello everyone,

I have several external hard drives with a total capacity of approximately 10-12 TB, accumulated over 10 years of work. The actual total data size is not that much because years ago, I accidentally duplicated files on the same drive. This means there might be 2, 3, or even more copies of the same file. Instead of creating a librarian-like system when I first saved my data, I opened random folders and saved my files in random directories. Now, I deeply regret not having organized it properly. Since I didn't create an organization, I don't know where each piece of data is. Sometimes when I need this data, I either try to find it by browsing through folders one by one or use the search bar if I know the file name. However, since the disks are classic HDDs, sometimes it takes hours to search.

I have a few questions I'd like to ask. I would be very happy if you could guide me.

  1. How can I easily resolve the disorganization on my disks?
  2. How can I create an example archive structure? How should I name folders and files, etc.?
  3. I have a backup plan that I’d like to discuss. Do you think it’s reasonable, or do you have any recommendations?

Plan:

  • Save the existing data to a new drive. (If you have recommendations for a 2.5" external drive, I’m open to suggestions.)
  • Backup the data on the new drive to another drive.
  • Sync the data on the new drive with OneDrive and Dropbox.
  • Separate the organized drive and save new incoming data to it.
  • Periodically transfer data to the other drive and cloud storage accounts.
  1. How can I synchronize the drive I plan to carry with me continuously with other drives and cloud storage accounts?

These are the issues I am currently trying to solve. Thank you for your help.

This is my first redundant drive system. Started with 8tb x2 Barracudas, adding my first parity using SnapRaid and a 12tb Ironwolf, I've replaced one 8tb with a 12tb Ironwolf, now looking at replacing the remaining 8tb. Looking at prices the 20tb Ironwolf is now $360 at $18/tb vs the 12tb for $240 at $20/tb, so only a $40 tax for higher capacity. Is that higher capacity tax to high and just wait for it to drop further? In theory I could replace that 8tb data with a 20tb and not worry about upping the parity until I reach that 12tb (or technically 10.9tb), right? Some would probably say just keep adding more 12tb as needed, I do have the space for 18 drives in theory (mb supports 6, would have to get an add on card, this is actually one thing I would like to avoid) but how many of you started small then reached capacity and said well shit should have started using higher capacity drives x years ago? Thanks.

PS: any widows guys now how to reduce that difference the 12tb vs 10.9tb, is that the mbr/gpt reserve, seems like wasted space for small amount of files for a media server.

To my suprise some data I was looking for has been uploaded to the archive (~36GB), I am currently downloading it, taking around 2 days to complete.

Usually I just pick a torrent, but the option was sadly not available.

Is using IDM or alternatives my best bet in the situation?

Hello,

I just ordered a wd my book 22to and a Seagate expansion 20to

At the shuck,

I had in the wd a white label reference wd220edgz /iuha570 R / n us7sat220. It would be a reformed ultrastar., it is indeed at 120 hz so 7200 rpm

In the seagate, an ironwolf pro badged

The comparative tests are attached

A priori the seagate is much better especially on random writing

It is to make a raid 5 qnap video files for Emby

According to you, do I favor performance or storage? Will the performance of the wd be sufficient in raid 5 for an Emby server?

Thanks

Hello. I got a link with .mp4 video in Dropover. When I download it I get a file with not certain format. In file properties I see only "file" definition. I need to convert it to any readable file for presentation apps. I tries Capcut, Premiere, Movavi. They can't accept this format. How is it possible to do?

I recently purchased this enclosure to add additional drives to my server, but a common complaint I hear is about high temps. I have seen solutions involving replacing the rear fan and adding an additional one to the front via double-sided tape.

I'm planning to go to the route of replacing the rear fan and adding an additional one, but I'm wondering if anyone here has personal experience with changing the fan out on this enclosure and connecting a second. For connections, all I can see is a small two pin connector for the rear fan.
