Don't worry, this is not one of those mandatory annual "Best cloud storage for porn" posts. More like I still don't get why half the people warn against trusting a cloud storage providers with your porn collection because they regularly update their naughty/nice lists and ban accounts for life. But then there's the other half which says "I've been a subscriber of pCloud for the last 10 years I store everything from Nazi propaganda to bestiality and I've never had so much as down time".

But both are contradictory, so do you have any hypothesis?

My personal experience - I've had a lifetime plan from pCloud from oh, I don't know... I think 2018? I store all of my porn there, all 221GB of it and believe me when I say I don't own the rights to a single video. I've never had a single file deleted let alone a banned account. But here's the thing. I'm afraid it might happen, so that's why I wish someone would enlighten me on the internal pipelines of some of the popular providers.

My hypothesis is that only some accounts get banned because 1) someone reported them 2) they see a lot of outbound traffic from said account 3) random checks. 1) and 2) I avoid easily, I just keep my porn to myself, no one has asked me for it anyway, but 3) seems a little too lucky to avoid for so long.

So... any ideas?

Hello all

I've recently grabbed a supermicro DAS which uses the sas2 classic sff-8088. I have a spare HBA with internal SFF-8643. Getting a cable that goes internal to 8088 is a pain in the butt.

Is there actually any REAL difference in the 8643->44? Can it be technically connected to the HBA directly? It's a lot easier to find 8644 to 8088 cables.

I've also been looking at just grabbing two 9207's instead but shipping will take weeks from eBay :(

I have a couple external Hard Drives that I periodically use for backups every few months or so. My question is - is an HDD's lifespan directly affected correlated to how much they are in use, or do they die out at about the same rate even if they are not powered on for the majority of the time? For example, is 5 years of sitting without being powered up long enough for the lubricants to start to migrate out of the bearings? I dont want to not be able to spin the drives up if it sits on a shelf for too long.

I’m am preparing to build my first own NAS-Server and would like it to have double redundancy, as in that two of the four Drives can fail before Data loss occurs. When reading up on ZFS, i learned that one drive can be considered a spare, which means that upon a drive failing, the spare will automatically replace it until you replaced the fail drive. So technically you can also survive 2 Drive fails just like with Raidz2. The capacity would be the same either way. Based on what i read i would say the advantages are as follows: Raidz1 + Spare: The spare would be inactive most of the time, leading to a longer life and consequently a lower likelihood of two drives failing at the same time. Raidz2: More speed. Is that about correct ? Or are there other advantages/disadvantages?

My S22 Ultra became pretty much useless all of a sudden and I've been looking for something reliable to backup all data and switch phones to any non samsung alternative.

What I tried:

myphoneexplorer (constantly stops working, disconnects phone from pc, time outs)

syncthing (didn't work)

straight up copying from storage to pc (didn't work)

onedrive/onesync (anythig that requires wifi or mobile won't work because the phone goes into a bootloop as soon as I try to switch it on).

All of the cables and ports have been checked, everything works.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hello,

Given the numerous articles discussing the potential shutdown of WayBackMachine and Archive.org, including their own post on the topic (https://blog.archive.org/2023/03/25/the-fight-continues/),

I was wondering if there is any way or location to download the complete data as a backup, just in case I might need it in the future.

Thank you in advance!

Don't know if it fits here, but I think yes. It's little bit the opposite of hoarding. I'm a master of hoarding links which "can by useful in future!" And yes, I found a lot of useful, forgotten links which I neatly organized yesterday, finally (1k of them), but I also discovered how many useless ones I have saved. And how many doesn't work anymore. (Note to myself: save really interesting topics and useful articles, they will be go sooner then you think).

So I went through all my "knowledge database links", open one by one - especially after I realized that even articles on National Geografic are not there anymore, save them to the correct spot in Obsidian if still useful and interesting, noted them - what it is, why I save it.

But then... I just deleted all the pretty folders. I deleted all the shitty articles of random webpages. And I feel so great now. It's clean, it's organized, and ready for new system, where I will be more organized at the first place and save them with some thinking, not just by the rule "save them all!"

Fresh new start before big life changes. Amazing!

Genuinely curious what is actually in a driveless NAS that could make it worth $2500-10000, when you can put $20 SATA expansion cards inside basically any gaming pc case, and get a full tower case for under $200.

For $1200 or less, you can buy a rig with a good power supply that does any level of RAID, can accommodate a dozen or so drives internally, has a gigabit Ethernet port, probably has better cooling than the NAS unit, has integrated graphics to run a 1920x1080 display just fine…

What am I missing? Why are these things priced like they have advanced NVIDIA AI hardware in them or something?

I am looking to purchase a couple refurbished Ultrastar HC520 12TB hard drives from goHardDrive and I was just wondering what is the difference between the few model numbers they have for sale?

HUH721212ALE600 HUH721212ALE601 HUH721212ALE604

Thanks!

I purchased four WD DC HC520 12 TB drives from ServerPartDeals. They arrived today, so I put all four into my SUPERMICRO SYS-530A-IL Workstation. When I boot and look in the BIOS, none of them are recognized, and I can't feel any vibration from the drives—they aren't spinning at all.

I removed the drives and installed a WD DC HA210 2 TB drive I had. It spun up fine, and the BIOS saw it. I was able to do a test install on that drive, and everything worked fine. I removed the 2 TB, plugged the same cables into one of the 12 TB drives, and powered it on. Still nothing—the drive still felt dead.

This is my first time purchasing from ServerPartDeals. Everything I read on this forum and online sounded very positive. Is it possible that I received four dead drives?

Is there something else I should try, or should I start an RMA and get drives somewhere else?

I am wondering if the HBAs will get hotter when there are more HDDs connected to them

E.g. if you use a HBA for only 2 SATA HDDs, it should run cooler than the same HBA in the same setup running at max capacity of 8 SATA HDDs right?

I was trying to save some space by converting, on my iPhone via shortcuts, all my jpeg images to heif. my first batch of 5 photos look good, indistinguishable image quality but about half the space for heif. however for some reason the metadata time is shifted by 3 hours. original was image taken in Hawaii at 4:44 and the heif image says 7:44. anyone experience this?

I'm running Snapraid with dual parity (18tbx2) and five data drives (also 18tb each)

So last time one of my drives was warrantied I decided to keep one 18tb it in the closet as a spare for when I lose any data drive or parity drive since my largest drive is 18tb. It's currently empty, and has only been hooked up to test.

I was thinking today, should I at the very least have some data on that drive even though it's unplugged and in my closet? My idea is to wipe it when I need to replace a drive I my array, but is it safe to put data on the drive and leave it unplugged and boxed up in my closet?

Hi folks. I'm trying to determine the most cost effective way to purchase a tape library with at least one LTO-6 drive, preferably fiber channel. I have a couple of questions regarding Dell/IBM libraries/chassis (TL2000, TL4000, ML6000):

  • Is there any way to use a full height LTO-6 IBM drive in a TL2000/4000? I heard that there's some support for either LTO-2 or LTO-3 full height drives, however the pictures I've seen of these don't look quite like the IBM LTO-6 drives.
  • Does anybody have any idea how much power a ML6000 draws at idle? Along these lines, would it be reasonable to keep the library powered off outside of a weekly backup job (along with any time a restore is needed)?
  • Will all IBM drives work in Dell libraries (with matching form factor), or only specific part numbers and firmware versions?
  • Do I need any proprietary software to run these on Linux, or can I just use mt/mtx?

Does anybody have a recommendation on how I should build a LTO-6 library?

I did some analysis of drive value per TB, adjusting for drive reliability based on the data from Backblaze. The data isn't perfect, but I like the results better than a strict $/TB analysis.

Recently picked up an Asustor 5402T with 4 M.2 slots and 2 3.5" drive bays. My current plan is to fill up the M.2 slots first, then see if I need HDDs for long-term backups. I would prefer an all-SSD setup as the NAS will sit in my bedroom though.

Only looking to host a Jellyfin server for videos/music, so is it correct to assume that endurance won't be a major issue as I'll be reading 99% of the time? If so, would a cheaper M.2 like the P3 Plus serve my needs just fine?

Thanks!

Hey Everyone,

My family has accumulated a large amount of family photos and videos from trips and other important dates and events. We need to get a backup drive as currently it is only on an actively used computer (I am the most paranoid about this out of my family). My questions is, would it be better to get an SSD or and HDD for long term storage of these things? My concern about an HDD is the durability if dropped, but my concern with an ssd is the longevity of flash memory if not powered on so frequently.

Any help/advice is appreciated!

I currently have many different locations with Synology DS1819+ NASs with DX517s. It is getting harder to find this model and I really don't care for the new ones where you have to hack them to be able to use non-Synology drives. I need to setup another site with 200TBs of storage or more. I need to be able to sync the data between this site with all the others - which makes doing another Synology easier to setup/use.

I am a bit put off by Synology's dated hardware too. I do not use this device for anything other than file storage though. I can build an Unraid server with better hardware than the Synology systems for a lower price too.

Would you just put in another Synology because the ease of setting it up and its integration into the current infrastructure or would you build an Unraid server and figure out some way to sync files between it and the Synology NASs? I can do either one and just want your opinions.

I don’t work with hardware much and am looking for a new laptop that would serve as a basic home CPU while also ripping DVDs to a server. I’ve found very little info on this, which make me think the CPU itself isn’t a huge deal, but that doesn’t seem right.

Open to any and all recommendations. Thanks!
