Hello All,

New to this sub. I'm trying to figure out a solution for now.

My NAS has been fine for months. Disk drives show no errors.

Disk are 4xMDD 14TB Model Number OOS14000G.

Data size is about 22TB

My raid didn't come up after I did a shutdown. I opened a ticket with QNAP and they had to force the array back up. I can see data. Lots of it is junk data, but data I love. They sent me the drive compatibility list and shame on me for not even thinking about checking or looking for one. But the drive sizes are smaller in comparison to what is available today.

My thoughts are the following:

  • Buy a new NAS that can use the MDD disks.
    • Looking at Synology 4 Bay need to verity compatibility.
  • Purchase Cloud Storage somewhere.
  • Buy an external usb drive enclosure and use RAID0, nervous on this one.

Since I don't have a place to put data, I'm thinking of using a cloud service to host the data as a temp spot.

I do have Gig up and down so that will take time, but as long as it is done during the month I can cancel.

I'm interested in checking only certain parts of a disk. It seems like most of the software either tests the whole disk, or tests from the beginning up to a certain number of bytes you specify. Is there anything that lets you test an arbitrary, user-selectable beginning to end? Windows preferred, if possible.

Hi all,

I recently got my hands on a Dell PowerEdge R720 with 8 * 3.5" HDD slots and a PERC H710 RAID controller. I am planning on putting in 8 6TB HDDs as I had 5 fairly young 6TB drives laying around and have 3 more on the way.

I would like to make use of the RAID controller as I have only ever used MDADM for RAID so this is something quite new to me. I have spent some time so far playing around with it however when the rest of the drives arrive I would like to set it up for proper usage.

I was wondering what you guys would do with this hardware yourselves? I understand people have very different needs so the answers could vary quite a bit but I just wanted to hear some ideas/opinions if that's okay :)

Hi there, I'm looking for a cloud service to store important and sensitive documents. I'm scanning all my documents and saving them digitally. I have an external Drive where I store them, but I need a second place as a backup.

I don't need much space since I'm just saving some pdf files.

I've seen suggestions like Mega, pcloud and sync.

Ideally something I can access via browser or apps (android and iOS)

What would you use in my situation?

Im about to purchase some drives to setup my first NAS, and I found these on newegg. However they seem really cheap for 14TB, and i dont see that it says refurbished anywhere. Does anyone have any experience with GoHardDrive on newegg? im looking to spend less then $400 if you have any better deals or recommendations let me know. https://www.newegg.com/p/1Z4-06MR-00017?Item=9SIA5ADKB31750

Hello, I have just used a book2net scanner at my library to scan some books. What I want to do is split each scan (which is a scan of 2 pages) to 2 separate ones. Also it would be nice to have an editor to rotate (some pages were scanned at a slight angle), contrast, crop, etc. Is there any software for this kind of stuff? Thanks in advance!

Is there any difference in boot times or longevity for an hmb nvme vs a dram cache nvme as boot drive?

My original post on r/techsupport: https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/s/SCCKnGaleU

Hi everyone! I recently bought 3 refurbished hard drives I'll be using for a server. I started creating the server the other day from scratch on my old PC. None of the three drives are being detected by the BIOS or Windows. Up until two days ago I was using the PSU and the SATA SSD that the computer is booting off of in my main computer so I know they both work and the SATA power cable is not faulty. The SATA cables themselves I also know are not faulty. I've tried with and without the SATA power adapters/extenders the drives came with. I've tried I think everything in the BIOS including CSM and Legacy support just in case that would've helped. At first I thought the drives were at least powering on, but after reading some more I think I was hearing an auxiliary component so they aren't getting power. I removed the 3.3v wire from my SATA power connector because I saw tons of people having the 3.3v issue with a ton of fixes and that was the easiest for me, but still nothing. It's hard to believe that all three of these drives would be dead, but that's the only option I've been left with unless my PSU "can't" power them for some reason. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have several folders with categorized images and videos sometimes extending to the thousands. And I'd like to either use several images for drawing refs or simply observe them in random order. I didn't know if there was an existing software to read my folders and display the contents in random order or even in groups.

They said there is an electrical damage to the read/write head within the internal hard drive. Slight scratches found on the platter due to misaligned head scratching its surface due to continued power up. They said they needed to perform a head and platter swap within the hard disk to recover the data AND THEY ARE CHARGING ME $1,370 FOR A $150 DRIVE ?!

Why are they charging so much ???

Literally heard 20 minutes ago that the internet archive "lost in court" from my little sister and the IA is being taken down. Is this true?

I've been a small data hoarder for a few years now that's been using a 4TB and 16TB HDD for external storage using a USB-adapter. They've served me well, but it's time to step up to an actual dedicated device. I'm struggling to choose between a regular NAS, a DIY NAS, and a mini pc + DAS.

My highest priority is low power consumption, followed by silent operation. Because of this, I decided to stick to 4-bay solutions. I'm planning to use 4x16TB in (software) RAID 5 (using the 16TB Exos I already have), possibly with an SSD cache. If I am a bit picky in what I opt to store, this should last me a few years. Use case is mostly media and file storage, torrenting, and Plex. Occasionally I'll move large files between the storage device and my main pc. Uptime will be roughly 50%. I've outlined my plans for all 3 options, which all come to about €400ish.

Regular NAS: The simplest solution. The lack of effort required to set this up and maintain is certainly appealing. However it is also the most limited platform with the least amount of choice. At around €400 my best options seem to be Synology DS423, QNAP TS-433, and TerraMaster F4-423. I've used this comparison to conclude that the TS-433 seems to be the best fit, mainly due to its very low power consumption.

DIY NAS: I've watched a bunch of NAScompare videos, so it should not be surprising that the Jonsbo N2 is my first choice. I'm planning to use a motherboard with an integrated N100. I'd also swap out the fan for a better one, because apparently it's a bit loud.

Mini pc + DAS: There's a bunch of decent mini pc's with an N100 and 16GB RAM available on aliexpress for €150ish. I'd probably go for the Firebat T8 Pro Plus. The search for a DAS is troublesome. So many options, most of which are from brands I don't recognize. The safest choice I could find is a QNAP TR-004 for €200. There are many much cheaper alternatives, but I have no idea how reliable those products are.

Overall, I lean slightly towards a DIY NAS or a mini pc. I really like the idea of having a separate second Windows pc dedicated to torrenting and storage, which I would manage using remote desktop. I'd rather not use linux or any other alternative OS, unless you believe there are tremendous benefits.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. I have very little knowledge of the software required to maintain a disk array, which makes it harder for me to make sense of it all. I'd be willing to increase my budget somewhat if you believe there is an ideal solution for me.

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice on buying a high-volume printer/scanner for a personal project. I need to digitize thousands of sheets from my late dad’s papers. I want something with a robust sheet feeder, ideally one that can handle hundreds of pages at once without jamming or misfeeding.

The goal is to launch the scan and let it run without having to babysit the process or double-check every scan for issues. Accuracy and reliability are key here.

If anyone has suggestions for models or brands that could handle this kind of volume, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I am a videographer in Canada and have accumulated multiple WD My Passport HDD's for my terabytes of footage. USB 3.2. I also have a few Lacie HDD's and a whole bunch of Samsung T7 shields, which I generally edit it off of.

I know nothing about RAID's or anything like that, so I've come to this sub hoping for guidance. I've spent probably thousands on storage at this point, so I'd like to re-use all these drives if possible. Is there some kind of enclosure I can put these drives into and have them all connected with one USB-C out? I work mostly off of an M3 Macbook Pro, but also use a PC as well.

Please help!

I have a number of external USB drives as well as probably every internal IDE hard drive rive from every computer I’ve had for the last 30 years. Lately I have been trying to collate all of that data into a single archive so that I can be more organized with it and not have so many drives sitting around. There is a lot of duplication across the drives that I am sifting through. But my main issue is that I can’t read some of the older IDE drives. Most of them are from Windows based machines going back to Win95. A few are from Linux machines. So they do have different file system structures on them. I mostly have Macs now but also have a laptop with Windows 7 on it that I can use to try to read the drives.

Some of the drives show up as being active when connected to a computer but I can’t get results on what is on any partitions. Even seeing how they are formatted doesn’t show up. Are there any tools available that will help do some forensics on these drives so that I can determine if it is still possible to get data off of them? Any recommendations for how to retrieve data from such old drives? Do current versions of MacOS or Windows even support reading from IDE drives that are more than 20 years old?

Basically, I have 2 SSDs from previous computers that I want to actually wipe and make useful. But I want to make sure I copy anything I might want to save before actually wiping it.

Is there a program that can highlight stuff that isn't part of Windows or another program? Just want to get advice before I go with my current plan to spend a few hours clicking around WinDirStat.

I want to collect a lot of data from many various sources (say scraping, saving some of the HTTP requests my browser makes, random files i got on the internet, db dumps, etc.) over a relatively long period of time and eventually process it somehow and actually do something useful with it. The problem I run into is I am not sure how to store it. Since I obviously have no clue about the schema ahead of time, using a typical RDBMS would be kind of problematic, I also have no clue which data is relevant since I don't know how I will want to process it in the future, which would further complicate a schemafull approach. I have considered Object Stores but since those are supposed to store files and a lot of this data probably wouldn't fit neatly into that, it also just seems kind of inconvenient? So far it seems the best idea would be using NATS JetStream and just pushing all the new data as messages to it to be processed at a later point. What do y'all think?

I was using a WD external hard drive as a PVR and it died. I can't find a replacement that's on AC power. Will this combo work? Am I missing anything?

Bell PVR requirements below. Thanks all!

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B07H2RR55Q/ref=ox_sc_act_image_2?smid=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&psc=1

The minimum requirements (Bell 6131 HD receivers) as follows:

• 7200 RPM rotation speed

• Between 50GB and 2TB of capacity

• Holds a single hard drive (enclosures holding two disks are not supported)

• Plugs into an AC power outlet

• Has a USB 2.0 connection

• Has no sleep mode (cannot power down when idle

Originally I was looking for the Fractal Define 7XL, but found a deal for a slightly used Corsair Obsidian 750D for $75. Currently using 9 drives. I can see myself adding a few more in the future, but just might end up increasing the size of some of my smaller drives. I know it's an older case, but are there any reasons why this would be a bad idea?

*To clarify this is NOT the airflow edition.
