Hi, just wondering, are there better backup software other than Duplicati? While it is great so far in the backing up and deduplication, I noticed that restoring from it is quite slow (1TB took 6 hours?); I am wondering if this is normal for such software or is it time for me to move on to something that works similar but faster

I would like to keep a digital diary of my personal life. This would mean frequent recordings, diary entries, educational articles (written for myself). I have concerns over the effort levels required to do such a thing e.g changing the text in a random file and remembering to log this in to some cloud storage.

How should I do this?

I'm putting together a playlist of ripped DVD ISO (.iso) files to auto-play in the background while I work.

However, when added to VLC, they're basically showing as nonsense:

https://preview.redd.it/gtz8cxgrhwod1.png?width=960&format=png&auto=webp&s=f57a4a0ac6e975b318fd667eafe69445be0118f6

When I right-click the title and select Information, it shows the Metadata box where the Title field matches the displayed Title in the playlist.

I know these come from the DVDs during rip (I use DVDShrink), though I don't know how the "x.iso" files were titled. I didn't do that. That may have come from me deleting or renaming the DVD_VIDEO title before rip, which DVDShrink may have mishandled.

What I'm not sure of how to fix this. I'm struggling to find out why the titles are uppercased on the DVDs (with underscores), and what character format or range I can use to display as properly as possible without breaking compatibility on something. I'm not even sure this is the best forum to post to, but I'll start here.

So my initial want when buying my JBOD and one 8TB HDD was to add to it as I either needed more storage, or have money to burn on more HDDs. Doing some researching it seems like that wont be possible to add to the pool without deleting the data on the drives that I am trying to pool. Does anyone know of a way I can add a drive to the pool without deleting any data?

I'd like to run a RAID 5 setup so I can recover from any loss.

I'm pretty new to this so any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve got some FLAC audio from my PC that I want to hold as physical media, but I need to see where to buy my CD-R discs. I was gonna go for Verbatim (looks like it’s sold at my Walmart) but I’ve seen conflicting opinions on the matter. So, what do you all think about this? Who’s doing this in 2024 and what are my options today? I’m aware of thumb sticks of course, but there‘s something special about a CD to me.

Rescued a mini pc from a store that was shutting down, it was marked as something wrong with the cpu, but turns out it just needed a drive swap. Now I have a dead WD nvme, any interesting or creative use for it. I've seen things like a cpu being repurposed as a keychain or something, or drive platters as coasters, anything similar for an nvme? If not, I'll just chuck it or bring it to a recycler.

hi guys,

i'm trying to download a video from the link at the bottom of this post which i've so far been unable to achieve. i have tried using extensions such as fetchv, right click and save as (grayed out), using inspect and finding m3u file has only come up with very small files which in no way work when downloaded, and video downloader sites.

if you know of an alternative method that you've tried that has worked, that would be amazing. the video seems embedded into the website itself and whenever video is played, it is broken down into .ts files which i'd rather not collect manually but instead have a one click downloaded file.

i would be grateful for any help.

EDIT: I was able to access pages with just the video source on its own but the same issues remained.

Looking to back up my 12tb of TV and 3 of movies but always hate manually copying files. Is there a program I could run that will do this for me?

Hi all, this might not quite be the right place for this question, but figured someone could correctly direct me elsewhere if needed

I'm looking for a photo viewing software kinda like what windows has built in already, but i want to be able to edit the photo name while i have it open viewing it. Like perhaps from a side bar in the application or something like that. It would need to be able to support TIFF as well which I assume is a fairly standard thing anyway?

I have a bunch of family photos I have scanned but do not know who everyone is. I want to be able to go through the photos with a family member that does know who they are and have them identity each person. As they tell me, I can type it into the file name then and there. Instead of closing the image, right clicking, rename the file etc. Go to the next ome, rinse and repeat.

Does such a thing exist at all, or if someone knows of anything similar to achieve what I want to do. Maybe if there is a way I can create notes that are bound to them. But being able to do it while i am viewing the picture is key here

Thanks

Is there a certain kind? I have a few CD/DVD readers that I’ve ripped from old towers. As for the discs, I have no idea what I should do for my FLAC files. Any suggestions for what I should buy? I always like the idea.

Currently at a jazz festival and didn't realize it was being broadcast on YouTube till after I left home. Would love to save a recording of it, if anyone is willing to grab it for me? The artist I came to see is from about 6:00-7:45pm.

Sorry if this is the wrong place. My wife is a wedding photographer and videographer and I’ve noticed that over the past year we’ve paid over $150 just for 2tb of storage on Dropbox. Wondering what yall would recommend that she can buy that would allow her to upload all of that directly from her iPhone that way we could stop endlessly paying for a cloud service

I currently use mega and Dropbox's free plans and I for sure need more than the 20gb mega provides and and 8 GB I have on Dropbox.

I'm currently looking at idrive or filen, I was wondering about other people's experiences with these two. Other recommendations would also be appreciated.

SSD fried on my old PC but I have 5 3TB drives configured as storage spaces. At this point I would rather stick the drives in an external enclosure than worry about buying another SSD and maybe PSU.

Will these drives be recognizable as storage spaces? Or will I have to hook them up via SATA for windows to rebuild the storage spaces?

5+ year old 3TB drive (WDBYFT0030BBK) and the white light is blinking but the PC doesn't recognize it. Been working fine for years with no problem. MiniPartitionTool doesn't recognize it either but when it's plugged in and the cable is removed from the PC there is a sound of recognition but nothing ever comes of it. Any way to save the data on it? I do have the data on my PC and just ordered a new drive but I was wondering if it was salvagable.

I’ve been looking at a rack mount solution for my UnRaid server, and I’ve considered the SuperMicro CSE 847 chassis, with these 12 TB HGST Ultrastar DC HC520 drives. I have a few of these already, and in my standard PC tower I have to use “Power Disable Feature” SATA cords to get them to spin up. Will I have to use these with the 826ESL1 backplane included with the 847? thank you.

Are there any 3.5" external drives or cases that work with USB power only, no external power supply? I'm looking to replace by external 2.5" backup drive (WD Elements) because after one year, the speed suddenly drops to 5 MB/s (3rd WD drive where that happened and I blame SMR).
