I’ve got a 2.5 inch 1TB drive already, but I don’t have UnRaid setup. Obviously I want some form of redundancy/backups, so do I need to get two 2TB 3.5 inch drives from my Best Buy, or should I only get one? I hear that the parity should be about equal to the main drive. Obviously I wouldn’t get a single 2TB drive and use my current one as redundancy, right?

Hi all, I currently use a HP ProLiant Micro Server Gen8 for the bulk of my storage ~ 80TB, I then access all of this through the network using the device as a dedicated NAS. My issue is that I am now running out of storage and have no additional places to add drives.

I am looking at using an intel Nuc as the brains & networking and then potentially using a DAS to attach the storage. I have done some reading and everything seems to have mixed reviews but I look to be interested in one of the Yottamaster devices (Yottamaster Y-Focus 5 Bay External Hard Drive Enclosure) as they allow daisy chaining which would be a big plus so I can expand as needed without rethinking my setup.

Has anyone used this and can comment on the following that would be great

The noise level, this would be within earshot daily

The performance, I have read they can periodically cut out is this an actual common issue?

I have read that they were not great for RAID but I personally stick to JBOD (Important Data is backed up elsewhere) does anyone know any issues with these in the JBOD configuration. I haven't been able to find any super in-depth reviews on them actually utilizing the device fully.

Can anyone recommend some reasonably priced suitable devices they are away of ideally using either Thunderbolt or USB-C (10Gbp/s +) that I can easily obtain within the UK if this would not be suitable in your opinion.

Any thoughts would be useful, looking to expand to around 250TB within the next year or so

I got gitea which takes a carbon copy of github and other projects pages, but i want one for regular websites too.

So far i've found HTTrack and Cyotek. Are there better ones out there? Or which is the best of the 2?

Or is there a nifty GUI based docker container to do the same thing? don't know how to work out docker images yet, as in ones not on docker-hub

a while ago I bought a bunch of WD external drives. 4Tb, SMR. I know they're not recommended but it was cheap.

I'm using them to store games archived in 7z. I filled them all up about a year ago.

today I figured I'd compress some leftover zip files but one of the drives was slow, too slow, even for SMR (compared to the other drives) I also noticed this drive is always at 100% activity as per HD Sentinel

I did extended self and write/read tests before filling them up and they all passed.

edit

HD Sentinel is giving me bad reads? I tried HWMonitor and the disk is idle at 0% usage. but unlike the other disks, when I copy a file, it peaks at 3mb/s while the others stay between 3-40mb/s.

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some software that will help me manage my photos. What I'm looking for is:

  1. it can group similar photos so that I can choose the right one
  2. tags
  3. that can move files
  4. auto tag people

There is any thing like that?

I have OWC Thunderbay 8 and using Chronosync to make backups for 4x HDD just like RAID 0. But there are quite a lot of empty space in 2x HDD which can be better if I had RAID 5 or 6.

But here's my problem:

  1. OWC's softRAID is well known for being terrible by my industry and they NEVER suggested. Told me to avoid it due to its instability.
  2. I have no idea where to find RAID 5 or 6 software for Mac.

I really need RAID 6 but I dont see any options other than buying a whole new enclosure.

Any suggestions?

Original Title: Low level data hoarder here. I have about $70 in Best Buy rewards that will expire soon that I want to put towards 1 drive. What's the best overall 8-12 GB hard drive available at a decent Price per TB? It will be going in my desktop computer's hard drive bay.

I am in desperate need of MORE hard drive space. In the past few months I have been needing to constantly delete old files to make up for more relevant, current media (movies/games, etc.). I do not have a NAS. I am putting this drive in my desktop computer's hard drive bay. I am not going to even RAID for at least 6 months. I currently only have a few 1 or 2 TB drives that are each over 95% full. I want my first "BIG" hard drive to be as good as possible for the time being. Things I am looking for in particular are:

  1. for it to be on the quieter side
  2. For it to be easily shuckable (if it is an external drive)
  3. CMR instead of SMR (if possible at this storage size)
  4. (Optional) not sure how to word this, but in the event I set up a NAS or RAID in the future, for it to "work well with others".

Again, this drive will be in the same room as where I use my computer, about 2 feet away from my head, so I would prefer it to be on the quieter side of hard drive noise levels. The computer will be on for anywhere from 4-8 hours every 24 hour period. It does not need to hold intensive files like video games (I have an SSD for those), but rather file types such as pdfs, mp3s, mp4s, mkvs, etc. I can possibly price match the drive to get a better deal, as long as the hard drive is available on other retailers.

My current top consideration is this: WD - Red Plus 8TB NAS Internal Hard Drive currently on sale for $169.99 ($21.24 a TB). I understand it is meant for NAS but I'm under the impression that just means it can work alone OR with other drives, vs. non-NAS advertised drives that are more limited. Also I am willing to sacrifice the legendary "sub $15 a TB" price considering it isn't Black Friday or any other big sale of the year.

Hi folks, this probably gets asked a lot, but I'm not finding many relevant posts in the very recent past.

Are there any recommendations for an affordable data backup/solution for an individual? I'm thinking of hot/warm storage. I do not yet need to address cold/archival storage. I have an old Drobo DAS unit, which has served me well. It was intended to be the worse-case-scenario backup. However, my data collection has outgrown the single-drives I was using as my primary backups, so the Drobo DAS is all I have. I would therefore like another backup option. Probably a new NAS is best, and I can use my current DAS as a backup (of the backup).

Planning for the future, I want:

-at least 16TB capacity today, but with plenty of room to grow (after dual-drive redundancy)

-A future capacity of at least 40TB (more is better, obviously)

-10GB Ethernet preferred. 1GB required. A spare 1GB interface would also be nice to have.

-For durability, I typically use spinners. An SSD cache is optional, in my opinion. I don't need blazing fast speed, but if that can be achieved at minimal cost, I'll take it.

-I like Drobo's model of making some use of whatever drives you give it, but I know that comes at significant backend waste and cost. Do I assume correctly I can't reasonably do something like that with a new array?

-It must be capable of operating without WAN access

-I do not need rackmount. Some day in the distant future, I may wish I could rack this, but for now, I do not have a rack where I want this unit. Actually, a desktop tower with its guts spilling out on the table would be suitable, right now.

-I typically use RAID-6. I like having dual-failure tolerance.

I'm no genius, but I know my way abound computers. Obviously I've considered Synology...they seem fine. But can I build something myself (such as a TrueNAS system). For a better deal? And what are people's thoughts about unRAID? If I'm building one myself, what kind of hardware might I need? Could I do a DAS unit instead for equal or lesser cost, and the same capabilities?

Lastly, I have access to some old HP desktops, circa 2018, with 8th gen intel processors. Would it be worth making something out of those, or would I be better of starting from scratch?

I am having trouble getting info from Syncbackpro's technical support, was wondering if someone can elaborate.

I have about 5 computers that sync files between each other, mainly for game saves that don't use Steam Cloud or a cloud-equivalent service and settings files for programs like Borderless Gaming. Steam Deck with Windows, Desktop Machine, Home Theater, Laptop, Server (95 percent of my games are stored on a NAS, some of which save to the root folder of the game/emulator), etc. My syncbackpro profiles point to a remote cloud folder that's also on my local network (Synology).

Currently, I am on version 9 of Syncback. When I create a profile for one machine, I have to export it then import it into the other machine manually (turn on the computer, log in, import the profile). Doing that multiple times per game and running the profile each time gets laborious, I heard in version 10 or 11 you can use something called Syncback Management Service that supposedly might do this all automated for you after making the profile. Likely, you can assign it to a group of "users" and they will be able to use the profile. Can a machine be setup to auto-import profiles from something like a shared folder?

Does anyone have any experience with this? I tried asking their support but I didn't get a straight answer.

Not sure if this is the right subreddit but I couldn't find much else. Basically, I upgraded my laptop's SSD from 512 GB to 2TB last night. I used Macrium Reflect to save a disk image to a USB thumb drive, and then booted off the USB and did a system restore. After that I took out the USB, booted normally, and things seem to work okay. However, it took a scarily long time to boot up and display. It seems fine, but maybe kind of slow. I didn't have any way to just clone to my new drive, which I why I went with imaging. Would it have been better to clone the drive? Is it possible that I've lost some data, or will in the future? Should I buy an external m.2 bay, wait for it to show up, and wipe the drive and then clone it? Or does it not matter? I really can't tell even after researching for hours. All I know is that images are a compressed "screenshot" of a certain point on your system, while cloning copies but for bit. Thanks for any help you can give.

So I want to use an iPad mini 6 (or possibly the 7 if it comes out this year) as a media player to watch movies and tv shows offline using Kodi or Plex. I’ll need around 4tb. Should I use an external ssd or hdd? Or is it just not worth doing on an iPad? Thanks.

I scraped his computer for pictures and I'm at around 30,000 photos. I need some kind of software that will help me get that number down. I figure I can start by sorting out all the photos that don't have people in them. That in itself will be a huge help. I'm using Windows and Mac.

I have a Seagate 4 TB HDD connected to my MacBook Pro. I inadvertently lost everything. I need a recommendation for a personal data recovery app, not a multi device IT platform a company would buy.

It seems free services limit the number of files one can recover. I am willing to pay for something that will recover all my files.

Greetings. As the title suggests I am looking for useful programs that allow me to quickly search names of folders/file on various disk drives as well as allow to transfer/copy between them. I remember hearing about Total Commander but I assume there are better options by now? Thanks in advance.

I found a cheap offer for an OEM ST16000NE000 that I would like to buy for my NAS. I am new in choosing my HDs and make terrible mistakes in the past (buying SMR). I want to avoid wasting money, how can you say this will be good ones compare to EXO or WD red, red pro. Also what the reliability of OEM ?

Thanks.

I have an external harddrive (5TB) that GoodSync says there's only 12.74GB free. But when my Mac looks at the drive, it says there is 2.21TB available. (see attached pictures)

Any clues of why there's a difference? I'm not even sure where to start, but I'll keep everyone posted.

EDIT: I'm also seeing that GoodSync thinks my external harddrive (External 1) is only 602GB. Shouldn't that be 5TB?

Due to the way we backed up home photos before I built our NAS, I have what amounts to multiple snapshots of our collection, so the older pictures have multiple copies.

Is there an application I can run to scan my photos directory and identify the duplicates so I can cull them out?

I’m running TrueNAS scale with an i3-13100 and 64GB of RAM; not sure if that is sufficient to run a plug-in or if I’d have to run it on other compute. Thanks!

For decades I have been moving my data from media to media until today like most of you its contained on raided hard drives, content that I have hoarded my data as obsessively as the next person. However, today I unearthed a missing box of CDROMS containing some of my project work images which I had not worked into my set. I didn't miss them. I don't need them. I don't even own a CDROM drive.... So I thought. Then I noticed that like a good hoarder I had packed a portable CDROM drive in with the set.........

Is this the right sub for advice regarding micro sd cards? Id like to buy a card that has minimum 1.5 tb of space and is able to work with 4k. I dont think there are many on the market yet. Ive seen the sandisk ultra 1.5tb, but there is no sandisk extreme. The ultra only works with full hd and not 4k plus is pretty „slow“ in wrighting/reading speeds. Do you guys have any ideas or know where i could find out about new sd cards that are coming up or where i can buy one?

Setup advice. NAS via WiFi repeater at home. Stupid idea or OK?

I want to improve my backup setup for home photos/videos/docs. Looking for advice. Current setup:

  • Main storage PC
  • Backup #1 external hardrive
  • Nextcloud on VPS (only docs + sync with phone)

Future setup:

  • Main storage PC
  • Backup #1 NAS with 4 slots (2nd slot for mirror, 3/4 for future expansion).
  • Backup #2 NAS at parents house (identical setup to #1 + network share)
  • Nextcloud stays the same

The problem:

I won't be able to connect NAS directly to the router and will need to use WiFi repeater that has Ethernet port. The speed and stability is going to be probably bad? :/

So if we remove backup #2 and network share between NAS, is it a stupid idea to buy NAS only to use it as offline and bring it from closet everytime I need it?
