I am going to archive possibly lost in time eBooks using the Internet Archive. I am mainly looking for ones with the encrypted "*.ebx" file extension. I want only very old eBooks (during the years 1999 to 2006). For security reasons, I am scared to use torrents. Is there any website where I could find them?

I was looking through a bunch of slides from the 1960s. All of them in perfect condition — Kodachrome really is amazing.

It got me thinking, how should I archive my current photos? Right now, I have a few hard drives I back up to. Two 8tb HDDs in my computer, and two 4tb external HDDs. They are all around half full right now, and I make sure to always have two copies of all my photo file folders on different hard drives.

What I am concerned about is the longevity of this system. If I were to die, these hard drives would either go bad over time or get dropped or wiped. This would not happen with the Kodachrome Slides.

I have been considering archiving to Blu Ray discs for years, but never got around to doing it due to the sheer amount of files I will need to burn onto the Blue Rays.

I do not trust the cloud, as the Photobucket account of someone I know recently got deleted, losing all their photos.

I am also not willing to spend $1600 for 400 on clearance M-Discs.

Does a solution to my problem exist? Should I just only shoot film?

Hi I was looking over the details of my encrypted drives. These were old drives which had data written and deleted multiple times. When I encrypted them, I encrypted them with option "Encrypt used space only." I realize now that is not the most secure. They are 3Tb and 6TB drives. I was wondering:

  1. Should I turn off encryptions and encrypt the whole HD again. This will take a long long time. One is 75% full other is 50% full.
  2. Or can I just filling the remaining empty space with random data (Large Zip files of backed up family photos) and just fill the drives. Then delete these extra files, this is likely to be much faster. I am thinking, this in essence will encrypt the unused space?

Thanks for your input.

TS-453 PRO died last week, now I'm considering building vs pre-built primarily for syncing 3 computers and light streaming.

This time though I only need 2 drives (RAID) vs 4 so I found a case as small as possible in this Thermaltake Core V1.

Would appreciate any suggestions for:

  • mobo
  • cpu
  • psu

For anyone interested, the RSV-SATA-Cage-34 is back in stock at Amazon and Newegg. I've been waiting awhile for it as I had purchased my server case without them. I regretted that decision almost immediately.

I am currently backing up all my hard drives to a bigger hard drive they will all fit on. Is there a software that compare the files against each other and let me know if I have bit rot or corruption on any of these files? Probably have about 10tb

Full tower PC with 12 HDDs, no raid, just a dumb SMB file server running on a Win10 machine. While the new controller can see all 8 drives connected in the bios, windows boots up and only sees the 4 drives connected to the internal controller (built into the motherboard).

Watching a few videos it looks like I need to set this up in the bios, but what few videos I have seen involve initializing the hard drives or combining drives into a raid config and I dont need to combine drives and I certainly dont want to lose any data.

Is there a guide I can look at to set this up? The older 9240-8i was plug n play. Connect 8 drives, boot it up and 8 drives show up in Windows.

I need to download a manual found on the next url:

https://pws.ktivs.net/manuals/21515

When I get into the link the url changes and gets a new format ending in "...index.html#page=1"

The thing is, the document is 182 pages long and I don't want to go page by page printing each one as a pdf.

Anyone has any idea on how to get the whole manual in one go?

For context I have a M2 Macbook and a 4TB Lacie HD with 1.5T of data. I have read about ZFS, NAS Drives, RAID Devices, etc. I don't know where to start or how to compare these strategies in terms of cost or effectiveness. Basically what I am seeking for is a decades long strategy on how to store this data entirely offline that is somewhat cost effective and maybe some tips on how to maintain it as well as the best brand/service to go with. Thank you!

I have 3 stand alone computers that don't touch the network. I need storage ideas. Looking for the external drive to have redundancy and able to connect to all three computers. Is that possible?

I’m new to the idea of a nas. My parents want a nas for the business and they asked me to help them build it. How should I spec one out? I have an old 9600k and mobo for it, should I use that? Or is it more effective and better to get a prebuilt or newer build. They want to be able to access will off site and have a decent amount of storage. I was think of putting it in a raid 5/6 configuration depending on how safe they want to be. Any information helps thank you

Using EXFAT volume SSD with an IPhone 15 pro max.

Internal storage was reporting as full so I tried to offload some files onto external SSD.

this caused the folders to bug out and become inaccessible using the iPhone.

On windows I can access the folders but can not see any contents.

And if I try to delete the affected folders I get the following error.

Error 0x80070091: the directory is not empty"

Can someone please tell me how I can delete the affected folders.

Thank you.

Hi.

I’m looking for advice on what DAS to buy for a Mac Studio. I’d like to have 16tb of usable storage and would like to have redundancy. Speed is important so a NAS is out. I’ve been reading about OWC and Terramaster and QNAP etc but all I hear is about disconnects with Sonoma, and corruption of the drives.

I’m happy to have two basic external drives and to sync them with software, that would be fine. But again I read that LaCie is no good and G Drives now are no good.

If I want 2x16tb of faster than network speed drives, what is my best option?

Thank you.

Hello community. Does it exist a Windows utility (software) which checks the currently copied file, and if there is a checksum error, tries to copy again, maybe 5-6 times before it skips and copies the next file?

I have utilities, which can show me, that the copied files failed. But this is not enough for me. I want that the program tries to copy again.

To make the long story short, I have a medium (iPod) which gives random errors when copying files onto it. There are not a lot of errors, but still I would like a 100% perfect copy. The program I use to copy files tells me when there are errors and which files. But I have than to manually remove the bad files (50-100 files, if I copy my whole library) and copy them again, which is than in most cases successful.

And no, the media is not defective, the problem is a buggy firmware (Rockbox).

I just went through this thread about somebody noticing the gold spinning down and taking 2-4 seconds after double clicking a folder for the contents to come up.

I see the gold is marketed as more reliable than their other hard drives. Now I’m thinking this reliability is because they are essentially running less hours being on. Has this thread linked or the gold line behavior been discussed before?

Need something. Similar to hush note to send link in email for receiver to open. I opened my own hush note and it says it doesn’t exist? Is it because I opened it? Is there something else I could use?

Hello , I just got a blue WD drive dying on me after 9 years so I'm currently looking for another one to buy, prefering one with reliability and longevity if possible.

My main usage of the new drive is for my home computer, doing big files storage, archiving, photoshop, 3d and some gaming so there will be plenty of reading and writing for the drive.

Should I get the black or red one or just the blue for cheap is enough? Currently leaning on the black one after doing some research, but not sure if it will worth it in the end (A 4tb black is the same price with 6tb red plus at my place).

I already have a SSD for OS if that helps with the recommendation. Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I’m currently looking for a way to download a large number of AI-generated images, around 1000-2000 at a time. I’ve found a few ideas and sources where I can generate or find these images, but the main problem I’m running into is the resolution of the images—they’re often too low for what I need.

Has anyone here successfully downloaded this volume of high-quality AI-generated images before? If so, could you share some methods or tools you’ve used? Ideally, I’m looking for:

  1. Sources where I can generate or find high-quality AI-generated images in bulk.
  2. Download tools or techniques that can handle large quantities of images efficiently.
  3. Tips to ensure the images have good resolution (preferably 1080x1080 or higher).

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Hi folks,

Done my fair bit of research, just wanted a final suggestion from the good people here before I bite the bullet.

Looking at a new SSD, one of the 3 mentioned above. I only need a 1TB as I'll be using it for general backup/music production backup i.e. no monstrous video files.

My point of reference is an old Seagate HDD I have which is transferring monstrously slow, around 70 Mbps. I will be transferring between a Macbook Pro M2 2022 (I believe with two usbc 3.1 ports) and a Mac Mini 2023 (with two Thunderbolt 4 ports). I don't need files to move faster than light, but quicker than the Seagate would be nice.

Are the T9 and X10 overkill? Will the T7 do the job?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I'm new to this so hopefully this question makes sense.

I currently have a QNAP TR-004 as DAS (connected via USB to my networked mini-pc). It has four 12TB drives in RAID5 and I have a (remote) smaller backup drive for essentials.

In the future I would like an 8-bay USB DAS in RAID6 but I am struggling to find suitable options for this (at least not for a reasonable cost). Currently the best option seems just to be a second TR-004 as a seperate RAID5 array.

What would be your solution for an 8-bay+ USB connected (to mini-pc) RAID6 array? If the answer is software RAID and dumb enclosure is there any downside to that on an N100 processor and what would be the RAID software to use (win11)?

What I was asking is to turn multiple SATAs into just one USB-A or just one SATAs is there a tool or ways to do it?
