Just finished setting up my Asustor Flashstor 12 Pro (upgraded to 16GB RAM) with 12 × 4000GB Crucial NVMe SSDs in RAID6 + 1 Hot Spare. Getting around 33TB usable space. Mostly for local NAS use to stream multiple Plex 4K streams to 6 people on a 10Gbps network.

I am not sure if to stay with the ASUSTOR ADM OS or install TrueNAS. Probably for Plex ASM is good.

Cannot wait to copy my data from my remote server (20TB worth) and test the performance!

Hi Folks,

I use a USB flash drive when working to store my files (which I back up when home).

However, A few times, I have forgot my usb drive and left it plugged into the computer in work. Ideally, I want software which auto locks the drive when I log out of a machine. This isn't an NSA style data hoard or anything. I just want something that protects files from being accessed if I forgot the usb with a simple pin or password.

I thought that Bitlocker would do this (as I use windows PC's and I'm unable to install software on my work machine as our user accounts don't have admin privileges).

However, when I switch user, or log out of a work machine, the usb drive remains unlocked for new users. This to me is bizarre. Surely it should lock automatically when a log out or user switch is initiated?

Is there something I am missing here or are there alternatives that would be better? Bearing in mind I can't install software on work machines - so Veracyrpt wasn't an option.

Thank you

Original Title: Know any GOOD DAS WITH RAID for use with Macbook Pro M1, Mac OS 14 (Sonoma) AND Future OS Updates, With Preferably USB-C or USB 3, from a brand that always keeps up with computer system updates? Thank you.

Edit: Just realised (I think), there are drive enclosures (DAS) which come WITH Hardware RAID right? SO then... I wouldn't need an app / driver at all if I bought one of those? Is that correct? Is Hardware RAID something that happens inside the box/container without the need for software?

2nd Edit: Someone in the comments told me that Apple comes with a RAID functionality inside Disk Utility. So might be using that if I need to.

Hi there I'm brand new to the world of NAS/DAS, and given my current technical hardware limitations, and my home setup (simple tiny flat in Singapore (pretty cramped)), I thought it would be best to minimise wires, connections and headaches (given a young family who shouldn't be allowed to turn off a connection if I'm overseas and need access to my NAS - which can't be guaranteed), to just go for a DAS, for storing my video editing, music editing, and my whole life's work's files - and then do editing for current projects on Portable SSDs. I made the rookie mistake of buying a Macbook Pro with only 256GB of space.

So for a DAS, I managed to find the Orico 3559C3 (from a Singapore online store called Shoppee) which is a nice 5-bay unit which is cool (temperature), doesn't overheat, doesn't make any noise except the hard drive clicking or scrolling sounds (whatever you call those sorry I'm new), and I have 2 12TB Ironwolf drives (can't tell if original or not but seem legit from the registration number but it's only 2 years or something (also from Shoppee), and I've copied ALL my files into the first 12TB drive, and then copied it onto the 2nd 12TB drive as a backup - and might have to do this weekly.

The thing is they sold it as RAID enabled, but the software from their website, only supports up to MacOS 12, and we're currently up to MacOS 14. I asked the seller on the online store if it would run on MacOS Sonoma and they said yes, so I bought it, and after buying it and downloading the drivers/online download they linked me to for RAID, the software says it only supports up to MacOS 12. Their reply is "we're sorry try to use RAID and this on an older computer then".

Good news is they have a good returns and refund policy, so I'm not worried about that, but my question is, have any of you found a DAS that's easy enough to use for newbies, ON the same table as your laptop, preferably with USB C or USB 3 connections, maybe 4 or 5 bays, that can also run RAID and their RAID software keeps up to date with all the new computer operating systems be it Windows/Mac? Like basically a brand that's super up-to-date, all the time basically?

All I need the RAID to do, is I believe RAID 1? Just keep a constant copy of my main drive. That's it. In the future I may get more complicated with the setup on RAID, but for now, all I wanted is a simple copy, but thanks to the software not working on MacOS Sonoma, I have to manually copy weekly, which is what I wanted to prevent, and why I paid slightly higher for this particular model, because it had RAID and the seller said yes to Sonoma.

I have no clue as to what a good brand/model would be, so I'm looking for some help from any of you who have tried and tested using DAS WITH RAID on the most updated computer systems.

Thank you so much for spending your precious time answering in advance. I really appreciate it.

So for context, I an artist I am a fan of drewn a pretty nice-but rather intense (as in, with blood and stuff, and very different from their usual stuff) pic, apparantly some years ago... And when I dumbass stumbled upon it, I commented on it... Which apparantly reminded them that this piece exists, and they seemed to not like it being in their account anymore, cause it's now gone. And I didn't saved it before either, cause I am dumb... 😖

Hello, I posted this over at AnalogCommunity and thought maybe some of you here would be able to offer suggestions.

Years ago, I bought the Epson Perfection V370 scanner. It scanned several hundred photos until scan lines began showing up on scans. I contacted Epson support, and they concluded it was a hardware issue. For years, I couldn't scan anything without dreaded lines showing up. I cleaned it vigorously, even under the glass, still no results. One day, I came across the same scanner for a very good price, it was refurbished. I jumped at the chance. Guess what? You guessed it, after going through 700+ photo scans, the lines are beginning to appear again. Cleaned the glass and the mat, and the only thing that got rid of the line was turning the photo around and scanning it that way. I'm very frustrated because I'm low income and barely recouped the cost of selling my old one for parts. Can you recommend a reliable replacement that goes for a good price online? One that will last me if possible... I have tons more photos to go and may have to pause my efforts now until I'm comfortable with getting a replacement. I've been digitizing family photos which is proving to be a pretty big effort. A good bonus if the quality of the scans are as good as the v370 (48 bit color, 9600DPI, etc)

Thank you for your help and advice.

I currently have 3 4TB external portable HDD. One of the drives is 7 years old, one is about 3 years old and the other is about 1 year old. I am thinking about purchasing the My Book - 24TB that way I can have everything all on one drive. For anyone with this particular one, what are your thought on it? How long have you had it? If you do not have it anymore, what happened? What is the average lifespan for this drive? With the right format, is it compatible with a Roku TV? What are the pros and cons of this drive? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Original Title: Bought a Video Capture USB from Amazon to convert old hi8 tapes to digital, after connecting my old Sony camcorder to the device, the video on OBS is good but there is no audio, USB capture device isnt listed under 'audio device' in properties and is marked as 'inactive' in audio mixer settings...

Does anyone know why this might be? I go on the source (Video capture device) properties in OBS > Use custom audio device > the only thing listed here is my mic, there is supposed to be a 'USB audio' or something like that...

For reference, my camcorder is a Sony CCD-TRV46E (only 2 connectors, 1 yellow for video and 1 black for audio... Connected yellow from camcorder to yellow on USB capture device and black from camcorder to red/white on USB capture device).

The capture device is this cheap one on Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08RMSJNW2/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza

If anyone has any fixes, please let me know... Thanks

Apologies in advance, because I'm pretty uneducated on the technicalities of the cloud backup market. I've got about 3.5TB of data with iDrive, and I'm looking to migrate to Backblaze, but I'm a bit confused about the process.

The last time I migrated was years ago, and back then, I basically had to pay for a new external drive that the service I was leaving put my data on, and sent to me. However, I've gotten the impression that nowadays, you don't necessarily have to do that...? I've seen info about iDrive e2 where it can be migrated electronically without having to mess around with irl media, but I confess I don't truly understand what e2 is, or in what way it differs to the standard iDrive setup I have, so my knowledge is incomplete.

I just can't seem to find solid answers for what the current process actually involves, which seems ridiculous, but it's probably just something I've missed. Can anyone shed light on this?

Been running enterprise drives in my DS920+ for a few years now, but recently moved my unit into my living room and the noise of the disks is aggravating my wife. What is the consensus on desktop class HDDs for some light duty four bay NAS? Possibly going for the Seagate Barracuda 4tb. Opinions?

Hi DataHoarders,

Some background information: I have a Raspberry PI 4 with an external 8TB HDD that I use as a manual backup for my data, where I can sync my main computer with my work laptop. The 8TB HDD also has some other stuff in it that lets me access it from home on whatever device I have established an SSH connection with the Raspberry Pi.

I realised that very soon I will run out of storage and I want to add another USB HDD to copy the original backup and continue using that as the main backup and the original as a secondary.

Problem: I want to buy a second HDD that can either be a plain HDD without any accessories (i.e. I already have an extra SATA to USB reader with external power adaptor) or get an encased HDD that comes with its own power adapter.

I found Seagate Exos X18 3.5" 16000 GB SAS and Western Digital My Book external hard drive 16000 GB Black for the same price through my work's punch-out (around £260). I also looked into WD but realised that I am way out of my depth when it comes on the type of HDD I should purchase. I want to get something robust that will last a while but I already bricked on WD Red HDD because of my lack of understanding on the TLER technology ...

If I could get some advice on whether the Seagate exos is going to do similar thing where mounted drive starts producing I/O errors after not being used all the time in a NAS, I rather go with a Western Digital My Book, (I couldn't find WD Blue on the punchout website unfortunately as an alternative).

Thank you!

Hi friends, I am a data noob and looking to back up many old videos of my kids. Personal use only -- no professional use, or anything sensitive. All videos are from the last ~10 years, taken from various smartphones etc.

For this use case, I'm looking for external hard drive recommendations. When I say "external" I mean -- a thing I can plug into my laptop and transfer files to. (If there is a better definition I'd be glad to hear it!)

If some other unknown (to me) method is better than an external hard drive, I'm all ears. Or other recommendations that would solve my use case. I have already searched the sub but am a little turned around.

Budget range is flexible, including the high end. Thanks in advance!

I wonder: Should we replace our external HDDs every 10? 15? years? And what are good practices when doing so?

My situation as an example: I have a few 15 year old external 1TB HDDs. I now bought a new 4TB one. My goal is to have the data on this new medium that can last another x years longer. But then I think some data may have already been lost on the 1TBs without me knowing it. Do you check your data before copying it to another HDD for the long run and how?

I only power on my HDDs once every few months to copy data.

I'm using the example on the github:

https://github.com/gildas-lormeau/single-file-cli

single-file https://www.example.com --crawl-links=true --crawl-inner-links-only=true --crawl-max-depth=1 --crawl-rewrite-rule="^(.*)\?.*$ $1"

This works great except that all internal links are saved into their own html pages. i would like to have it saved all into one html file if that is possible. I wasn't sure if i was missing a flag or if singlefile is not capable of doing this?

If I run the first two patterns, 0xaa and 0x55, and stop the program, is it possible to rerun badblocks only running the last two? 0xff and 0x00 to complete the process?

I am reading the help for it and I believe I just need to run two separate commands to finish the last two patterns. Is this correct? Is it possible to run the last two patterns with one command?

badblocks -wsv -t 0xff -b 4096 /dev/sdb
badblocks -wsv -t 0x00 -b 4096 /dev/sdb

can I do this?

badblocks -wsv -t 0xff,0x00 -b 4096 /dev/sdb

I have purchased a new laptop for school and a lot of it probably isn't useful but I would like to save as much useful data before wiping it to sell. I have already uploaded my documents and downloads folders to onedrive and just copied over my C:\Users\MYNAME to my desktop to encapsulate it all. I am almost certain nothing else would be saved anywhere else, the rest should just be game, and application settings. Anything else I should be mindful of? Thanks in advanced!
