Has anyone here ever successfully moved forensic copies of windows 11 from one drive to another before?

I keep getting the popup 'you'll need administrator permission to move this folder' and then it hangs on me. (I am using a different PC and connecting the drive with the forensic copy via usbc enclosure)

Or am I doing this wrong?

For context, the original forensic copy was made in Macrium reflect. I just want to use the drive for something else but the backup is hogging space.

Hi all

I'm in a bit of a pickle and are hoping someone in this group can help. I am running MX Linux, and the backup tools I use (Lucky Backup) creates a versioned copy of the directories they back up. This is perfect for my local backup needs as new backups only backup the newly changed files while retaining previous versions. The downside is that I am mirroring my entire group of backup directories to Mega, and it's not happy with almost 2 million backup files. I'm looking for a solution that reduces the 2 million files in my cloud backup, yet doesn't require a daily re upload of large backup containers because only a couple of files have changed. I do have my backups/mirroring split out into separate folders somewhat. Ie, documents (daily changes) Media (infrequent changes), software (infrequent changes) Photos (sometimes daily changed, sometimes static for a month), etc.

Ideally what I am thinking is to create a (new) tarball of each backed up folder if and only if it has new backup files in it, and then mirror these tarballs to Mega instead of the folders. The problem is that the backups create new files (ie logs) in each backup folders, even if there are no actual file changes to back up. So each backup folder is actually changing daily, independent of any actual file changes. I could possible reduce my backup frequency from daily to weekly or such, to help with this. Unfortunately then if files do change I have no backup of them until the now less frequent backup runs.

Changing from Mega is not an option for several reasons, so I need to find a solution that works with it.

Anyone else overcome a similar issue, or any ideas?

So a couple of my HHD's failed on me recently while i was trying to retrieve data, so decided to buy an ssd. Please help me make the right choice. For the sake of future proofing, i wanna go for a 4tb variant (kindly tell if it's a good decision or not). Next, with the intent of using it exclusively externally with the help of an enclosure(atleast for the foreseeable future), tell me which of the following specs should i worry about-

DRAM SLC CACHING PCIE GENERATION TLC OR QLC TBW

I have a 15yr + hdd that is not retrieving files correctly using Windows. There seems to be some corruption of sorts even though it is mounting. What’s the best in class software to clone the drive, then try to retrieve the files from the original?

What would be the best way to store music besides downloading it on my computer? Ideally, I’d like to store thousands of songs so I can have them in the future, which would eliminate the risk of me losing them from being possibly deleted on music platforms as time goes on. I’d assume the best way is a hard drive but I’ve heard they only last a few years. I’ve thought about uploading all the songs to a cloud storage but there is a risk of that particular site possibly shutting down in the future. Is there a sure-fire way to store music long term? And what would be the best way to go about this? Thank you in advance, I’ve been procrastinating this but it’s time that I find an answer and I greatly appreciate any help!

Hello! I have come into possession of several hundred slides and about 9 hours of 8mm and super 8 video. Primarily family videos from 1963-1975. A few are in the 50s.

I've been working on digitizing everything, but I'm not sure where to go from there. I've been annotating the slides as marked, and writing synopses of the video segments as I get to watch them. My hope is to crowdsource locations and names from my family, but I have no idea where to start with hosting.

As a teaser, I have Thailand and the Philippines 1964-1965, featuring a floating market, temples, some sort of traditional theater performance with a pretty serious looking sword fight, and a formation flyover of what must be the first few MIG-15s to enter the conflict.

I also have footage of what appears to be a USO camp show in Ketchikan AK called "Top of the world", featuring Bob Hope. There's also like 4 hours of hunting footage for whatever reason lol.

I would be very grateful if anyone can point me towards a cheap/free hosting service that will allow my family members to tag people and places. I don't have any social media other than reddit if that matters.

I'm not sure this is the exact right sub, but hopefully it counts since categorizing and properly tagging the subject material is hoarding adjacent.

I got my new laptop all configured how I want, so I'm making a backup in macrium so I can easily revert to this state.

Problem is, I didn't realize the laptop came with the C drive encrypted in bitlocker. Totally not what I wanted! I plan on decrypting it but I'd like to have a working image backup to fall back on before screwing around any further! My fear is that if I try to restore from the Macrium image it will ask for a bitlocker recovery key that I don't have. I have no MS account linked to the laptop (no thank you), so getting the recovery key that way won't happen. When I check in powershell it says there is no key and the encryption is basically permanently unlocked. So I'm 99% sure there won't be any problems restoring from my macrium image backup, but I am paranoid want to be absolutely sure before proceeding! LOL :(

A pic is worth 1000 words so here are some screenshots which tell the full story

I have no idea where to ask this or why I can't find anyone asking the same thing.

Right now I have an old unreliable 5TB drive for personal, 12TB drive for personal work projects, and an 8TB for contractor work projects. I am quickly going through that 8TB, and that 12TB is about a year away from filling.

I need a setup where I can buy some 8-12tb drives and a bay to manage them, but here's the kicker---I only need them to run maybe 1-2 hours a month. I don't need them for a server, just need something that I can keep unplugged, doesn't need Internet, and can simply plug in when I want and unplug when I'm done transferring. (All my video production is done on my computer thanks to 2+TB of space available all times, so a server workflow is a negative for me.)

Can I just buy any drive, or do I need something specific? Would a Nas drive be good cause it wont be running 24/7, or is it worse because I won't be running it. Thank you for helping my dumb ass in advanced lol

I just bought a brand-new Seagate Passport 4TB External drive, and used it to back up some data. However, it took over 12 hours (this is just copying a file directory straight onto the drive through Windows Explorer - not using any encryption or included backup software). This is MUCH slower than the 3-4 hours it took to copy the same exact data onto a Seagate 1TB External drive I had purchased over a year ago. Both transferred the same data, on about the same day/boot of the PC, and are using the same USB port, and the same USB 3.0 cable - why was the newer, bigger drive so much slower to transfer data?!

The older 1tb drive lists a transfer speed of 120mb/s... The newer 4tb drive doesn't list the transfer speed... Not on the box or in the documentation, or any of the sites advertising it. Even Seagate's website itself doesn't have any information about the speed - Am I missing something obvious here?

Hi! We have a ton of photos I'd like to have digitised, probably like 500 of them.

Now I am not concerned if this will take me 1 minute per picture, but I do want it to be the highest resolution I can get today, for a reasonable price still.

Important to note: all the pictures are heavily curved, so they won't be going into a tray of say 30, where the device would start picking them up one by one to scan within 3 minutes or less. I don't see it working and I'm not comfortable with that process.

So putting them under a panel that flattens them to the glass to scan would be ideal. If the software recognises borders and automates cropping, this would be perfect as it would save on processing.

So I was wondering what you guys have experience with and would recommend?

New to the NAS life. I bought 3 12TB HGST drives from Server Parts Deals (they are still in transport) but didn't notice until now that the description says "300 CRC errors, 100 Reallocated Sectors". This NAS is just for personal use, Plex etc.. how screwed am I?

My fb was hacked and the hacker spammed so fb banned my profile so I lost all of my pictures wich I didn't save somewhere else and I would like to retrieve them. I tried wayback machine but I don't get it, also I know my username, emailadres and phone number it's linked to (I think it is linked but I am not sure) but I do not know the id link (I mean the www facebook.com/......) wich I need for wayback machine or either one or don't I? Somebody on insta says they can get the whole page back to me for 200$ but that is so much money for me and I don't perse want the account back but mostly I would love to see what pictures of me and my little brother and other ones I have on there and maybe save them

I've been interested in this device since I heard about it a few weeks back. All of the video reviews I've seen have been positive and the device seems awesome. At $400 it's quite a gamble especially through KS where projects can fail and are not guaranteed. Anyone else pledging? https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1945743381/ut2-redefining-portable-storage-solutions/description

Hey! I have a video production company and we film in 4k so each day of filming adds up to 9TB. We have a Synology NAS with 60TB Raid5, but we need a much bigger solution as well as one that can let us edit without downloads with good speed, using the storaged files. What solution is the best for us?

I just want a simple 2-bay DAS enclosure for two large-capacity HDDs for a Plex server. I'm only interested in running them as single disks (no raid or anything) and I would rather not spend an arm and a leg.

I've found some but it's a niche market that seems hard to find any reliable reviews or testimonies. Any suggestions? Anything out there that's just got a good record of being reliable?

And as a second question, I've seen here that people strongly recommend USP surge protectors. What's the deal with that? I don't know what they are or what they're for. I gather it helps with sudden power outages, though? If you have a blackout/brownout it will help your device to properly/safely shut down vs. just turning completely off without warning? And I assume that's good because completely shutting off could potentially damage drives? Is that the idea?

Hi all,

So, I need a data storage solution for my job. A couple years ago I started working in a lab that regularly generates very large data files and we end up generating several terabytes every year.

When I started this job, I adopted over a dozen various external hard drives (mixed SSDs and HDDs) filled with these data files going back as far as 2014. When we have customers requesting their old data, it is such a hassle to sift through a drawer of random external drives looking for the one I need. I often have to check 2-3 drives because data from certain years are spread over multiple drives.

Anyway, I would like to consolidate all of this data in one location and put these drives in a cardboard box and never look at them again. I've started to research options, but it's been difficult making a solid choice. I'm also very new to data storage lingo.

Is a NAS really the best option or can I just get a HDD enclosure? Is there a secret third option? I'm leaning towards just getting a hard drive enclosure because the advantages of having a NAS don't seem to apply to my situation.

For more context, I retrieve old data from these drives every few weeks or months. Otherwise, I do not need to have access to this data. I don't actively work with it. For that reason, I don't mind if read/write speed is slow.

Additionally, I do not need to access this data anywhere else but my computer in my office. It would be helpful if my coworker could access it too, whose desk is directly next to mine, but it's not necessary and we would not need to access it at the same time. Access to it via a network or over WiFi is not that important for my needs.

Any thoughts or guidance in the right direction would be helpful.

Hey, folks -- I come bearing news that, at the moment, seems pretty bad. I check the datpiff archive frequently for research purposes. Up to yesterday, the archive stood at just over 365,000 tapes. As of 3:32 AM on September 25, 2024, the archive is now at 146,951 items. More concerningly, the specific page for Datpiff's account is currently displaying the message "this patron has not uploaded any items yet. This page was not like this the last couple of times I checked it.

Now, this may just be a technical error that resolves itself soon, so if the archive is restored soon, I'll gladly take the L for this post. But anyone keeping up with the Datpiff situation can attest that the site has refused to update anyone about the archive, its mobile app, the status of tapes that had yet to be uploaded, etc. The general disregard shown by Datpiff gives me little reason to believe that they might address the matter; hopefully I am proven wrong, but if there is something you have been thinking of looking for on the archive, you should do that search sooner, rather than later.

I'll leave this link to a previous post about the archive's previous size, as archive seems to exempt itself from the wayback machine..

3-2-1 makes great sense, but I would have to spend a lot more on SSDs in order to have my data on two different storage mediums. Who ignores this part? Any tips or strategies to share regarding this part?

The BBC have just released about 33000 tracks from their sound effects library. Dows anyone know if there is a torrent to the whole library or a Python script that will download them all? These existed for the 2020 release of 16000 tracks, but there are more now.

Hi. I hope this is a good sub to ask this question.

I have a Crucial P3 pcie 3.0 nvme m.2 SSD which is rated at up to 3500mbps read speeds. I am using an external enclosure and cable rated up to 10gbps speed, connected to a mid-2014 15" Macbook Pro directly to the usb 3.0 port on which is rated up to 5gbps. However, I'm only getting ±40mbps transfer rates when running blackmagic's disk speed test. The SSD is formatted as ExFat for use on Win and MacOS.

Any ideas what the problem could be? The app I'm loading data into has a realtime transfer speed indicator which fluctuates between 40 and 25mbps, but I have seen "spikes" going up over 400mbps. This would actually be an adequate speed, if I could get it to be consistent.

I appreciate any advice!
