Excuse the noob question, I have a Mycloud PR4100 4 bay Nas drive that have 2 x 8TB running on raid 1.

I recently added 2x 10tb drives and also created as raid 1 but when I did this I had the 2 x 8tb out thinking that I can have them separate.

Now when I have all 4 drives in it, does it run as 2x raid 1 separately?

And if I keep adding files to the folder that was made from the 2 x 8tb does it continuously fill until those are full before spilling over to the new drives?

I'm not new to this sub, I've been lurking and trying to understand the gist of the threads, but I still haven't started hoarding, mostly using my PC harddrive to hoard what I like, but I've been considering hoarding in the future when I get a job. I just bought an external harddrive, Seagate 2tb, since I've been running out of space, gotta start somewhere. Should I check this hdd first and how do I do it? What are the apps that you guys can suggest, I tried looking at this sub's wiki but I'm not pretty sure if it's still updated, can anyone help me out on where to look for information? And for future references, how should I expand my hoarding hobby?

Original Title: I have an 18TB drive in a single-drive Synology DS120j NAS. Planning to get a 4-bay Synology DS423 4-drive NAS, and will install 4 18tb drives in RAID 6. I want to move the data from the single drive. Can I just put the single drive in bay 1 of the new 4-bay nas?

I'm currently using a single bay Synology NAS and backing up to a cold storage hard drive. I want to get this 4-bay Synology nas and with 4 drives, I was planning to run it in RAID 6 and not have to manually backup the data.

If I got this 4-bay NAS, can I just pull the 18TB drive from my current single-bay Synology NAS, place it in slot one of the new NAS, along with 3 new 18TB drives, and will it setup in RAID 6 and keep the files, or will I have to restore the files from my 18TB cold storage NAS?

Thanks in advance for any info

I'm trying to add some storage to my homebuilt NAS (debian, ZFS-on-linux, all drive bays full, can't do rack equipment at this time) and thought a USB-C 3.1/3.2 enclosure might fit the bill, as this is for low-priority data that I'd like to keep nearline (ie. shows I've already finished). Doesn't have to be fast, just reliable.

Well, I've already tried solutions from Orico, Yottamaster, and Mediasonic, and they all have problems that make them unusable: One (Orico) didn't have enough power to actually drive a completely populated enclosure (5-bay model only has 70-watt PSU). Another would spin the drives down after 30 minutes of uptime, even after a firmware update to disable that behavior. Yet another had data issues on the backplane (thank goodness for ZFS or I might not have noticed it).

Does anyone have any good experience with USB-attached enclosures that don't completely suck and have been shown to work fine with ZFS?

If not: What is a cheap, reliable way to add more drives to a NAS that is full?

What ancient repositories of knowledge do you think are below the radar and nearing the chopping block?

I don't have a lot of storage like most here so I'm going for mostly text but...I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I'm considering picking a bunch of gaming wikis and guides and probably some forums like the LTT technical advice forums.

There are probably also more practically useful advice areas on automotive repair, woodworking, and metalworking...probably specialist forums...that may be nearing vanishment. I already see a lot of the forums discussing my car becoming intermittently unreachable or no longer accepting new user signups.

....or should I leave that to the professionals at internet archive and try to find valuable Discords to archive?

What do you think is going to be missed when gone but not now?

Is there a way to do that? Internet archieve, Conifer, and Singlefile all don't work.

The only way I can think of is just screenrecording, but that's very tedious + I'd like to have a search option.

The accounts I want to archieve aren't mine, in case that matters.

I've got a Mini PC I'm using for a media server (Plex w/ external users, music/photos with LAN users), and everything's been on one 12TB HDD that's filling up. I've got it in an Orico USB enclosure. I want to add one or two more disks - whats the best way to expand this? Are there SATA enclosures or am should I go with something like this?

I'm planning to upgrade my laptop with an M.2 SSD and I'm unsure which brand to choose. Since I'm passionate about photography, I'm also considering whether to go for a 512GB or 1TB drive. Could you give me some advice on which option would be best?

I've only had this nas for maybe a month or two, but the performance has been so awful. I'll sum up my main problems:

  1. The hardware is having major trouble keeping up. It only has 1gb of ram. Also, it has an arm cpu that isn't powerful. So, beyond the web ui lagging, especially when doing media indexing and large transfers too iirc, it's just generally slow. If I'm trying to transfer a good number files, say backing up files stored with tartube, it slows waaaay down.
  2. To make this all even worse, my main planned use case, aside from consolidating and backing up files from different devices and drives, is a) storing media (downloads via tartube, media rips/backups, etc) and b) serving that media to my various devices. Performance when it comes to storage and transfers has been bad enough that I haven't even tried deploying the TOS media server or plex.

The Datto NAS has 32GB ram and a xeon d 1521, so it should be much more capable. That being said, I still have a couple of questions.

  1. What OS should I put on the NAS? I'd prefer to have something free/libre, but I'm unsure which one would best fit my use case. My top list of options would probably include TrueNAS, OpenMediaVault, and maybe Amahi or Rockstor. I'm a bit less certain about those latter two though. My top priorities are being able to have relatively painless file storage, being able to use my NAS as a media server, and being able to manage downloads, especially yt-dlp downloads (preferably at the channel level) on the NAS. That being said, I'd still love to be able to use my NAS to self-host other services too, like a personal dashboard, version control repositories, or to do lists.
  2. What RAID configuration should I use? I'm leaning towards RAID 1, but I'm unsure of whether there are better options. For example there are special RAID options for ZFS.

It's 3 a.m. and I'm still trying to figure out which one to buy; There is the DVD PRO, VIDEO CAPTURE PRO, PLATINUM, PLUS, DVD CREATOR, VIDEO CREATOR. The DVD pro is supposed to be red, but instead there is also blue and for a time they made it black. But if it is glossy black then it does not support loseless flow; if it is blue it is USB 1.0; the video creator is gray, but it is also white. Warning. If it is gray it doesn't support 64bit Windows. The black dvd creator must have the little star not illuminated by the led otherwise it changes your clothes color in the video, but the led illuminated one goes in 64bit Windows...only if the box is the red one though, the green box is no good.

And sellers no, they don't take photos of the labels or specs (where depending on the Windows version the red dazzle behaves like the black one, but only from XP onwards), no they only take photos of the front of the box, of course with a killer JPEG compression where I can barely see the color

UAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I currently have 3 Seagate External 3.5" drives (2) 12TB and (1) 16tb along with (5) portable hard drives between 2TB and 4TB

I am wanting to consolidate all this into one storage solution if possible. I am going to describe how I would like it to be and maybe someone can tell me how/if this is possible

What I would like is to have all these drives in a case. My main thing is that I want it to have each drive being able to be shut off until needed. I dont want them running all the time. So maybe drive sleds with individual switches to shut them off after "ejecting" them from Windows making them removable drives. It not Windows, whatever OS that will allow them to be powered down.

I do not really use these drives everyday but maybe once or twice a week.

Current equipment avail to use :

Intel 3570k system with 8GB ram in an Antec 300 case

Also I have a Nighthawk router that is only Gigabit. Can I get (2) 2.5gb pci-e cards and a 2.5gb switch to link my main computer and the Antec computer together then use the Nighthawk as the Internet router ?

Will be flying internationally soon and I'll be taking my 8-bay nas with me. Considered checking it in or shipping it, but I think carryon is safest (it fits perfectly in my carry-on, and within the weight limit.) And I can make sure it's handled carefully

My question is: Does anyone have experience going with it through TSA? Any time I have something huge like this in my carryon I let the agent know there's a ps5/hard drive/etc. before it goes through. But a nas will look very suspect on the screen I bet and it's not something people usually travel with. Any advice is appreciated

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I've been a long time lurker, I enjoy archiving things as well although not to the extent of some people here with double digit terrabytes worth of stuff & several hundred worth of equipment solely for the practice

But, I have to ask, why does everyone here mainly use/talk about HDDs? From my understanding theyre very slow, outdated and although cheap and withstand the test of time, don't do a very good job at being quick and efficient.

Why not SSDs? My PC currently only has 4TB, but its 75% taken up, and I'm thinking of just buying another SSD.

Have a laptop for the garage. Nothing important on it. And it's old.

320gb drive is failing.

Not a big loss, but will lose the recovery section and drivers, and it's old so drivers can be annoying to come by.

What I want:

  • Throw all of this on a 160gb drive I pulled out of my junk bin.
  • Including the recovery partition or whatever the OS originally comes on for you reinstall if you need to.
  • It's only like, 45gb of stuff across all partitions.
  • I've already yanked the drive, have one USB drive reader, but don't have 2. So I need to dump the files onto my PC and then hork them back onto the other drive.
  • Need a windows solution, without rebooting or booting into Linux or anything like that, the PC I have access to needs to keep running, also Linux is a scary monster I have spent 25 years avoiding when possible.

...

I attempted to use MiniTool's Shadowmaker to back it up. It did. But when I went to restore, it complained that the new drive is smaller than the old one and refused to restore. Even though the archive is only 45gb on a 160gb drive.

Maybe this is because it is a "clone", not an "image"? I sort of know the difference.

Also, if I try to just copy the files themselves, it complains that I don't have permission. So I can't manually click 'n drag from Explorer.

...

Is there a tool that will do this? Am I just looking at the wrong keywords or wrong part of the correct tool or telling it to do the wrong thing?

I could manually create matching partition sizes I guess, but I lose grasp of what's going on there when it integrates into a laptop, with respect to what the laptop might expect to be there or what the recovery/OS partition might demand be there.

I need some advice for my particular type of ignorance. I keep thinking "This shouldn't be this hard" but, it be like it is.

I’ve been seeing this for years that they do not, but I just picked up 10 hitachi 250gb 2.5inch hdds from around 2010-2011, without 3.3v they just start beeping and refuse to spin up. Work fine with 3.3v.

I have a 2U supermicro chassis that I was wanting to use for truenas. It has 12 Hard drive slots. I was thinking about getting a LSI 9300-16I, but I realized that won't fit since its a full height card. I could get a lsi 9300-8i, but then it won't do all 12 bays. Should I just go another route and get something to expand how many sata connections that I have?

Worst case scenario I'll have to 3d print a new backplate for the chassis so it will fit full height GPUs, but horizontally.
