I am looking for external hard drive enclosure to extract my files with. My two IDE drives are: 10.2 GB IBM Quantum Fireball 1ct and 20 GB Maxtor AT Disk Drive for a HP Vectra vl420 SFF, I am looking something that can accommodate 3.5 inch drive(s) while it is a USB 2.0 connection. Does anyone know of an enclosure like this?

I need a file storage that can last for atleast 6-7 years with monthly or bimonthly use. I archive all my stuff at the end of the month or two (which is usually documents, videos and images). I thought about having a hard drive but that thing might break with the commotion going around my house and also I need a large storage of about 5tb.

Most youtube videos say that ssd go bad if you don't use them but what if i atleast use them once or twice a month? Also sometimes the data transfer is done via mobile

I have seen a couple posts or recommendations for duplicate file finders and tried a couple but they all seem to be missing one feature I would think it would be standard, a preferred folder feature. I have had too many wiped drives in my past where my default is to make a copy and store it in another dump folder. I was wondering if there was a good program that I would be say keep these files from this folder or delete all duplicates in this folder. Best I have seen so far is showing the full path so I can manually select each file.

Edit: This is a Windows PC

DatPiff was a well-known website for sharing mixtapes that started in 2005, focusing on free music, especially in the hip-hop and rap genres. It became an important place for both new and established artists to share their mixtapes, remixes, and promotional projects outside of traditional albums. Artists such as Wiz Khalifa, Lil Wayne, Meek Mill, and J. Cole used DatPiff to reach more fans and gain recognition, making it a vital platform in the hip-hop scene during the 2000s and 2010s.

The site allowed users to stream and download mixtapes for free, acting as a go-to spot for fans eager to find new music. It also attracted attention by featuring exclusive releases and working with various artists and DJs. However, as streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud began offering similar content, DatPiff's popularity started to fade.

It was archived for a while but as of September 28th, it is no longer accessible. This is really worrying for the hip-hop community because DatPiff has played an important role in its history.

It had about 365,000 mixtapes. I'm curious if anyone from the DataHoarder community has attempted to save it. I would guess it's around 50-60 TB, so I think you’d really need to love hip-hop music to be willing to give up that much storage space.

I'm an amateur archivist with a big collection of films, tapes and music to preserve. Just starting to digitize vhs (attempting 8mm also) Here's a clip from a home video that belonged to an early nike employee.

I don't have a specific question but id appreciate advice or insight. I'm curious about opinions on formatting/storage as well as thoughts on ai/upscaling software 👍

That post helped me recover a 20+ year old mini DVD I had recorded with some video of my father on it.

Figured I would pay it forward by making it easier for others to do the same.

Currently I have 5 hard drives of various sizes. 3 are from external drives. 2 are internal drives. I have a 3570k intel based system with 8GB of space that my wife is using for light office work so I have to keep Windows on the computer.

I have been looking at SAS to SATA PCIe cards that I was going to install on her computer since her MB is only SATA II. I am only using this as JBOD storage. Down the road I will change to a RAID when I retire my current computer.

What do I look for in a SAS to SATA card? I was thinking about 12GB for speed. Do I need a cache on the card or will it matter?

Are these the correct types of card to look for?

Can they be setup to be "removable"? Meaning I found an adapter that will allow me to shut off the drives via push button and then start them up again when I need to by hitting the button again. Are these know to kill hard drives because of voltage spikes when started? I can link to the item if needed.

I'm looking to jam a few hard drives into my current linux PC. It's in a Fractal Design XL Silent and if I swap the front fans out with slim ones I should be able to fit a couple HDD cages in there to store 10 drives between the GPU and the front of the case. To connect those HDDs I'd need an additional card (mobo only has 6, and some of those are shared). I was considering an HBA for this.

When looking at HBAs it seems that to get one capable of connecting all 10 drives I'd need at least a 16i one, and from what I've been reading those tend to run hot. The only slot left on my mobo in the last one, PCIE 3.0x2 and it'll be a close fit to the thunderbolt card I have above it. The thunderbolt card is in a metal shell so little to no airflow will get getting around it. The front fans will be both thinner (and therefore presumably less effective) and there will be HDDs in cages between them and the card, so it won't be able to get consistent airflow that way either.

My concern is that if I go with something like the LSI 9300-16i that I won't be able to keep it cool enough, it's become a pretty cramped case and has other hot components in it (an 7950X and 7900XTX, as well as the thunderbold card which doesn't get that hot but it's still contributing to the problem). Am I overly concerned about this (it'll still have 3 slim front fans on the front, a fan on the back rather far from the PCI slots, and a fan+radiator AIO out the top) or should I be looking for alternate solutions to connecting 10 (or potentially more but I figured I'd start with 10).

Got the Disk about 2 years ago and when I checked CDI it appears with caution with Reallocated Sector Counts being yellow. Is this something to worry about?

So far It has been running flawlessly, read and write speeds seemed to be normal when I tried moving files on and off of it.

I don't really mind replacing it, but at the same time, if possible, I would like to still use the drive to keep stuff on.

Also, can anyone advise what Current, worst and Threshold means in CDI?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Anyone using Exfat on HDD storage? Is it painfully slow, or not a huge bother? If yes, do you swap the drives around a lot?

I have a Define R6 with several HDDs in it, but I have 3 drives that I am currently not using, but would like to be able to use (and expand in the future). The server is using a Ryzen 1600 on an Asus STRIX B350-F Gaming mobo, so no access to USB type C. I use my server mostly for Plex, AudiobookShelf, Kavita, the *arrs and related programs.

I believe I want to go with a DAS instead of a NAS mostly because NASes are more expensive, but also because I live with people I don't want to have direct access to my data over the network. This is the enclosure I believe I want.

Is there any reason I should not use something along these lines? I know I am missing out on RAID, but I don't currently feel like I need it. Any advice is welcome.

Thanks

Hello everyone,

Has anyone ever shucked the FireCuda Gaming Hard Drive? The 2TB and below?

So I wanted to buy the FireCuda SSHD because it is a cool piece of tech but I never got a chance to purchase it back in the day. Now in the year of our lord 2024, I see Seagate is selling the new FireCura Gaming Hard Drive and I know for a fact the FireCuda 2.5-inch SSHD drive only comes with 2TB. So I know that any model whose 5 TB and above is probably just BarraCuda in disguise. So my question is: Are the 1TB and 2TB models actually Firecuda SSHD or just another Barracuda HDD in disguise?

Thanks for your input and have a wonderful day!

Hi All - Let me preface this by saying that I'm very new to all of this. I'm trying to repurpose my old PC as a NAS and so I'm thinking about setting up TrueNAS and then maybe Veeam to backup my current PC into the NAS.

I'm looking to install TrueNAS Scale on an old 80GB HDD but thought it may be good to check if the HDD is healthy. I downloaded the trial version of Hard Disk Sentinel and viewed the S.M.A.R.T. status but there's a warning sign next to Reallocation Event Count. However, everything else says the drive is healthy.

My Questions

  1. Should I go ahead and download TrueNAS Scale on this HDD?
  2. I would like to get a better understanding of the warning sign. Is the warning sign related to "the drive tried to examine and reallocate data sector(s) 5 times"? How come Vlaue and Worst show 100 and there doesn't seem to be any mention of 5 there?
  3. any other tips/suggestions you may have would be very helpful!

Thank you in advance!

This is the fail log of the second burn - https://pastebin.com/f371DdPb

Nothing special, just 22GB of photos, burning with PIONEER BD-RW BDR-UD04.

The drive is connected with USB. I was not even in the room, the drive did NOT move.

My PC is beefy, cutting-edge workstation.

For first 50GB blu-ray I used ImgBurn, 6x speed, it failed after 30 seconds.

For the second 25GB M-disc I used Nero Burning ROM, 4x speed, it failed after 30-40 minutes I think.

The log says "Device not available". It just disconnected, or maybe the USB bus got overload? (as I said, I did not manipulate with my PC in any way. I just let it burn the disc.)

What could be the cause of this??

Im currently trying to use httrack to download the entire Dont starve and terraria Wiki's as me and a pal like to LAN as our residence has Signal Jammer levels of crap connection.

Ive currently tried once or twice and the thing now it that it takes insanely long as well as a lot of space , after excluding mp4s, gifs , and large images . Oh and no recursion restrictions (lol dont smoke me).

I am in fact quite ignorant when it comes to this . So now i would like to hear how you guys would approach something like this?

Okay, I have encountered a problem, so I used file explorer to backup my files to an external harddrive and it opens successfully after transfer (when using teracopy it says hash mismatched and the file cant be opened), the problem is when I eject the drive and replug it back to my PC, the transferred files are gone (using file explorer not teracopy), the files transferred through teracopy with no hash mismatch errors were still there, any clue about this issue?

Recently I have moved to ZFS and realized I did set up my datasets in a bit suboptimal way. Bit with over 20 TBs of data there is not much I can do about it, given I want to snapshot/backup my volumes separately.

The datasets look like this:

  • Downloads - this is where Transmission is downloading stuff and gets picked up by the *arr apps
  • Movies - Radarr target
  • Music - Lidarr target
  • TV - Sonarr target
  • Stash - well you can imagine, curated manually and served trough Stash app

Now of course hardlinks dont work across datasets, so moving/copying files from Downloads to the target datasets takes too long and i need to keep two copies of my files, one for seeding and one for the actual collection.

I am trying to figure out how to download directly to the respective media folders with these conditions:

  • without messing up the catalogue for the *arr apps and Plex with some partial downloads or unverified stuff that gets deleted immediately after download (because of being inferior quality or something else)
  • i often modify my downloads by adding tags, sometimes removing/adding additional audio tracks etc, so i want to keep the downloaded version for seeding and my modified version for the catalogue

I was thinking about setting up a downloads target under each media folder, e.g. Movies\_downloads, Music\_downloads, etc. but I could not find a way for the *arr apps to set so this folder is handled for downloads and not as a media collection.

Any ideas how to approach this properly?

My primary goal is to backup around 150TB (currently closer to 120TB, but 150 is expected over some time) of movies. Please don't ask me why - I know it's an absurd amount, but that's why I'm posting on a sub with a "hoarder" in its name; just know it's incredibly important to me, so I want to have robust backups. Ideally, my unborn child will become a parent itself before I lose this data.

At the same time (but not as crucial ATM), I'd like to have about ~50-70TB of this data as part of my home NAS. I'll comment on this in more detail below.

Money is obviously not unimportant, but is relative, so I'll leave the budget out of the equation.

BACKUPS

Let's take 150TB as the go-to number. What would you say is the proper way to backup this data, taking into consideration backups will be cold and not used until a part of my NAS data drops dead and I have to fetch from the backup? Do I use NAS-grade 5-year-warrantied HDDs or some green/blues? How do I periodically check these backups' health? What's the procedure of duplicating data from this backup onto another, i.e. generating a 2nd backup?

I would like to avoid heavy machinery - I live in a small apartment (rent) and don't have the space for racks or some extensive cabling.

What to even use to achieve this process (I'll have to initially download all movies manually)?

NAS

This is not as important as the mentioned backups since I already use a seedbox as a Plex server and share it with some friends, but ideally I'd like to build my own NAS with a decent amount of storage (anywhere between 50 and 100TB, really) that I'd just use within my home network. Silence is a priority here - I don't want to hear clicking and/or thumping while watching a movie or working from home.

Are WD's Red Pros the way to go? Synology or DIY NAS using TrueNAS for performance+silence? I can possibly store it within a hallway closet (where the router is located as well, btw); there's no air flow, but there's decent amount of space.

tl;dr - I need to backup 150TB of movies with the possibility of introducing a 50TB+ NAS in the near future. How to approach this? What to use for the initial backup process? How to health-check cold HDDs? How to clone and replace a damaged HDD from another backup (its clone)? Best NAS option, silence-wise?

I know I ask a lot of broad questions here, but I searched through a lot of this sub and am none the wiser concerning my situation. Feel free to comment on any subset of my questions if you have some relevant experience. Very much appreciate the help :)

I’ve started scanning family documents using an Epson V550 scanner, saving them in unprocessed TIFF format. After that, I edit them in GIMP and create PDF files. The issue is that TIFF files, even with ZIP or LZW compression, take up quite a bit of space. I considered using PNG format, but the size difference is minimal. Do you have any suggestions? Maybe it’s worth saving these documents in high-quality JPG instead?
