On the right pane everything is frozen and numbers not updating, video is 2h26m but the time and frame captured on the right just freezes, while it still says capture in progress on the window, avi video itself is also captured up till 1h53m mark, same thing happened yesterday with same tape at 1h40m mark.

Does this have anything to do with capture timing options? I had first two boxes unchecked before and had sync audio to video by resampling the audio to a faster or slower rate (which caused some parts of the video to have slow motion sound), these are my current settings.

Is there a log somewhere I can look at?

I have a small server (GMKTec NucBox G3 with 1TB SSD and 32GB of RAM) plus a 2TB HDD filled with movies and tv shows (read only), a 320GB 2.5” HDD and a 480GB SSD attached via a USB dock.

I currently run Immich for images and I recently upgraded to the iPhone 16 Pro (from some old budget androids) and would like to avoid using iCloud since I can self host.

I was thinking maybe just using Immich solely to serve the files over the internet and store all images (HEIF, RAW, JPEG etc) on simple folders on my drives.

I was also thinking of encoding all my pictures and videos/movies/tv into a more modern and efficient format (AV1/JPEG-XL) to conserve space.

Basically I’m trying to make efficient use of storage as I can’t afford to buy more drives right now, since I want to prioritize getting Starlink (internet is currently 25 megashits).

What are your ideas?

I'm using Ubuntlu and HTTrack to download websites that I use, and may not continue to exist much longer.

I'm a noob when it comes to this and would like to know the appropriate limits, etc, so that I'm friendly to websites and don't tax them much.

Can a few people offer some advice here? And / or point me to understanding this more?

I have an s23 ultra 512gb and i use it to download all my 4k movies 24x7 (so even when I'm out, its still actively downloading). Once done, i just transfer to my hdd.

I read about TBW and just wondering if this also applies to phone type storage? Just thinking since phones are practically cameras now, did samsung design their storage with higher TBW limits?

ive known about this subreddit for a while now, id see it in my peripheries whilst scrolling redsit every now and then but i didnt get it. "why would you want to hoard data?" id ask myself. it just seemed like a stupid futile excercise to me.

well its been a couple months since then and some things have changed, some things happend in my life and i think i do get it now. ive started downloading movies and songs and just, media, instead of streaming and i get it. i think i get why yall spend so much time and money on hard drives and such to store all this media and such.

sorry about the rant i feel ive been rambling i think

I've started compressing my trail camera photos into videos with x264, using ffmpeg.

The results are really impressive in my opinion. A lot better than I would've guessed.

I took 8,825 10? megapixel jpegs and shrunk them down to 1080P. The quality is quite comparable, although of course there is some loss.

ffmpeg -r 60 -pattern_type glob -i '*.JPG' -s 1920x1080 -vcodec libx264 -preset fast -tune stillimage -crf 28 timelapse.mkv

$ du -s 2023-09-05-2024-02-28*
19163667 2023-09-05-2024-02-28
193889 2023-09-05-2024-02-28.mkv

Close to 1% of the original file size (18GB to 189MB). Seeking is faster. I can play slowly or quickly by changing the speed. Much faster than trying to "play" through jpegs on the fly. The video encoding was pretty fast, too.

Have any of you tried this before?

Bought a 20TB Easystore and it has US7SAT220 inside:

WD200EDGZ

IU HA570

RN: US7SAT220

PN: 2W10711

MDL: WD200EDGZ-11B9PA0

Did a bit of search and I think this US7SAT220 is actually a 22TB drive. Is there any way to "unlock" the remaining 2TB? I guess the firmware controls that I can only use 20TB.

22TB post for reference:

First of all, I don't know if this question fits here but with tons of hard drives and (some) with a good Internet connection, have you thought on putting a private cloud to share files? If yes and you can and want to share your experience it will be interesting to read.

The only thing I remember is a guy that posted on Reddit that he opened a FTP and firstly it started well (more or less) until stupid people started playing stupid games, VERY stupid people and VERY stupid games if you know what I mean.

He had to close it.

So, I have an ancient Netgear Readynas NV+. It's a beast, 4 x 2TB; 5.5TB usable. But it's too old, and too slow, to keep in production. I also have various desktops and laptops, 16TB of data minimum I'm looking to backup. I don't really have a budget yet. If it's more than I can afford I'll do it piecemeal. I'm thinking maybe a xigmanas PC with a 16TB drive on my network, and an external 16TB for offline / off-site backup? But while that would service every one of my computer setups, how do I grow it going forward? How do I setup cold storage or encryption? I kind of want to balance performance, convenience, expandability, and price... But that sounds a bit like having my cake and eating it too.

So yeah, any setups that people have had a lot of good OR bad luck with, I'd love to hear your story. Nothing in the 100TB+ range though, I'm not looking to build anything that massive. Thanks for your time.

HBA Card question for Plex Server Unraid build in a Supermicro SuperChassis 846B with SAS2 Backplane…

Am I correct in my thinking below for an HBA card?

I have a question for my plex server Unraid build in a Supermicro SuperChassis 846B. The backplane is BPN-SAS2-846EL1 backplane.

I am looking at the Broadcom HBA 9500-16i as the HBA card.

This is my motherboard but I can change it if need be - ASUS TUF Gaming Z790-Plus WiFi LGA 1700(Intel14th & 13th & 12th Gen) ATX gaming motherboard - https://www.newegg.com/asus-tuf-gaming-z790-plus-wifi-atx-motherboards-intel-intel-z790-lga-1700/p/N82E16813119618?Item=N82E16813119618

I was going to go for the Supermicro AOC-S2308L-L8i PCIe but my motherboard ports would not allow full bandwidth from what I understand? PCIe 3.0 x4 is about 31.5Gbps of bandwidth which is a bottleneck. Where as if I get the Broadcom HBA it is PCIe 4.0 x4 is 63Gbps so that is much better than PCIe 3.0. Also, the SAS bandwidth is 48Gbps so that's sort of the limit anyway. 24 HDD’s.

I will then have extra SATA ports on the Broadcom which seems like a good idea if I run some SSD’s down the line? My MOBO only has 4 SATA ports currently. Could I use the extras on the 9500-16i if wanted even after attaching to backplane? Or bad idea?

Any other HBA card recommendations for me?

Also is this a bad place to buy it? https://www.ebay.com/itm/144729881871

Heavenforbid it comes not in IT mode or I need to update firmware, is it hard to do? Is there a guide someone recommends?

Is there a way to index all folders, subfolders, and files USB flash drive? I'm looking for a program or something that can make a list or directory of everything on a flash drive. If there was a way to make the list on Word or Excel, that would help too!

Hello. I deleted a volume on my hard disk. Then I extended another volume and after that it said that the basic disk will convert to dynamic disk. So, I pressed ok. After that I see double of 1 drive. But in my computer, there is shown single drive each. This happened twice.

I tried both easeus and minitool partition software but there is no option to 'extend' volume.

Please help. This is what I see. Image screenshot below. I can't upload pictures in this post.

So, I'm trying to get an actual backup solution going for my Unraid NAS and have hit a snag. My plan is to make local backups on a different disk (in case of disk failure) and also remote backups in case of like, an apartment fire, natural disaster, theft, etc. I want to have the backups encrypted so that I don't have to worry about "trusting" the cloud provider. My actual threat model is not particularly dire, nor is anything I'm storing illegal (personal photos, backup of my main PC's documents folder, backups of Unraid appdata, etc.), but my plan is to make remote backups on both Backblaze B2 as well as a VPS that I rent, possibly OneDrive as well (we have the family 365 plan but don't use all 6 accounts).

I already have the local backups running at various times, and I have the log folder remotely backed up now, but the log folder is small so any encryption/uploading is fast. When I start remotely backing up bigger folders, ranging from 10s of GBs to upwards of 1 or 2 TBs, the time will matter more. So my question is, should I encrypt the local backup, then just copy that over to the remote storage? Or should the local backup be a separate copy, and the remote backup be a separate encryption that backs up directly to the cloud provider?

I'm using Duplicacy atm, so I have each a local and a BackBlaze storage. My one schedule backs up and encrypts all of the shares locally, then a separate schedule backs up and encrypts just the syslogs share and puts it on BackBlaze. Should I do this same thing with my other shares, or would it be better to use the Copy function to just copy the local backup to BackBlaze instead? I can't figure out what best practice is, and even writing this out, I feel like it's not super coherent, lol, so hopefully someone knows what I mean.

Thanks in advance!

Hey there folks 👋

I’m currently looking for a solution to automatically back up one or more folders locally on a different hard drive within the same Windows system/PC. I need some kind of versioning feature, as well as basic settings like backup interval and the number of versions to retain.

I’ve searched online but may be using the wrong keywords, so I thought I’d ask here. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! :)

Hi! I just recently transferred 200GB of important data off of my Mac onto a SanDisk Extreme SSD. I browsed this page and a few others and would just like to know the basics of making sure my files do not get corrupted or disappear. I am veryyyyyy unknowledgeable when it comes to this stuff, so if possible, please explain in very basic terms lol.

What I could understand from a few threads was A. That you should power on the SSD frequently to keep it active and B. that you should read the data frequently... but I don't know what exactly that means lol.

Is there anything else I can do to ensure these files stay on this SSD? I'm scared to delete them from my Mac LMAO.

I've had this problem on and off for a couple of years. I have an OWC Thunderbay 8 with 8x 16TB drives in a RAID 1+0 array through SoftRAID. It's backing up continuously to Backblaze. Every few minutes, each drive seems to spin up and then subsequently go back to sleep. I've tried validating the RAID, restarting the computer, ejecting the entire bay, and adjusting settings in Backblaze. Does anyone know how I can get this to stop? Not only is it annoying, but it can't be good for the drives. Please help!

So I've always purchased used Enterprise graded hard drives for my data storage needs, but I recently bought some a pair of HGST ALA640 6GB Helium Filled hard drives and these are by far the most heavily used hard drives I've ever received.

They have 80.000 hours each. 60~ power cycles. Manufactured May 2014, so over a decade old now. Usually the Enterprise drives I get off eBay have 40~k hours and are 4-6 years old. I usually buy the cheapest drive I can find from a major seller (in this case Enterasource) but it seems like used HDD prices are rising and apparently they are selling older drives that I wouldn't think would normally be resold. All because of "increased demand from AI" because of course its AI ruining everything.

Would you guys trust these drives for ANYTHING? I was going to use them as backup storage (I manually copy all my files to my backup drives using a dock, and then they are stored powered down until needed or its time to update the backup).

To add to all that these are 1st generation helium filled hard drives, are there any actual reliable data points on how long a helium drive will last before its loses too much of its helium to function or the seals fail?

I'm running a full format on each of them right now to see if any hidden issues are found, so sketchy.

/dev/disk/by-id/ shows both the drives that are on the 1 pcie card (drive-1 and drive-1_1), but I cannot for the life of me figure out a way to make them seperate so I can use both the drives. does anyone know a way to "assign" a drive ID to a different mount point? Currently it only shows 1 usable in lsblk etc

I currently have two hard drives (2 TB + 1 TB) that I plan on using for Plex/Photos and Photos respectfully and I'm trying to decide what size enclosure to get.

I'm looking for external is because I would like to occasionally plug in the 1TB drive for backup and my case doesn't have enough space for internal storage.

I was thinking either two or four slots since I'll want the movie drive to constantly be plugged in, and at least one additional slot for easily connecting the backup drive. I don't want to get anything too big because I'm moving country in a year or two and I'm trying to make sure my belongings fits in carry on and checked.

Any recommendations?

I understand we can't generalise an entire brand or company since different people will have different experience but still are there any particular models that you won't risk it again? What're the most popular ones around the 1-2TB range?
