Do you backup your data to the cloud? If so, which cloud do you use/recommend and how much storage do you have?

Model Number: SDSSDE81-4T00-G25 SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD

I am looking to buy a portable SSD for my father who’s been trying to wrap his head around storage issues for sometime now.

I wanted to know reviews and opinions about this product from reliability standpoint and pricing aspect.

If you are a user or have experience:

  • How long do these last ?
  • SanDisk says up to 2000 MB/s. How much transfer speed do you get on an optimal Windows Laptop (8GB RAM) running Windows 11 ?
  • How many write cycles do these support ? (Is each copy operation considered a write cycle? Or is this scoped to only formatting)
  • Any other suggestions are welcome.

Thanks !

Looking for the best SSD…

Looks like it is Samsung!? But is there anything that is rugged and priced good? I can't seem to find anything decent. I looked up camel camel camel, to see what would be the best price for the Samsung T7 shield rugged 4TB portable SSD.

Yet it is more today than it was in 2023, with the looming changes and tariffs coming are rather buy it now and hoard a hard drive lol any suggestions?

Thank you in advance for your help

Looking to get a new ssd to work off of. Was thinking of getting the crucial p3 ssd and throwing it in an enclosure as an alternative of buying the crucial x10 or Samsung t7.

I’ve seen three ssd enclosures (one from satechi and two from ugreen that both have fans.

Has anyone had any experiences with any of these enclosures? With the two ugreen enclosures having fans, I’m not worried about them creating noise but rather more curious as to if I should be worried about the fan being a potential failure point in the future, is this a valid concern? Also how effective is the fan and the thermal pad over the satechi just having a thermal pad for heat dissipation is it just marketing or does it actually make a noticeable difference? Also, are diy ssd any less reliable than something already ready out of the box as I know the t7 is water and dust resistant but I’m assuming an enclosure i put together myself wouldn’t be as safe?

For reference this is my first ssd so anything will be an upgrade over my old hdd! I’ll be using a MacBook Pro 2017 model which has thunderbolt 3.

Based on the cost building the enclosure myself over buying a prebuilt Samsung t7 would cost roughly 60-70$ more so not saving money building it myself but I am getting 3500mbs speeds over 1050mbs of the Samsung! Am I making a mistake? Should I just be getting a Samsung or crucial x10 or is building one worth the extra cost for better performance? Thanks for the help, this is a big chunk of change for me as a student so wanted to get the right decision down :)

Hello, I've got what seems to be a doozy in my inexperienced mind.

I have a forum on the site proboards that I used to use all the time years ago, and it's absolutely jam-packed with memories that I want to hold onto, for both the purposes of reminiscing, as well as reference material for a novel I am writing. I have been lucky so far, in that the site is still standing without any input for years on end, however, I fear there may be a chance that luck could run out at some point and leave me in a seriously rough spot.

I want to archive the information of the entire forum for this purpose, however, from the little I've seen, my only options so far seem to be using the wayback machine's archive feature to only capture a single page at a time, which would take ages of work, even if I were to narrow down the pages to just ones that may relate to my interests and needs, and even then, hindsight might bite me in the rear if I neglect to pick a certain page I might need later.

Is there such a way for me to archive the entire forum at once and store its contents on a drive or something? I do happen to have access to the founder of the forum, whom also has full access to it, if that helps at all.

Thank you very much for any and all advice.

Does anyone have any input? Mainly using this as a backup of my SSD to store pictures. I read that the Seagate drives might be better for data recovery if worst comes to worst since it's a STAT drive. But I hear WD is quite reputable. I understand that all HDD fail over time, this is simply a backup of my 2TB T7 Shield

I'm looking to download and backup (or even just watch, uninterrupted) news broadcasts which get added to the IA TV New Archive as caption searchable videos. This would save me hundreds of hours of manually playing and capturing in real time old DRM protected from the broadcaster WMC DVR clips I've been saving for years. The problem with this is that the caption search feature by default splits the videos into 60 second segments, which makes viewing a segment rather tedious.

This is the link i want to download https://archive.org/details/BBCNEWS_20170614_080000_BBC_News_Special/start/1140/end/1200

If someone can find a way and download the full thing and send it me that would be really appreciated

I have a 12 year old 32GB USB drive that I intentionally purchased as SLC due to it being 'the best' way to store data in a non-spinning disk way. it's still going strong and today registered about 150-160MB/s sustained write. Presumably pretty 'big' silicon, i.e. 45nm or something ,plus it's SLC. So what kind of longevity should I expect and why can't I find anything like this on the market today?

For context, I only run Optane as OS drives (various 900p, 905p, P1600X across the estate)

Doing my first build with Jonsbo N5 and planning on buying 4 12TB rectified drives from SPD running in raidz2. Will most likely expand this to 8 drives in this pool in future as I need more space.

I noticed that HC520 has multiple listing and all of them have the Power Disable Pin. The youtube video linked shows a simple fix of applying the tape. Wanted to know if there is anything I should be aware of for this? Given that my enclosure is new it should work without the hack? Also why the multiple listing for HC520? What should I be looking at to determine the difference between them?

I am leaning towards the HGST Ultrastar primarily because it does not have multiple listings and the power disable pin :). So I thought I would see what the community says about the HC520s.

Also any pointers on what I should be checking once i get the HDDs? I have never run used drives before so have never done any tests on them. What kind of checks should I be running on them before I put them in play. I will be running Debian on my system.

Hello everybody,

I ran a recovery session on Disk Drill a couple of years ago and decided to save everything from that recovery session. It successfully recovered a partition from the disk that had been accidentally deleted, but then it also created this massive other folder where I guess it put a series of files that were corrupt or unsalvageable. It put them in folders like Archives, Video, Images, and Music, with each folder containing subfolders labeled by extension and hundred of files in each folder. For example, one is Video\wmv\file00001.wmv, file00002.wmv, etc etc. I tried to find any evidence as to what these files were/are, but no dice. There's no runtime, just a size and filetype. I tried running these files through dupeguru and Czykawka, but the problem is neither program can even hash these files because they aren't readable. However, some of these files are 4gb in size, so there MUST be something there...right? Anyway, I have no idea what to do with these files. I even tried a program called Winmerge to see if I could use binary data to analyze these files, but apparently Winmerge can only compare files one at a time, which is ludicrous to think I'm going to compare one corrupt file to other files one at a time by looking at the binary data side by side. Does anyone have an idea as to what i can do to identify ANYTHING about these files?

Thank you all in advance.

I am trying to get a new storage server stood up. I have a x12sth-f motherboard. I was trying to adjust the fan settings so that they would stop spinning up and down. After trying many things, I decided to update the bios and bmc firmware. I even went as far as reflashing the ME firmware as well. This is what i currently have:

|| || |BIOS|BIOS Date: 07/16/2024 Ver 2.0| |BIOS ME|86.0.3.604| |BMC|01.05.03|

Anyway, come to find out, I think I can only set one value on the fans, which is probably fine. But, I noticed that the CPU temp and other sensors are no longer showing. I only see a few that actually work, like System and Peripheral Temp.

Anyone have any idea why I can no longer see the CPU sensors? I have tried reflashing everything. Making sure restart as well. I am at a lost at this point.

So, I have had an Orico 5-bay for 2 years and it's garbage. Bad speeds, takes a horrendous amount of time to reconnect if the drives sleep, and now it sometimes it isn't being recognized by my raspberry pi. this one https://pt.aliexpress.com/item/1005007344507959.html

So now or I change for a better storage unit with multiple bays and that accepts any format I want to format the disk, or I just start mounting a NAS from scratch. Anyone has a good recommentation? I just need something reliable and that doesn't take too much space.

I am really dumb first of all. from https://github.com/hxim/paq8px, it says it's experimental and doesn't recommend using it to archive stuffs. What are the risks of doing so?

Another question, the readme from the github above says i can grab the latest exe file for windows os from https://encode.su/threads/3952-Multithreading-paq8px but this link is a forum with 89 pages. I can't find any single executable files in the last 3 pages cause this Gotty guy seems to be very talkative. Can you find the latest exe from that forum for me?

So, currently I have 6 14TB drives in hardware RAID 6 in a 12-bay server (around 50TB usable space iirc). I'm really debating pulling the trigger on a bunch of those 20TB drives on sale at Best Buy right now. With how many I'm thinking about getting, there wouldn't be enough free drive slots to set up the new drives at the same time as the current ones and then transfer them over. What's the best way to set up a completely new array of drives on the same machine and transfer all of my data? Would I basically have to set up a third set of drives on a NAS somewhere and copy my data from my main machine to there, then set up the new drives in RAID and then copy my data back from the NAS to the new RAID array?

Also, what would be the best program to do that? I've been using rsync to run backups onto some other drives in the machine, but if I want to clone the entire drive I assume something else might be better.

Edit: Of note, I actually have most of the data from the RAID array backed up on drives in 5 of the other 6 slots. Unless you think I'll need to back up more data than rsync can copy, it should be quick to update that if using a third set of drives is the only solution

Bonus topic: Convince me why I should switch from RAID 6. RAID 10 seems like a colossally inefficient use of drives (esp. since you can still lose the array if 2 fail, theoretically) and the chances of two drives failing during a rebuild in RAID 6 seems pretty unlikely. I like the read speed increase from striping that RAID provides.

TL;DR: Can I use a SATA docking station as internal storage for a custom TrueNAS build?

I’m planning to build a NAS using some old computer hardware we have at work, primarily for cold storage. I’m still learning about NAS setups (though I do have a personal one already). I’m wondering if it’s feasible to use a SATA docking station that supports around 5 drives (like those you can buy on Amazon) and connect it directly to the internal SATA data port on the motherboard of my old computer. My current NAS uses three drives, but it has three dedicated SATA (power/data) ports on the motherboard. Would a docking station work in a similar way?

If so, I'd love some suggestions! Most of the SATA docks I can find are USB-C. If that will work — awesome! If not, I wonder if there are docks that have SATA data, rather than USB-C.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I should clarify that I realize TrueNAS (Debian) will technically allow me to use external drives as storage, but I'd really rather have dedicated storage that can't easily be removed. I hope to mount the drives/docking station to/with the computer in the server room.

I don't know much about this. I have a hard drive where I keep a ton of movies/series, and I've been using it quite often, plugging it to my Nvidia shield to watch stuff twice a day, averagely. Am I killing the HD?

Whether it's internal storage, external storage, NASes, or anything in between... let me see some pics of all your storage. It's been too long since we've had a thread like this.

Hej! This is maybe a weird request but I have my reasons!

Problem: I built a small backup NAS which will be going to my parents place. They live in a different country and I am planing to visit them. I was thinking to bring the components with me the next time I visit them, but the case will be a problem...

  • CPU + MB + other stuff can be put in a suitcase
  • HDDs can be stored in their original packaging and put in my backpack and onto the cabin with me
  • I looked for cases at my parents place, but there isn't much of a market there
    • I wanted it to be kinda presentable, so old PC cases are not an option (for now...)

Does someone have recommendations for cases that can be kinda disassembled, so I can store them in the suitcase during the flight? Designwise I was thinking of something along the Jonsbo N series, but I am open for other recommendations!

If there isn't such a thing, a PC case with a few HDD bays should maybe do the trick, but that would be my last resort.
