I buy hard drives in pairs usually, one has the name of a Pokemon the other has the name of a “Pokemon-mirror”

I decided to change my naming convention after reading something here but I can not remember how it works…

The names are A101 and A102

I don't remember what these numbers represent. My guess is that odd number or mirror. I'm so confused…

HostBrr DirectAdmin Storage (capacity from 500GB to 16TB)

https://my.hostbrr.com/order/main/packages/BF2024/?group_id=63&currency=EUR

This is basically web storage. Probably the cheapest prices currently, even compared with Hetzner Storage Box, iDrive e2 etc.

  • 7 EUR ($7.77) for 500GB for 12 months
  • 15 EUR for 1TB for 12 months (or 1.25 EUR/$1.30 per month per TB, when paying upfront yearly)
  • 27 EUR for 2TB for 12 months (or equivalent of 1.125 EUR per month per TB)

using the code BFBOX, as indicated on the page.

Is quite slow currently (2 or 3MB/sec upload speed), but may settle down in the next few days, once people have done their initial file transfers/uploads.

Don't use as your primary storage, as no resilience. This is cheap and dirty.

Anyone have one of these and notice a high-pitched noise? Were you able to get rid of it by switching the power adapter?

I haven't converted in a few years but lately got back into converting VHS tapes to digital and have come across a problem that I wasn't having before. For context I'm using OBS studio and on Windows 11. When converting a VHS tape, the first 20 minutes or so is ok but eventually at some point the audio starts becoming delayed by a few seconds and never syncs back up to normal.

What is causing this issue? Is it my VCR or is it something in OBS?

Also, another issue.. there is a bar at the bottom of the image that is kind of annoying but it's not too drastic. Is this because of the VCR? Should I just get a different VCR all together?

My current storage solution is two external hard drives that are left unplugged from my PC unless data is being actively written to/pulled from them. One of them is left plugged in (though it doesn't spin up unless it's USB'd to the computer) which I consider my primary drive, while the other is completely unplugged from everything which I consider my data backup.

Unfortunately, my current strategy for keeping said backup is that every half a year or so, I plug in both drives, delete the entirety of the backup drive, the copy/paste the entire primary drive over and let it copy overnight. I am entirely sure that this is an utterly stupid solution, but I have no idea what the next best option is for my kind of setup.

I could go into each folder and copy/paste only the new files over, but there are way too many folders for that to be a reasonable option. I could just have Windows ignore duplicate files when I copy/paste, but often I have updated files/file names for files that replace the originals, which wouldn't be deleted in that case, and I don't want to have multiple copies of the same files.

What I'm hoping for is that there's some application or in-built program that I've missed hearing about that can highlight only the files that aren't in one hard drive or the other so I can just deal with those files piecemeal. I'm not a huge fan of automated solutions, as I'd rather have intentional oversight in the event that I actually wanted to keep an old version of a file. I'm also not looking for any paid applications, since it's just personal stuff and I'm not bothered enough by my current solution to spend cash on it.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and found a decent solution?

I'm looking for a tool to "de-rasterize" scanned PDFs. As in, convert the heavy images it's made of with lightweight text and structured elements.

https://preview.redd.it/2mklk9k6hc4e1.png?width=2516&format=png&auto=webp&s=f2ae81b43004ef0436d89eab79db3fb536d97a24

Replacing the scanned images by text and basic shapes could help compress the libraries of PDF's I have by 95%+.

I tried Adobe Acrobat's .docx converter. It did a mediocre job. I'm not looking for a perfect 1:1 replica, but it's probably outdated in this age of ML and AI tools. Are there any better tools or pipelines to do as described above?

Can't seem to find a straight answer on this. Be gentle, I come from the land of hardware raid and Windows Storage Spaces where the answers are pretty straightforward

I'm putting the finishing touches on a new home server and have planned to set it up as a RAIDZ1 or RAIDZ2. Currently have drives for a Z1 with the capacity I want, but am considering snagging another drive to make it a Z2 with the same amount of storage. In either case, I'm not using all the available drive bays to start and would like to confirm the steps necessary for expanding the array if I ever need to. I've seen discussion that it's possible (after it apparently not being a thing for the longest time) and a tutorial on how to do it in TrueNAS, but this is not going to be running TrueNAS/Scale or Unraid. It's going to be running straight Debian or Ubuntu server, so terminal commands are necessary

Before anyone says it, I know RAID5/RAIDZ1 aren't recommended. I'm ok with the risk. This is replacing a NUC with an external USB hard drive. Being able to recover anything from the remaining drives if 1 fails is still better than losing everything if my current single hard drive craps out

Please also don't try to convert me to TrueNAS/Scale or Unraid. I used Scale once and hated it for my purposes. Also not interested in trying Unraid

Originally I was looking for 3 20tb for a NAS but upon seeing the warranty differences I'm now considering 18tb. Can anyone tell me their experience with the 2 yr warranties?

Looking to stock up and slowly upgrade my nas and curious at to what others think about drive marketing.

So I’ve been reading all my doujinshis from nhentai, and i want to archive them in case that website goes down. What I want is kind of make my computer a server where I put all my content and then being able to view it on my iPhone. I’ve got OneDrive but I don’t want to use it as I share a subscription with my family. Sorry if it’s a stupid question I just want better alternatives than OneDrive.

I have been searching for hours on the web for a method to download YouTube videos for data hoarding purposes. Every single website I have tried only gives me the download in terrible quality and I have been searching for quite a while.

What is the go to method for downloading YouTube videos? I am on a Mac if that helps.

I don't know if this is the right sub for this, but here's my dilemma

Initially I thought I would setup a truenas scale on my old(but relatively new) laptop, and connect that to a das which has 3 16tb harddrives with one parity. The thing is I also want to play games on that laptop(because that is what I currently use that laptop for, and my new laptop I had to get cause of work and I have been using the old laptop as a gaming laptop connected to tv ever since), now I'm debating on doing it in truenas or windows. Id really appreciate your advice on what to do, I only play elden ring and cities skylines

The laptop specs are

I7-12700h

Rtx 3060

16gb ddr5 4800mhz

And the harddrives are

1 Seagate exos 16tb 2 wd ultrastar 16tb

I have some e-book files and starting to feel the needs to come up with a great way to categorize them. I want the categories to be clear so that if i were looking for a specific book, i don't have to waste time visiting more than one category.

What's your way?

So as the title says it's upgrade time, my Qnap 251 has served me well but I find it's slow as snails CPU infuriating and the new Qnap os runs miserably slow on it...

So I want to upgrade with hardware being a priority for the price (2-bay unit but will consider 4-bay) , I mostly use the Nas for storage and shares. Plus my home cloud to stash photos and run a few containers on their ..

I'm seeing some good deals for Ugreen and TerraMaster better than equivalent Synology or Qnap models what are your guys take on this brands , is the better hardware with the lower costs ?

Hey folks,

I've been on the lookout for some LTO 8 tapes, and I've noticed a bit of a price hike recently. Used to snag them for about $54.99 each on B&H and NewEgg, but now they're going for $78.40. That's about a 43% increase! 😬

I checked eBay, and while I found a seller offering a decent price, the tapes come without boxes or packaging. Plus, if I want to buy 30 tapes, I'd have to test each one upon arrival, which seems a bit impractical.

Do any of you have recommendations for trusted sites or sellers where I can grab these at a reasonable price? Would really appreciate any advice or personal experiences!

Thanks!

Hi. I have a new WD My Book 8TB. I'll be using it on a Windows Lenovo Laptop, for storing large collections of movies, personal files, sociala backup etc etc.

I already put on some large data and now, while I was coming data from my internal disk I noticed that what was 1GB on the source disk turned out to be 7GB on the destination HDD. Went to check it and discovered the file system is exFAT (while on internal disk it's NTFS).

I'm thinking to download what was copied to it somewhere else and format it to NTFS, as with so much data loss my 8TB could effectively end up storing just 1TB+ of actual data.....

Is that the best option/idea or did I miss something?

Hello, Just wanted some help with an error I've only recently received. When adding a new link or updating from a previously used link, I get the following error.

Error: Unexpected error. Couldn't find target element(s) from the given parent html node in url: "url of website" {targetLoc: [Css-Selector Tag Trace: article.post-card a ]}

I am able to access the website as well as download the contents from other fetchers such as JDownloader 2.

I've gone through the guides and FAQs on WFDownloader website but couldn't find anything.

Any suggestions as to where I can start to solve the issue would be greatly appreciated = )

Hi, I am trying to check if my estimates are right. I have about 400K files and about 4TB of files that I rarely need frequent access. I am using AWS calculator and getting about $20 for put requests and $48/year for storage. Is this in the ball park?

Also, how long does it typically take to upload (my internet speed is 1Gbps)?

Thanks.
