Do you just buy your drives brand new from retail, do you buy used drives, do you shuck? Probably all of the above for some of you, but what have you found is the most cost efficient way to get storage?

I'd like to know if it is possible to archive a free series on Comics Kingdom? Here are the methods I've tried:

Hi r/DataHoarder,

I’m upgrading my NAS from 4TB drives to 16TB, and I could use some advice. After researching, it seems ServerPartDeals is the community favorite for reliable used HDDs, but I noticed that Recertified Seagate drives on Amazon are similarly priced. Here’s where things get tricky.

I have a large Amazon gift card balance that could cover about 1.5 drives, so I’m considering buying two from Amazon and the last one from ServerPartDeals. However, I’ve read mixed reviews about Amazon's recertified drives, with some reporting a slightly higher rate of issues. On the other hand, ServerPartDeals seems to have a stronger reputation for reliability, though at a higher cost to me personally.

My questions for the community:

  • Would you think it worth leveraging my Amazon gift card balance to cover most of the cost, even if it might involve more risk or hassle?
  • Has anyone here had recent experience with Seagate Recertified drives from Amazon? If so, how was the reliability?

I’d love to hear your thoughts or experiences to help me make an informed decision. I’ve included a picture below of the Amazon drive in question. Thanks for your input!

Hello, I am relatively new to this kind of thing (yes I HAVE searched the internet) and I started out by downloading YT videos off of Newpipe. However, if I try to download beyond HD (which looks crappy when you look at it horizontally), the video lags even as a file. I am trying to figure out a way to get around this issue, and uh, is there? Basically, the question is: How do I download videos in a way thats low-storage, high-quality, and doesn't lag in 4k. Yes, I HAVE looked it up but I'm still confused. I know I'm supposed to use AV1 and H.264 but I'm not sure if A. I already am and B. if it will lag in 4k.

I currently have a LaCie 6big Thunderbolt 3 84tb with 7 sets of 6x Ironwolf Pro 14tb drives. 6 of the RAIDs contain about 68tb each of high res video footage with the 7th set unused as of now. I rarely need to access the older footage, but do occasionally work off the current RAID with small editing tasks and transfers. I only swap out the drives maybe 4 times a year if someone needs footage from years ago.

Total footage currently is 400tb. We can go with larger drives to cut down on the number of RAID sets needed, as the footage doesn't need to stay assigned to it's current batch.

The new setup will likely be the primary use RAID and the old one will be the 'backup'. We prioritize safety over speed and access, as it's more important that the footage isn't lost.

Is there a solution that seems best? I honestly haven't kept up with the current products since we set this up about 7 years ago, so I'm wondering if there is something that makes a little more sense than just purchasing another LaCie 6big. Thanks in advance!

Update: u/jetboy01 noted that I used the wrong term. It's "canary file", not "honeypot file"

I was daydreaming of a way to prevent ransomware from destroying the good backup files stored on another drive or server.

I was thinking of having lots of honeypot files sprinkled around various directories on my server. Each important directory would get its own honeypot file.

Before any backup job begins, a batch file would check all the honeypot files. If any honeypot file fails a file comparison, the backup job is never started.

Unfortunately, I am not familiar enough with how ransomware works. If it is dumb and encrypts all the files it finds as quickly as possible (in the pursuit of maximum damage) then at least one or some of the honeypot files would get encrypted. And then my low-tech defense would work.

But if they want to be sneaky and do a few files at a time, then my honeypots won't necessarily get hit and my test would unwisely let a backup job start.

Will this partly baked idea work?

This is more a fun build I suppose as I already have a 36 bay sitting in my rack. I'm thinking this will be a slightly easier system to transport but it's primary home is stage 1 backup/media server.

What do you guy's think I should put in it?

I'm finally sick and tired of Storage Spaces and the absolute dogshit overhead for parity, as well as the fact that if you don't spend entirely too long messing with configs via PowerShell, your write speeds/random performance is going to be ass as well. That being said, do y'all have any suggestions for temporarily shuffling around my data when I nuke Windows and start over with TrueNAS? Currently I have a mixture of 2TB and 1TB HDDs that should get me enough coverage to temporarily offload things to (would love to pick up LTO6 tape but that is completely out of the budget), and I would like to make sure things don't get corrupted or lost in the process.

I am looking for just a basic tool that will back-up my RAID 5 to an external drive.

I have two external drives that I keep offline and offsite and every couple of month I get a reminder to bring one of them home than I back-up everything onto it. My data on my RAID array is not very frequently updated/changed so I am comfortable with only backing up every couple of months.

Anyways, Currently I just reformat the external drive then recopy everything onto it however there has got to be some free software that will let me just copy over any new or changed data?

The simpler the software the better. I dont need any fancy features with monthly subscriptions.

I have an old 8 bay Synology Nas that I have been happy with, but it is over 10 years old and time to replace it. There is no doubt I am a fellow data hoarder now. Lol

I have about 200TB of movies and TV shows in 4k for myself that I transcode down to 1080p with Plex on my primary gaming PC for streaming to friends and family. Sometime 6-10 concurrent streams all transcoding at the same time.

I have about 16 drives all of various sizes up to 24TB each spanned across multiple PC's looking to be able to scale to 1PB or greater as time goes on.

I have been looking at a 24bay qnap that has an extra slot for a video card so that I don't have to use my gaming PC. I am sure I will be going the rackmount option, but wanted to get everyone's advice. Especially around the transcoding needs.

I appreciate any recommendations you can provide.

I have a couple 9211-8i cards and a 16e and a 9305-16e. I'm looking to see what SAS expander cards work best with these to expand SATA ports wihile avoiding multiple HBA's on a single machine.

What cards are best for this? Are they a dime a dozen on Ebay like a lot of other cards? Are there cheap backplanes that you get to work with them?

I'm working on cramming things into old cases right now, but I might just make a DIY case if I can get a backplane or the cables figured out. Thanks.

I just want to share this horrible experience I'm having with iDrive. I had a 5TB account with them and over ran it by a couple hundred GB for a month. They charged my $277 in penalties! I upgraded and assumed the offered upgrade was the next level but it was two levels up. That part is on me for not checking but they are evil. Now, I am unable to contact them to discuss this. Phone keeps sending me to voicemail or cutting off entirely.

My actual DVD drive , while it works, has it's eject button like not wanting to work (Sure, i could just do it from W10 instead) but i thought it'd also be a great time to give it a proper retire and put in a worthy, new one

However, in Spain, it's very hard to find a proper drive that works for a long time (Amazon reviews says some internal/external drives died after 3 months, others said other things...)

We don't have Pioneer, that's for sure, besides the usual weird named ones that one should evade like the plague.

Uses would be for reading and writting CD/DVDs and , if possible, 1080p BluRay rippings for backup

What we seem to have are:

Internal:

ASUS BW-16D1HTBW-16D1HT Internal 105€

LG-BH16NS40 Internal 123€ (3rd party seller)

LG BH16NS55 Internal 96,71€ (3rd party seller)

External:

Verbatim Slimline UHD 4K with USB-A adapter B07MTP9VKX 110€ (Sent by Amazon but 3rd party seller)

Not sure if there are any other trustworthy externals, tho

Any guidance, please?

I'm considering building NAS using trueNAS. I'm new to this so have few questions before buying storage:

Can storage be mixed? for example: i put 1x1tb, 2x500gb hdd's and 1x1tb ssd. Is my data safe when one of drives fail?

Speed is not priority.

Trying to find a good 4 bay DAS enclosure to access a photo and video archive on, any suggestions?

Is there a 4 bay version of the QNAP TL-D800C?

Any help would be great, thanks.

I know that the write speed for raid 6 is going to be lower than raid 5 due to writing 2 parity instead of 1.

How much slower would it actually be? I'm mostly going to be doing containers and maybe a vm here or there, would I really notice a difference? What kinds of services would I notice the difference and use raid 5 over raid 6? Only AI I would be using is detection for my cameras.

Have my main data drives (and their hardware failure backups) all in my desktop and planning to setup my NAS as the 2nd level backup for them. I have several antivirus/anti-malware softwares I've been using for years and they both have Anti-Ransomware security features. But as we know, nothing is bulletproof and any directly attached storage on the computer can be affected (so in this case both my main data and backup drives as well). So I need to have my 2nd level backup serve as my ransomware backup solution as well in case my direct attached drives get infected one day. I figured my NAS is a good way to set it up and automate it as well.

However, I have recently read that there are malware/ransomware out there that can even scan and infect network drives that are on the same network as the computer that gets infected so this has me concerned that my NAS may not be as effective of a solution for ransomware protection as I think.

Have any of you guys considered setting up backups for ransomware protection purposes before? If so, what is your method to ensure maximum protection?

Any tips/recommendations would be most appreciated.

EDIT: Lots of good tips/ideas in the comments. Just to clarify a little further, at this time I'm just trying to see if there's any way to have the backups be a secure automated process (or at least semi-automated where maybe I only need to press one button myself to start the backup after ensuring what I'm backing up is clean) rather than manual efforts requiring disconnection. But thanks all for the tips so far, all great ideas and I love to hear what you guys do!

I have a hot swappable 5 bay enclosure. I usually only have two or three drives on any given time. Because for some reason my brain is telling me if I have all five on at once something terrible could go wrong. Am I just being ridiculous? I also saw a picture of a guy that had would appear to be 30 hard drives actively rolling on his pc. I just care a lot about my data and wondering if having multiple drives on could ever possibly cause damage or an issue?

I’m thinking about creating a NAS server at home using HexOS and I want a NAS that’s capable of using 2.5 inch SAS enterprise ssd’s.
