So, finally bought two 12TB drives refurbished drive. Tested one in Windows using Hard Disk Sentinel, doing a full write and read.

2nd drive, because the Jellyfin server is on all the time, running ubuntu server, I thought maybe I'll scan the other drive on that. But, I'm new to Linux and no idea what software I could use on it, to test the drive.

Any ideas?

Apologies if this has been asked before but I didn't find a clear answer.

I've just purchased a few manufacturer recertified 20TB drives from ServerPartDeals for unraid/cold storage use for all my important data. External HDDs were my previous choice and my previous verification method was to run smart scans followed by the laborious effort of filling each drive to max capacity to ensure all sectors can be written to. Then I'd reformat and write my real data to the drive.

With manufacturer recertified drives, is the max capacity step still necessary? If so, is there another method or tool that might speed up the process?

Hello community members, I have some of my music library in m4a format but i want to replace that tracks with flac files. Now I've a list of tracks, I used to use streamrip but recently it started stopped working (yes i have tried old and new version secrets).I use squit dot wtf for a while but music library is large and copying track name into squid then finding song and downloading is counter-productive.

Can someone recommend of a way of automating this? or any faster method?

Hello everyone!

Soon I will enter medecine school and thought it would be useful to have some storage capacity for a lot of things related to my future work. I will use this daily to store files, photos, screenshots and misc items that will be used into health softwares.

I think about taking a minimum of 4Tb of space. Since I will be using this as a long-term solution, should I take a HDD or a SSD ?

I have found hardly anything adequate — Kindle and the Linux-based Kobo don't allow freely installing ~~Android~~ applications (no Koreader, Syncthing, F-Droid...) and obviously are running a non-free OS. The latter doesn't natively support the EPUB format. The Chinese manufacturer Onyx builds devices which can be considered as more open, but their heavily customized Android system reportedly sees no maintenance. Tolino is moving away from Android and Pocketbook does not support installing applications from sources other than their own software channels.

Additionally the e-reader devices have significantly lower hardware specs than I've ever dealth with (for comparison, my ~300€ NUC has 16 GB of 2400 MHz RAM), possibly making them non-viable for any web browsing — I frequently download books from Project Gutenberg along with Standard Ebooks and read various articles online.

LineageOS may not support any device with an e-ink display. Standalone e-ink monitors appear to exist in limited numbers, and would not offer true portability.

I consider the light-emitting display types as an inoptimal fit for long-term reading -- an e-ink screen is a must for now.

1. Note that while exploits may exist, I prefer not using a proprietary operating system. As an example I have found "modding" game consoles miserable due to the lack of and/or poor documentation.
2. I haven't owned any devices from the said companies and the information above may be outdated, or even incorrect.
3. While the Open Book project received considerably attention, the resolution of the display is clearly very low. If any company is building comparable but higher-end e-ink devices, please let us know in the comments.
4. I've scraped e-books from various places and my EPUB folder alone is measured in tens of GBs, meaning that hardly any e-reader device offers a satisfactory amount of internal storage (but some do have SD card slots).

Since I have a couple of old analog HI8 cameras (Sony TRV68 and Sony TR66) I volunteered to digitize our old home movies, but none of my computers have analog AV ports so my brother bought me these things:

He's unwilling to buy a Digital 8 cam that can also play analog tapes, and I can't afford one myself. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to make these products work with any of my computers/software. When I was digitizing our old MiniDV tapes, I just used an old copy of iMovie on my 2004 Mac G4 because that camera had a firewire cable and it was able to see/capture from it extremely easily.

With this setup, neither iMovie nor Final Cut 7 can see the input. I have a 2012 MacBook Pro running Premiere CS6 but that's useless for this too. Also, because the USB plug is too wide to plug in both it and a hard drive dock at the same time side-by-side, the only computer I can even plug it into is my 2015 MacBook Air, which is running Monterey OS.

Some commenters on previous threads here have said to use OBS while others say not to (and I can't find good step-by-step instructions anyway). Some say a Blackmagic app that doesn't exist anymore, and some suggest various Windows software that doesn't run on Mac.

So, I'm stuck. What software should I use given the hardware I have available?

I just bought a LaCie 2big RAID for £40 from CEX in n the UK. It’s the 4TB version (2x2TB Ironwolf Pros).

It was a spur of the moment purchase and I figured it was worth it for the HDDs alone.

It’s gonna be my first storage project as I’ve only ever used external HDDs as DAS for my Beelink s12 Pro Plex server.

Hello All,

Long story short, I need to sync two drives across the same network (LAN) on two different PCs. Given the large amount of data transfer (5TB+), I'm planning to start by cloning the drives using a cloning tool. Then, I'll place them in different PCs and set up a sync process. This way, any changes on drive 1 will be updated on drive 2. Ideally, I need an application that can run on Windows to first match the two drives and then keep them synced. This would ensure an exact match of data on both sides, even if the second drive updates more slowly due to network sync.

Now that you know my objective what do you recommend for a network sync software that can make this happen?

For people who need background story so here is the summery of the issue.

I have a small form factor PC that I use to run Plex. As I get more into automation, my data has grown significantly, and running all these software applications like Sonarr alongside Plex has overwhelmed my PC. It can't handle the pressure of managing Plex and other software simultaneously.

Since I have a second small PC, a NUC, and I'm able to add a 10TB drive to it, I was wondering if I could run Plex from the NUC and dedicate my original PC solely to automations.

The PC that has Sonarr will do automations and NUC will be plex server and if data on both pc match my library will be fine and i wont have to deal with slow or other issue. currently my pc does everything but i find my self i have to keep rebooting it few times a day because it is to much processing

Please do not ask why, the reason is simple less noise and heat plus $$$$ which i do not have so i am making the best with what i got.

If you have an idea or suggestions i am open to hear it and open to make changes if possible

Hi, I have 6 10 tb drives I've got on raid5. My current data takes up about 12, so I've got 25 tb or so free. I love collecting, organizing and sorting stuff, and love having things people are looking for. I'm really interested in old radio, audio, etc. I'm totally blind so if I rip my own DVDs I just rip them into audio. I'm interested in archiving old text/audio and would love any tips and pointers people can provide. I've started digging more into the internet archive, but it's a mess to navigate and super hard to find anything I'm really looking for (was recently trying to find iron chef and only found one season, for example). I'm not looking to throw away the data and won't download stuff I probably won't ever listen to, (although I doubt I'd ever listen to all 20 tb of stuff), but it's really fun having collections of things to browse through or stream while I work.

TL;DR - Does slot size matter when it comes to performance of PCIe to NVME adapters?

Looking to buy a few PCIe to NVME cards as my SATA ports are full and I'd like to add more SSD type storage.

I have had a good experience with a Ugreen X16 slot adapter and a Teamgroup MP44 1TB NVME drive in another PC. That was my first experience with NVME in a PC.

But on this other SFF (small form factor) computer, I only have one X16 slot and I may want to reserve that for a video card.

I would have bought the Ugreen card again but the BF sale price is over and it's back to its normal price.

I do see other options for X1, X4, and X8 cards from other manufacturers.

Is the performance the same with cards with the smaller slots?

I know that theoretically the X16 card would be the fastest but I wonder if the smaller slots would also be able to handle the throughput of the NVME drive (The MP44 is advertised as 7400/6500 MB/s).

I note that the Ugreen has cutouts in its card to allow use in X4 and X8 slots whereas some other brands are only X16.

I am planning to build a home server with 36 drives. I am planning to use Broadcom 6400-16i HBA. When I look for SFF-8643 to SATA cables, I see that it can connect to 4 SATA drives. Which means I can connect to 4x4=16 drives. What am I missing? Do I need to use an expander card? Does anyone have any recommendations?

So I bought a seagate exos recertified HDD. I put a bunch of ISO files on it and a couple days later the drive showed as unallocated. I ended up getting Disk Drill to recover all my ISO files but now they won't play. Is there anything I can do to fix them?

I found one that's 4 years old and unsurprisingly, all the products (specific SKUs) have been discontinued

I tried searching with a 1 year filter, but can't find one. I see a lot of people asking if specific drives are SMR or P/CMR though, so I'm guessing there's no comprehensive list.

I'm currently shopping around for an 8TB, but I will go for 12TB if that's the only way to get PMR, because it sorta feels like multiples of 6 are PMR and multiples of 4 but not 6 are SMR for some reason. Based on random responses in other posts, so not like I have a big sample size.

So yeah... how do you all find out? I would rather either find a full list, or get a way to confirm individual drives myself, instead of having to ask for each one, which will probably be annoying.

I'm looking to get an external desktop drive, probably from Seagate or WD, but I'm open to other brands. The WD Black D10 has some impressive speeds, but I'm guessing there are drawbacks to that. The cheapest available locally (slightly more expensive than shipping in from America) is the Seagate Expansion series, but it's only available in 8TB here. otherwise price shoots up for some reason.

I'll appreciate any advice y'all have to offer

Are there any tests I should be running after installing a new SSD before just transferring all my files to it?

Would you recommend a portable SSD as backup? I'm not in a position to be making off site backups (I move all the time), and cloud seems expensive(?) when it's like $5 a month and my intel card has lasted years. Maybe I just need to suck it up and pay cloud, but I hate monthly subscriptions.

I shucked them and put all 3 of them into this DAS: https://a.co/d/abISr5a and powered them on. 2 of them were recognized by my PC, no issues. The third one, however, was unrecognized by my PC. I tried the "good" drives in every bay in the DAS and there were no issues, as well as trying the "bad" drive in every bay and it was not recognized in any of them.

I read online about the 3.3V pin issue, so thought to myself huzzah - that must be it. An easy fix, woohoo. I purchased this tape: https://a.co/d/2lMxwsA and covered the first 3 pins (images here). Yet when I attempt to power on the drive, it is still not recognized.

As an additional step, I attempted using a USB-to-SATA adapter: https://a.co/d/c4SGLQY (not really sure what I was trying to prove here) and it was still not recognized.

Does anyone have any additional diagnostic tips or guidance? Is this drive hosed? My next thought was to completely remove the third pin from the drive with a knife but I'd rather solve this by other means if possible.

Currently running a prototype Docker stack (arr apps, qbittorrent, jellyfin, etc) on a MacBook. Planning to move to a Linux-based Beelink that'll run 24/7 from my home office.

Storage requirements:

• No complex backup strategy required
• Budget around $100s not $1000s

Any recommendations for drive types or mounting strategies? Any specific drive recommendations? Potential Docker/Jellyfin mounting or integration challenges to be aware of?

I got a good deal on an LTO-6 tape drive and am experimenting with using it for backing up files. I'm using Ubuntu and had no trouble getting the hardware recognized, so that's nice. Unfortunately I'm running into problems with writing and verifying files. Here's the command I'm using, where [DIRNAME] is the directory containing the files I'm trying to back up:

tar -cvf /dev/st0 [DIRNAME]

Per the output all the files in [DIRNAME] are written. My understanding is that /dev/st0 indicates a rewinding device and rewinds to the beginning of the tape after the command is complete, so I shouldn't need to rewind to verify the data written. So I use

tar -tvf /dev/st0

after which the tape drive goes through its usual spinny whirry business. But the result is:

tar: /dev/st0: Cannot read: Input/output error

tar: At beginning of tape, quitting now

tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

I have also tried writing with /dev/nst0 and manually rewinding via mt before attempting to verify and the same error occurs. I'm guessing one of the following is happening:

1. I'm not using the commands correctly (quite likely, I'm completely new to this)
2. The tape is bad (possible, but it's brand new)
3. The drive is a lemon

If the problem is #1, I would appreciate any guidance on what I should be doing. If it's #3, I do have the option of returning it, but I need to confirm as much as reasonably possible that the problem is in fact the drive. I have another tape on the way to rule out 2, but is there anything else I can do to confirm whether the fault is with the drive itself? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I've been running an external bay of SATA drives via a SFF8088 cable and a LSI SAS 9207-8e controller for years. I started with 4TB drives in 2018. Over the years, I've been swapping drives out for larger and larger ones.

I just ordered and received a 20TB drive and put it into the empty bay. It didn't come up. It turns out that I hit the 18TB limit on the LSI SAS 9207-8e controller.

Which controller is similar to the basic LSI SAS 9207-8e I controller I have, but supports 20TB drives? Do the newer Broadcom 9400-8E controllers support > 18TB drives?

What do you use and what would you recommend?
