I know that back in the past, a quick format in Windows was not a good test for media. For a long time, there has been a "long" format (i.e. not a "quick" format) but I've never used it (i.e. didn't trust it).

Is it sufficient to test media like a USB stick? How about a hard drive or SSD?

My current need is to test some USB sticks on which I will store Linux ISOs. Yes, ACTUAL Linux ISOs.

To be specific, I will create a Ventoy Boot USB stick and put on various distros that I'd like to try. I'd be best if I could count on the ISO to be exact and contain no bad bits. So I want to test the USB stick.

By the way, I've found that via Task Manager, I can see the current data transfer rate for a particular hard drive. So in the case of my USB stick, I'm getting 20MB/sec write transfer rate. Is this good for a USB 3.0 stick on a USB 3.0 port? It's a cheap off-shore 32GB stick that claims to be a name brand. I'm dubious about it but I just need some reliable storage, not max performance.

Hi, I hope someone will be best to advise me what to do with my predicament, I'm at a bit of a loss and don't know where to look.

I currently have 7 drives connected to my windows machine. 6 internal one external

4 x HDD (1 external) 3 x SSD

I'm going to be getting a Mac mini (it's the cheapest and best solution for me to upgrade my current set-up as all I do is edit vlogs and that will work perfectly). However I'll need to be able to access all 3 years worth of footage from my drives. They're already exfat so Mac compatible, but I will only have 5 usb-c (3 thunderbolt) ports available to me and I'll need one of them for my monitor.

What would be your best advice or is there a unit I can get that would allow me to access them all easily?

Personal note: I really enjoy getting deep into the nerdy specs of this stuff but right now I'm currently on meds for depression and getting really overwhelmed looking at it all so could just do with some guidance.

Simple hypothetical question..... Does anyone know how long an SD card can realistically sit dormant for a prolonged period of time before it croaks it or starts to degrade.

Example: I take photos on my DSLR of a gig, label the SD card after said gig, dump photos from the camera to my PC, upload and save to Adobe, PC, and external backup, then store away the SD card like storing a master tape recording, stored in a box on a shelf in a temperature controlled environment for however many years till I may need to restore one or two files.

Is there any downside to this other than the obvious cost of drives?

though seeing how cheep flash storage has become and my local tech shop is selling quality cards for a very fair price.

I got about 1TB of video and pictures from whenever I backup my PC and I was wondering if any software can take everything and place it in one collection of folders neatly? Main concerns are iPhone photos (5 different photos all called IMG_1234) and Shadowplay folders, but I can just do that manually. I was thinking adobe lightroom but never had experience with it. I've got hundreds of GBs of downloaded stuff on my laptop—movies, videos, documents, images, RAR files, EXEs, you name it.

Being lazy about organizing, I only bother sorting them into folders every two years.

When I do, I make separate folders like "Softwares" for software, "Documents" for various kinds of docs, and so on, but it takes forever and is a huge effort.

Then, the files and folders just sit there for 3–4 years until I eventually delete everything to free up space.

After that, I end up re-downloading whatever I need, and the cycle repeats.

This has been my routine for over 20 years.

Now, I’m desperate to find a faster, easier way to organize all my downloads efficiently.

Any ideas?

I have decided to try two softwares, 'Easy File Organizer' and 'File Juggler,' first.

If I don't like them, both u/Maktesh and u/NZSheeps suggestions seem to fit the bill.

On a proxmox server I want to get a few USB 10g enclosures for enterprise sata disks to passthrough to a Truenas VM for a mirrored ZFS share and hopefully blacklist the drivers for security. Is this possible? I want to be clear I do not want regular usb 3.0 that would be much more unstable, from what I understand usb 10g is different and more stable making this a better use case.

Hi.

I have an Unraid server using the Design Define R5 case and I have used all 8 HDD bays and need to add more disk drives. My problem is, it seems to be almost impossible to get these drive cages these days.

Does anyone have any ideas on alternatives that would work or where I can get some of the original drive cages (I'm in the UK if that helps)

The annual price for personal GoodSync is $20 instead of $30 for one year. Buying multiple years is an option. My question is whether GS does this every year?

On paper, it looks like GS will do what I need--run from Synology, two way sync/backup of Google Photos, two-way backup of my NAS files to OneDrive, backup from iOS, Android, etc. I figured I have 30 days to get a refund it it does not work. I know there is SyncBackPro, but it does not seem to support as many platforms?

Everything was gathered and I wanted to add a new drive to my pool. In disk manager I somehow managed to misclick and format my parity config in windows 10. Hi there, I ran out of space on my iphone because I have too many photos. I DO NOT want to back these up on icloud. I'd like to back them up on a flash drive ideally (or a macbook if necessary - keep reading). And somehow keep all the useful iOS metadata, like date, search tags, people tags, automatic foldering like screenshot, selfie, etc.

I started by hooking my iphone up to macbook with a usb c cable and "importing" some photos to the computer. But then when I go to delete the photos from my phone, it is warning it will delete the photo "on all devices" - does this mean I will lose the backup I just made to my computer as well?

I'm pretty computer savvy but I am NOT iphone/ icloud savvy, as I am a recent Apple convert. Please help- what are my best options here and can you help me with the process? Thank you!

1/ Pre-built products: which one would you choose and why? Synology 923+ vs QNAP TS-464

2/ I’ll pick up Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives but need to decide the starting configuration:

2x 14TB drives in RAID 1 (mirroring) 2x 8TB drives in RAID 1 4x 4TB drives in RAID 5

14TB direct from seagate are 47% off right now so, is the lowest cost per TB. But I worry about future growth (adding another 14TB at full price would be expensive). And rebuild times could be very long if one of the 14TB drives fails.

I'm helping spearhead a digitization effort for my college radio station. We're moving locations (as our current building is being demolished) and sadly the CDs can't come with, leading us to move toward digital. Currently trying to get some outside eyes on our workflow/purpose document to sanity check things or get recommendations on how we can make it more robust. I'm on Linux Mint, with DigiKam 8.2.0. I'm running things through a test folder right now where I have duplicated some files to get the hang of it.

I've imported the folder, Updated Fingerprints, and did Find Duplicates.

I find duplicate pictures as expected, but my only option is to "Move to Trash", but that seems to only move it to the DigiKam trash. Even if I empty DigiKam trash after, nothing changes with the actual files in my directory system/hard drive.

How can I delete the ACTUAL duplicate files? I'm open to other software too. In Windows I used "Duplicate Files Fixer" (paid version) which worked great.

Thought this be the best place to ask about this: My family has about 400GB of data with important photos, videos, and documents from the past 30ish years or so that has been constantly transferred from computer to computer. I couldn't begin to tell you what is in this set of downloads and documents, but it has slowed down just about every device we've put it on.

That being said, this year I've elected to handle things differently - instead of transferring the data to our newest desktop, we're gonna store it on 2 physical drives. The first is gonna be a simple 512gb USB stick, this will remain plugged into the new computer (for the once in a blue moon we need to access the files). The other will be an external SSD, which we will back everything up on, and save in a fireproof lockbox with other important documents until the end of time itself.

Okay so here's my question - for the SSD, what is going to be our best option for keeping the data safe and uncorrupted? I've personally used Transcend as my go-to for storage devices ever since reading on a dashcam forum that they're one of the most reliable sd card manufacturers, and they have served me well. However, for this SSD, I want to make sure I get it absolutely right, I could not care less about read and write speeds, this thing will almost never be used; its one job is to sit in a box forever and be ready to extract data from years down the road when the time comes. What do I get? Budget $100.

I bought a 5TB WD My Passport about 2 years ago and finally got around to unboxing it today to backup some family photos and videos along with some work related data. I would like to password protect it, however when I click the gear icon in the WD app, it only gives me the option to "edit password", which brings a page with the options of "remove password", "change password", or "enable auto unlock". The thing is all these options are asking for the current password, which does not exist, this was a factory sealed box that I've never even opened before. I figured there would be a "set password" option for a first time password, but nope. Any ideas? I have searched the internet and youtube tutorials with no luck.

I have a Highpoint RocketRaid 20xx series raid controller and 6 4tb drives and 3 8tb drives attached to it. I am using it for my games library mostly , and for data storage. Everything is backed up in a 3-2-1 setup , so not worried about redundancy. I formatted it in Raid 0. My question is , how should the array be set? I need 4k clusters in order to install Xbox games to that array. But the underlying drive structure should be set to what? 4k,8k or what , in order for the best efficiency from the array? And how should the array be set? Use the 4tb drives in one array and the 8tb drives in another? Or all one one?
