I'm using Macrium 8 on Win 10 and since last month I started to have serious speed issues with Disk Imaging

So, I have daily scheduled differential backups of my 3 SSD drives(about 100GB) on a 2TB WD Blue HDD

I checked the log history and until 2 Dec 2024 it took on average 10-15 minutes for this backup to be done.

Something happened on 3 Dec, and since then, the same backup has taken about 7-8 hours at an average speed of 20MB.

I used CrystalDiskMark to check all drives for speed issues but everything seems to be fine.

I went to Event Viewer and noticed that on 2 December there was a Windows Update.

Also in the same day I installed Everything app from voidTools. It's a well known application which allows you to search for files and folder instant.

I remember that during or after installing Everything all my drives frozen as far as I remember I think I had to reboot the PC.

Something happened at that time. So not sure it has to do with the Windows update or that app but I'm not sure how this speed issue.

Any tips?

Thanks

Hey everyone,

I feel this is the right subreddit to ask since discussion around czkawka comes up sometimes. If not, mods feel free to remove it.

What I want to do is if multiple files that are reported as potential duplicates, are not duplicates of each other, I want to say "ignore these and don't list these two files together as duplicates again". Is that possible?

I feel like I can't figure out if I'm just not seeing it, understanding it, or the functionality doesn't exist. I've tried Google with different keywords, looked through the repo, ChatGPT with no results.

I know this subreddit isn't strictly czkawka but I wanted to try here first to see if that functionality exists before going to the repo and or creating a feature request.

Thanks

I need to find a way to archive the old wowdetox.com. This is a site for quitting World of Warcraft with thousands of real world accounts of what damage it did to people's lives. What's the easiest way to get all of what IA has?

I'm at a crossroads with my storage. I've been sitting at 80ish percent on my RS1221+ for some time now. All bays are full with 6x 14TB and 2x 18TB drives. I'd love to stick with Synology because it's compact, doesn't require much to get it running, and there are plenty of how-to's for the things I need to tinker with. My IT knowledge is mid-to-novice. I do fine when there are well-done tutorials, but anything beyond that can get tough for me. On the other hand, Synology is getting expensive and DIY (Unraid?) is seeming more appealing.

My use case is mostly Plex, Arr's, Scrypted, AdGuard, TimeMachine backups for my Mac, and general storage.

I bought 2x 20TB drives over the holidays that I'm approaching the return deadline for.

I'm looking to y'all for advice. I can buy an RX418 expansion unit but that seems janky and inefficient. I can buy one of the 1U Synology NAS's like the RS422+. But that just seems unnecessarily expensive and I'd love to avoid having two NAS's. I can just go ahead and swap two of those 14TB drives out with the 20TB drives and buy myself a year or so to kick this can down the road....

Or I can build my own server and take on Unraid or something similar.

What would you all recommend? Is Unraid user-friendly enough? I've built PC's before and can set up software when there are how-to's online. Will I have trouble setting it up or finding the info I need for the services I use? Is it possible to build a short-depth compact 2U or 3U 8+ bay server for Unraid?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Hi! So, I hardly ever use my PC for casual, only work related stuff, which is why almost all of the files I'd like to retain/keep with me are only to be extracted with my phone. Does anyone know some good apps I can use, preferably to download whole image galleries / videos / stories from an entire page/site (in original good resolution)?

Pls no Offline Browser. Thank you in advance 🙏

I currently have a Synology DS220+ that I bought in a pinch when my DS418play started saying I had drive errors (they were fine) then it stopped working.

I have 5 drives total, all the same size. There are 2 Drives in the DS220 and 3 being rotated through on a monthly backup cycle with a simple HDD dock and a calendar reminder to go get the next drive in sequence and swap it out.

Current Usecase in criticality from (most to least)

  1. Photos (family photos etc)
  2. Documents & Books
  3. Movies
  4. Music

Options I am thinking of

  1. Continue to use my HDD dock with the DS220+ and monthly backup routine (Cheap but janky).
  2. Buy a DAS enclosure (like an Orico 4/5 bay), plug it into the back of the DS220+ and use Hyper Backup to schedule backups to each of the remaining drives in sequence (Not so cheap but not so janky) or
  3. Build a DIY NAS (Jonsbo N3/TrueNas) using all the drives + 95% of the parts from my aging Mitx system (i7-8700k/16gb ram/SSDs etc) when I replace it with a m4 mac mini.

I don't particularly want to buy a bigger Synology Chassis either (Though DSM is nice).

I realise I may have answered my own question but other points of view if there are any would be appreciated.

I got an X22 20TB SATA drive and it doesn't seem to work. It makes a steady click/beep type of sound and if the drive is active when I restart my computer the PC gets stuck at boot. Neither Windows nor Linux detects it. I'm using it in a Sabrent DS-SC5B with all other bays full. This is the only drive having problems. I even turned all the other drives off and ran just that drive by itself with no change. I have yet to try it from inside my PC via SATA connection straight to my motherboard which is really the only thing I can think to try now. I messaged the seller to see what their response is. My first thought is that maybe an X22 drive somehow just draws a little too much power for the DS-SC5B to handle but I've had an X20, two X18's, X16 and an He10 all running in it at the same time for over a year now and never had any problems so the next logical step is that it's just dead which I really hope isn't the case. Any suggestions on what to try would be highly appreciated.

Hello I'm trying to backup some web articles as PDF files.

unfortunately it seems most CLI tools, and browsers print functions, assumes I want to print them on a paper and thus removes all the formating and forces the layout onto several A4 papers.

I know there's the "background graphics" and different size templates you can pick from in chromium browsers but it still ruins the layout.

So far the best option I've found was operas snapshot feature unfortunately it compresses the images if the sites to wide or long.

I know there's also stuff like httrack but I'd really like a PDF so I can read them on my mobile devices.

Does anyone know of any good software for that?

So far I've tried:

  • All browsers (with operas snapshot being the best)
  • pandoc CLI
  • httrack
  • pdflatex

I ordered an 8-bay NAS and only have two 8 TB drives to go into it right now, so I started looking around for deals. This BestBuy sale seemed decent, but I'm curious if there's a reason I shouldn't get a couple of these to shuck: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/seagate-expansion-14tb-external-usb-3-0-desktop-hard-drive-with-rescue-data-recovery-services-black/6463050.p?skuId=6463050 All of the other new drives I can find are significantly more $/TB.

My dad burnt a bunch of our camcorder tapes onto Memorex DVD+R discs years ago. They are able to play on a standard, stand-alone DVD player that we have at home.

I recently purchased a DVD player that can connect to my MacBook and Windows PC (LG Ultra Slim Portable DVD Player), and for some reason none of the discs are being read. I know there is something on them, because I’ve used these at my parents house before and I was able to watch it. But for some reason, it keeps getting recognized as a blank DVD on Mac, or E:\ the directory is invalid when I connect it to my PC.

How do I get the data from the DVD onto a laptop so I can digitize it onto a cloud drive? Am I missing something? Do I need to get a VHS and use the original tapes and somehow digitize it from there?

These are a bunch of videos from my childhood, with a lot of my family members in it who have recently passed in the last 4 years. I want to compile these videos and give them to my cousins, but I am running into obstacles.

Currently using a copy of my parents wedding video as test since my dad put it on 2 different discs. Tried it on some others. Was going to use the wedding video first because my mom wanted me to get the file and take the corny wedding music out (Everlasting Love with Lionel Richie) LOL

I haven’t been keeping up with the news lately, and didn’t realize the amazon appstore was going away. I’ve found a few decent games, but I’m not too familiar with what it has to offer, and I’ll go nuts if I find out later about missing some amazing games, apps, etc. Since I have access now, I’d really appreciate if any of you guys could point out some favorites of yours?

I basically only care about 3-4 things in this world

  • video games (action, rogue lite/like, isometric racing/or action iso)
  • music (80’s-00’s punk rock mostly)
  • and of course cats, and vajayjay but I don’t really wanna use up any precious GBs on either, because there’s no substitute for the real thing… yes, for both! So in place of these, any fun or interesting apps meant for art/creativity - like logo/T-shirt designing or something? Thanks so much in advance, I seriously appreciate any help you can give. Now let’s hope and pray for a future where these greedy bastids stop trying to tack a monthly service fee onto everything imaginable, and discontinuing the former service every year!

Hi, im looking at upgrading my server from 6x4TB WD Red drives and I was originally looking at upgrading to 6x 12TB WD Ultrastar HC520 Used SAS drives. I have a dell rackmount server and sound isnt an issue, but I was wondering if taxes in $167.80 CAD/drive was worth it or if I should be looking at other drives instead.

Im open to any suggestions or comments on what you would do in my position.

Hello everyone,

I recently experienced significant data loss due to hard drive failures, a virus, and an accidentally deleted partition across multiple HDDs. Using tools like Recuva and UFS Explorer, I managed to recover a substantial amount of data. However, the recovered files are now extremely unorganized, encompassing various file types with inconsistent naming, repairs, alignments, compressions, and more.

For example, I have photos in multiple versions:

  • Thumbnails and full-size images
  • With and without EXIF data
  • Same photo in black and white, and in color
  • Different orientations and alignments

My goal is to efficiently organize and deduplicate this data. I'm looking for the fastest and most effective methods or tools to help structure these complex datasets and remove duplicates. Specifically, I'm interested in:

  • Recommended software for organizing large, mixed data sets
  • Best practices for handling multiple versions of the same files (e.g., photos with different metadata or formats)
  • Scripts or automation tools that can streamline the deduplication and organization process

Has anyone tackled a similar situation? Any strategies, tool recommendations, or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Not sure what flair it falls under (could use the editable flair and put 3D printed) so Free Post Friday! for this one even though it’s 5 minutes past Friday but timezones make it still Friday in some countries.

I just decided to announce that I am making some faceplates that you can 3D print if you have a server tape drive without the bezel or if yours broke in any way, decided to announce this early as a separate post instead of a data storage mediums post even though the mediums were related (LTO-4 tape and cleaning cartridge, probably next week).

I decided to make my own as IBM support said I needed to be a company to get any new bezels (looks like I just got a string of bad people because someone else was able to get one for free (LTO-7 for the curious) even though they weren’t a company) and also because my dad just got a new 3D printer for Christmas.

I started with some measurements of the original bezel that I got with my drive from work experience and compiled a sheet of paper with all of the measurements (ended up remeasuring some parts when I put it into Tinkercad) and some drawings of the bezel to help me place the measurements on a location which helped me make the replica.

(Will add image of drawings tomorrow here)

I then started printing prototypes of the bezels (5 fully printed prototypes and one that was obviously too big and stopped) and each one had its issues which I fixed in each revision.

Prototype 0: this is the prototype (if you can call it that) which was stopped early because I compared the original and saw it was 1cm bigger for some reason, the printer only got to print the layer 1 walls and that’s it before I stopped it.

Prototype 1: this is my first fully printed prototype, it didn’t fit the tape drive at all despite being shortened by 1cm but I could see the hole for the display was off by a few millimeters.

Prototype 2: the second one had some adjustments, the first was screen hole which I did an oopsie and moved the hole in the wrong direction which made it worse, the second adjustment was shortening the bezel again by a millimeter, the final adjustment was thickening the larger clips by 0.5mm because the first prototype’s button side clip broke (square holed one for the people following at home).

Prototype 3: I moved the hole in the right direction this time which made the screen fit now, I also moved the side clips (not the big ones with the screws, the ones that snap into the holes in the metal case) back by 1mm as they were causing some issues with it going in, I also reverted the big clip with the round hole (opposite to the button side) back to its original thickness of 0.75mm and added a small wedge on the outside to reinforce it as it too was causing issues with the fit.

Prototype 4: getting closer, I can put the bezel on without forcing anything now but still had a bend because it was still slightly too long, I made the pit on the back deeper and moved the button mechanism down to try and make the button not click the actual button inside already, I also added an extra part on the button to make it reach the actual button as it wasn’t reaching but that failed horribly.

Prototype 5: shortened the bezel again by 0.5mm which worked as it fits now, deleted the extra part on the button but somehow made another oopsie and the button couldn’t move as I somehow made the gap too small during the process, added a cross to the button pushing part which I made too tall (whole millimeter instead of 0.5mm) which caused the corner with the button to stay up (tried sanding the cross but not much effect).

Prototype 6: this one hasn’t been made but my plan is to remove the cross on the button altogether, make the button “backboard” thinner in the hopes of it being enough and make the gap bigger so the button can move again and see where it will get us, hopefully onto designing the door and it’s hinge.

I also intend on putting a door on the bezel but my intentions are to make the bezel fully 3D printable without any extra external parts or at least make the required external parts common enough (small framing nail for hinge pin, most people have some laying around) which means the original design of the door might not be possible to implement as it used a push spring so I might (will) have to make the door manual instead of self closing, I’m thinking of using a similar design to a server hard drive enclosure handle but without the complex clip where you open it to the left and put the tape in and there will be a pin to keep the door shut when not in use but I’m still thinking about door designs so not yet finalized.

One more thing before I sign off, when I do put the .STL (50p commission for my hard work but more than worth it as finicky IBM support and £100 eBay bezels are next which aren’t worth suffering through or paying up for) and printed ones up on eBay, I will have to use the generic LTO-X text instead of the LTO Ultrium logo to reduce the risk of getting copyrighted (IP violation) or sued by IBM like the unlicensed CD-ROM drive manufacturers did back in the old days but you can easily modify the .STL yourself to have the LTO Ultrium logo but ones I distribute will have to be plain text LTO-X for that reason but my personal drives will be getting the full logo and any drives I sell will also get a bezel with the full logo as it’s not just the part.

I hope to finish the IBM bezel by the week or the week after and have it online and on eBay and if you have any advice on the hinge issue then I’m glad to accept advice but that’s ask for now, thank you for reading! :)

IBM original on the right with prototypes 1 to 5 right to left

Prototypes 1 to 5 top to bottom

Prototypes 1 to 5 left to right (you can see the broken square holed clip on prototype 1)

Prototype 5 on the LTO 4 tape drive in the computer, it looks like it was made for the drive originally (there will be a door on the final product but I’ll also make a doorless version if you need it doorless), you can just about see the top right corner a little out of place because of the stuck button and the tall button cross, I didn’t power the drive and only put it in the computer for demonstration purposes

My pc only has a 1tb SSD installed, and I currently offload things (videos and projects) I'm not using onto an external 1tb SSD. Not only would I like to expand my storage, I'd like reliable back-up in case a drive fails. Would a DAS two-bay RAID 1 enclosure with a couple HDD work for me? Is a there a better system for me that isn't crazy expensive? I essentially just want to back up my PC and also store all my old projects on the same drive, and have another drive as an exact back-up in case of failure.

I do a lot of personal video editing, so I'm thinking of getting some sort of two-bay raid enclosure and a couple hard drives (preferably 8tb or more) and setting it to RAID 1 so that one 8tb drive acts as a back-up for the other 8tb drive. I'd like to back-up my 1tb PC SSD to this drive and also store all the footage and projects I'm not using.

What RAID two-drive bay would you recommend, and who two drives should I get for a configuration like this? I'm brand new to a system like this (mainly storing old data on crappy store-bought drives), so I'd appreciate any advice.

Hi there! I recently got my first NAS, and after some experimenting and discussions with my fiancée, we decided to place it in a small wooden box in the hallway.

I'm still in the process of transferring all my data to it (really wishing I had a 10G switch 🥲), and I’ve been monitoring the HDD temperatures. During a roughly hour-long transfer of 400GB, the HDDs reached 47°C (117°F), while the SSDs and CPU hit 50°C (122°F). The wooden box has a few handle holes, which I hoped would provide enough ventilation for the hot air to escape. During idle, the temperatures hover around 35°C (95°F), which seems reasonable to me.

Now, here’s my question: 50°C seems a bit high, doesn’t it?

For context, I’m using two 18TB Exos X20 drives, with plans to add a third - and eventually a fourth - which I assume will lead to even higher temperatures. From what I’ve read online, 50°C is generally considered acceptable, but is it really?

What’s the consensus among the enthusiasts here? I’d appreciate any input on this! Thanks!

I just purchased an 8TB model from B&H, and was surprised to plug it in and find it show up in Disk Utility as APFS. Confirmed in the manual this is intentional: https://documents.westerndigital.com/content/dam/doc-library/en_us/assets/public/sandisk-pro/product/external-drives/g-drive/user-manual-sandisk-pro-g-drive.pdf#page6

I find this odd considering it’s a large spinning hard drive, which last I heard APFS does not perform well with. Before I reformat to HFS+, any reason I should leave it as it shipped?

Any good reasons SanDisk preformats spinning hard drives as APFS now?

Been lurking for a while and was excited to start building my first NAS using my old gaming PC. I’ve been keeping an eye out for storage deals (was originally leaning towards the refurb enterprise drives but I live in Canada and wasn’t sure about import fees etc) and I ended up buying 2 of the Seagate Expansion 14TB on sale (Best Buy) which someone confirmed are the 2x14 Mach.2 drives.

To keep it brief, to what degree are these dual actuator drives supported in UnRaid? Ive seen some comments regarding the sata vs SAS versions and how windows/linux sees them differently. And potentially being able to run some script on Linux to help partition them or something. Are the supposed speed benefits even possible in a nas/unraid setup?

Or am I just adding potentially more noise and heat for no reason?

The drives are final sale once I open the packaging (didn’t realize that at first) so I’m trying to determine if I made a mistake buying these or just go ahead with a pre clear/burn in etc.

PC specs for reference:

  • i7 3770k
  • Gigabyte Z77x-UD5H Mobo
  • 32GB DDR3 Ram
  • 2.5Gb Intel Nic (will upgrade to 10Gb pcie card soon)

Am considering buying a LSI SAS/SATA card as well if that makes a difference.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi hoarders!

I’m currently looking for the cheapest way out there for a last-resort backup of my Synology NAS. Because it’s around 10 TB prices for storing such a backup can be quite high looking at it yearly.

The cheapest option I’ve found up till now is HostBrr with a yearly Storage Box including the 40% discount. Getting the 8 TB package (and being more critical about the backup) with 40% off will cost me around $100 per year.

An other option I’ve found is Pulsed Media what results in $176 per year for 8 TB.

Are there other options hoarders here know off that can be used with Hyper Backup (support for rsync or S3).

Thanks!
