I have a hard drive currently sitting at around 30k hours on it with nothing I really consider important enough that losing it will mean the end of the world (I typically have important stuff either printed out or copied across >2 drives), but I'm just so lazy and my internet is so slow that I would rather just copy from one drive to another which will still be slow but much faster than having to re-download stuff from websites and such. How should I go about doing this? Do I just buy a drive and do a full mirror or do I just plug them both in and transfer the files over one by one? The drive isn't showing any signs of failing at all but I just want to do this just in case. I have had this drive for probably 6~7 years now and it had gone through 3 PC refreshes so I kinda just want to keep the spirit of everything through those years preserved.

Oh and just to add on, this drive is also where I download everything to instead of my C: drive which is an SSD, so it has taken the most abuse out of all the drives in my system. It isn't the data that I care, it is the spirit of the drive that I care about. All those duplicate files, text files with 1 character in it, random passwords that were changed years ago, accidental screenshots of my desktop, that is what I truly care about.

Looking at getting the Seagate 16TB, STKP16000400 for $200 in the US. I'm looking at a single drive (so no redundancy) preferably external and shuckable. Mostly for archiving.

Not on top of everything, but believe that Seagate drive should be a CMR and albeit noisy.

Hi! I have extreme hyoerfixation on a certain topic and have lots of videos saved within a collection on TikTok. I have tried my best how to figure out saving this collection.

I tried figuring it out with the app on mobile and online. Any ideas?

I have many videos and just want to save the stuff in this folder!

I checked the internet beforehand, and asked another sub reddit without luck. No one offers anything specific to actually buy. I want to install games onto the storage device, I need more information than "NTFS" I want to know what the people here actually use. Amazon reviews are sketchy, I'd prefer asking here.

Until now I got 4TB M2 at ~250$, it was the same for 2.5' until last year, now they are 300$+, M2 nvme are the same price, thankfully. Problem is I have only 3USB 3.1 left, so that would mean I can get only 12TB.

My reason for getting them was speed, noise and probably life of it. I don't write to much on the SSD, I mostly just read, maybe 1-2TB/day, this would be now, but in total from 3 of them, which is 12TB.

After they get full I don't delete much, they are on 24/24, from what I've read SSD if powered and just read from them, they can last a lot, since nothing can break, mechanically at least.

Would a HDD be ok with that? Sometimes there are reads from multiple places, different files, that's what worries me, last HDD I had was 10-15 years ago and when I did this there were all kinds of sounds, the HDD was a bit old, 4-5 years, I was also running the OS from it, but still. Speed won't be a problem, I never read more than my internet, which is only 1Gbps.

What I can find here are surveillance HDD mostly.

SEAGATE IronWolf Pro, 10TB is ~270$, that would be 2.5 x the SSD's I usually get at the same price almost.

For 20$ more I can get 12TB, WD Purple Pro Surveillance or SEAGATE SkyHawk AI Surveillance.

What do you think I should do? Would one of these HDD be ok for my case? Or is it better to stick with the SSD in the long term? Until now I have only Samsung 870 QVO and Kingston NV2 4TB, which from now I would get only the Kingston.

I have over 2 TB of music and podcasts that I want instant access to, so I am open to suggestions of an mp3 player with SSD cards.

I actually bought one cheap one recently with the brand name Timkoo, but for some reason it doesn't connect to a computer through USB. It charges, but doesn't show up as a device. And for another reason after I try to copy and paste some files directly from my computer onto an SSD and then insert the SSD into the mp3 player, it doesn't show any new files.

I would like to buy a high quality mp3 player that doesn't malfuction and can have multiple SSD cards.

Hello, is there an app that can find same name but different pictures files? im datamining a game and sorting it's files, but sometimes they go back and change pictures while keeping the same name, is there a way to scan the folder to find those that changed? something like Dupeguru but opposite

If I had a 12 TB drive of shows and movies, is there a program or a workaround in one that would allow me to watch several shows at random but always in order?

Can Kodi do that? Or something else?

I’ve gone through so many iterations. Now I feel I am finally starting to near the end. This will be dedicated storage server. Still haven’t full decided between Unraid and TrueNAS, but I am thinking the only difference is that if I go with UNRAID I would be buying 2x2TB drives for mirrored cache drives.

I have a few animated shows I need to convert to MKVs.

I could get and re-download the shows myself as MKVs this time around. However I've noticed that some shows will have a file size of 2mb less than the original MP4s, while some have a difference of 60mb less than the original (individual episodes).

Or should I use something like FFmpeg to remux the files to MKVs? (No Re-encoding)

With something like ffmpeg -i file.mp4 -c copy output.mkv

Edit: Tried re-downloading the file again using the same MP4 container, and even that is giving me a smaller size and bitrate. So would it just be better to convert the original files to MKVs using ffmpeg?

I have some WD Ultrastar DC HC530 drives in my server. I'm probably never going to use all that space so I'm debating if that would work for an NVR drive or am I better getting a drive made for the constant writes?

I know some of it is just marketing, just curious if it's enough to make a difference or not.

It always amuses me when posters complain about their 'huge' 50-100GB video files* and 40-50MB audio files.

*I chuckle when posters refer to their optical discs rips as 'masters' without knowing that the true masters are multi-TB/hour and even 8K+ RED files are compressed.

Having been computing for nearly 4 decades, I've gone from 360K floppies (I skipped cassettes) to double digit TB hard drives and have never considered any file too large when it comes to quality.

And of course backups are a must! I remember when I first started, my ex's brother was shocked that I filled my 20MB hard drive with games and other programs he gave to me on floppies. Hey, it's so much faster and easier to have everything in 1:1 quality in one place!

My first website in 1997 had 5MB! of space and I had to rely on additional free webspace to host my 'big' 100K+ pics and audio samples encoded to RealAudio. And I got compliments on the quality of my scans and audio clips. LOL

But my original magazine and book scans were nearly 5MB each (and would be ever larger today if I rescanned them) and I retain the ripped WAVs from my CDs.

I never re-encode any of videos, audio or images because I know that while my sight and hearing are failing, display and audio reproduction quality will continually improve and what's lost to re-encoding can never be regained.

In my hoard, I'm continually upgrading my collection to whatever the latest, highest quality and usually largest Linux ISOs available, with some series topping 900GB and if there's a larger version available someday, I'll upgrade to that!

I hope someday before I die, I'll find a multi-TB 8K remastered version of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai that I can watch on my 240" home theater I'll build when I win the lottery!

I'm from the UK and I'm trying to find an external player which can play Australian region DVDs.

I've read that all USB DVD players can be used for this purpose, so long as you have the right software (many mention VLC for example)

Is this the case? Thanks

I am beginning to amass an unstable mountain of discrete drives and full SD cards and need to create an affordable archive to clear up some substantial space. BH has 10tb drives for $185 and I'm thinking of getting a 4 drive enclosure using RAID5. This is more for archival than active speed needs (I have fast ssd drives I can keep things on if I need high speed, but I need to clear some space off them).

  1. What is the best affordable enclosure I can get? and

  2. What is the smartest RAID5 software I can get that is either open source and free or affordable and not subscription based? Thank you.

My home server/NAS is finally up and running. I'm trying to move away from the various cloud storage solutions I've been paying for. Where I'm stuck, however, is figuring out the best system for photo organization. Let me explain.

I have loved Google Photos for the facial recognition, location grouping, and memory features - so I am trying out Immich as a replacement. I have loved Google Drive / OneDrive for the ability to easily share files and access them from all my devices wherever I am - so I am trying out NextCloud. Here's the thing, I've got SO MANY photos that I like to access in different ways and I don't really want to bloat my NAS up with duplicates of these photos.

I'll add a bit more context - I have a large folder for engagement photos, a separate large folder for wedding day photos, a large folder for pictures from the 2 years I lived abroad, etc. I want to have easy access to these folders and files on my PC for whatever I may choose to do with them, but I also want Immich to have access to them to give me memories or so I can search by face and what not. I don't want a separate database of the same images for Immich and NextCloud. I suppose maybe this is a usecase for external libraries with Immich? However, I also want all the photos I take on my phone to be backed up somwhere, but not JUST on Immich in case I want to access the files more easily. I suppose I can also have those directly backed up to NextCloud with Immich having external library access?

I'm just curious what the best solution would be without needing to have the same files replicated in multiple locations.

I have us (openmediavaoult) and I have a directory after smb.

  1. how to archive the data?

On the disk that copies the directory with the date and copy?

  1. how to archive data that is growing such as dvd recordings?

I do not want to delete from the NAS because over the network I watch, but I also want to archive so that when I need the space I can quietly delete. Now if I make a directory with a date and then make another with a different date, the data will be duplicated.

  1. how not to get lost on which drive what is on?

Ordinary notepad and dates on which drive (give them some names or numbers, I think) and to that from each drive ls -al > data_copy.txt ?

I'm currently looking for drives to fill out my first homeserver, and I feel like I've reached the point where I'm overthinking everything way too much in the pursuit of finding the best bang for the buck.

Ideally I wanted to go the "manufacturer refurbished/rectified" route to get more capacity for cheaper while hopefully still having some sort of warranty, but I am residing in Spain, so the easy options of ServerPartDeals and GoHardDrive are out of the question.

My budget is currently limited to 200€ which doesn't leave much room if I want two drives to have some sort of backup. Granted nothing critical would go in there for now (just really big Linux ISOs, not quite datahoarder struck yet but I want to keep them around until I can no longer fit in more), so maybe opting for a better single drive deal can work.

That I've looked at:

  • Amazon (with diskprices) new drives quickly go up in €/TB if I want to target two drives. And as for refurbished, I've been hearing more and more CS horror stories, so I don't know if they'd actually help in the case of an issue.
  • Ebay (refurb) professional sellers mostly reside outside the EU, and seem just about as risky as Amazon, though some provide "warranties" that may help.
  • There's some German sites, and even a Spanish one (with seemingly good reviews) I found mentioned here along my search, but again nothing as widely mentioned as the US sites.
  • Finally there's the local 2nd hand site Wallapop for even more offers, though I guess here I'd need to manually scrutinize the drive's health, warranty status, etc

I'm thinking about opting for amazon refurb, but I'm curious about other's experiences when dealing with this in Europe.

Looking into offsite backups, less than 1TB in size.

The B2 comparison table seems to suggest that Google Cloud is very expensive compared to B2. Is that an intentional marketing smoke-and-mirror?

Google One is doing 2TB for 7.99 / month (ignoring initial month of saving), vs B2 being 12 / month when comparing the same storage size.

That makes Google One cheaper.

I assume we shouldn't go with Google One as it's not as featureful? (ignoring any privacy issues, since all my data gets encrypted anyway).

I am currently testing a new server, my first major upgrade into server class hardware (TrueNAS Scale). I have 6x 18TB SAS drives set up and combined into a pool as a single raid-z2 vdev.

The system has 6 more open bays which I plan to use to expand the storage eventually. But I was wondering about the tradeoffs of doing this later, vs. adding the extra 6 drives now and configuring it as a single raidz3 vdev with 12 drives.

I know I would be gaining one drive more usable storage, but that alone isn't enough to sway me.
