I've seen some posts and comments on a handful of subreddits from folks asking how to quickly power down and pull their NAS drives. Followed up with even more comments from other folks saying: "Hey, just grab the whole NAS!" Putting aside that some of us have a rack mounted NAS, answer me this: what about hauling around a piece of computer equipment or a bunch of magic rocks and keeping them safe while traveling through fire zones while sleeping in makeshift shelters makes sense?

Y'all are like a bunch of zebras watching lions eat your striped friends.

If you're planning how to deal with a disaster, you first priority is to the living breathing beings currently in your house. You, your family, your pets, a go bag, some physical mementos if you have time.

I promise you if I had 3-5 extra minutes during an evac bugout, I would head outside and start banging down doors on my street getting people out. I'd help my next door neighbors carry their 101 year old father down the front steps and into the car. I don't care one wit about NAS drives and none of you should either.

At least once a day there's someone on a subreddit commenting about "3-2-1 backup strategy". If don't know about it, look it up now. Part of that strategy includes an offsite backup. Recent events have shown the importance of an extra-regional offsite backups; keep a backup copy far outside your region in case of a firestorm, earthquake, hurricane or flood.

We live in an age when some of our precious possesions are ephemeral and infinitely copiable. Cloud, deep cold storage, swap remote NAS backups with a distant buddy, mail or leave a drive at grandma's house. Do it daily, weekly or monthly or once a year. Do it one time. Be sure to regularly test that your backups are in fact recoverable.

If you're wondering how to save your drives during an emergency, you asked the wrong question. Good for you for asking. But, it's still wrong.

Instead, ask yourself: "How can I start making sure at least one copy of my most precious data survives a regional disaster?"

The best time to start backing up is yesterday. The next best time is today.

I want to upgrade my old fileserver and plan to have 10x 12TB drives. I will be re-using the Fractal Design R4 case.

I have a 12 year old Seasonic currently but I heard best to replace a PSU within 10 years or whenever the warranty goes out in case it goes bad and starts killing drives/devices.

What do you guys recommend now a days? I see the PSU Tier List hasn't been updated in over a year and does not show how many SATA connectors are for each.

Also, if I decide to shuck some 12TB WD I have would I have to do the pin modification if I use a newer PSU or that is only for older PSU's where I have to modify the pin?

Thanks!

hi.

so i have lots of old linux isos in low quality. like old .avi or .mpeg files.

also i have an 65 tv which just works properly with .mkv files.

so what would be the best/fastest option:

  1. should i use software like handbrake and convert all the files to .mkv files. some of them are really poor quality and i dont really know how good the upscaling of my tv works. i should probably check this out with one or two files.
  2. should i just download all that files new in an up to date format?
  3. other suugestions?

ty in advance

Looking for recommendations for stores that sell re-certified/refurbished server disks. I am considering sizes between 4TB-10TB. What is currently the sweet spot size and cost in this range? Any places to stay away from?

Hello kind people,

I've decided to use my old PC as a plex server until i can afford better parts & drives. Jotting down my PC build. I want to undervolt any and all parts that is not required more than what's needed.

CPU - Ryzen 7 1700

Motherboard - Asus prime b350

Ram - corsair vengeance 16gb

GPU - GTX 1050 ti (just to view the screen)

PSU - corsair VS650\

Drives : Toshiba 500GB (OS drive)

WD 1TB X2

is it possible to undervolt this to a decent level? I also want to check how much it's pulling at any given point, how can i do that, for all the parts at once?

Doing a refresh of my RasPi5s.  I think this is the right subreddit for this question. I debated /storage, but this sub seems more engaged for my type of question. Longer term, with the knowledge I hope to acquire in here, making some flash-nas.

By default, Rpi5 puts NVMe drives(PCIE link breakout board, not a HAT) in gen2 mode, you have to go out of your way(software config, nothing hardware) to enable Gen3. So, speed is really not that much of a concern. Out of the box, gigE is the fastest we are going for the time being, but maybe five gigabit adapters once software support is ubiquitous, and power draw isn't too dramatic.  These drives will likely be "bonded" to the raspberry pi for the foreseeable future. re: not taking them out or swapping them. Actually, my whole goal is to never service them! re: TBW

I am open to Gen 4 drives, if the parameters in the title makes sense, etc. I'm aware, just like RAM, that my ideal drive might not be currently made anymore and a Gen4 might be "best". Right now, it just feels SILLY putting a $250 stick of NVMe into a RasPi... but times are changing I suppose.

I know TBW is not the only end-all factor for drive life. But it's the only publishable metric, that I have to go on and judge drives without hours or days of personal testing.

Workload/Context: RPi5 running HomeAssistant(base image is Ubuntu IIRC). Sounds silly, but 100, 1000+ sensors later, add some Containers/logging/etc. Fills up quicker than I was expecting. Ideally, these drives would also do some NNTP in their spare time. Or - It would be OK to pop one out and put it into a laptop, etc.

With all of the above, taken into consideration, what are some drives I should look at? I default back to my post title: Best TBW, price per TB, and thermals are last.

Sorry if I provided too much/little or redundant context. Thanks!

As the title states, I am currently screwed.

I was downloading 30 songs as I do each week and then I continued playing limbus company as I was doing. When I tabbed back I noticed yt-dlp-gui was closed and assumed I accidentally closed it, likely by pressing alt+f4 because I tend to have two games open at once and when I’m done with one, that’s what I’ll do to get back to the other game.

But then I decided to try downloading all 30 at once by putting the playlist’s link into the bar asking for the url and I forget exactly how it looked, but essentially it just didn’t work. So I tried to download the first song on the playlist and for some reason it started to show off all the songs in the list but when it got to the end it just said “ERROR” in the status, size, and speed slots.

I tried to use regular yt-dlp since I had a friend who is more familiar with coding in a call with me watching my screen, but when it said I needed ffmpeg to do what I needed, I went to the ffmpeg page and neither of us could tell what we were looking at nor which thing I should download and how to handle it.

So I would really like to fix yt-dlp-gui so I don’t have to look at ffmpeg again, no offense, and also I hope I can download the whole playlist at once, but also if I do that and enter a custom name in the name slot, is it going to name all songs the same name?

I have dosen of photos i need to share with my mother and brothers etc.

I have beefy server (who doesn't) and i through well maybe it's EASY to setup PhotoPrism, connect it to a domain, use SSL and boom.

----Rant warning----

Well, you can. Allthrough SSL is a BITCH to setup cause its really picky about that browser lock thing. Anyway, got that sorted.

My domain now works, wohoo. When i go to share my album to my horror: The secret key doesn't work? Turn out after bit of a googling via albums you cant share albums with your fucking domain so it password encrypts it first. Wtf??

So with photoprism i'm done, fucking done. Spend 3 days to setup this and this.

----Rant over-----

Flicker pro sucks (or so i have read) Dropbox is little bit better (but expensive) immich has it quirks. Via docker didn't even got it setuped properly. Nextcloud is slow as fuck.

what next? Google photos is a no go because google.

I have 2 drives (4 TB each) in RAID 1 (mirror) config in a Synology NAS. I also have an extra 4 TB drive. I want to use all the three drives ( 2 with data in mirror config and 1 empty) in a RAIDZ1 config in a TrueNAS Scale machine. How can I achieve this without buying any extra drive for backing and transferring the data?

I am seeing on ebay some WD RED Pros with runtime ~30k stating that they were only "once" written and then idled. What is this usecase/how reliable they would be after running for 3a without doing anything (by statement).

Thanks for any judgement on that (y)

I found a program called FileOptimizer and another called PNG Gauntlet. These programs claim to optimize the file losslessly. Is this true? Or is there a slight quality loss? I'm mainly looking at optimizing images. But with my bad eyesight it's extremely hard for me to tell any quality loss with images in general. And I wanna keep my files as lossless while reducing space.

I also heard that WebP is lossless as well. While messing around I noticed that if I 1st run the images through FileOptimizer or PNG Gauntlet. Then convert them to WebP it saves even more space then if I converted the images to WebP. Dose doing that mess with the quality of the image at all? Or would it still be lossless?

Like I mentioned my main goal is to losslessly compress images. But if FileOptimizer is truly lossless. I'd like to use it on my MP3 library too. So any help there would be appreciated as well. And yes I know MP3 is a lossy format. I try keep my audio files as FLAC. However some songs I only have as MP3's.

Any help or info you can guys and girls can give would be HIGHY appreciated. Thanks.

Has anyone been able to archive their Google Maps location history since Google moved to on-device encryption?

Google Takeout used to work, but now it just creates an Encrypted Backups.txt file that says:

You have encrypted Timeline backups stored on Google servers.

This also feels like it doesn't adhere to EU private requirements, but that's probably another discussion.

The info is obviously on the device somewhere. Has anyone been able to extract them? A quick check of an unrooted device couldn't find anything obvious. Thanks.

First off, not 100% sure if this is the right place, if not, could you please direct me to the correct place please? Thank you!

So as people may see from my post history, I’m about to get 2.5gbps up and down broadband and I’m thinking about using an old PC to host a cloud storage type situation for me and a few friends on my old PC.

My old PCs specs are as follows:

  • PSU - EVGA 750 GQ
  • Mobo - Asus Maximus VII Ranger
  • CPU - i7-4790k 4GHz
  • RAM - 16gb DDR3? Maybe 4 (how do I tell?)
  • GPU - GTX 980 Gaming 4G

What I’m wanting to do:

I’m basically wanting to run a self hosted cloud that me and my friends can upload files and backups etc to, much like my own iCloud/Google Drive

But also if possible have a partition? to use as a plex server to stream from wherever I am in the world?

Is all this possible on my hardware? I have a few TBs of SSDs so didn’t mention them as they can be bought etc.

If it is possible, can anyone point me in the right direction of some documentation I can read or some videos I can watch please?

Thanks in advance for your help and advice!

I inherited an old LenovoThinkPad W530 i7-3840QM/K2000M and it has a Panasonic Matshita UJ260 burner from 2012 in it. I’d like to use this machine to back up media such as family photos, GoPro videos, and music, and also back up large data sets. Some items will be unchanging and I’ll want to store those on BD-R, and other items I’ll want to use BD-RE due to occasional updates to the files (e.g., the data sets). I’ve successfully burned a DVD-R and played a Blu-Ray movie so the drive appears to work fine.

I’ve found conflicting information online about the maximum size (layers) Blu-Ray disc I can burn with the UJ260 (it doesn’t have a suffix on the part number like some info I’ve found).

Can anyone confirm the largest capacity BD-R and BD-RE I can use, and are there any recommended media brands that have high success rate for burns (mostly concerned about BD-R here) and longevity?

I was looking through a local shopping app for SSDs for my old laptop which only supports SATA drives and I stumbled on this new model of SATA SSD called S25Pro from Yottamaster. That brand seems reputable from what I've found here on Reddit.

I'm still doubtful if their new SATA SSDs are okay to use long-term. Their 2TB has 800TBW, 1TB has 400. The model is still new so you won't find long-term reviews yet. I'm going to use it as a secondary drive for stuff I've acquired from the high seas. I'm really tempted to buy because their 2TB is only about 112 USD (when converted) while other brands range from 205 to 250 USD. Should I go for it?

I need to get an HBA and I am looking into a 9500-8i, I can get one for around $250 from art of the server that I know is legit. There are also much lower price option(under $100) for what is listed as the same card one ebay and aliexpress, I know these are most likely knockoffs considering the cards should be more expensive.

My question is there a higher risk of data loss in using a counterfeit card vs legit? I am know if I get a knockoff that functions like the real thing... as long as it works I don't really care much about build quality. I am even ok if I have to replace to card someday but I am not ok if a counterfeit causes my data to get corrupted.

Please answer the poll if a counterfeit HBA is ok for data integrity (using zfs)

Hi!

I want to buy a Docking station to start Downloading and torrenting several movies and shows

I have a laptop, that’s why I need this tool, and I have been searching several options , but, from the ones available in my country, I have no clue which brand and also number of bays

Sabrent SSD 4 bays https://amzn.eu/d/cccanhQ —> 4 bays. This is my fav, cause it seems fall resistant, has fan and it’s somewhat pretty, but as a complete idiot in the IT world I cannot understand if it only allows SSD storage or i will be able to put hdd disks also

Orico 5 bays https://amzn.eu/d/2ToF9c4 —> 5 bays but more expensive

Orico 5 bays no Fan https://amzn.eu/d/9HeSByg —> 4 bays No Fan

StarTech https://amzn.eu/d/6mrDnw5 —> 2 bays

Sabrent 2 bays https://amzn.eu/d/aRRw5JR —> 2 bays MUCH CHEAPER??

There is much difference in prize from the StarTech one that is 2 bays to the rest, even if they have more bays

Those of you that have 2, do you miss having 4? Is it equally safe having 2 than 4?

Thanks in advance

So I went through a phase where I convinced myself I am straight but in reality I wanted to be her, I am gay. Anyways , it’s more so about the SONG. It was a video of her in bikini, posing etc but there’s a song that I wanna hear again, but I forgot the name. It gave my Xylo LA love song vibe, and there’s for sure the word sunrise/sunlight, the song was slow-ish and a woman sang it. I’ve noticed most videos were deleted in this playlist, so I wonder if that song is in one of the deleted video?

SOLVED

Hi!

Some time ago I got really mad when I was watching a tv show and they took it out of Netflix before I finished it.

The final decision to start downloading all the movies and TV shows I want to watch or re-watch came when movies started costing money apart from the money I already was paying for the monthly service. What the hell is even that?

Well, after the unnecessary rant here comes the question hehe

I currently have 2tb hard drive disc and it’s completely full. It has my top rated movies in IMDb, the whole Trek Franchise and Stargate SG1

I realized that I need more space, as there are several tv shows and movies I still wanna have in local

(Important info!!) To play them, I have a Plex server in my laptop and I just play it in my tv. I’m the only one that is gonna access it and only from the tv (or maybe if I learn how to configure it, a tablet), but always from my house and my network

I’m doubting between buying two 14tb (or 20) hdd. One for main and one for backup, and use the 2tb one to backup a third copie of my favourite shows and movies.

The alternative is buying a Synology NAS, but I don’t think I will be using the features to justify the price, cause if those 14tb run out, I can buy another one and start labeling them, making an excel file to search which shows are in which HDD

What do you think?

Hi All

I wonder if any of you would be able to help me or provide some guidance?

I’ve got a Dell TL2000 tape library (and a couple of TL4000s in storage) which I have installed with two half-height LTO-6 SAS tape drives.

I’ve installed this into my home lab rack, along with a Dell PowerEdge R430 server which has Windows Server 2025 installed on it. So far so good.

For backup software, I’ve installed Veeam Backup & Replicarion community edition. Within this, I’ve gone to the tape backup section and created a tape server (the same machine). Again, so far, so good.

However… here’s where I’m running into problems.

  1. The tape server doesn’t have either of the tape drives showing up/available to use.

  2. In Device Manager, both tape drives are recognised but have a yellow warning triangle. The driver installed is from IBM via windows update, and appears to be recent. But there appears to be an issue with the driver?

I’ve tried to find a driver for the drives (the library itself doesn’t get recognised in Windows?)… but all I can find is firmware updates for the drives and library. I’ve installed these as they’re compatible so I’m now on A30 as the firmware version from Dells website.

  1. I have got the IBM Spectrum Library software to run these each tape as a logical volume, but again, this won’t install as the “right” driver has to be installed first… but again, no joy in finding anything on the IBM FixCentral website.

Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction, please? Any help would be great fully received!!

Thanks

Matt
